Missouri: “The Show Me State”
Congressman Willard Duncan
Vandiver—a scholar, writer and
lecturer who served as a U.S.
Representative from 1897 to
1905—used the expression during
an 1899 speech in Philadelphia.
Speaking to Philadelphia’s Five
O’Clock Club, he questioned the
accuracy of an earlier speaker’s
remarks, concluding with the
phrase, “I’m from Missouri and
you’ve got to show me. “The
expression soon caught the public’s
fancy, portraying Missourians as
tough-minded demanders of proof.
Some have suggested other
origins for the phrase. About 1897,
one version goes, hundreds of
free railroad passes were issued
to people connected with the
Missouri legislature. The conductor,
when told that passengers on
the train had passes, would insist,
“You’ve got to show me.”
Gate guards were from St. Louis
and soldiers were told that anyone
claiming to have passes to town
would be stopped at the gates, for
the guards were from Missouri and
had to be shown. The “Show Me”
expression also appears in songs
and poems published in the late
1890s.
Another version dates to 1898,
occurring shortly after the start of
the Spanish-American War. About
60,000 soldiers were stationed in
Chickamauga Park in Tennessee.

History of
Columbia
The most significant event in all of Columbia’s history,
having the most lasting impact, occurred in the 1840’s.
This was the acquisition and organization of the
University of Missouri. This institution was not a gift to
Columbia, but came as a result of fund-raising efforts
on the part of citizens of Boone County. They outpledged six other counties for the honor of building
the university. Interest in education goes back to the
original founding of Columbia, where plans for the
town show 10 acres set aside for the site of a state
university
Columbia lies in an area originally called Boone’s Lick
Country, and was explored in the early 1800’s by the
sons of Daniel Boone. Columbia was to develop a
distinctly southern flavor, due to the fact that many
of its early settlers came from below the MasonDixon line. Columbia began as Smithton, named after
the Smithton Land Company and was laid out in
the winter of 1818-19. Due to the shortage of water,
Smithton was abandoned in May 1821 and the city’s
name was changed to Columbia.
From a frontier village to a city that has consistently
been rated in the top twenty desirable cities in
America by Money Magazine, Columbia has much of
which to be proud!

Avenue of the Columns
Located in the downtown area, this avenue displays
both the columns from one of the original UMC
buildings and the pillars from the original courthouse.
Firestone Baars Chapel
Stephens College Campus Eero Saarinen, designer of
the St. Louis Gateway Arch, also designed this gracious
building, which features a unique 4-foyer design
Francis Quadrangle
Entrance of 8th & Elm Site of the Chancellor’s
Residence, the Quadrangle was built in 1869. Its 18
surrounding buildings are on the National Register of
Historic Places.

is central Missouri’s only pre-depression era movie
palace and vaudeville stage.

America’s Hardest
Working Cities
According to a newly-released
survey, the hardest working
employees in the U.S. live in
Columbia, Mo.
Today, PARADE magazine, in
partnership with Total Cereal,
released its list of the “25 Hardest
Working Towns in America.” To
compile the list, PARADE’s editorial
team analyzed the total number
of hours worked, unemployment
rates, commute times, the number
of double income families, and
the likelihood of people giving up
personal time for work. The data
came from Mediamark Research
Inc., Claritas, the Bureau of Labor
Statistics and the Census Bureau.
The list was released in conjunction
with the magazine’s annual “What
People Earn” issue.
“An anemic job market along
with economic uncertainty have
definitely played a key role in why
Americans work harder,” says
Maggie Murphy, editor of PARADE
Magazine. “Businesses have been
asking employees to do more with
less, work longer for less pay, and I
don’t know anyone who hasn’t felt
the volume of work increase to the
point of feeling that no matter how
much you are getting done in the
day, there is still more to do.”
Unemployment is relatively low
in Columbia, Mo., thanks to its
primary businesses; eight colleges
and six hospitals, Murphy says.
“Couple that with the fact that 80%
of households are dual-income,
which is the highest in the country,
and you understand why it’s No. 1.”
Columbia, Mo. topped the overall
list—but Bloomington, Ind. ranked
highest when it came to working
weekends, and employees in
Tuscaloosa, Ala., Norfolk, Va., and
Hartford, Conn. clocked the most
hours during the workweek.
“To be called a hard worker would
seem to us to be one of the nicest
compliments one can bestow at any
time,” Murphy says. “In tough times,
it says you are leaning in, solving a
problem, taking charge. Wouldn’t
you love for your boss to call you a
harder worker these days?”

