This is an exciting time for the City of Emeryville. The Emeryville Center of
Community Life (ECCL) is under construction with the first phase scheduled to open this fall.
The Emeryville Senior Center is scheduled to undergo a significant renovation this summer,
with the first upgrades it has had in 20 years. Joseph Emery Park is also about to undergo a
total redesign with skating features that will promote physical activity and healthy living. These
are just a few of the transformations you can expect to see in your City over the next year,
and they show the commitment that the City has to improving quality of life of its citizens. I
welcome your feedback, concerns, questions, and thoughts on what we do well and how we

ABOUT US
The Emeryville Child Development Center (ECDC) is dedicated to
providing children ages four months to five years old with daily
experiences filled with learning, laughter, and love. ECDC is operated by the City of Emeryville to provide families living, going to
school, or working in Emeryville, a safe and caring center for their
children. ECDC is open year round and provides care for over 100
children daily.
The center is staffed by certified, professional teachers who help
children achieve growth in all areas of development. Bi-annual
assessments and monthly observations are completed for parents
to convey the progress of each child in all development areas.Age
appropriate lunch and snacks for all ages are served. The center also
boasts some of the best caregiver to child ratios anywhere in the
Bay Area too. Opportunities abound daily for each child to explore,
create, experiment, and savor the rewards that come with success!

The Center is now open to anyone interested in applying!
Priority will still be given to families that live in Emeryville, work in
Emeryville, have children in the Emery Unified School District, or
live in the 94608 zip code. Verification of residence or employment
is required when enrolling. The Center also participates in a State
subsidized program that allow for families in need to participate.

Experience the best traditional summer day camp in the East Bay! Adventure Works is specifically designed for the creative and active needs
of children 5 (or are going into Kindergarten) through 12 years old. All campers participate in fun activities based upon the selected theme of
the week. Campers will rotate through programs throughout the day such as: art projects, sports, cooperative games, music, dance, cultural
studies, group projects, hikes, environmental awareness, off-site trips to Bay Area attractions, and much more! Our highly trained staff brings a
wealth of experience and enthusiasm to ensure a positive, fun, and safe experience.
Weekly camp fees include a camp T-shirt, entrance fees and transportation for trips, and free nutritious lunches provided by the Alameda County Lunch Program. While healthy lunches are provided for all campers, those with active appetites may wish to bring additional snacks.

PARK AND PLAYGROUND PROGRAM
The Park and Playground Program is a drop-in recreation program
for 7-12 year olds at Anna Yates School Yard in Emeryville. This location will offer a variety of games and activities and is supervised with
trained recreation leaders. This program DOES NOT supply day care
services! This is a drop-in program and children may choose to arrive
and leave at any time.
Registration: Participants may pre-register or participants may
register on a daily basis at the Anna Yates location. Pre-registered
participants have priority if space is limited. All participants must
have a signed Emergency Contact Form at their site to participate in
the program. Emergency Contact Forms are available on-site and at
the Emeryville Recreation Center.

Join Oakland Ballet Company in discovering the many joys of dance!
Each day begins with a dance class exploring various styles, including creative movement, ballet, and modern. Students will discovery

Tae Kwon Do is a history of the martial arts that originated in Korea.
The knowledge of the founders of the art extends not only in the
past but make us aware of the present as well as preparing for the
future of how life was in the ancient times and how some of those

and disciplines in Tae Kwon-Do, extend from the training hall to our

Bring Minecraft to life using LEGO! Build a motorized walking Creeper, a terrifying Ghast, and a motorized Minecart! This project-based

engineering, and architecture while building their favorite Minecraft

TEEN PROGRAMS AND EVENTS
LEADERS IN TRAINING (L.I.T.)
The Emeryville Recreation Center’s L.I.T. program is a youth
leadership course designed to offer employment readiness to
teens. L.I.T.’s are volunteers between the ages of 14-17 years
old. They will work with certified Recreation Leaders to learn
the art of community leadership. L.I.T.’s are often later hired as
Recreation Leaders based on the leadership skills they have
gained during their assignments with us. Staff will also provide
L.I.T.’s with a working reference when they are ready to enter
the workforce.
This year the L.I.T. program will offer two five-week sessions.
Youth who are accepted will be assigned to one of the sessions,
with up to 12 youth per session. Each session will provide
opportunities to gain life skills, career training, job shadowing,
and community service.
HOW DO I APPLY?
Interested youth should complete the L.I.T. application. You can
pick up an application at the Emeryville Recreation Center. All
applicants will be interviewed by the L.I.T. Program Coordinator
as interviews are the first step into job readiness. Application
Deadline is April 21, 2014.

