ightning damages communications sites all over the world every
day. Most lightning strikes are to
the tower. Although lightning is a DC
pulse, the time from zero current to peak
current can be very fast. The fast rise current pulse generates significant RF components up to frequencies greater than
1 GHz. Most of this RF energy is distributed between DC and 1 MHz. When
lightning energy traverses a coaxial
cable, there is high frequency roll-off and
a slight propagation delay. This occurs
due to the unbalanced inductances of
the shield and the center conductor, as
well as the center conductor’s capacitive
relationship through the dielectric to the
shield. Since the pulse energy arrives at
different times, a differential voltage
occurs that must be equalized and prevented from reaching the equipment.
The amount of energy reaching the
equipment through the coaxial protector
is known as “throughput energy.”
The rated throughput energy specification indicates how much lightning
energy can reach the equipment input
during a standard waveform test. A very

really understand this new
technology?
low throughput energy specification can
be achieved with a DC-blocking “mechanism” inside the protector (no DC continuity through the protector). This
mechanism can be a capacitor or strip
line coupling.
A gas-tube type of coaxial protector
without DC-blocking has DC continuity
from surge-side connector center pin to
equipment-side connector center pin.
The fast rise time lightning pulse can
achieve over 1,000 volts across the gas
tube before the gas can ionize and
become conductive. Since there is no
DC-blocking mechanism, this high-voltage pulse is applied directly to the equipment input before the gas tube turns on.
If the equipment input is through a ferrite circulator/isolator, the incoming
pulse is converted to current in the ferrite’s resistive load, creating a magnetic
field that can realign the critically
adjusted field in the circulator, change
the magnet’s flux density, and damage
or destroy the resistive load. If the
incoming voltage pulse appears across a
coupling loop (as in most filters and
combiners), it sees a low-resistance short

Why Bluetooth? The Basics to Understanding This New Wireless Technology
By Henri Seydoux, chief executive officer, Parrot, Inc.
luetooth® wireless technology has been developed
by the Bluetooth® Special
Interest Group (SIG) consortium,
consisting of 3Com, Ericsson,
IBM, Intel, Lucent, Microsoft,
Motorola, Nokia, Toshiba and
more than 2000 adopter/associate member companies.
Bluetooth is designed as a
short-range wireless communication technology, transporting
speech and data. Bluetooth
works at its best where infrared
gives out. It allows transmissions
up to 300 feet, depending on the
power used, is not limited to
line-of-sight transmission, and
uses very little energy.
ISM band, a relatively noisy band
due to the presence of other radio
protocols, microwave ovens,
cordless telephones, and so on. To
reduce the problems caused by
this interference, Bluetooth also
uses frequency hopping. Every
625 microseconds, the frequency
sub-band changes—so fast that
there is little risk of several packets
in a row being lost. When compared with 433 MHz systems, or
even Wi-Fi-based systems,
Bluetooth is much more robust.
B
Bluetooth® Advantages
Bluetooth® technology has
several intrinsic advantages:
• Large deployment by
cellular phone makers
• A de facto standard supported
by Microsoft and Nokia
• Voice/data coexistence
• Low power consumption
One of the main advantages
of Bluetooth is the fact that it is
standardized, thus guaranteeing a
high level of interoperability. The
Bluetooth® standard defines the
concept of profiles that are specific to a Bluetooth® application.
Two Bluetooth®- enabled devices
communicating together with the
same profile will understand each
other without prior configuration, even if the devices are otherwise completely different.
Bluetooth uses the unregulated
RF Suppression Technology Overview
Comparison with Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi is not suitable for mobile
use. The power consumption of
Wi-Fi devices limits them to fixed
use, despite the fact that they are
wireless. The power required for
Wi-Fi is too high for a lightweight, portable battery to provide. The important fact to keep
in mind is that, for a given technology over a given distance, consumption is related to bandwidth.
With the Wi-Fi system, the bandwidth is more than ten times
(continued from page 1)
greater than that of Bluetooth.
Moreover, contrary to popular
belief, Wi-Fi is not a competing
standard to Bluetooth. Wi-Fi
applications are very different
from those of Bluetooth and are
often complementary.
Emerging Applications with Bluetooth
The major applications for
Bluetooth today allow the connection of mobile devices:
• Connect a cellular phone
wirelessly with a headset
• Connect a cellular phone
with an automotive handsfree unit
• Connect a laptop to a cellular
phone to access the Internet
everywhere
These new connectivity applications cannot be appropriately
performed using hard wire connections or infrared technology.
Bluetooth offers a low-cost, lowrange wireless standard needed
to simplify consumer electronics
connectivity. See the Parrot advertorial on page 10.
—Of Interest—
• The name Bluetooth was taken from
the 10th century Danish King Harald
Blatand —or Harold Bluetooth in
English. During the formative stage
of the trade association, a code name
was needed to name the effort.
King Blatand had been instrumental
in uniting warring factions in Norway,
Sweden and Denmark. It was
appropriate to name the technology
after him since Bluetooth involves
collaboration between the differing
computing, mobile phone and automotive markets.
• Every FedEx delivery person in the
US is equipped with three Bluetooth®
devices.
• In 2003, one million Bluetooth products shipped each week.
• Apple recently released the Bluetooth
Software 1.5 Update, which, among
other things, allows Mac users to
utilize Bluetooth® headsets.
• A cell phone user with Bluetooth®
wireless technology can punch a
button on the Toyota Prius steering
wheel and receive phone calls.
When a call comes in, the stereo
mutes so the driver doesn't have to
turn down the volume. Calls can be
dialed by using the keypad on the
car’s navigation screen.

