La Città Viola
Welcome to all! This is the last edition of ‘La Ciità Viola’
before the summer. It is also the last edition published by IT
teacher, Ms. Mcphilemy. I wrote a feature article about my
predictions and thoughts on the 2008 presidential elections.
We also have articles on the Top TV Shows recommended for
the summer, some beauty recipes, an Indian experience, a
flash of technology and much more! La Città Viola will return
in the fall of 2007. We wish you a great summer holiday and
look forward to seeing you all in September!
Politics and Elections

As 2008 approaches us, George Bush’s contract as president of the United States is coming to an end.
There are fourteen candidates for a Republican president and 9 candidates for a democrat president. In order
of appearance from left to right. Here are the four top candidates for the next president of the United States.
Their names are Hilary Clinton, Joe Biden, Sam Brownback and Rudy Giulliani. Two of them are democrats
and two are republicans. Below is a brief bio and history of each one.
Hilary Clinton was born on October 26th, 1947 in Chicago, Illinois. She is currently married to the expresident Bill Cinton. She is in the democratic party and is an attorney. Several women have run for president but if she wins, she will be the first woman president as all have lost in the past. If I was predicting
personally, I would say she would get the democratic nomination. If she wins the election, two families will
have been in office for a record of 23 years. These familes are known as the Bushes and the Clintons.
Joe Biden was born on November 20th of 1942. He is also in the democratic party and a lawyer. He was
married to Neila Hunter until her death in 1972. He seems to have a lot of experience with politics as well as
life and should prove a very good comptetor for Mrs. Clinton. The reason he has chances is because people
view Clinton as being ‘polarized’ and not wanting a 2nd Clinton in office
Sam Brownback was born on Septemeber 12th of 1956. Mr. Brownback is in the Republican party and is
currently a lawyer. He is currently married to Mary Stauffer Brownback. His current political status is a
senator from Kansas. He would prove a good match for Guilliani because some think that having a mayor as
president is catastrophic for politics.
Rudy Giulliani was born on May 28th of 1944. He was born and grew up in New York City. In fact, 10
years ago he was mayor of New York city. He obviously has political experience as a republican and I think
would be an excellent candidate for president. He was also an attorney from 1981 to 1989. If he gets ellected, he would be marked as the only mayor president and the oldest president starting a term at 70 years
of age.
I think that it is a falacy that teenagers of ages 14 and above cannot vote. It is not fair that you must be at
least 21 years of age in order to decide who will run your country. Politics should be taught in school curriculums towards the end of junior high and in upper school in order to help teenager make sane choices for
who their political leader will be. I also think parents should lecture students on which political party they
support and why. Another good thing to enforce would be to which political party they are against and why.

Chasing the cheese
By Martin Sedivy
If you ever thought that climbing down a 200 meter long hill,
which is probably steeper than a pyramid is crazy. Well you
obviously never heard of Chasing the cheese competition. These
people are not just climbing that hill. They are running down the
hill to get that one cheese.
Every year many crazy people risk their “lives”
in one of the most dangerous competition by chasing a roll of
cheese down a very steep hill. About 3000 people gathered up together at Coopers hill in Brockworth in the Southwest of England,
where they were watching the falls and flips of brave ones.
These crazy ones were running full speed down the 200 hundred
meter long hill, chasing a roll of cheese called Double Gloucester.
Jason Crowther from Pembrokeshire in west Wales won the first out
of five runs and he earned his third wins over the last three years.
“For this no trainning exists”, said the 25-year old champion holding 3.5 kilograms of cheese.
You just have to follow and concentrate on nothing else. But
obviously as you can see for this weird kind of sport, there is
no tactic. The winner can keep the roll of the cheese, the one
who arrives after gets ten pounds and the one in third place
gets five pounds.
Well you see this fun sport is not about the price, it’s only
about the fun and broken parts of bodies. Last year there
was 34 smaller injuries and about 5 fractures of either hands
or legs. FUN! Maybe you should try it sometime.