DROP-IN TEEN CAMP
Is your teen sitting at home bored most of the summer? Send them
over to our new Summer Drop-In Teen Camp! We will be offering
loosely structured sports and art programming to those interested
in participating, as well as general supervision for those who want to
just spend time with friends. Teens can pay by the day or purchase a
“Teen Summer Pass” that includes Drop-In Teen Camp as well as Teen
Center Friday Nights all summer long.

Are you looking for a fun and safe way to spend a Friday Night? No
worries because Teen Nights are here! Come enjoy Friday nights at

CAPOEIRA
CAPOEIRA
Capoeira (capo-AYE-rah) is an Afro-Brazilian
martial art that combines music, dance,
acrobatics and self-defense. Do to it’s African roots, music and songs accompanied
by percussion are an integral part of each
class. Capoeira gives you power, flexibility,
endurance and allows for self-discovery that builds your self-confidence. The challenge is within anyone’s reach regardless of age,
gender or athletic experience. Classes are available for kids ages 5-7
(capo-kids), 7-12 (young warriors) and teens/adults in the regular

The “Capo-Kids” program is geared towards children ages 5-7.
Children learn basic capoeira movements and music in a fun and
playful environment. The methodology used not only helps them
to develop basic attack and defense skills and increase coordination
of muscle groups, but it will also put them on a path to a mentally
strong and physically active lifestyle.

ADULT ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS
BODYLIFT
“BodyLift” is a concept created
and designed that generally
consists of using your own
bodyweight to skyrocket your
metabolism and burn more fat
24-48 hours after your workout.
This is known as “Excess post oxygen consumption” (EPOC).
Classes will consist of Circuit
training, Strength training, and
Bodyweight training at a high
intensity level (HIIT) in either
30 minute or 60 minute class
sessions. Ashley has personally
designed and worked out with these routines and achieved successful results, as well as using the BodyLift method with her clients.
So many muscles in the human body can be worked out with just
simply knowing how to move your body correctly along with the
amount of repetitions and weight put that is placed on our body.

Meet Your Instructor:
Ashley LaMorte
Ashley LaMorte is the founder and owner
of LaMorteLift. She was born in San Jose, CA. Out of high
school Ashley went from Nursing school to Interior design
school, but neither of these kept her interest. Ashley knew
she wanted more in life, she wanted to make a difference
in peoples lives. Ashley had always been physically active
growing up but took further interest in fitness in her early
adulthood. She began working out regularly and quickly
noticed how much of an impact training had on her, not
only physically but also mentally. Ashley began training others and loved it. She came to realize becoming a Personal
Trainer was what she was meant to do. Ashley became certified and shortly after moved to the San Francisco area to
pursue her career in the fitness field. Ashley now resides in
the East Bay area, where she is instructing fitness boot camp
classes along with training clients one on one. Ashley’s
belief is everyone can change their quality of life through
fitness and clean eating habits.

Art and Museum trips are scheduled to take advantage of the best

The Friday Club continues to evolve into the “Hot Spot” in Emeryville.
The Friday Club is held every Friday, but once a month the club

weekend. Friday Night Club is from 5-8:30pm on the 4th Friday of

The center strives to provide the best entertainment and continues
to offer the most current movies, award-winning series, and documentaries. Movies are shown every Friday at 1:00pm. Our projection
system makes you feel like you are at the movies! While watching the
movie, enjoy popcorn, a drink or other treats courtesy of the center.
Don’t like our selection of movies? Please submit your suggestions
or volunteer to be one of our “Movie Critics” that select the movie
you feel other members would enjoy. Call the office to volunteer for

