Can you tell me about this season’s topics?
We will tackle some controversial issues. Why do some black women bleach?
Why do people still turn to native witch doctors? Are we close to the Asian
community, or are we jealous of them? They provide the hair, our hair products,
the things we need. Why do we always buy from other communities?

T h e Retur n of Re al Ta l k
Good question! So, what's it like working with OH TV?
OH TV took a risk having a show like this. I say this because people don't want
to talk! Thank God TV is changing and OH TV's an example of this! We no longer
need to watch crappy programmes!
What do you enjoy most about hosting such a successful show?
# 2G E TH E RM AG AZ I NE
REAL TALK IS BACK FOR SEASON 3! ADEOLA ADEBAYO OWOJORI CATCHES UP WITH
THE SHOW'S PRESENTER TRISH ADUDU TO FILL US IN ON ALL THE DETAILS.
In 2009, Trish Adudu was awarded 'Best TV personality' in the
BEFFTA awards. When she worked with ITN she was known for
singing in the lifts. Here at the OH TV she fills our office and studio
with laughter.
issues through discussion. The other shows I did were alright but
I'm so happy to be doing a show that's relevant to the African and
Caribbean people, a show that respects us, our parents and our
community.
The happily married mother of two holds various positions like
chairing the Parents' Association at her sons' school and teaching
Media Studies in her hometown of Coventry. I had to find out just
how Trish manages to balance the demands of family life, work and
looking good.
Real Talk is back for a third season. What can we expect?
You've been on shows like ITV's Loose Women and Inside Out. How
does Real Talk differ from them?
Real Talk is exactly what it says on the tin! It's about tackling real
Not only do we have the big guests; we're also tackling the big
issues! We've had a real confidence boost. The first two seasons
were crowd pleasers. This season we're not afraid to ask real hardhitting questions.
Speaking of the previous seasons, what has been your favourite
topic?
I'm so happy hosting this show. It's like black Question Time, but you don't have
to be black to appreciate its content. Anyone can talk. We are discovering the real
talent in our community, and in our show people that don't normally have a voice
can be heard.
There are so many! I have really enjoyed discovering the
talent. There are some really gifted black men and women
out there.
Who has been your most memorable guest panelist?
There have been some amazing guests, including David
Neita , a lawyer and poet, and the comedian Miss London.
For me, the best show has to be ‘Who Wins Black Britain's
Vote’ in April 2012, with the Mayor of London Boris Johnson
in the panel.
What have you learnt from working on Real Talk?
One thing I've learnt is that our community has been silent for too long. Real Talk
isn’t just about talking but about listening. We show the community that we are
listening.

What's it like being a working mum?
It's incredibly stressful! I have had to organise my time
management, which is something I have had to do with or
without kids. You never get enough time to do your work; it's
a balancing act. I have to block out my day. Whatever happens
I try to spend at least an hour with my kids asking about their
day. I switch off the phone, switch off the TV and turn off the
laptop. It's something some monks advised me to do years ago.
I use that hour of switch off with my kids.
You're such a bubbly person both on and off camera! You could
never go unnoticed. How would you describe your personality?
Right! I think I am slightly eccentric! Slightly mad! But you
know, I'm really caring, I love to help people. I got into TV by a
complete fluke! And I do not want that to happen to people so
if I can get them on their way and give them a proper contact,
I'll do it. Because that's what we're here to do, we're here to
give back. Whether in time, energy or spiritually giving back, in
whatever way, that's what I try to do.

Do you have any beauty secrets of your own?
Keep laughing! That's my beauty secret! I love laughing and
smiling. Also, I have used the expensive lotions and potions
but they do not work! Nothing's better than a good old belly
laugh! It gets all the toxins out. My mum who's a West Indies
Jamaican swears by Vaseline, under the eyes and around the
mouth to keep the lines at bay. So I find myself doing the
Vaseline thing and I wake up with my skin feeling really soft
in the morning. Another tip I got from my late father is the
African chewing stick. It’s brilliant for glowing teeth! There's
a beauty tip for you. In fact if anyone knows where I can buy
some African chewing sticks, let me know!
So that's your secret! Now Real Talk is a live show, is it nervewracking starting a new season? Do you ever get nervous?
#2 GE T HE R MA GA ZI NE
No not all. I don't get nervous because I count it as a privilege
to do the job I do. I get nervous at really big things like meeting
the family but not presenting. Presenting, no... that's a pleasure!

