Term 1: Week 6B
4/03/2016
From the Principal
Currently I am a member of a team planning a conference later in the year for
educators. As a start to the planning process, the team was given some pre-reading
which included material from a book entitled: Educating Hearts: Seven
Characteristics of a Good School by A Maher and B Hanley.
The authors’ intention in writing the book was to assist parents to identify a good
school which to them is a school that promotes education of the heart. The authors
argue that society should take seriously the education of the heart in our current
world which to so many young people can be very alienating. Every child needs to
feel belonging and identity. In many ways what is suggested is reflected in the old
saying: it takes a whole village to raise a child. It takes all of us, parents, teachers,
policy makers to create a climate in which our young people can flourish and feel
valued. It is indeed important for us here at Lindisfarne to remind us of what is
our core responsibility and that is the education of the whole person – spiritually,
academically, physically, emotionally, socially. .
Congratulations to the more than 80 students who represented Lindisfarne at
the North Coast Independent Schools Swimming Championships. The team
also achieved great success: winning the Secondary Shield and the Primary
swimmers gaining 3rd place. Thank you to Mrs Maynard and all the staff for
their hard work and the parents who came along and also helped out.
The World Day of Prayer is an international ecumenical Christian laywoman’s
initiative carried out in more than 180 countries and over 1000 languages. Its
motto is “Informed Prayer and Prayerful Action” and is celebrated annually on
the first Friday of March. This year’s theme is “Receive children. Receive me”
In 2016 the country who assumed responsibility for the preparation of the World
Day of Prayer was Cuba and in 2017 it will be the Philippines.
The Lindisfarne senior sacristans with Rev Chad attended a World Day of
Prayer special event at St Cuthbert’s on Friday, 4 March. Here is a prayer
prepared by the women of Cuba for the World Day of Prayer.
Lord Jesus, when you took a child
and told authorities to become like her if they wanted to enter your kingdom,
what did you mean?
Are we to be naive or to ask questions?
To be innocent or to be trusting?
To be shy or to sing?
To be docile or to be open-eyed?
Show us how to become not the ideal child we imagine but the real child you
blessed.
Teach us. If we have done too much growing up, how to grow down.

From the Chaplain
Reflections for Lent
In the 4th century, St Augustine of Hippo wrote his
famous work “Confessions.” It was like his diary of
philosophical, theological and spiritual growth;
wrestling with his life experience and the reality of
God.
For anyone who has experienced the sport of
wrestling, or any kind of self-defense, you would
know it is physically and mentally demanding. It
requires a lot of training and conditioning, there is the
risk of injury, and sometimes the greatest lessons are
learnt when you are defeated in a match, because
even in defeat, you take another step toward your
next victory.
When one engages in mental, emotional and spiritual
reflection, similar claims could be made. It is
demanding, requires discipline, training and
conditioning, there is a risk you will be hurt, and more
important than anything else is the willingness and
determination to get up off the mat when you feel
defeated.
The season of Lent provides us with an opportunity to
focus on the emotional and spiritual wrestles in life; to
improve our skill, our resolve, our determination, and
our commitment to respond to the challenges of life
in a godly way.
One of the most famous statements in St Augustine’s
wrestle was a realisation that was summed up in one
statement; “God, you have made us for yourself, and
our hearts are restless until they find their rest in you.”
God Bless

Communication between Home and School
There are a number of communication avenues used
in the secondary school. At present, we have noticed
the most efficient is email. Staff are more than open
to any form of communication. However, please be
aware with teaching commitments staff may take 24
hours to respond.
Formal parent/teacher interviews are scheduled for
Term 3 once written reports have been received. If
you wish to meet with teachers prior to Term 3 please
contact your child’s tutor teacher or the subject
teacher directly.

Changes to Parking and Student Pick-up Area – Mahers Lane Campus
Since the start of the year there has been a significant increase in the volume of parents collecting their
children after school from the Mahers Lane Campus. The safety of our students is paramount, as such we
are going to trial some changes to the parking and student pick-up areas in an effort to continue to ensure
the safety of our students. We need your support to do this.
A trial system similar to the passenger collection area of the Coolangatta Airport will see the introduction
of a ‘No Stopping Lane’ combined with an extension to the student collection area. These trial measures
combined with barriers to separate students and vehicles, and new road marking and signage, should
address the increased flow of traffic in a safe and effective manner.
To assist with these changes we need your support in the following ways;
·
·
·
·
·
·
·
Please do not leave your vehicle when collecting your child in this area;
Please only stop to collect your child in the designated area;
Please follow the directions from staff to move along should you be in the designated
pick-up area and your child has not arrived promptly;
Please proceed with caution when driving on school grounds;
Please indicate when changing lanes and pulling into and out of parks;
Please consider the time it takes to collect your child and plan accordingly;
Please understand that this system works best when students are waiting for parents to arrive, not
when parents are waiting for students to arrive. Consider agreeing to pick up your child slightly later
than 3:30pm to avoid ‘peak times’ which include bus arrivals.
This will be trialled effective from Tuesday 29 March, immediately after the Easter break, until the end of
term when it will be evaluated.
I look forward to your support and patience during this trial as we continue to ensure that every student
arrives and departs in a safe and efficient manner.