Police Department
Community Service Aides
CSAs are limited commission officers who perform a variety of
law enforcement support activities, such as parking enforcement,
investigation of non-injury accidents, escorting funeral processions,
rerouting or directing traffic around traffic hazards, transporting
equipment to police officers, and unlocking vehicles in emergency
situations. CSAs cannot make arrests, but do issue summons
for traffic violations at accident scenes, assist stranded motorists
and issue parking tickets for trespass vehicles. They can also
be observed in the municipal court room as a bailiff.
Bicycle Licenses
The City of Columbia requires all bicycles to be licensed and registered
with the city. The license is free of charge. To obtain a license,
bring your bicycle to a city Fire Station between 8am and 8pm, on
any day. The frame will be stamped and stickered with a license
number. Information about the bicycle and how to contact you will
be recorded and forwarded to the Police Department. All bikes are
required to be equipped with reflectors or reflective material on the
crank and front and rear forks. If you change residences within the
city, contact the Police Department to update your information.

The mission of the Columbia Fire Department is FIRE PREVENTION
THROUGH EDUCATION. Through our most valuable resource, our
employees, the Columbia Fire Department provides emergency
medical care, and assistance during fires, explosions, hazardous
material incidents and other catastrophic occurrences. In addition,
the Columbia Fire Department provides fire investigation, fire
inspection and code enforcement services which affect the
lives, property and general well-being of the citizens.
The City of Columbia has 8 Fire Stations spread throughout the
city. Each station is equipped with a Fire Engine. Other equipment
assigned to various stations include: Ladder Trucks, Rescue Squads,
Water Rescue Crafts, Foam Trucks, and an Air and Light Truck
capable of refilling air tanks and providing emergency lighting.
The Special Operations Division is under the direction of an Emergency
Services Division Chief and is divided into two branches: Technical Rescue
Branch and Hazardous Materials Branch. The Technical Rescue Branch
has 22 team members. The Haz-Mat Branch has 17 team members.

reenactments, the 60-acre Nifong Park contains the
1877 Maplewood Home, Maplewood Barn Theatre

nature study on this 60-acre site. The six-acre
swimming lake has a deck, diving platform, water
slides and a large sand beach area. Separate
from the lake is a water playground for small

formation, Devil’s Icebox Cave, hiking trails, shelter

In 1986, the Missouri Kansas Texas Railroad
(nicknamed the Katy) stopped running between
Sedalia and St. Charles Missouri. By 1996, the old
Katy Railway had become the Katy Trail State Park,
one of the longest rails-to-trails conversions in the
U.S. The Katy Trail can be enjoyed on foot, by bicycle
or wheelchair as it meanders across the state and
along the Missouri River. The 8.2- mile MKT spur
that connected downtown Columbia to the Katy
was also converted through the joint efforts of the
City of Columbia and Boone County Government.
The MKT is a popular walking and jogging trail, which
begins as an urban walkway at the downtown trail
head at 4th & Cherry and soon becomes a densely
wooded passageway as it travels toward the Katy Trail.
Capen Park

covers an area of 30 acres, has a 60-foot
cliff that looks over the rest of the park.
The ARC
The Activity and Recreation Center is a 73,000
sq. ft. complex. It features a Kid Zone, Stay & Play
Area for Children, Game Room, Zero Depth Entry/
Water Play Feature, Triple Loop Water Slide, Lazy
River and Vortex, Hydro Therapy Pool, Gymnasiums,
Meeting Rooms and Classroom, Youth Training Room,
Cardio/Strength Training Zones, Indoor Walking/

Columbia’s largest recreation areas, the 520-acre
“Cosmo Park” has 18-hole L.A. Nickell Golf Course,
the six-field Rainbow Softball Center, baseball
fields, soccer fields, horseshoe pits, tennis courts,
volleyball courts, and numerous other activities.