GLOBAL WARMING!!!
Definition: Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of the Earth’s near-surface air
and oceans in recent decades and its projected continuation. If the earth’s average temperature continues to increase, glacier retreat, ice shelf disruption such as the Larsen Ice Shelf, sea level rise, changes
in rainfall patterns, and increased intensity and frequency of extreme
weather events are being attributed in part to global warming.
Global warming is due to:
The greenhouse gases that are building up in our atmosphere:
Greenhouse gases have continued to increase in the atmosphere. This is due largely to human activities,
mostly fossil fuel use, land-use change, and agriculture. Over the last 200 years, more than half of the
warming effect of greenhouse gas increases is due to carbon dioxide.
The greenhouse effect is a warming of the earth’s surface and lower atmosphere caused by substances
like carbon dioxide and water vapour which let the sun’s energy through to the ground but doesn’t let
it leave the earth’s atmosphere, back into space. Some of the solar radiation is reflected straight back
into space by clouds and by the earth’s surface. Much of the solar radiation is absorbed at the earth’s
surface, causing the surface and the lower parts of the atmosphere to warm. The warmed Earth shoots
radiation upwards where it is bounced back to earth by the gathering greenhouse gases.
Fun Fact: Without any atmosphere, the incoming energy from the Sun would be reflected from the
Earth, leaving us with an average surface temperature of around -18ºC!
Effects of Global Warming:
•There are likely to be more severe droughts and/or floods in some places, and less severe droughts
and/or floods in others. Some models suggest a possibility
of more extreme rainfall events.
•By 2100, the global sea level are predicted to rise from
15 to 95 cm.
•Model projections suggest the global mean surface
temperature will rise about 1ºC and 3.5ºC by 2100.
How can we work to stop Global Warming?
Important contributions that can be made by ordinary
individuals are:
•Ensure maximum energy efficiency at home.
•Support where possible the provision of energy from
renewable sources.
•Drive a fuel-efficient car and choose means of transport
which tend to minimise overall energy use.
•When buying wood products, check that they originate
from a renewable source.

Sony finally released their PS3 in November 2006. It was meant
to be released as competition for Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and
the release dates were scheduled to be the same, but by some
miracle Microsoft actually managed to release their 360 on the
scheduled date of November 22nd, 2005 (companies can almost never do this) and Sony rescheduled the release of the
PS3 10 times throughout the next year. About every month they
made the release date be in the next month. Almost a complete year later Sony actually released the PS3 on November
17, 2006. The reason for this delay is unknown but it is likely that
they kept having problems with the software. The design for the
PS3 also changed significantly during this time *see left*.
The original controller design was
meant to look new and cool, but it
wasn’t as comfortable to hold.
The design that they decided
to stick with is almost exactly
the same as the PS1 and PS2
controllers but it is wireless,
the shape of the L2 and R2
buttons has been changed to
be more comfortable. The best feature
of the new controller however is the motion sensor, this
allows (cont. below)
PS3 games are on blu-ray discs which allows
them to have more features and grphics than
ever before. Previously the most you could
get on one disc was on a dual-layer DVD
which could store 8GB. Now, with blu-ray
discs, you can get 50GB on a dual layer
disc. Since every aspect of a game from the
simplest click to the graphics to the interaction with NPCs takes up space you can now
get much more out of a game than you could
previously. Microsoft also has a higher storage format disc for their Xbox 360 (40GB)
and has come out with some amazing games
such as Oblivion, and Halo 3 which is coming out soon. Sony should also be able to
come out with some amazing games even
though the first wave of games has been less
than spectacular.
The WiFi built into PS3s allows you to connect to the internet using the Playstation 3 internet browser and the SIXAXIS wireless controller.
To hear a funny song search PS3 song on youtube. There
is a song by the Fray that goes to the sma e tune as “How
to Save a Life”
(cont. from above) the user to do things such as tilt the
controller for better turns in racing games. Unlike the Xbox
360 controllers which use up AA batteries fairly quickly
the PS3 controllers have a built in rechargable battery that
recharges by plugging into one of the four USB ports on
the Playstation.
The PSP can plug into the PS3 via any one of the four USB
ports on it. The PSP functions then depend on what you
want to do, you can move music and videos between the
two or in some games the PSP can function as a controller.
In the game Formula One ‘06 the PSP turns into a rear-view
mirror.