WHAT IS ‘8-TO-GO’?
The ‘8-To-Go’ is an on-demand shuttle service for everyone ages
60+, or people ages 18-59 who have a disability, living in the 94608
zip code area. Once enrolled in the program, users just place a call
to set-up your travel itinerary and location, it’s that simple! Travel is
limited to locations to and from the 94608 zip code area (which is
all of Emeryville and portions of North and West Oakland including
MacArthur BART, Kaiser, Sutter and more).
WHY SHOULD I USE ‘8-TO-GO’?
This service is intended to help seniors and people with disabilities
travel within the local 94608 area. Whether it’s a trip to the senior
center, grocery store, favorite restaurant, medical appointment, or
religious services, ‘8-To-Go’ will provide the personalized service and
attentiveness not found in other transportation services.

HOT LUNCH PROGRAM
The center offers a hot pre-packaged meal daily in our main auditorium. The meals are provided by Nutrition Solutions focusing on using
low fat and sodium ingredients. This is a self serve lunch which runs
Monday–Friday, 11:45am-12:15pm. Suggested Donation for the meal
is $3.00 for adults 60 years and over and $5.00 if under 60. You must
fill out an application form to participate in addition to the Senior
Center Membership form.

Why should I pre-register for activities?
Almost all activities require pre-registration. Without pre-registration,
our staff will not be able to have the correct supervision or supplies
to make sure you have a great experience. Note: A few of our community/special events and senior activities do not require pre-registration. These will be noted in the activity/event description.
There are four (4) ways to register for activities/events in
Emeryville:

program! ActiveNet requires immediate payment, so make sure to
have your debit/credit card or electronic check handy. Avoid wasting
gas, paper, and time waiting in line…register online today!
WALK-IN
Register in-person weekdays at the Recreation Center (9:00am6:00pm) or Veteran’s Memorial/Senior Center (9:00am-5:00pm) for
almost every activity and event. Be sure to bring your checkbook or
credit/debit card too, fees are due in full to register for a program.

How do I register for infant and toddler/child
development center activities?
The Emeryville Child Development Center (ECDC) only accepts
walk-in registrations due to eligibility constraints. Eligibility for
enrollment into ECDC programs is open to all families with children
ages 4 months to 5 years. Be prepared to fill out an application form
when you visit and sign up for the monthly tour of the programs and
facility. Please call the ECDC with any questions at 510-596-4343.
Why was the activity canceled or rescheduled?
Due to low enrollment, instructor emergencies, weather conditions,
or many other reasons, a class may be cancelled or rescheduled
at any time. Staff attempts to limit these occurrences, but they are
bound to happen. If an activity is cancelled or rescheduled, you will
have the opportunity to join a rescheduled activity, join a different
activity, or receive a full refund. Please allow four to six weeks for
cash or check refunds to be processed. We sincerely apologize in
advance for any inconvenience this may cause.

On Tuesday, August 4th Join the Emeryville Community Services Department and
the Emeryville Police Department as they team up to host Community Block Parties
throughout the City, all in honor National Night Out.
National Night Out is an annual event to heighten awareness of crime, drug and violence prevention efforts, and encourage
community participation. Last year the Community Hosted 5 block parties, where Community Captains gathered their

GOLDEN GATE LIBRARY REOPENS!
After being closed for building renovations for several
months, the Golden Gate Library (5606 San Pablo Avenue) reopened on January 10. As part of the re-opening, the library returned to its former hours of being
opened Tuesday through Saturday (rather than the
Monday-Friday schedule that was piloted last year).