This 75-acre park has a municipal swimming
pool, five tennis courts, two softball fields
and three volleyball courts along with picnic

Stephens Lake Park
Located just minutes from downtown, the park
features free fishing and swimming in the Summer,
walking paths, a playground, and pavilions. The
park also hosts Columbia’s annual Art in the Park
festival amongst the beautiful wildflowers.
Flatbranch Park
The park is located at the original site of Columbia’s
Market Square, which since its establishment in
the 1820’s has been a favorite spot for community
gatherings and a hub for commerce. Since its
development, Flat Branch Park has been the
venue for many downtown festivals and events,
including the Twilight Festival, The Mayor’s Bike,
Walk, and Wheel Week kickoff, the Roots N’
Blues N’ BBQ Festival, Outdoor Cinema Series,
and the Stream Extravaganza to name a few.

Pinnacles Youth Park
Just North of Columbia, the park is open to
the public to hike, fossil hunt, or picnic at the
natural rock formation that juts out of Silver Fork
Creek. There are also many scenic state parks
located near Columbia including: Finger Lakes
State Park, Gans Creek Wild Area, Three Creeks
Conservation Area, and Katy Trail State Park.

Built along the former corridor of the Missouri-KansasTexas Railroad, newly developed Katy Trail begins
in St. Charles and ends in Sedalia. History buffs can

segment of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail.

One of Missouri’s most popular water-based activities
is canoeing down one of the state’s crystal-clear

Missouri has more than 5,000 caves and often is called
“The Cave State.” Out of 114 counties in Missouri,
78 counties have caves for adventurers to explore.
For those who find sliding through small spaces or
rappelling down holes a bit daunting, 22 caves offer
guided tours. Several Missouri caves are famous
in history or legend. For example, the Bridal Cave
which holds the record for the greatest number of
underground weddings. Meramec Cavern is famous as
a hideout for the notorious outlaw Jesse James. Fantasy
World Caverns was first inhabited by Indians, then a
skating rink before it was returned to its natural state.

Helping out the Community
Annual House of
Brokers Chili Cook-Off
Every October since 2007, House
of Brokers Realty, Inc. hosts a chili
cook-off. There are 4 categories
offered for chili entry: traditional,
non-traditional, spicy, and nontraditional spicy. From each
category a winner is chosen. For
the sweet-tooth, desserts are also
entered at the event. Entry fees
are $10 for general admission and
free for chili entry. All proceeds
for the event go to the American
Cancer Society, House of Brokers
raised approximately $3000 with
the event!
Clean-up Columbia
House of Brokers volunteers every
spring for the city-wide trash pick
up event, Clean-up Columbia.
Hundreds of local residents work
together to make our city a more
beautiful place. The city provides
volunteers with trash bags, gloves,
safety vests (where needed)
and help find a trash pick-up
location. Columbia Public Works
pick-up your filled bags. This is a
wonderful event for individuals
and groups of all sizes and people
of all ages and abilities. For more

Central Missouri Food
Bank
House of Brokers consistently
fund raises money for the Central
Missouri Food Bank. Additionally,
our House of Brokers staff and
agents volunteer their time helping
directly at the facility, bagging food
items to be sent out to those in
need. If you would like to volunteer

Adopt-a-Family
Every holiday season in December,
House of Brokers adopts a family
in need. Families are matched
through the Voluntary Action
Center (VAC) in Columbia. If you
are interested in finding out more
ways to help out the community,
