The Gymnasium and Fitness room was first opened in 2002 to increase the range of sport options available for students. The Gym was then refurbished and reopened in 2015 and now houses commercial strength gym equipment. The final touches are being made to the 50th Anniversary celebrations. During this term we have welcomed during Monday assemblies, former students as guest speakers to talk about their time at the school. There has also a slide show about the history of the school, shown in decades, and performances by the CAPA ensemble. This will be the last 50th Anniversary article as all the events will be completed before the next newsletter so we are going to cover all the important points from 1991 to 2015. The Support Unit, which is an important part of the school, was established in 1993. The teachers and school learning support officers’ (SLSO’s) support and encourage students in this stream to complete their education and learn valuable life skills. The garden, located next to the hall, was opened in 2002 as a Community Garden. The Honourable Laurie Ferguson attended to mark this occasion. Mr John Koch as well as 12 other volunteers from the community and Granville South High School Students maintained the garden growing fruits, vegetables and flowers. Our school also received a grant from the Australia’s Open Garden Scheme to help fund the start-up of the garden and we were presented with a plaque to recognise this which is displayed in the garden. 30th Anniversary Celebrations The last anniversary the school celebrated was the 30th in 1996 with a reunion in the school hall. VISIT: http://www.granvilles-h.schools.nsw.edu.au * PHONE: 9892 2654 * FAX: 9892 2764 FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com/Granvillesouthcreativeandperformingartshighschool The Football United program also helped to bring star Monique Coleman (American actress famous for staring in Disney’s ‘High School Musical’) to visit the school in 2011 and run a few programs. She spoke about her life experiences, her role as the United Nations Youth Ambassador, her Anti-bullying campaign and issues that affect youth. Mural in 2002 The wall opposite the canteen in the Quad has had a few murals displayed over the years. The first one was in 2002 and featured the motto “Rights, Responsibilities, Respect”. Another mural was finished in 2010 and celebrated Australia and its heritage. Students with Monique Coleman After being selected to become a partially selective school in 2010, Granville South High School became Granville South Creative and Performing Arts High School in 2012. This allows the school to focus on selected students wishing to enter the CAPA stream. Mural in 2010 Football United helped introduce an initiative to our school with the aim of uniting people of all cultures through soccer. Starting in 2009 they began by training a group of Year 10 and 11 students to become qualified coaches who were then given the responsibility of coaching the Year 7 students once a week. Football United also organised for our talented soccer players to train with highly experienced coaches. Three players from The British and Irish Lions Rugby Union team visited the school in 2013 with their management team to share football tips and their experiences to staff and students. The team only travels to Australia once every 12 years to play against the Wallabies so it was a real privilege to have them at our school. VISIT: http://www.granvilles-h.schools.nsw.edu.au * PHONE: 9892 2654 * FAX: 9892 2764 FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com/Granvillesouthcreativeandperformingartshighschool The official opening of the Dance Studio occurred on Friday 22nd March 2013; this area now allows students to safely and effectively practise their skills. As you can see our school has been very busy over the past 50 years and will continue to be busy for many more and continue to provide for students with quality education and various opportunities. The Helmsman Project is a program that assists young people to think outside their comfort zone and understand more about themselves. During 2014 a group of students were chosen and these students went sailing for 5 days on the tall ship ‘James Craig’, which is a 140 year old ship that used to carry cargo but is now a Sydney Heritage Ship. Students in my year groups: Years 7,9 and 11 have completed their Semester One tasks, there are many students who deserve to be congratulated for their extensive efforts and positive approach towards their learning. Reports will be issued at the end of this Term. I'd like to take this opportunity to invite students to attend the Homework Centre on Monday afternoons where we have expert teachers to assist them with their studies. Please obtain permission notes from the front office, sign and return them to Mr Woollams. As for the Senior students, they are encouraged to attend the CIRCLE on Fridays during periods 5 & 6 for support with their studies. SRC REPORT Student Representative Council & Senior Leadership News The SRC and SLG have been extremely busy this term. On the 14th March our student leaders were excited to capture a group photo for school photos. On the 21st March the SRC assisted with the Harmony Day celebrations. This special occasion acknowledged the cultural diversity of our school and wider community. The SRC organised a school assembly and delivered an Ode and pledged to uphold and continue to celebrate cultural diversity at Granville South. Our Year Advisers have been meeting with their respective Year groups to ensure everyone is following the LEARN expectations at our school. Our Positive Behaviour for Learning Team have been working on various areas of our school in order for our students to follow our school's expectations. Signs of our LEARN expectations have been placed in classrooms, the canteen and hall. Our Welfare Team is working tirelessly to put workshops together for our students to strengthen their leadership, raise their self-esteem and encourage students to focus on their short term and long term goals. Thank you to our teams for their collaboration and time creating opportunities for our students to succeed in their learning. On the 6th May Granville South CAPA hosted our annual school Cross Country