Steam clock in Gastown, Vancouver
Steam clock in Gastown, Vancouver Gastown Lions project. Greetings to all 202 F Lions On Sunday, Oct. 5th I had the privilege of inducting the members of the Wanaka Leo Club. A very enthusiastic group of young people led by Ann Saunders and her support team from the two Wanaka clubs. Thank you to all the other Cabinet members who attended. We wished the Leos well on their journey with the Lions organisation. Now to the matter of those MMR reports. We had quite a few not done again last month. Club Presidents and Secretaries, PLEASE make it your responsibility to make sure these reports are done IN TIME. If there is a Club having trouble please speak up and let me know. You are not making things easy for those further up the line who have to process the next stage . Deaths of any club members need to be reported to me as soon as. I like to write a sympathy letter to the families involved and sometimes even attend the funeral. A reminder too that all eulogies and photos need to be in by the end of Dec. 2014, not that far away, ready for our convention in March. On our travels we like to find if there are any Lions projects to see. Whilst in Canada we found only one and it was the steam clock in Gastown, Vancouver. Although it looked like something with great historic value we found that it had been built as late as 1977. Underneath Vancouver ,like a lot of towns in Canada, there runs a series of steam pipes and although the clock was to be built as a monument it also had an alternative purpose -- to stop the homeless sleeping on the warm grating. Every quarter hour the two ton steam clock whistles and shoots steam from its five whistles in its version of the Westminister chimes and on the hour it gives a toot from each whistle. A member of the Gastown Lions was very involved in the construction and the Club was a sponsor. As you can well imagine it has been well visited and photographed by tourists, including us! and is one of the stops on the “ hop on,hop off bus’ tour. Its 1.35 million members in more than 46,000 clubs are serving communities in 207 countries and geographical areas around the globe. Since 1917, Lions clubs have aided the blind and visually impaired, championed youth initiatives and strengthened local communities through hands-on service and humanitarian projects. For more information about Lions Clubs International, visit lionsclubs.org. WHITE CANE History In 1921, James Biggs, a photographer from Bristol, England, became blind following an accident. Because he was feeling uncomfortable with the amount of traffic around his home, he painted his walking stick white to be more easily visible. In 1930, Lion George A. Bonham, President of the Peoria Lions Club (Illinois) introduced the idea of using the white cane with a red band as a means of assisting the blind in independent mobility. The Peoria Lions approved the idea, white canes were made and distributed, and the Peoria City Council adopted an ordinance giving the bearers the right-of-way to cross the street. News of the club’s activity spread quickly to other Lions clubs throughout the United States, and their visually handicapped friends experimented with the white canes. Overwhelming acceptance of the white cane idea by the blind and sighted alike quickly gave cane users a unique method of identifying their special need for travel consideration among their sighted counterparts. Also in 1931, in France, Guilly d’Herbemont recognized the danger to blind people in traffic and launched a national “white stick movement” for blind people. She donated 5,000 white canes to people in Paris. Today white cane laws are on the books of every state in the US and in a few other countries, providing persons who are blind a legal status in traffic. The white cane universally acknowledges that the bearer is blind. For specific information contact your local government office for motor vehicles. Lions and International White Cane Safety Day International White Cane Safety Day is an opportunity to increase awareness about the white cane, which: • Signifies that the pedestrian using it is blind or visually impaired; • Alerts motorists of the need to exercise special caution and provide the user the right of way; • Symbolizes the independence, confidence and skills of the person who is using it. 1964: the U.S. Congress approved a resolution authorizing the President of the US to annually issue a proclamation designating October 15th* as “National White Cane Safety Day.” 1969: the International Federation of the Blind adopted October 15 th* as “International White Cane Safety Day.” * The above referenced date is a suggested date. Lions clubs are free to hold awareness events according to the schedule of the club and the community it serves. She has had to have a crash course in bone marrow donation, but has survived it with flying colours. She also managed to survive the Dunedin winter. We have been getting two healthy bone marrow donations each week for the past three weeks. After we get the bone marrow in the lab, it is processed and the stem cells are isolated. Over the course of a couple of weeks they have increased in numbers and are frozen down for a comparative study with MSC’s from individuals with Type-1 diabetes. Recruitment of these donors is ongoing, but if you or someone you know with Type-1 diabetes between the ages of 18 and 50 are interested then please do let us know and we can discuss it further. Our latest addition in the lab is Accuri flow cytometer from Becton Dickinson. It is essential for the research as it is used to check the cells that we are working with are indeed the stem cells we are interested in. For World Diabetes Day 2014, we want to make #TypeOnesie even bigger than last year so why don't you become a #TypeOnesie for the day? We certainly will be. What is a #TypeOnesie? Being a #TypeOnesie involves wearing a onesie for the day to raise funds and awareness for the Lions/SCSNZ Type 1 Diabetes project We want you to wear your onesie to school or work and be sponsored for it. And why not get your classmates or colleagues doing the same? Schools and universities plan a long way in advance, so it is never too soon to start thinking about how you can get yours involved. The 80th Birthday BBQ we catered for was held late in September and was enjoyed by all participants, both cookers and eaters. From all reports back it went off without a hitch. It also went off without much in the way of outside light, so some improvisation was called for. 100 Plus Run is on Sunday 2 November. Guest speaker for November is about regenerative medicine Wanaka Upper Clutha On the 13th of September we said farewell to our much loved and respected fellow Lion Shirley Rose. Our Lions Club was very important to Shirley. She was a charter member in 1983 as Lioness and 1993 when we changed to Lions. Shirley served on the committee, was president and held most of all office positions, some more than once. She was a very talented lady; everything she did was done to perfection, so when she volunteered, which she did whenever there was a need, it was done in true Lionism style. She earned the Lloyd Morgan award and was made a life member of Lions on the 11th of August 2006. Bronwyn organised a clean-up of road verges for last Sunday. There were 11 of us and we picked up rubbish from the main road start of Riverbank Road into Cardrona Road; from the Dublin Bay turn-off to the Albert Town Camping Ground; and from the main road turn-off where the vet is to the Albert Town Tavern.