Fully Managed, Open-Platform
Solutions Enable EnterpriseWide Wireless Applications
By Bob McDonald, director of channel sales, MobileAccess Networks, Inc.
f you are familiar with Murphy’s Law, you would agree that it is
likely that your mobile phone will not work properly when the
call is most important. How many times have you been embarrassed or frustrated because you had to ask the other party to repeat
or speak up, raise your own voice, or even repeatedly call back, while
literally dancing around windows, hoping the call wouldn’t drop?
Ubiquitous wireless voice and data service is now the order of the
day for both personal and business use. The need for an architecture
that supports multiple wireless voice and wireless LAN services on a
common infrastructure is increasing for large buildings and campuses, such as those of universities, public buildings and hospitals.
Because university students have more than doubled their
national cellular phone adoption rate, universities are realizing
the need to cater to growing demand for wireless voice and data
coverage within their campuses. American University (AU), one of
the pioneers in addressing this issue, realized that a campus-wide
wireless voice and data network would meet the needs of the
students and faculty.
AU’s plan called for mobile phones for long-distance voice
and text messaging and wireless local-area networks (WLAN) to
support wireless Web access for laptops. Their campus e-mail and
calendar functions would allow the university’s informationtechnology staff to decrease the number of installed wired phones
and data connections, decrease the cost of moves/adds/changes
in the student dormitories, and provide the mobility that would
enable students and faculty to be more efficient and productive. After
carefully evaluating options and conducting a thorough testing of
potential solutions, AU deployed the wireless in-building systems

and is almost entirely converted
to current. A DC-shorted equipment input loop directly shorts
the gas tube. The gas tube might
never see enough voltage to turn
on until the equipment has been
damaged since current flow must
go through the coaxial cable
jumper and equipment input
before an inductive voltage drop
across the gas tube could reach a
potential high enough to ionize
the gas.
Quarterwave stub @ 5V/div V
and 20 µs/div H
The quarterwave stub coaxial
protector is based on well-known
bandpass/band reject principles.
By using a coaxial “T” fitting and
calculating the length of a quarterwave coaxial section from the
horizontal center conductor to
the grounded base of the T, a
bandpass filter can be formed
at a given frequency. Since
most of the energy in a lightning
strike is from DC to 1 MHz,
it would fall on the lower-

frequency reject side of the bandpass filter and be conducted to
ground. However, if the equipment input is also DC shorted as
in the above gas-tube example,
the quarterwave stub will allow
significant divided DC and lowfrequency energy to flow toward
the equipment input. While the
above gas-tube protector could
eventually “crowbar” to ground,
the quarterwave stub will continue dividing energy between

Tone generators and probe kits,
dry transparent super mini test
modules, hand crimpers, and
hydraulic cable cutters are among
some of the products Bechtel has
been purchasing from TESSCO.
The Iraqi Telephone and Post
Company (ITPC) used the parts
for repairing their basic phone
service. The tone generators and
probe kits were needed to repair
the “last mile” of copper to the
subscribers. The outside plant suffered tremendously due to years
of neglect, lack of basic materials,
and the recent conflict.

