Message from the Chief
The forthcoming Spring/Summer Season is one that will open slowly
like the buds of March flowers and by June the full colourful glory of
summer will hopefully inspire everyone to take part and have fun with
SAA-uk! But first, let’s take a moment to reflect on last season.
Our highly successful GENERATION 21 Concert Series gave young
stars of the UK Indian Classical Music scene an opportunity to
share their wonderful talents, whilst Light Night saw the rise of
Ravan, a ten-headed demon, amongst a 200 strong crowd of
Bhangra dancers. In November, we ventured out to East Yorkshire
and triggered the Hull Music Academy, which has over 20
enthusiastic students learning sitar, tabla, sarod and santoor.
Read on for a snapshot of what’s in store during the Spring/Summer
Season 2013.
It begins with the launch of our ‘Sponsor a Star’ campaign this spring to
raise £1,000 to sustain the Music and Dance Academies and to ensure
that the students have an opportunity to perform on a professional stage
each year. I look to you to pledge your support (see page 9)
In partnership with Opera North Projects we are delighted to bring
together three grand masters for a tour de force of Indian classical
music as they premier Sunset Song on Friday 19th April 2013 in
the stunning Howard Assembly Room. This is followed by Masters
Ranjan in May and onward we go to the celebration of the Solstice
through a Festival that brings to life the beautiful rāgs from the
world of Indian classical music, all happening from dusk to dawn on
Friday 21st June 2013 (see pages 5-8)
SAA-uk music and dance academies are going to be out and about
once again this summer, starting off with a dance performance at the
Breeze International Festival on the 1st June, then onto a larger dance
production called Vidyā at Northern Ballet taking place at the end of
June. July will feature a collaboration with a world music experience
called Trading Routes, ending with a final splash of colour, vibrancy and
community spirit at the Leeds Kirkstall Festival (see pages 7-10)
August sees the welcome return of SAA-uk Annual Summer School
2013, which invites people passionate about learning and making
music to immerse themselves for 7 days and be inspired, guided
and trained by leading exponents in the art of Indian Classical
Music. (see page 11)
I will leave you to turn the pages…remember to pledge your
support, we are depending on you!

MAY 2013
A chance meeting at a small music shop in the heart of West London
between Rishi and Stuart gave rise to the Masters Ranjan.
Rishi enthusiastically shares his knowledge and love of Indian Classical
Music and Stuart demonstrates to Rishi a style of guitar playing influenced
by European and American Folk and Classical traditions (John Renbourn,
Davy Graham, Michael Hedges, John McLaughlin) as well as Indian and
Arabic modality.
The meeting has led to a coming together of collaborative ideas; of
simmering shared passions, as the two musicians eek out common
musical ground. In adapting their styles, Ranjan and Masters have sought
to bring out the best of their respective traditions, allowing space for
something new to emerge. The pieces are in places serious, playful,
moody, and expressive, as they pay their respects to other cross-cultural
collaborations but strive to find their own place in the world of music,
tradition and culture.
The pair are joined by Mani Singh and Vanessa Rani. Together they
promise a night of music that perfectly encapsulates the mood of an
unfolding conversation on a warm spring evening.
This year SAA-uk is delighted to have the opportunity to share the journey that
the dedicated students of our Kathak Classes have taken so far since its launch
in September 2012.
Kathak is one of 8 classical dance forms that has its origins in India and is a
confluence of Hindu and Islamic traditions. It features fast footwork, spins and
storytelling, with delightful movements similar to ballet.
Community Dance Platform is a partnership between Northern School of
Contemporary Dance and Northern Ballet and provides a performance
opportunity for children, young people and adults to celebrate their
achievements in front of family and friends. In collaboration with the dance community of Leeds