at Campbell Hill Reserve. The SRC put their aprons on and cooked up a delicious barbeque and sold soft drinks to staff and students. All funds raised will contribute and support the participation of the SRC in our 50th Anniversary celebrations. A special thank you to Ms Paradisis and Ms Jouni for your hard efforts in assisting our student leaders on the day. I would like to wish all the families who are fasting "Ramadan Moubarak". Finally, wishing you a safe and happy holidays. Looking forward to seeing you all in Term 3. Earlier in Term 2, students from the Drama Ensemble, as well as students from the HSC Drama and English classes, attend the Casula Powerhouse to see Liverpool Performing Arts Ensemble's production of "AWAY" by Michael Gow. Mr Woollams directed and starred in the performance which enabled many students from various schools to engage with live theatre and the play in it's intended form. Ms Cameron and Ms Kidd attended the excursion with the students and were incredibly impressed by the work of the Entertainment students who were completing work placement at the venue and working on the show. It is with great joy that we’d like to congratulate our Drama Ensemble on their successful completion of an audition that will see them perform at Sydney’s Seymour Centre later this year. Audition success has been widespread in our Ensembles as our Circus, Dance, and Music Ensembles were also successful in their audition of “You Can’t Stop the Beat” for this year’s “Showtime” themed Our Spectacular performance at the Opera House! Parents will be informed of ticketing information for both of these productions as each event nears. A big congratulations to all of our Ensemble teachers for leading their ensembles to reach these successes. 50th Anniversary Celebrations The CAPA faculty have been at the forefront of the 50th Anniversary celebrations that have already begun here at Granville South CAPA HS. Our CAPA Ensemble classes have enjoyed looking back at the CAPA world from the last 50 years and have enjoyed reworking pieces to make them their own. Already we have seen our Year 11 Music class perform Outkast’s 2002 hit song “Hey Ya” and our Year 8 Visual Arts classes produce work inspired by Andy Goldsworthy. We look forward to seeing the items students are preparing for future 50th Anniversary assemblies. A big part of our 50th Anniversary celebrations was the writing and recording of our new School Songs with the team over at Granville Youth and Community Centre. Over 5 Friday morning sessions, our Year 11 Music class workshopped and refined their ideas in order to produce the recordings. The class were then accompanied by our Music Ensemble choir as the songs were unveiled with a live performance at our first 50th Anniversary assembly back in Week 5. In Week 6’s Anniversary assembly, we then unveiled our video clips to accompany both the Official School Song and the Hip Hop Remix of the school song. Both videos are now available to view via YouTube and our school’s Facebook Page so check it out! The Visual Arts Ensemble, under the guidance of Ms Wright and Ms O’Keefe, have progressed outstandingly with their design and construction of the 50th Anniversary mural that will be hung in A Block. The mural itself will be unveiled during our Education Week celebrations in Week 3, Term 3. We’d also like to thank those teachers who have added a special design feature to this project! CAPA Subject Selections As a final note, Year 8 and 10 students are reminded that the process of subject selections will begin early in Term 3. With a range of subjects available for selection in the CAPA faculty, students are strongly encouraged to start considering their choices early and to speak with CAPA teachers about their options. Students must consider their Semester One report card and results to see if the choice of one or more elective CAPA subjects is right for them. Making informed subject choices is often the first step towards success in senior study years. SALSA PROGRAM Granville South Creative & Performing Arts High School was featured in the Auburn Review this term with an article on the school's participation in the SALSA program. Special thanks to Ms Orton, the teacher who ran the program in the school, and Blacktown Medical Practitioners Association for their donation of $200 towards a nominated program. Many inspiring stories come to life through The Helmsman Project. One of these, is Emma Roulston's... “I was uncertain about joining The Helmsman Project,” Emma shared with us. “It seemed a bit scary. But looking back, I can say words like ‘extraordinary’, ‘amazing’ and ‘incredible’ just don’t cut it – there are no words to describe how I feel about The Helmsman Project.” Emma joined our program as a Year 9 student from Western Sydney. Before The Helmsman Project, Emma would only work in a team if she was in charge and, in her own words, she was even at times rude to others. But through coaching and supporting her to develop self-regulation and social skills, she increased her awareness of herself, her behaviours and the impact on others. Like many of our graduates, a change in perspective boosted Emma’s confidence and her view of what she is capable of doing in the future. “Before The Helmsman Project, I didn’t feel comfortable speaking in a group of more than five people. It was my goal to improve my confidence and my coach played a massive role in this. At my graduation I spoke to a group of nearly 100 people!” “If someone is going through a bad time and goes on The Helmsman Project, I can guarantee they will come out of it feeling so much better. The support given by everyone in this strange, scary environment is so important. I am now more willing to try new things and better equipped to overcome my fears.” Emma’s story is beautiful and humbling … It is journeys like these that inspire us, at The Helmsman Project, to keep making a difference. If Emma’s story inspires you too, you can help bring our life-changing program to more deserving young Aussies, just like Emma, by visiting http://thehelmsmanproject.org.au/ and donating today. The Helmsman Project believes that every young person should be supported to fulfil their potential and contribute to the creation of flourishing communities.