OH SPECIAL GUEST INTERVIEWS!
A Y, A y o R i c h a rd M a k u n
" Yo u c a n h a v e a ll t h e t a le n t , b u t you still need a
p l a t fo r m. "
What inspired you to create a platform for up-and-coming comedians?
I had no real sense of direction at one point, and no platform. You can have all the talent, but you
still need a platform. I thought that I can also extend this to other people. This was how the Open
Mic comedy challenge was born. We discovered a lot of comedians who are now doing well in the
industry. That makes me happy. I still get messages from Ali Baba after he's seen something on TV.
He says: “I'm proud of you.” I got it from him, and I often message Seyi Law, Elenu, MC Shakara,
Akpororo and many others to say that I’m proud of them.
Tell us more about AY's Crib, your new TV show?
It is similar to Everybody Hates Chris by Chris Rock or Martin by Martin Lawrence. It is a sitcom
where I play myself, although in the sitcom I am a bachelor when in real life I am married. It is a
younger version of AY when he came to Lagos, living with friends, hustling and making ends meet.
The show is attracting a lot of attention in Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa and Kenya. And we want it
in London! Yes of course, I have been discussing it with the CEO of OH TV. I call him 'Oga' [Boss].
There is real interest even in terms of putting it in the OHBoX!
interview by Lola Ogunbadejo
H ARD WORK AND G RA C E
AY, Ayo Richard Makun, is one of the most
successful Nigerian comic acts. He is a creative
entrepreneur who has worked within standup
comedy, radio, and as a TV presenter, promoter,
producer, actor, director, writer, and event
manager. AY tells Lola Ogunbadejo how God,
loyalty to others and a strong belief in his brand
have been instrumental in his career.
It all started with Ali Baba. He gave me a platform. When I was in
university, I invited Ali Baba to a show I’d organised. When he came
he had a great reception. When I went to give him his balance for
his set, he said, “You don't need to pay me. Why don't you come to
Lagos, make a name for yourself?” So once I finished my education,
I went to Lagos to work as his personal assistant. Every time we
went for a gig he'd always say: “I have my younger brother here. He
will do his thing.” First, I'd get about 5 minutes, then 10, 20, and
eventually AY became a brand.
#2 GE T HE R MA GA Z IN E
How did you select your cast for AY's Crib?
"If your p roduct ion
is good people will
wa nt t o b e a p art
o f y our b rand."
We auditioned 96 girls for the part of Mimi, AY's girlfriend. An actress that relocated from England
back to Nigeria got the part. She took hold of the role of a spoilt rich girl exceptionally well, with
her accent and use of diction.
In the sitcom I live with two flat mates. One is a jobless graduate named KC, and another JJ who is a
fraudster. His role is challenging as we do not seek to glorify his fraudulent interests at all.
Another fantastic character called Hush Baby brings his Warri flavour. He speaks the typical Warri
Pidgin English. We use subtitles for this so that people can understand how funny he is. We played
the show to a woman from Pakistan. She enjoyed all the characters but with the help of subtitles
she would crack up even more when Hush Baby appeared.
You can also expect celebrity cameo appearances from African stars such as Desmond Elliot, Mercy
Johnson, and Uti Nwachukwu from Big Bro Africa. It’s a must watch!
People have become familiar with your famous skits, which feature African
celebrities such as Funke Akindele, Jackie Appiah and John Dumelo. How did this
come about?
People think it's difficult but all you need to do is to try. They ask, “How will you get Genevieve or
Nadia Bhuari to do this with you?” But if your production is good, people will want to be a part
12

of your brand. Everybody needs somebody;
everybody is helping themselves by helping
each other.
What is the formula for your
success?
It starts with God. His grace comes in and
that's where favour comes in. Hard work is
another factor. I hardly sleep! I’m constantly
cooking up ideas and calling Mr. A or Mr. B,
trying to make it happen. When you have
the finished product, after all the hard work,
and people love it, that's when you give the
glory to God. Others can be doing almost the
same thing as you, but you are excelling and
moving forward because of hard work and
God’s grace.
"Anyone is

'AY. Follow

Follow me and I 'll
back ! Jus t w ri t e:
me back .' "
AY Live was sold out. How was it?
I thank God. People here love the brand.
After the show I went on Twitter to see what
people were saying. I re-tweet all comments,
whether they are good or bad.
I tweeted but I didn't get a re-tweet.
I’ll look into that! Twitter is a great avenue for
feedback. Anyone is welcome to follow me!
Follow me and I'll follow you back! Just write:
"AY. Follow me back. I caught your interview
with Lola!" And I'll follow you back. It’s @
aycomedian!
Many people will remember you said
that.
Yes, they should! But even if you follow me,
please don't forget to follow Christ as well!