My experience in India
By: Rachel Gardi
In December my mum and I went to live in India for five months. Before we left I was unsure
if I wanted to stay or to go, it was a hard decision as both countries are very different. On
the other hand I was quite excited because I have never changed school and I wanted to see
what other
schools are like and I was excited to make new friends.
We went to live in the south of India in a city called Trivandrum. It was quite a nice city, but I
was surprised because it was completely different to Italy. The school I went to was called the
Trivandrum International School. It was incredible in the inside and from the outside and was
huge!! It had a swimming pool and a lot of land. When I first started it was hard for me to
adjust because everything was very different but after a few months I really started to like
it, I made many new friends and the people were extremely nice there.
We also did a lot of travelling and sight seeing when we were there, we went to many different places which was very interesting. We travelled around the south of India to places which
were close to were we lived. We also travelled up to the north of India were we saw the Taj
Mahal which was amazing. All of the places were very beautiful and interesting.
The food in India was really really good. They had mostly spicy food, everyday we had curries and different interesting kind of things. In the south the food is very different than in the
north, in the south they put coconut in all the food. Instead in the north they put many different types of spices, I think the food in the north is better than the south.
The religion in India is Hindu, which most people are. It is a very interesting religion, the people worship idols which are in the temples. All the temples are very beautiful, they are colourful and tall. Each temple is dedicated to one idol. People go to temple at 5:00 in the morning
to pray. The idols are the gods, and each idol is a different animal. There is an elephant god,
snake, monkey etc. We visited many temples and they were all very beautiful.
The whole experience was really interesting, and I really loved it. We will definitely go back

Opening Of Lungarno Beach Announced
By Ava Runge
The opening of Florence’s first beachfront area has been officially announced by
the city council.
Located on The Arno River just under the San Niccolò ramp, it is fully equipped with sand, walking paths, and sun bathing lounge chairs. There will also be a fenced children’s
playground, a volleyball field and a new walking path leading to Ponte alle Grazie. It will be called the Lungarno beach and is scheduled to open on its inaugeration on June 18.
The city council decided to make it in the first place because it was thought people will beome more aware of the pollution of the river if they are spending time near its waters.
Enviroment superintendent Claudio Del Lungo says it may be helpful ‘rediscovering’ the arno and that the ‘main objective is to bring citizens into closer contact with our river’.
The entire project is costing the city an estimated 80,000 euro, and will be left open during day and evening hours throughout the summer.

CELEBRATING!!!
Festival of Saint John
Piazzale Michelangelo, Florence
Date: June 24th or 25th
June is the golden month for Florence because several things are happening. Every
year, Florence’s patron saint St. John (the Baptist) or San Giovanni is honored on June 24th.
Every year on this day Florence dresses up and parades, dancing and singing fill the streets to remember
Saint John. A parade with Italians dressed in traditional clothing starts with an early morning march to
the Duomo where the candle in the Baptistery is lit and a mass is held in the Duomo. We celebrate through
several events such as, Fireworks and even a historical football game. The fireworks start at night at Piazzzale
Michelangelo and have all different kinds of colours flying in the air.
Calcio Storico - Historic Football
Piazza Santa Croce, Florence
Date: 24th June
On February 17, 1530, the residents of Florence produced a similar extravaganza in Piazza Santa Croce in full
view of the armies of Spain and Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor, which had been laying siege to the Tuscan
city for over five months. The Florentines staged a game of football, calcio in livrea or football in livery. This famous
game is replayed every year on June 24, the feast day of Florence’s patron saint, San Giovanni, John the Baptist.
It is now the grandest event and display of historical and cultural tradition in the Florentine calendar.

by soldiers that used to be trapped in the city in 1530. There are no rules to the game. Remember to celebrate!