ABOUT THE GOLDEN GATE BRANCH LIBRARY
The City of Emeryville contracts with the City of Oakland for
library services. Golden Gate is the closest branch library to
Emeryville – but Emeryville residents have access to all Oakland
public libraries and have reciprocal library privileges for the
Berkeley and many other public libraries (just show your Oakland
library card to be eligible to receive a Berkeley or other public
library card within the statewide reciprocal city for no charge)
Golden Gate has a collection of approximately 35,000 items.
Circulating materials are largely of popular interest with a strong
emphasis on fiction and jazz music. (Golden Gate is well known
for its Golden Gate Friends sponsored Summer Jazz on Sundays
series. The African American collection is one of the largest
branch collections in the system.
Special-interest collections include a small Performing Art
Collection (including storytelling, reader’s theatre, puppetry, and
drama), and a collection of Chess “how-to” books for all ages. The
East Indian collection includes books for adults and children in
Hindi and Punjabi, DVDs of Hindi cinema (“Bollywood”), and CDs
of many genres of classical, folk, and pop music from India.
The branch is equipped with thirteen (13) computers with Internet access and word processing available for public use.
Meeting Room
The branch meeting room has a capacity of 50 people.
POWELL STREET FIRE STATION TEMPORARILY CLOSED FOR REPAIRS
The Powell Street Fire Station (Fire Station 34) is scheduled to be
temporarily closed for major building repairs between January 13
through late June/early July. The firefighters housed in Fire Station
34 will temporarily relocate and conduct its operations out of the
Hollis Street Fire Station (Fire Station 35) located at 6303 Hollis Street.
The Alameda County Fire Department (the City’s contracted fire services provider) anticipates that response times during the construction period will be maintained at a five minute maximum response
time throughout Emeryville during the relocation. Dispatch services
(emergency calls) will not be affected and will still be routed
through 9-1-1.

The Fire Station Improvement Project is designed to address a chronic
roof leak issue which caused some damage to the interior of the
building. The station was built in 1989 and the roof has surpassed its
useful life expectancy of 20-25 years Additionally, the fire station will
be updated with energy efficient upgrades such as solar panels installed on the roof as well as energy efficient appliances and replacement of the existing heating and ventilation system. The building and
its major subsystems should be sufficiently updated to be generally
serviceable for at least another twenty years as a result of this project.

Bike to Work Day is Thursday May 14, 2015
New cyclists, occasional riders, and die-hard commuters, Bike to Work Day is for you! Bike to Work Day is a fun campaign that encourages all
of us to saddle up and ride. Volunteers will be stationed at Energizer Stations around the Bay to hand out morning refreshments and free gifts,
and to count cyclists for the two hour morning commute. The more riders that are on the road for Bike to Work Day, the more funding the Bay
Area can get for much-needed bike infrastructure like bike lanes, racks, signage and more. To join the fun, just stop by an Energizer Station,
and pick up your FREE commemorative bag with bike goodies inside. The City’s five Energizer Stations will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m

Plans are underway for the 29th Annual Emeryville
Art Exhibition - a juried show of work by artists,
craftspeople and performers who live or work in
Emeryville. The Call to Entry application will be

workplace or submission of a cd. The Annual Show,
which opens in October, is our city’s biggest cultural

Update on Development Proposals
EMME RESIDENTIAL PROJECT ON CHRISTIE AVENUE
Construction was nearing completion at press time on this project at 64th Street. This
five-story building includes 193 residential units, including 29 affordable units.
6701 SHELLMOUND RESIDENTIAL PROJECT
A 211-unit residential project on the northwest corner of town was expected to have a
Planning Commission hearing in the spring of 2014. The seven-story building would feature
a mix of materials and landscaped sidewalks on Shellmound Street.
PARC ON POWELL RESIDENTIAL PROJECT
This four-story project on the corner of Powell and Hollis was almost complete at press time.
It includes 168 residential units and 8 live/work-flex units. The project includes 21 affordable
units. A park will be built between the building and Stanford Avenue.
LEPORT SCHOOLS
LePort Schools, which provides a Montessori environment for children up to age 6, moved
in to 6040 Hollis Street in the fall of 2014, and is seeking approval to open a second facility in
the former dog day care building at 1450 63rd Street.
CHRISTIE AVENUE PARK EXPANSION
Christie Avenue Park will be expanded as part of development of parking lots at the Public
Market. The Planning Commission was expected to consider this park design in the spring of
2014. The park will include a lawn suitable for movie audiences, a children’s playground and
nature trail, and a dog park.
SHERWIN-WILLIAMS SITE MIXED-USE PROJECT
Environmental review began on a proposal to develop 540 residential units and 94,600
square feet of commercial space, including use of the existing 70,000 square foot paint
factory building for offices, on the Sherwin-Williams site on Horton Street north of Sherwin
Avenue. Neighbors proposed alternatives, which will be studied as part of the Environmental
Impact Report.
3900 ADELINE RESIDENTIAL PROJECT
Construction has begun on a four-story residential building on Adeline Street at 39th Street.
The building will include 101 residential units and a café.
THE INTERSECTION MIXED USE PROJECT
A building permit has been issued for a project including renovation of the retail building
at 3800 San Pablo Avenue and construction of a 100-unit residential building on the parking
lot behind the existing building. The City will build a rain garden on MacArthur Boulevard on
the south side of the project.
HYATT PLACE HOTEL AT BAY STREET
This hotel is under construction at the north end of Bay Street Center, at 5700 Bay Street near
Shellmound Street. It will have 171 rooms in two six-story wings, shown here from the east
side near the railroad tracks.