Rest l e s s C i t y
#2GETHERMAGAZINE
"one of the most beautifully shot films to come out of Africa
for a very long time" Directed by Andrew Dosunmu (2011)
written by Don Omope
C ontempor ar y Afr i c an F i l m D i re c t o rs
Don Omope, an international film critic and British
Film Institute’ advisory committee member lists
his picks from the most pioneering works within
the sprouting world of African filmmaking.
It’s hard to imagine that filmmaking was banned across Africa
before formal independence, given the huge number of films made
on the continent today! I spend a lot of my time watching African
cinema. When I say cinema I don’t mean Nollywood or films from
such video tradition. Don’t get me wrong; I am not suggesting
there’s anything wrong with Nollywood. Nollywood is in fact
one of the greatest film phenomena in modern global cinema.
My comments merely allude to the existence of another form of
filmmaking that exists in Africa, an advanced stage of filmmaking
imbued in the modes and nodes of cinema.
Over the years I have seen the emergence of a new crop of African
film directors whom through their films create profound cinematic
experiences that hold their own against the best of cinema from
around the world.
I have trawled through the plethora of film experiences that come
from Africa, from the big budget South African films, the vibrant and
unique Nollywood films in Nigeria, to the avant-garde films popular
in French-speaking Africa, and films made in lesser known African
countries and those from the Diaspora.
First on my list is the Chadian film director Mahamat Saleh Haroun.
Every young African film director interested in making cinematic
films true to Africa and hoping to achieve international critical
acclaim needs to pay attention to his films. In 2002, Haroun
made his first feature film, the critically acclaimed Abouna. It was
followed by Daratt in 2006. However, it was A Screaming Man which
won the Jury Prize at the Cannes film festival in 2010 that firmly
sealed Haroun’s place in the Hall of Fame. A Screaming Man is a
story about a proud, loving father who finds himself demoted in his
job and forced to work under his son. It is a powerful story of the
fall of a man and the choices he makes.
Second on my list is the director of the hugely acclaimed Restless
City, Andrew Dosunmu. Many have commented on Restless City as
one of the most beautifully shot films to come out of Africa for a
very long time. Cinematographically speaking, it is a piece of rare
art.
The New York based Nigerian director has quickly established
himself as a filmmaker’s filmmaker. His next film Ma’ George
coming out in 2013 is a Yoruba language film set on the streets of
New York featuring Angelique Kidjo among many others.
Congolese filmmaker Djo Munga is next on my list with his 2010
debut feature film Viva Riva! This was the most talked about film of
2010/2011. It is a mix between Scarface and Goodfellas but African
style! Set on the streets of Kinshasa in Congo, it is beautifully shot,
directed, and acted, with full of characters and action. It is a true
gangster film in every sense of the word. What sets Djo Munga
apart as a director is his willingness to tell stories most African film
directors would be scared of touching.
Third is my favourite female African director Wanuri Kahiu. Based
in Nairobi, Kahiu is an exceptional filmmaker. Her first film From
a Whisper, a powerful drama about two families affected by the
bombing of the American embassy in Nairobi in 1998, won five
awards at the African Movie Academy Awards. Her next film Pumzi
was Kenya’s first sci-fi film. It is a fantastic piece of technical
moviemaking. The film excelled in all the top film festivals around

the world, and won her critical acclaim as well as praise from
top Hollywood producers.
Common trends found in Kahiu’s films are high levels of
technical sophistication and strong female characters. For all
the ladies out there who have complained about the portrayal
of females in African films, Wanuri Kahui is your answer!
Senegalese filmmaker Alain Gomis is fourth. With three
feature films to his name and numerous short films, Gomis
is quickly establishing himself as another star out of Africa.
He is regarded as a highly skilled storyteller with an approach
imbued in narrative deconstruction. My favourite of his films
is Tey, a story about a man living his last day on earth. It is a
poetic story told with profound imagery, rich sound design and
a unique eye for directing.

My final selection for top African film directors is the
Nollywood director Kunle Afolayan. Kunle is one of the
brightest directors to come out of Nollywood and a leading
advocate within Nollywood for more cinematic films. His
film The Figurine (2009) was a great commercial success
and launched him as a serious filmmaker with potential
international crossover appeal.
#2 GE T HE R MAG A ZI NE
His latest film Phone Swap (2012), a romantic comedy set in
Nigeria, is currently doing the rounds in cinemas and if the
response so far from audiences in Nigeria and at international
festivals is anything to go by, Phone Swap will be Kunle’s
biggest and most commercially successful film yet. Kunle
rightly takes his place among my list of contemporary African
filmmakers because he is in a category of his own. He makes
films along the lines of what Hollywood is celebrated for today.
There you have it, my list of contemporary African film
directors to look out for. To find out more about the films and
directors I have written about or to read up on other directors
that didn’t make this list visit www.africanscreens.com.

OH TV CEO, Akin Salami is obviously very excited about AFRICA LIVE 2014 and I had a couple of
questions for him. I ask him, why Los Angeles? Why 4th of July? Why Independence Day? And what
is the OHBoX?
SO OHBOX IS THE OFFICIAL HOST OF THE FESTIVAL LATER THIS YEAR. TELL US MORE
ABOUT THIS AND HOW LOS ANGELES BECAME THE CHOSEN CITY TO HOLD AFRICA
LIVE 2014?
“The OHBoX is an IPTV platform, (an internet or web based television) aimed at a global African
and predominantly black audience. With the OHBoX we aim to create a place where you can get
the very best of African content wherever you are in the world. Our mission with OHBoX is to
bring together and support the black diaspora.
AFRICA LIVE 2014 ultimately has become a pivotal arena for launching the OHBoX brand
internationally. Originally as part of our plan to launch OHBoX in the USA we had planned to put
on a smaller scale Afrobeats festival in Los Angeles. In the process of putting this together one of
our contacts in the USA told us about an amazing venue in downtown Los Angeles called LA LIVE.
The venue is owned by AEG (Anschutz Entertainment Group), the same owners of the O2 dome
in London. It is a 2.5 billion dollar entertainment complex with over 5 million square feet of
apartments, ballrooms, concert theatres, restaurants, movie theatres and a 54-storey hotel. They
have held everything there from the MTV Awards to the BET Awards and other huge concerts.
We flew out to Los Angeles to meet with the AEG team, began talks about our plans and quickly
realised that there was a great opportunity to expand the scale and scope of the event. From
there we met with one of our international partners who loved the idea and one thing led to
another and AFRICA LIVE was born.”

o f A f ric a a n d b rin g it t o the
e n t e rt a in me n t c a p it a l o f the w or l d. ”
WHY DID YOU TIME THE EVENT AROUND THE INDEPENDENCE DAY?
“Once we had decided on AFRICA LIVE 2014 at LA LIVE in July we were drawn to the July 4th
Independence Day. It worked for people coming over from Europe and Africa. It also worked for
people in the USA already, as it is a family holiday weekend.”
WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FOUR DAYS OF FUN?