Tweed Shire Youth Council
recording sessions commence and run all weekend.
Students are invited to register their interest in
working behind the scenes on the production side of
the recording. This album is set to release mid year
2016. Stay tuned for official release dates!
Three student nominees Eden Tokatly (Year 11),
Meg Whiticker (Year 12) and CJ McCreery (Year
12), were successful in becoming our School Liaison
Officers. Eden and Meg attended the first meeting
held on 24 February and were pleasantly surprised at
the potential of the Council to act as a voice for young
people. As a collective group, the local students will
propose and pursue community projects that may be
considered and enacted by Tweed Shire Council.
Broughton Anglican College Combined Schools
Workshop and Concert
On 10 March, Lindisfarne will welcome 70 students
from Broughton Anglican College for their bi-annual
interstate tour. Students from Years 8 - 12 involved in
the String Ensemble, Concert Band (which includes
Stage Band) and the Choir (which includes Chamber
Singers) will join with Lindisfarne students in a series
or workshops and performances. The day will conclude with an afternoon concert for the Lindisfarne
community. Everyone is welcome to attend the final
performance at 1.30pm at the Mahers Lane Campus.
Lindisfarne has become a participating school in the
recently convened Tweed Shire Youth Council. This is
a student leadership and civic program, that involves
young people in local government decision making.

Recording Studio Project #2
Calling all students as producers, musicians,
engineers.
At the start of this year, twelve songs were submitted
into the second studio recording project. Mr Lock
and Mrs Lush spent four days workshopping with
each of the talented students and ensembles. Each
student worked on the lyrics and music for their songs,
focusing on developing this work for future studio
recording projects.
Out of those 12 students, three have been chosen to
record their songs. On Thursday 17 March the

Open Classrooms
Last week’s newsletter outlined the many avenues
for communication between school and home.
One key way in which to foster strong relationships,
is through our open classrooms. At least once
per term, teachers will formally invite parents into
the classroom to join their children in classroom
activities. This opportunity allows students to share
part of their learning journey discussing their goals
and achievements. Be sure to check your child’s
class BLOG for dates and times.

Competition held at Ewingsdale, Byron Bay. If the
teams fulfil their potential, they will qualify for the next
round of the knockout league.
Hockey
Both Kendra Fitzpatrick (Year 10), and Jade Reid
(Year 8), have been selected in the Queensland team
to compete at the Australian Under 15 Championships
which will take place in Wollongong, NSW from 9 - 17
April, 2016. Michaela Bryant, Year 10, was extremely
unfortunate not to be selected this year.
On Tuesday 29 March, Kendra, Michaela, Jesse and
Jade Reid, Shania Myers, Jessica Courtney and
Tori Jones will represent NCIS at the CIS Hockey
Championships and trials in Sydney.
All Stage 3 students
were privileged to have

Fitzpatrick
and her mother, Ms
Margie Coleman last
Thursday.
Madison,
who was wearing her

students.
Margie is going to help train the Year 5 and 6 students
in preparation for the Fitzpatrick Cup on Wednesday
23 March.
Netball
The Tweed Saturday competition starts at Arkinstall
Park, Tweed Heads on Saturday 2 April. The senior
team will commence training in Ngahriyah on a
Thursday lunchtime from 10 March.
The representative season has already started with
two matches on consecutive Friday evenings. The
training matches are against other Southern Gold
Coast teams and gives all coaches an opportunity
to look at combinations on the court. Our Lindisfarne
girls have been instrumental in these preparation
matches and look set to be influential players in the
starting sevens.
LINDISFARNE ANGLICAN GRAMMAR SCHOOL
Six of our Lindisfarne young ladies spent Saturday
morning learning how to become a netball umpire.
It takes a lot of hard work and confidence to be a
successful umpire, so congratulations to Olivia
Moloney, Ebony Richards, Georgia Edgar, Ashleigh
Budge, Gia Milroy and Ellie Engel who will hopefully
be umpiring ten year olds at the beginning of the
season. Elli Engel, Mia Henry and Georgia Maynard
enjoyed a coaching session on Saturday afternoon
with Queensland Firebirds and Australian Diamonds
stars of the game, Kim Ravaillion and Gretel Tippett.
Amongst other skills, ex-basketball player ‘Tippett’
taught the girls how to do a lay-up and ‘Rav’ showed
the girls how to defend and dodge.

Coolangatta SLSC is recruiting now!
We will be starting our next Bronze/Surf Rescue
Certificate (SRC) courses on Sunday 6 March at
8.00am (Qld time) training every Sunday morning
for approximately eight weeks with an expected
assessment on Sunday 24 April 2016.
Kim Ravaillian explained to the group that she was
actually not selected into her NSW State team for
three consecutive years although never gave up. Her
determination paid off after playing one season in the
ANZ Championships League when she was selected
in the National squad. Hope for us all!
To complete the Bronze Medallion, you need to
be 15 years of age at the date of the assessment
and complete a 400m pool swim in 9 minutes or
less. All members completing a Bronze Medallion
will also complete a nationally recognised First Aid
Certificate. To complete the Surf Rescue Certificate
(SRC) you need to be 13 years of age at the date
of assessment and complete a 200m pool swim in 5
minutes of less.
Not a swimmer? That’s OK there’s plenty of other
ways to get involved.
Congratulations to Georgia who was presented with
a training shirt for her efforts on the day.

The Group 18 Tournament for Primary Boys and
Girls will be held at Tweed Juniors Club on Tuesday