The City of Emeryville ordinance states that it is unlawful for any
person to commence, transact, engage in or carry on business in
the City without first having obtained a valid license and paid the
license fee. Organizations operating entirely for the benefit of
charitable purposes and those exempt from filing information
returns under 26 U.S.C. §6033 (a)(2) are exempt from the
payment of business license taxes. However, such organizations
must still receive and maintain a current business license and
are subject to an annual renewal and statement affirming
its status as a charitable organization by March 1 of each

Summer Safety Tips:
BE OBSERVANT IN PUBLIC
When you head out to a fun filled destination, try to keep in mind that criminals may be sharing your day with you. Following a few simple
safety tips, you may be able to avoid being victimized by criminals who might be watching. Criminals are always on the lookout for an easy
target, so make sure you don’t give them one.
Always lock your doors and roll up the windows when you leave your car. Car thieves regularly patrol parking lots and try door handles to see if
they will open, especially in Emeryville. They are hoping for an unlocked vehicle that they can get into quickly and take anything that was left
inside. You should always store valuable items in the trunk, so that a criminal does not see them and become tempted to break in.
While enjoying your day, keep a close eye on whomever you are with and everyone around you. Look for strangers who seem to be watching
you or getting too close. They may be trying to determine if you have something they can take. Protect your companions and personal items
carefully, and make sure no one has a chance to steal from you.
SAFETY AT HOME
During the summer, people are outdoors working on projects like the garden, entertaining friends or relaxing. It can be easy to forget to close
a door or window and if they are left open it creates an easy opportunity for a burglar. Garage doors are regularly used by criminals to gain
access to a home during the warmer months. People go outside to do yard work and forget to close the garage door. Criminals may steal items
from the garage itself, which usually contains tools and other valuable belongings or use it as an easy way to get into your home. Once inside,
the burglar can grab an armful of things quickly and run off without ever being noticed.
Some criminals will work together during the summer months. One will come to your door and distract you while the other sneaks into your
garage, back yard or home to take whatever they can grab. Be wary of anyone who approaches your front door and don’t let them take up too
much of your time. Every year thousands of burglaries occur all over the United States. Teach your family how to guard themselves and their
property and do what you can to ensure a safe and happy summer for everyone.
If you see a crime in progress or suspect something suspicious is happening,
call the Emeryville Police Department at 911 or 510-596-3700.