YET WITH SO MUCH UNTAPPED POTENTIAL, WHERE ARE
WE TALKING ABOUT? AFRICA!
One day before the American Independence Day, 3rd July 2014,
Africa is going to America. That’s right! From Thursday 3rd to
Sunday 6th of July, Independence Day Weekend, Los Angeles, the
home of Hollywood and the entertainment capital of the universe
is going to play host to one of the biggest Africa focused event ever

#2GETHERMAGAZINE
Your fame has exploded in the last
2 years. I saw you at HMV Apollo in
Basketmouth's Kings of Comedy show.
You made people cry! Did you know you
had that effect?
What do you want to say to the ‘mad’
people?
I can only give the Holy Spirit kudos for that.
What's the funniest thing you have ever
come across?
How has being a born-again Christian
influenced your comedy?
I do go to other shows to get some inspiration
but I don't want to lose touch with the Lord.
I don't joke with him because I am nothing
without him. I am one of the few comedians
that crack Christian jokes and gospel comedy in
mainstream arenas.
Interview by Lola Ogunbadejo
A DREAM FULFIL L E D
People say they want to attend your
church. Everyone wants to go to your
church!
Jephthah Akpororo, formely known as Akpororo,
is renowned for his comic act infused with strong
Christian message, for his role plays during sets
and for causing a stir online with his rendition of
Donnie McClurkin’s 'Days of Elijah'. In an interview
with Lola Ogunbadejo he takes us back to his Warri
roots.
At the Nigerian Kings Of Comedy you
performed as the last act of the night
with a 45 min set. People love the mad
man act!
How does it make you feel when you see people
laughing because of something you've said?
So happy, because I've fulfilled a dream! It gives me a reason to
raise my hands and say, “Father I thank you.”
So all the hard work has definitely paid off?
Definitely! Some people say it's all too fast; this guy is getting there
too fast! He just came from nowhere but there is nothing like just
coming from nowhere! Which nowhere? I've been working and
rehearsing!
Everybody is welcome!
"I'm n ormal b ut in
Nig eria y ou h ave
t o b rin g s omet h in g
new."
It's like people say, this guy is mad! Everybody
asks me, have you gone mad before? I'm normal
but in Nigeria you have to bring something new.
People have been talking about mad men in
comedy sets, but I added the demonstration to it.
Mad people; you are all my fans. Not that I'm
praying for people to go mad, no! But I love
them, seriously.
In Nigeria, so many funny things happen daily.
All you have to do is stand at a bus stop and you
will experience comedy. We have people that we
call "Agbero" [a taxi or bus tout]. They go and
collect money from passengers as if they are the
ones who own the bus! "Where's my money?"
they demand. "Bring it!" they hiss.
The Nigerian comedy scene is huge.
What do you think of the competition?
Is it tough to be noticed? If you are a comedian
and you can make it in Nigeria, you can make it
anywhere. There are too many of us. I've been
cracking jokes for five years but only got noticed
in the last two years.
How did it all start?
I won AY Open Mic and also competed in A Night
of a Thousand Laughs in Calabar, Nigeria. I came
second and thought, “That's not enough; I have
to be on top.” So I went back and I won that
too. In 2011, I won the title of the Best Gospel
Comedian in Nigeria. In, 2012 I won Revelation

Best Comedy in Nigeria. So I'm growing. It's not about coming out;
it's about staying on top.
There was a time when things were really difficult for
you.
Is singing something you're taking seriously?
Yes. I was into music before comedy. In fact in my church, I'm a
singer. I'm in the choir.
Is there an album in the works?
Yes. You want to take a shower, but you can’t afford the soap! Now I
can buy anything.
Yes! This year by the grace of God. Comedy is part of me but music
is my calling. I will get into music after this.
You were born and raised in Warri
Would choose music over comedy?
That's my home. That's my village. I love it! Just spend time with
my people and you will grasp that tone in my comedy. In Warri,
everybody is funny. That's why you see a lot of comedians come
from Warri. AY, Bovi - Basketmouth is not from Warri but he's from
near there - Ali Baba, I Go Die, I Go Save; all from Warri. Warri is the
place to be!
Yes.
You're multi-talented. You once sang ‘Days of Elijah’ by
Donnie McClurkin. Is that your favourite song?
Yes! Jesus said to me: “If you keep praising me, I'll keep raising you.”
Definitely. It was the first African remix I did.
My album! If you want to book me, you need to book me now! In
fact you should have booked me last year in preparation for this
year! But let me not talk too much. But I believe that God will bless
year 2013.
What’s your style of music?
Gospel. I can't score with secular music. I'd love to mix African
sounds with some western music.
You are full of surprises.
What do you hope from 2013?
“Our background should
never define how far we can
go and how much we can
achieve. Someone took a
chance on me and gave me
hope. I was adopted. They
gave me a future.
A future history.”