The Importance of a Structured Cabling Tester
cables and completing the trimouts will, without a doubt, cause
some faults. The faults consist of
opens or shorts resulting from
wire damage during the pulling
operation or crossed, reversed,
open or shorted terminations
during the trim-out operation.
Numerous structured cabling
testers on the market today offer
similar features. Most models can
alert the operator to common
faults such as shorts, opens and
pair reversals. Some are able to
identify the more elusive splitpair faults, and several can measure the installed cable length.
Refer to the Wire Protocol for examples of cable faults.
The majority of structured
cabling testers establish that the
network link is faulty; however,
the operator still has no idea
where the fault lies. Although
the operator might have great
detail as to what the fault is, that
information is actually irrelevant
since all faults, once located, will
require a complete re-termination of the associated connector
unless the operator knows
which end is faulty.
Identifying a Fault
and Its Location at
the Same Time
he technological advancements in telecommunications and data communications have increased demand
for centrally stored, shared,
voice and data information in
most organizations. As a result,
these organizations must implement a detailed, well-organized,
structured cabling infrastructure
to support voice and data storage and retrieval.
A key tool in designing, managing and controlling an effective internal cabling system is a
structured cabling tester, or wire
map testers as they are often
called. The process of pulling

This is a measure of how
fast a signal travels along
a line. A radio signal travels in free space at the
speed of light, approximately 3x108 m/sec. A
signal travels in a transmission line at much
lower speed than this.
In twisted pair cable,
the velocity of propagation may be between
40 percent and 75 percent
of the velocity in free
space. There is a direct
relationship between
velocity of propagation
(V) and wavelength:
V = λf

Split Pairs. One pair uses one wire from another
pair. The cable will work, but crosstalk may occur.
Two or more pairs in the same cable may be split.
Vp is often stated either
as a percentage of the

time-to-distance figure
is used, it may be known
as propagation delay,
and will be expressed as
ns/100m or ms/km.

Upgrade Voice, Video and Data Network Bandwidth
Without High-Recurring Fees

recurring monthly expenses.
To illustrate, assume that a
company leases three T-1 lines
between two buildings for both
voice and data traffic. As corporate applications become more
complex, the business requires
additional bandwidth for the
data network and wants to keep
its current PBX system. It considers two options:
espite the uncertainty of
the telecommunications
industry in the last few
years, the demand for bandwidth has not waned. However,
the need to expand services and
applications has been constrained by tightened budgets
and cost cutting. This has
brought free space optics (FSO)
and high-frequency 60 GHz
millimeter wave (MMW) technologies to the forefront, allowing businesses to increase or
extend LAN-to-LAN data capacity and utilize existing PBX systems for voice services.
Traditional leased-line solutions
through local service providers
often require significant upfront
capital expenditures for equipment upgrades, as well as longterm commitments with high
monthly fees for services. In
response, selected millimeter
wave equipment manufacturers
offer a cost-effective, bundled
solution for voice, video and

Off-the-Shelf Wireless RTU Revolutionizes
Simplicity, Speed, and Savings
S
cadata Ventures has
recently introduced the
Master/Slave Wireless Input/
Output (I/O) Remote Telemetry
Unit (RTU). Each master/slave
RTU has a combined total of 34
inputs and outputs supporting
analog, digital, and 4-20ma loop
signals. The signal on any input
can be steered and mirrored on
any other master/slave unit’s
output, and vice versa.
Each master/slave RTU comes
complete with enclosure, integrated high-speed broadband
radio, battery back up, power supply, and lightning protection. The
fully integrated spread spectrum
frequency-hopping (SSFH) radio is
non-line of site due to its higher
power output and can cover distances of 10 miles or more.
Utilities use the master/slave
units for many applications: to
consolidate chart recorders from
Master/Slave Wireless I/O RTU
multiple sites, as an overlay to
existing SCADA systems to
reduce the cost of expansion, as
a method to manage multiple
water storage and booster
pumps, as a low-cost method
of relay sequencing, and much
more. One Scadata utility customer consolidates nine 4-20ma
signals from three separate sites
into one master/slave RTU.
Units can be ordered in
families of two, three, or four
units. Units come preprogrammed, or can be field
programmed using simple
programming software to route
signals to and from any other
RTU. Or, add the Scadata Quick
Software and Master Control
Center and support over 500
RTUs with full automated and
manual control, alarming, trending, reporting, and much more.