Child Summer Safety Tips:
OUTDOOR PLAY
During the summer, kids go outside and are active. It gives them time to play, explore and make
new friends. There are, however, some areas that children need to avoid.
Talk to your kids.
Tell them that it is best to avoid certain areas because they can be hazardous. Places such as busy intersections, industrial work zones where large trucks frequent and homeless encampments where hazardous wastes are prevalent. Young children should never
get into a body of water unsupervised, especially if that water is moving. Other locations such as alleys, underneath bridges and abandoned
buildings may also be dangerous. Assure them that your only concern is their safety and you would never want anything bad to happen.
Most importantly, discuss with your children why they should avoid strangers. Talk to them about being polite to
adults but keeping their distance from people they do not know. Stress that they should never take any item from a stranger and under no circumstances should they get into an unfamiliar vehicle. Let them know that if they feel frightened or threatened by someone they don’t know,
they have permission to run away and call for help.
Encourage your kids to stay with a group of friends anywhere they go. A criminal will be far less likely to approach sev-
eral kids at once than a child who is alone and if something does go wrong another member of the group can run away to find help. Give your
children a list of important contact numbers including your direct line at work, 911 and other emergency services. Supply them with change to
use a public telephone if they are not old enough to own a cell phone.
STAY SAFE WHILE AT HOME
During the summer young children may be home alone for a few hours while parents are working. Make sure they know how to call you and
the police in case they need help. Leave a copy of the emergency numbers list by your primary phone and show each child exactly where it is.
Tell your children not to answer the phone if no one else is home, but if they do they should know that it is never okay to tell a stranger that
they are home alone. The same holds true when someone knocks on the door. Children should not answer at all but if they do they must never
admit that no adults are present.
In case an emergency does occur, your children should be aware of every exit in the house. That way they have options in case a fire is started
or someone breaks in. Show them all the ways to get out, including windows on the first floor. Let them know if you have any nearby neighbors
you trust, and tell them to go to their home if something happens.

ECHO’s Tenant/Landlord Counseling Program provides information to tenants and on their housing rights and responsibilities. Additionally,
ECHO has trained mediators to assist in resolving housing disputes through conciliation and mediation. The primary objective of the program
is to build awareness of housing laws and prevent homelessness.

Safe Routes on San Pablo Avenue
are Arriving!
It is getting a lot easier to cross San Pablo Avenue, thanks to two Safe
Routes grants received by the City of Emeryville. The first, $450,000 from the
Safe Routes to Transit program funded by Regional Measure 2 (funds received
from local bridge tolls managed by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission or MTC) was constructed over Winter at the Star intersection at 36th/Adeline/Macarthur and San Pablo Avenue with the final touches going in at 40th
Street and San Pablo Avenue Transit hub. The second $750,000 from the state
Safe Routes to School (SR2S) program, from Caltrans funded by the Federal
Highway Administration as a pass-through, is being bid now with construction this summer at 43rd, 45th, and 47th Streets and San Pablo Avenue.
Green bike lanes add visibility to the potential conflict areas at turning locations for vehicles crossing the bike lane at 40th and Adeline at San
Pablo Avenue. SR2S improvements include a new Rapid Rectangular Flashing Beacons (RRFB) on mast arms over the street at 43rd and 45th
Streets (replacing the existing in road lights with high visibility treatment and a pedestrian bulb-out and median refuge at 45th Pedestrian and
cyclist activation will be immediate when pushed. Both projects are installing bike chevrons, also known as “sharrows,” which indicate bicycle
shared use of the inside lane along San Pablo Avenue throughout Emeryville from 53rd in north to 36th in south, matching Oakland treatments
to the south. New crosswalks serve 36th and Adeline across San Pablo Avenue making it much easier to grab a slice of pizza at Lane Splitter
and serving the new housing developments coming at the former Maz building to be the “The Intersection,” 3900 Adeline and the proposed
family friendly affordable housing at 3706 San Pablo Avenue. A new bike only left turn pocket, accommodating east bound cyclists on Adeline
proceeding east to BART via Macarthur Avenue, allows cyclists to turn free of competing traffic, with a brand new bike signal. South bound cyclists wishing to turn to Macarthur BART can pass through the 40th intersection and turn in this left hand pocket to reach BART as well. Speed
feedback signs will be installed adjacent to the Emery Center for Community Life.
These improvements will be overlaid with a grant funded education and outreach program to each of the schools on San Pablo including Anna
Yates, Emery Secondary and Escuela Bilingue. The SR2S program includes mapping, safety lessons and events encouraging bike and walking
to school. In addition to a bike rodeo, events will be combined with Bike to School and Work month in May and middle schoolers will be led
through an on-road bike field trip as they are taught biking skills. Maps with safe routes and bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure are being
provided to all school children as part of the effort.