OHBOX PRESENTS…
A really exciting development for us is OHBoX
Presents. This is our plan to partner with the finest
filmmakers making films in Africa and bring the
audience the best African movies. OHBoX Presents
represents an exciting opportunity to bring together
stories and films that truly connect with the African
audience.
TWO STRANDS – OHLLYWOOD AND ACE…
written by Akin Salami
There are two main strands to OHBoX Presents. The
first is OHllywood. Via the OHBoX top films such as
The Mirror Boy, Phone Swap, Ije, Amina and Figurine
will be available on demand.
The Revol utio n I s OH Bo X!
THIS YEAR OH TV HAVE A MIXED BAG OF
INTERACTIVE TREATS IN STORE FOR VIEWERS
INCLUDING THE SLEEK INNOVATION AND
MUST HAVE ITEM THAT IS THE OHBOX. ARE YOU
SCRATCHING YOUR HEAD THINKING WHAT IT
IS AND WHY MUST I HAVE ONE? THERE IS NO
NEED TO PONDER ANY FURTHER AS OH TV
CEO AKIN SALAMI BREAKS IT ALL DOWN AND
REVEALS ALL THE NEW AND EXCITING PLANS
FOR THE OHBOX.
The OHBoX is a web based platform (IPTV - Internet Protocol
television) aimed at the global African audience. With the OHBoX
we have created a place where you can get the very best of African
content wherever you are in the world. Currently there is no other
platform like this in the market that allows users to access this
particular kind of content internationally. Our mission is to bring
together and support the best of Africa!
How does it work?
It’s very simple. It is a set top box that can fit in the palm of your
hand giving you access to hundreds of channels. Through the
OHBoX the app, which can be downloaded now from any App Store,
you can watch TV for free! Simply download the app, register and
the world is yours!
The second is the African Cinema Experience, ACE
for short. This is where we release films in cinemas
across the UK. We use traditional cinema locations
but we will also be branching out into some very
interesting venues.
“Our mi ssi on
i s t o bri ng
t oget her and
support t he
best of Af ri ca! ”
We will bring in the projectors, sound system and
of course the popcorn! But this is more than your
regular cinema. With ACE we will bring a little bit of
African razzamatazz to the movies. This will include
music, food and lots of swagger! It will be more than
watching a movie; it will be an event.
With recent acquisitions such as Phone Swap, Amina
and the unprecedented box office success of a movie
like The Mirror Boy we have shown that an African
movie can go into the cinemas and hold its own.
In the coming year we plan to go one better with
29
the release of more cutting-edge movies under the
OHBoX ACE banner.
PHONE SWAP
One particular film we are very excited about is
Phone Swap by the very talented Kunle Afolayan,
starring Wale Ojo and Nse Ikpe-Etim. We believe it
has all the ingredients needed to be a smash hit. It is
a romantic comedy about a man called Akin, (no it's
not based on me!) who is a corporate executive, and
Mary, a sweet fashion designer. They meet for the
first time at a busy airport where they accidentally
bump into each other and mistakenly swap their
identical phones leading to a series of unintended
and crazy consequences. Believe me, it is a very
funny movie and I predict that this is going to be the
first Nollywood film that crosses over and finds a
mainstream audience!
With the two parts of the OHBoX Presents strategy
– OHllywood and ACE – we will give the audience
the complete movie-watching and movie-going
experience. Our aim is to bring a revolution
into the African film industry where the best
filmmakers create films that are supported by an
audience who are able to watch movies where they
want when they want.

services. For example, common practice for many African and Caribbean families is to look
after children informally rather than go through a formal process of legal adoption.
According to Sir Martin Narey, former Chief Executive Officer of Barnardo's and
Government adoption adviser, there is a growing number black children waiting in the
care system rather than being adopted. This is a major concern for Lambeth Council.
Debbie Jones, Executive Director of Lambeth’s Children and Young People's Service is
determined to decrease the number of mixed race and black children waiting to be
adopted, particularly boys. “We cannot do this alone. We must work in partnership with
other agencies and boroughs," she says. "We want to make the process of adoption
quicker. We need to look at breaking down the barriers, real or perceived, as these keep
our children in care.”
ADOPTION STATS AND FACTS
•45% of children in Lambeth’s care are of mixed or black parentage.
•There are around 4,000 children from a great variety of ethnic and religious backgrounds
across the UK needing adoption every year.
• Most adoption agencies will not consider applicants under the age of 25.
• Applicants do not have to be a British citizen to adopt. They must have a fixed home in
the UK and must have lived in the UK for at least 1 year before starting their application.

C HANGING FUT UR E HI S TO RY
Janelle Oswald reports on OH TV teaming up with
Lambeth Council to campaign for the adoption of
black children.
In an ideal world every boy and girl would be given the same
opportunity to start his or her life journey – love, care, comfort, a
solid home, good school education and full family support – but
unfortunately for a lot of children, especially in Lambeth, this is not
the case.
The Borough of Lambeth faces particular challenges around
adoption in the black community. According to the council one third
of the 180 children in care in Lambeth are black. With few black
people willing to adopt, there is a need to challenge an ingrained
resistance and dispel long-held myths in the black community.
Some of these myths according to Alasdair Smith, acting head of
the looked after children's service from neighbouring Southwark
council, are that people often think you cannot adopt if you are
single, over 40, an unmarried couple, gay or in a gay partnership,
THE CAMPAIGN
The key message at the centre of OH TV’s multimedia campaign is that you never know
what our children can achieve if they are given a chance.
" O n e th i rd o f 1 8 0 c h i ld re n i n c a re