Aries
The transit of the sun into Gemini is
likely to have a two-fold impact on
you from today: firstly you’ll need to
be a little more careful with your cash
and secondly you’ll need to watch for
a tendency to keep things close to
your chest! If you want today to go as
planned then be honest with a friend!
Cancer
The transit of the sun into airy Gemini
could scatter your energies somewhat
from today. On the one hand you’ll
approach any new project or interest with enthusiasm, but you’ll be
less inclined to see things through! To
generate some staying power keep a
piece of tiger eye with you!
Libra
The sun moves into the fellow air sign
of Gemini today, which suggests you’ll
be inclined to search for that ever elusive greener grass, rather than focusing on what is right in front of you. The
reason for this is an obstructive aspect
from the sun; guard against it with a
piece of illuminating clear quartz!
Capricorn
As with Cancer the Crab you could find
that having enough staying power to
see things through will be your biggest
challenge, thanks to the sun in Gemini.
However, on the plus side now is the time
to implement those changes you want to
make; diets, fitness and health are favorably aspected!
Taurus
The sun represents identity, and the
fact that the sun has just shifted into
Gemini indicates a change in the way
that you regard cash matters. Try not
to get too hung up on the idea that
money is everything, because the obstructive sun/Venus aspect will cloud
your overview somewhat!
Leo
Oh dear; the focus for today will be on
romantic matters, thanks to an obstructive sun/Pluto aspect. Fortunately this
aspect fades tomorrow, but today it’s
likely to cause a certain amount of confusion and mixed signals from a member
of the opposite sex who has the potential to be a friend, but nothing more!
Scorpio
Don’t be too quick to knock back the
offer of a helping hand today. The
transit of the sun into Gemini emphasizes help and support, although a
minor sun/Pluto aspect could have you
over analyzing this genuine offer. Try
not to be too suspicious of someone’s
motives, Scorpio!
Aquarius
The transit of the sun into Gemini is
not likely to be a fabulous change; the
minor negative aspects flitting in and
out over the next few weeks indicate
that you’ll need to overcome a creative
block from today. Keeping a piece of the
crystal celestite will help those creative
energies flow more easily!
Gemini
Today the sun moves into your sign,
and given the couple of minor, but unhelpful aspects you will need to watch
for overspending and for miscalculating your budget. Avoid the mall if
possible and take some time today to
go through your finances: a boring, but
necessary task!
Virgo
This is unlikely to be your typical Monday
morning, thanks to the transit of the sun
into Gemini; job prospects, interviews
and career moves are more intensely
highlighted, with some changes on the
horizon but a word of warning: don’t
leave a good friend out in the cold
today!
Sagittarius
Today could prove to be a little tricky in
terms of romance, thanks to the transit of
the sun into Gemini. Singles might feel as
though they’d like to meet someone new,
while attached Sagittarians might feel
as though they need a little more space!
Avoid making any major decisions!
Pisces
Don’t be surprised if you find that you occasionally need a little breathing space from
today. The sun shifting into Gemini is what
will facilitate this change, and it’s one that
you should take advantage of, because
creativity and artistic leanings are very
favorably aspected today!

Drugs
Drugs can slow the messages from your
brain to your body, and the your breathing rate
decreases also causing an increased chance
- of getting lung infections. Drugs can also cause
you to not be able to move your muscles such as
arms and legs well. Also it can make a person
unable to respond to danger quickly enough.
Drugs can even make someone be unable to tell
when their body is actually feeling stress, and
the body is less able to cool itself which means
there is a ris of overheating and in addition, a
persons heart rarte increases.
AlcoholAlcohol can have many effects on a person’s
body and health. One of the many affects it can
have is hydration but hydration can also be determined on how many or how long a hangover
lasts. Alcohol can have an effect on one’s vision
and cause them to be unable to do things in a coordianted way. Sometimes if you have drunk too
much alcohol it can cause alcohol poisoning which
leads to death. You can also die from alcohol when
loosing too much of a certain substance because of
vomiting on frequent occasions.
SmokingSmokers are at risk of getting cancer in the mouth, and
tobacco smoke can cause gum disease, tooth decay
and bad breath. Smokers feel headaches more than a
non-smoker. Your bronchi gets inflammed and causes
a smoker to cough often.Smokers are 10 more at risk of
getting lung cancer and emphysema than non-smokers.