BreezeACCESS™ OFDM Solution:
Delivering High Capacity in Non-Line-of-Sight Conditions
lvarion Ltd., a leading
A provider
of broadband
wireless access (BWA) solutions,
announced its new BreezeACCESSTM
high-capacity OFDM solution for
the 5 GHz frequency bands.
Targeting SME (small- to mediumsized enterprises) and MTU
(multi-tenant unit) markets, the
solution enhances Alvarion’s
mature BreezeACCESS with features that cut costs and drive revenues in higher-bandwidth and
higher-margin market segments.
In supporting data rates up to
54 Mbps, the BreezeACCESS VL
offers throughput matched only
by fiber, but at a lower deployment cost per link than xDSL.
Combined with features such as
support for variable data rates, the
high capacity of the solution can
also be used to provide expanded
services and flexible service-level
agreements (SLAs) as demanded
by many advanced customers.
And the non-line-of-sight (NLOS)
capabilities in both urban and
foliage-dense operating environments mean operators can reach
more customers in their service
areas while reducing overall installation and maintenance costs.
The BreezeACCESS VL comes
complete with the full range of
revenue-enhancing and cost-saving features resulting from the
more than 500,000 deployments
of BreezeACCESS systems to
date, and it can co-exist seamlessly with already-deployed
BreezeACCESS networks operating in other spectrum bands.
The solution will be available
for deployment by customers in
the United States, Latin America,
Africa, and Asia shortly.
Commenting on the
announcement, Zvi Slonimsky,
CEO of Alvarion, said, “With
high capacity and a rich mix of
exciting features, our new
BreezeACCESS VL is the solution BWA operators need to win
over fiber and xDSL in SME and
MTU markets. A significant
enhancement to our proven
BreezeACCESS solutions, the
enhanced solution answers the
growing demand for 5 GHz
products, and gives our customers an expanded technology
migration path.”
With this addition to the
BreezeACCESS product line,
Alvarion now offers carriers the
largest, most economically compelling complement of BWA
products in the market and at
the full range of speeds and
price points. Visit TESSCO.com

OutPost XT Callboxes Provide
Cost-Effective Wireless Solution

require immediate response.
Oftentimes, the person requiring
assistance cannot adequately
describe his location. Automatic
numeric identification technology (ANI) provides a specific
encoded identification number
identifying the location of the
caller to dispatch personnel.
Ritron OutPost XT callboxes
are compatible with DTMF ANI
and Motorola MDC-1200 protocols. (See ANI/Status Systems
on page 1,170 in the current
Solutions Guide). Once the
push-to-talk (PTT) button of
the OutPost callbox is depressed,
the installed encoder sends the
callbox location information to
a decoding unit.
Ritron OutPost XT callboxes
have been selected as a cost-effective wireless solution for the town
of Sleepy Hollow in New York,
which operates on a conventional
VHF repeater system. The town
will be deploying 20 OutPost XT
callboxes installed with Motorola
MDC-1200 encoders along potentially dangerous rural roads.
Additional units will be installed
at various parks and playgrounds.
Emergency calls are received at
the police department central dispatch by a console utilizing a fourdigit numeric display decoder.
OutPost Callbox
Once the location of the callbox is identified, the closest patrol
car will be notified. These roadside
callboxes are expected to significantly reduce response time.
Motorists will no longer need to

GPRS/GPS Antennas Feature Higher 1900 MHz Performance
M
obile Mark has added several GPRS/GPS antennas to
its mobile line. These antennas
feature higher performance on
the 1900 MHz bandwidth.
The GPRS/GPS line complements Mobile Mark’s full line
of multi-band mobile GPS
antennas, available through
TESSCO. These antennas are
designed for navigation, fleet
management and automatic
vehicle location (AVL). Covered
frequency bands include cellular,
GSM, trunking/SMR, PCS, GPRS,
1xRTT, and Wi-Fi.
The new GPRS/GPS glassmount antenna provides a convenient mounting option. The
antenna mounts easily to front
or rear windshield with 3M® VHB
double-sided tape. Separate
cabling is provided for the GPS
and 1900 MHz interface. The
external whip measures only
31⁄2-inches long and is flexible
enough to go through a carwash
without removal.
The covert tri-band antenna is
ideal for applications where the
antenna should be hidden from
view. Typical installations
include inside a taillight, hidden
in the back deck of a car, or
under the dashboard. The
antenna provides coverage on
the 900, 1900, and GPS bands.
Surface mount antennas provide an effective solution for
heavy-duty commercial applications. Mobile Mark surface
mount antennas are available in
either a low-profile configuration
or a high-gain configuration
with external whip. Visit