m y th s i n th e b la c k c o m m u n i ty ."
The principal aim is to encourage viewers to become adopters across the UK but the
campaign focuses on Lambeth which has a mounting number of children from mixed or
black backgrounds still waiting for parents. OH TV has produced a commercial, a short
film and several documentaries to capture the hearts of their viewers.
Patrick Campbell, OH TV’s Creative Director explained: “When developing the concept
of the commercial in particular I thought about what the highest achievement of a
young black boy from Lambeth could be. We have come up with a big gettable idea that
everyone can see and understand... the first black Prime Minister!" The commercial will

be supported by documentary made by Avril Evans that tells the
adoption story from a number of perspectives.
OH TV’s strategy will be to challenge cultural barriers around
adoption in the black community, and promote adoption as a valid
and acceptable way of starting or growing a family. “The reasons
why adoption is more challenging in the black community are
really complex, but we believe there are many myths that are
preventing people from adopting. We aim to challenge those myths
through our programming. If more people came forward to become
adoptees and change a child’s life, they could help the future of
countless youths who all have the potential to be Britain’s future
leaders,” Campbell adds.
"If y o u c a n o ffe r love, tim e and have space
and c o mmi t me n t f or a L am beth child then

The campaign has gathered a tremendous wave of support and
participation from OH TV's celebrity friends such as BBC London
News presenter Brenda Emmanus, TV personality Diane-Louise
Jordon, X Factor star Ashley Baptiste and actor Fraser James who
plays Britain's 'first black Prime Minister' in the commercial.
"You never know what a child is going to grow up to become if they
get the right start in life. To rob a child from their childhood is the
equivalent to robbing a person from their future," the multi-media
campaign broadcasts.
Speaking about the campaign, Lambeth's Communications Manager,
Julie Haley said,
"We wanted to work with OH TV on this campaign because they
understand the audience, they have the platform to reach the
audience and they have the skill and experience to deliver a highly
ambitious 360-degree cross-platform campaign. The Future History
campaign is a big exciting project that we hope will lead to more
children being sponsored."
Councillor Rachel Heywood, Cabinet member for Children and
Families says, "We will do all we can to recruit more adopters. If you
can offer love, time and have space and commitment for a Lambeth
child then you can be an adopter."
“Our back ground should not necessarily d e fi n e

OH SPECIAL GUEST INTERVIEWS!
“ Comedy is not somethi ng you choose.
Comedy chooses you.”
programs, there was always a time for some form of entertainment.
Church members would ask me to go up and tell jokes. That was
the beginning. I knew I had to find a platform, so I would go to
various shows, trying to get myself out there. Then I came across
the AY Show in 2006. I soon became the people’s champion after
appearing there.
How was performing on the main stage for the
first time?
I was so used to church people. Nobody will criticise you in church.
Performing in front of other entertainers was a new experience.
I was shaking, so nervous. When I dropped the first joke and the
reaction was electric, I got a boost of confidence! I felt like my
ministry had started and I had five members in my church!
But you can't start that groom price now!
No, let's start it now! Invent something! Let people know me for
starting something! After me, if they don't want it to work, that's
their problem. But they should try me!
What has helped your comedy most?
God. People have also been very instrumental. My guardian angel is
AY the comedian. Someone, a boy you don't know from anywhere,
came to his competition, won, and he accommodated him two
years. He let me live with him like I was his brother. He didn't try to
find out where I'd come from, whether I was good or bad. He just
took me in. He took me to shows. I studied the sets and the crowd, I
learnt a lot. AY is my mentor.
What else has helped you?
I N E VE R T HOUGHT I’ D BE A CO MEDI AN!
Akinlami Babatunde Julius, popularly known
as Elenu, found his way into the comedy after
winning the AY Open Mic Comedy Competition
in 2006. Today Elenu is best known for delivering
rib-cracking comedy, and stands amongst the most
popular funny men from Nigeria. Lola Ogunbadejo
catches up with Elenu to talk about God, life, love,
Lagos and comedy.
You are one of the funniest men in Nigeria. How
did it happen?
I give all glory to God. He's the author, the one that knows my
beginning and my end. I never thought I'd become a comedian.
Comedy is not something you choose. Comedy chooses you.
Growing up, I wanted to become a doctor. I studied computer
science and graduated with a first class from the University of
Benin. Then people started telling me, "You are funny. Why not
give comedy a try?" So in church, when we would have vigils or

You are engaged. Will we hear wedding bells
soon?
As soon as she's ready to pay the groom price! We are tired of
paying the bride price! Every time they use the excuse that she will
be leaving her father and mother. Am I not leaving my father and
mother too? So let us change it for once! I mean right now, I don't
want to say I found love in the wrong place, but she's Igbo and
she's the only girl in the family! I'm calculating the price list for the

ever seen a bike with a car stereo? We have bikes with a car stereo
and DJ speakers! If you have a gathering of 2,000 people, one bike
with a car stereo and speakers, you can feed all the people with
music. Just one bike!
Do you see yourself creating platforms for others
like AY does?
If God gives me the right resources I will. But not just with comedy.
What is the best piece of advice you have
received?
When you yearn to be like somebody else you can only be a
shadow of that person. Learn to know that there is nobody like you.
I am the best version of myself. Be original, that is all.

Starring: Isaiah Washington, Genienve Nnaji, Vivica A Fox, Jimmy Jean-Louis, Stephanie Okereke,
Ebbe Bassey, Evan Brinkman and Rachel Oniga
Director and Writer: Tony Abulu
Genre: Drama
Doctor Bello follows the story of Doctor Michael
Durant (Isaiah Washington), a hardworking AfricanAmerican cancer specialist from New York. Faced
with a number of personal difficulties such as
dealing with the traumatic loss of his 10-year-old
daughter from cancer and a failing marriage with
his wife (Vivica A. Fox), he immerses himself in work
at the hospital and forms a close bond with a sick
and loving 7-year-old boy Sam (Evan Brinkman).
Sam’s health deteriorates to the point that Durant
seeks alternative means of treatment after
recommendation from Nurse Helen (Ebbe Bassey).
After Durant is introduced to Doctor Bello (Jimmy
Jean-Louis), a traditional doctor from Nigeria, his life
takes an unexpected turn. What follows for him is
a journey that leads him to Ondo State, Nigeria. It
is the trip to Africa that unfolds a story of bravery,
discovery of destiny, new love, new frontiers and
TU RNIN G POINT
Starring: Jackie Appiah, Igoni Archibong, Oge Okoye, K.D Aubert, Ernie Hudson, Todd Bridges and
Patience Ozokwor
Director and Writer: Niyi Towolani
Genre: Drama
This film validates the claim that the player
will always get played. Hot shot investment
banker Ade (Igoni Archibong) is known to
bring his ‘A game’ to the ladies of New York
City, but even this smooth operator was
not prepared for the cards his mother dealt
him when he travelled for his father's 10year anniversary memorial. On arrival he is
welcomed by the submissive arranged wife
(Jackie Appiah) chosen by his meddling mother
(Patience Ozokwor). Ade's keen-for-marriage
African-American girlfriend Stacey Williams
(Karen Denise Aubert) can't stand a chance
against the cultural barriers of tradition that
dismisses her as a suitable partner, due to
her “untraceable roots". Ade is full of pride
and arrogance but his cover is blown when
his American sweetheart comes face to face
with his African other and her abrasive highly
candid friend Ebony (Oge Okoye). Ade is set
to experience the consequences of his actions
when his career and reputation is caught in the
crossfire of domestic violence, lies, deceit, moral
justifications, court proceedings and corporate
black-listing until the final shot of redemption
is fired.
At the core of this drama and with bouts
of humour stand issues of ethnic prejudice
addressed to great effect. Amongst a
combination of African and American stars that
include child star Todd Bridges (Willis, Different
Strokes), the stars who shine the brightest are
cinematographer Timur Civan and UK based
writer/director Niyi Towolani. This visually
captivating and refined vehicle takes Nollywood
to the right direction.
a return to his roots. This collaboration between
Hollywood and Nollywood works perfectly, both
in the mix of cultures and in the blend of AfricanAmerican and African talents with actors such as
Jimmy Jean-Louis (Doctor Bello) Isaiah Washington
(Doctor Durant), Genevieve Nnaji (Doctor Eniola
Adio), Ebbe Bassey (Nurse Helen) and a host of
others.
The film becomes more alive as an adventure begins
to unfold in Africa. There are unavoidably elements
of humour with scenes involving local civilians and
police in Lagos. Tony Abulu is successfully able to
create a very enchanting movie and capture the
beauty and mystery of western Nigeria.

PHONE SWAP – Changi ng t h e F a c e o f N o l l y w o o d
A host of industry professionals and acquaintances graced London's
prestigious British Film Institute (BFI) Southbank venue on Friday
10th November 2012 for the hugely anticipated industry screening
of Kunle Afolayan’s smash hit movie Phone Swap.
OHBoX Presents and OH Films successfully hosted the first
screening of critically acclaimed film in London in conjunction with
New Nigeria Cinema by attracting a large number of guests from
the theatre, entertainment and film industry. Award-winning film
director Kunle Afolayan and lead star Wale Ojo were joined by a
crowd of well-wishers, industry professionals and fellow film buffs
such as Nollywood actress Kiki Omeli, Shattered Hearts stars Fatima
Jabbe and Theodora Ibekwe, Maami film director Tunde Kelani,
British actor Will Johnson, CEO of OH TV Akin Salami, CEO of BEN
TV Alistair Soyode and many more.
The event was well attended with over 400 plus guests who packed
the BFI auditorium to full capacity. Following massive success
with star-studded premieres in Lagos, Abuja, and Accra earlier
this year, Phone Swap was tipped to do exceedingly well in Britain
and Nigerian diaspora. The preview screening was organised in
partnership with OH Africa to set the bar and promotion of the film
in order to get the ball of excitement rolling with the international
audience.
Lead actor of Phone Swap Wale Ojo commented, "It was great
working with all the cast and the talented director Kunle. Having
the screening at the BFI is great; BFI is the home of film and the
BFI London Film Festival. You have all types of films here from
Hollywood to Bollywood, so I'm really excited it is being screened
here. The audience reaction was fantastic. I loved it. We showed it
in Nigeria and Nigerians are always a great audience. But then it's
interesting to see the reaction over here. People were blowing with
laughter; it was great to see that."
The industry screening proved to be a terrific success with many
guests who were thoroughly entertained by the film's ingenious
comedic scenes and clever storyline. Following the screening a
Q&A session with Director Kunle Afolayan and lead actor Wale Ojo

OH Films, a subsidiary of OH TV partnered with filmmaker Kunle
Afolayan in a joint effort to bring Phone Swap to an international
audience and promote it on a wider scale. OH Films has a mission
to collaborate with talented filmmakers and also hold an active
role in the promotion of smart commercial films on a global level.
Speaking of his excitement of the event and the collaboration with
OH Films, director Kunle Afolayan said; "I'm excited because the
turnout was great and I'm glad because the people have related
so well to the film. It's great to have companies like OH Films on
board. Distribution of African films is a major challenge, so we can
now have that sorted and be able to focus on creativity and making
great films. So I'm very excited."