True RMS Clamp-On Meter
Hand-Held Spectrum Master Designed to Meet Challenges of Today’s Wireless Networks
the challenges faced
A bymong
field technicians when
installing, maintaining, and
troubleshooting today’s wireless
systems are measuring low-level
signals, capturing intermittent
signals, and dealing with harsh
RF environments. Anritsu
Company’s new Spectrum
MasterTM MS2711D meets these
challenges and many others,
making it the tool of choice for
professionals who need to
quickly locate, identify, record,
and solve problems with
wireless networks.
Hand-Held Spectrum Analyzer
The MS2711D is designed
with a built-in pre-amp that
helps it achieve an industry-best
-135 dBm noise floor, which
results in more accurate measurements being made on low-level
signals. To accurately measure
intermittent signals, sweep speed
is critical. The MS2711D is the
fastest hand-held available, as
full span sweeps from 9 kHz to
3 GHz can be performed in
1.1 seconds, while sweep speed
in zero span can be set from
<50 ms up to 20 seconds.
Further improving the
MS2711D’s ability to identify
interfering signals is its
AM/FM/SSB demodulator.
With the ability to tolerate
input signals up to +43 dBm
without any damage, the
MS2711D is suited to handle the
harshest RF environments, as
well. Complementing this capability is the spectrum analyzer’s
dynamic attenuation feature,
which tracks the input signal
level and automatically adjusts
the input attenuation level to
protect the MS2711D in the
presence of high RF signal levels
and to automatically set the best
possible sensitivity when no
large signals are present.
Anritsu has been able to pack
all this capability into a true
hand-held instrument, as the
MS2711D weighs less than five
pounds. Is it easy to use? Yes,
measurements, such as field
strength, channel power, occupied bandwidth, ACPR, C/I,
and interference analysis, can
be conducted with one button.

Improved Searches on TESSCO.com!
T
ESSCO.com features a wide variety of search
options so you can find the product you need.
You can drill down to find a product by category,
browse by phone model for accessories or repair parts,
enter keywords, or use the manufacturer or TESSCO
part number or the manufacturer name.
But you’ve told us you want even more from our
searches, and now TESSCO.com delivers more.
The search engine is faster
than before. The new Quick
Search from the home page
searches key part number and
group names, as well as our new
Alias feature. It does not search
through all description fields,
reducing search time.
1
The new Alias feature lets
you search with the names
you use for products, similar
to our popular Product Index
pages in the printed Solutions
Guide. So when you enter
2
“butterfly” or “barrel connector,”
you’ll now find all the products
associated with those words.
You can compare two
or more similar products
side by side.
3
You can filter the results
from browsing groups and
sub groups to more efficiently
drill down to your product.
4
When you narrow down to a
small number of products (less
than 6), you’ll receive a detailed
description of each product.
When your selection is
between 6 and 40, you’ll see a
Quick Pick format, often used in
the printed Solutions Guide, to
show the key product attributes at
a glance. There is now an image of
each product. Then you can view
more detail on an individual product, or compare similar products.
When your search returns a
very large number of results, more
than 40, you will now see a much
more useful presentation. The
results will show each TESSCO
group and sub group in which
your product may appear, and the
number of matches in that group,
so you can immediately zero in on
the product set you’re interested in.
The new process allows you to
see a specific product or small
group of products as an overlay
to your main search—this means
you have immediate access to
the original search results instead
of having to click back to them.
Take advantage of these great new
ways to find and display products.

search features today!

be recoupled to the coaxialcable center conductor. The RF
protector can also be used as a
DC injector or “bias T” pick-off
circuit. This combines the lightning protection for the RF and
DC in one unit while eliminating separate devices for DC
injection at the equipment or

combination eliminates a separate DC feed to the tower electronics, along with the DC
conductor’s lightning protection
requirements.

broadband infrastructure, AU’s
solution supports the services
of all wireless carriers in addition to the wireless LAN.
Rice Memorial Hospital
also required an indoor wireless network solution that provided cellular voice and
802.11b data services for the
hospital. The wireless coverage and end-user wireless
applications provided by a

hospital’s medical staff to connect to voice and data applications throughout the hospital
campus and across the community. The system’s design

the addition of new voice and
data services without further
cabling or wireless infrastructure changes, thus minimizing costly moves, additions

new services are deployed.