The aim of OH Films is to work closely with distributing
partners and assume responsibility for generating talent and the
development process of quality movies. Founded in 2010, OH
Films specialises in the creation and progression of premium
entertainment content and partnering directly with leading
creative talent.
Patrick Campbell, Creative Director of the OH TV Network said,
"What it means for us to have the film here is the fact that it
needs to be brought to a broader audience. African cinema is world
cinema and we want as many people as possible to see African
films. I want people from all over to enjoy great stories such as this.
The BFI have screened all the great films so why not? OH Films
have decided to create the best place for African films and want to
continue collaborating with filmmakers. Phone Swap is one of the
best to come out of Africa so for us it was a no-brainer. We will be
releasing it globally over the next few months."
This movie proved to be effortlessly funny with an eclectic
bunch of characters such as Mary’s boisterous sister Cynthia
(Ada Ameh), her hilarious father (Chika Okapala) and
comical twin brothers’ Alpha and Omega. It captures an
element of realism well with inclusion of local dialects and
vernacular and even the insertion of the Twi language from
Ghana, thanks to the ridiculously entertaining character of
Akin’s disgruntled ex-girlfriend Gina (Lydia Forson). This film
definitely ticks all the boxes and charms every visual and
audible sense smoothly.

Phone Swap centres on the story of two professionals living
and working in Lagos with two very different lives. Akin (Wale
Ojo), a grumpy uptight corporate professional is on a mission
to conquer his company and become the next CEO, but
first he must deliver important documents in person to his
Chairman in Abuja. On the other side of town Mary (Nse Ikpe
Etim), a sweet-natured seamstress, is also given leave by her
rude and reluctant boss to travel to her hometown Owerri,
to bring peace to a family feud. Whilst rushing to catch their
respective flights in a typically busy Lagos Airport, the two
crash into each other, dropping their bags and belongings.
In a fit of rage Akin begins to demand for his phone and
mistakenly picks up Mary’s identical BlackBerry handset. It is
the swapping of phones that leads to a series of unintended
and hilarious consequences such as both Mary and Akin
boarding each other’s flights mistakenly. Akin is forced to
adjust to rural life in Owerri with Mary’s family whilst Mary
becomes acquainted with Akin’s mother in Abuja.

O H A FRICA
Mum. Initially, the idea seemed so huge because Africa is so huge!
I’m so happy that we started in the slums of Africa. It shows the
reality as it is but it is also uplifting.
What is Pamper Your Mum about?
It finds mothers who struggle and deserve a reward. We focus on
rural areas because these are the mothers who might feel they
have been forgotten but whose stories can inspire other women.
For one day only we pamper these women in a spa. Also some
need money for rent or school. Every mother walks away with
something they really need.
Real Talk already has a successful platform in the UK. Real Talk is
a live, topical and interactive debate show with live phone calls
and social networking on the OH TV network attracting globally
over 25 million viewers. Watch Real Talk Africa each week and get

How do you keep your emotions in check?
Pamper Your Mum
I would love to go to Somalia and Rwanda as they have been
through immense political instability.
Pamper Your Mum is a new TV series rewarding deserving
mothers based in West Africa with endearing stories of hardship
and strength. Hosted by award winning presenter Anita Erskine,
each episode features two mothers and their stories with the
payoff of their reward.
Even before I get on the set I have to psyche myself up and tell
myself that the mothers need me to be strong.
In what country would you love to make the programme most?
How do you feel about being commissioned to produce Real Talk
Africa?
I’m so proud of this because Real Talk Africa reflects what the
modern Africa should be doing. It speaks about and educates on
what is happening in Africa and the world. I am happy to be part
of a revolution that can change Africa for the better!

Which notable people has OH Africa worked with in terms of
programmes?
Top Nollywood actresses Genevieve Nnaji, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde,
and successful TV personalities Anita Erskine and Michelle Attoh.
How does OH Africa interact with its viewers e.g. though
competitions, projects and schemes?
At the moment we get a lot of emails from viewers, and we have
plans to promote more competitions during this year.
What achievements are you proudest of?
I am proudest of self-educating myself, and the many things I
do now in the community. I am proud that I learnt from some of
the best people in television production. I am proud of the fact
that I have remained focused and determined with Pamper Your
These two shows are very different. How do you deal with that?
Pamper Your Mum deals with emotions; Real Talk Africa is all
about practical issues. Real Talk Africa educates the viewer. Yes,
there will be a different side to me.
Is it true that you are getting into acting?
Not true at all. I am a trained oral narrator and I have lent my
voice to the film industry. I studied theatre but I will not be
acting anytime soon. I’ll stick to what I know best!
