FALL 2012
Student
welcome
Student Life Centers
The Student Life and Leadership Development department is your starting
point for getting connected with student organizations, clubs, volunteerism,
and recreational events. Student Life also provides students with opportunities
to develop leadership skills through the “Leadership ‘n’ Life” series and gain
valuable experience in civic engagement through service learning, learning
communities and volunteerism activities. Additionally, many of the programs
cover topics and issues that may satisfy Communications or Humanities
assignments. Each campus features group study areas, comfortable furniture,
meeting rooms, television, and table games, and several feature table tennis and
billiards. They are also your starting point for getting involved on campus through
student government, activities and events, clubs and organizations, recreation
and intramurals! Do you have a talent? Opportunities exist in drama, Brain Bowl,
intramural and recreational tournaments, mathematics, music, photography
and student leadership, as well as a number of intercollegiate athletic teams.

Student Ambassadors
Florida State College Student Ambassadors assist the College in recruitment and retention
activities. Working through the Student Life offices at Downtown, Kent, North and South
Campuses and through the Student Success offices at the Deerwood, Nassau and
Administrative Offices, they provide both new and returning students with the information they
need to succeed. Ambassadors lead campus tours, are familiar with campus resources, assist
with orientation and registration, participate in campus activities/student government, and
assist in College marketing activities, among other activities. Tuition talent grants are available.
For more information about becoming a Student Ambassador, contact the Student Learning
Specialist/Student Ambassador advisor on your campus:

Effective March 1, 2013, Florida State College at Jacksonville
will be a tobacco and smoke free organization. Accordingly,
Florida State College will prohibit the use, distribution or sale of
all tobacco products in all indoor and exterior college-owned
property, all institution-sponsored off-campus events, and in
all campus-owned vehicles. College employees, students,
visitors, contractors, and all others are expected to comply with
this rule and the Florida Indoor Clean Air Act at all times. On
the last Monday of every month, we will mark the days left until
the tobacco ban takes effect. Smoking cessation resources
and information for students will be available on those dates

Get involved!
Clubs and Organizations
Get involved! Florida State College is home to a variety of intercollegiate social, academic, service
and occupational organizations. Each campus has its own special blend of clubs with several
reaching all campuses. Check the list, contact the appropriate advisor and find out how you can
get involved! Don’t see an organization you may be interested in? Start your own! Chartering an
organization can be as simple as obtaining a list of at least seven interested students and a faculty/
staff advisor. Student Life offers a “Starter Kit” to help you get your club up and running.

Music Series:
David
Campbell
David Campbell brings the same mixture of high
energy and familiarity to his acoustic shows as you’d
expect to find with a professional DJ. David says,
“I really enjoy taking a song that is on the radio and
making it my own. I’ll take something I hear off the
radio and reproduce it on the acoustic guitar even
though the song may not have acoustic guitar. It may
just be piano or bass or synthesizers.” Between his
growing list of original songs and each new single that
breaks the charts, there’s no shortage of hits to keep
any crowd happy or any venue packed.

“Hacking College”
Many college students have no idea how college “works” and
so even less of an idea how to make college work for them.
In steps Dr. Dean Kohrs, kicking off our Leadership ‘n’ Life
series with Hacking College. Hacking College addresses what
you need to master in college to thrive in a globalized world,
why you—as a student—are a start-up company, the easiest
route to the most valuable degrees, what to do when the
system fails you and how to prevent that from happening, and
more. Dr. Kohrs has a Ph.D in American Culture Studies from
Bowling Green State University. He has taught at community
colleges, liberal arts colleges and state research universities and
spends most of his days as a national speaker and consultant
addressing globalization, student and institutional success.

Is Ethical Leadership in Politics
Even Possible?
Javier
Mendoza
Singing in both English and Spanish, Javier Mendoza blends
his Spanish roots and his classic and modern rock influence
to deliver a unique trans-national sound that will reach your
soul and get you up and grooving. Javier has sold over 20,000
copies of his CDs independently and earned numerous
musical accolades. He was voted Best World and Pop band
in St. Louis 2000-04, a 2005 Budweiser True Music Artist
and nominated for Best Male Vocals at the 2006 International
Online Music Awards. Last year seven of his songs were
featured on MTV’s Real World. He has shared the stage with
musicians Ben Folds, The Roots, Los Lobos, G-Love, Willie
Nelson, and Blues Traveler as well as performing for Pope
John Paul II in 1999.
October 16, Noon, Downtown Campus Café; October 16,
6pm, Kent Campus G-Stage; and October 17, 11am, North
Campus Courtyard.
In every culture and in every time, humans ask the same
question over and over again: what the heck is wrong
with our politics? It is a question that has no easy answer.
Is it a problem with the process? Or are we just not
electing the right people? To answer this question we
must first understand what motivates our personal and
political ethics. Only then can we delve into the murky
waters of what truly motivates politicians to behave the
way they do. This presentation will provide a historical
perspective on the various ways ethical leadership
has been and continues to be defined so that we can
better understand how our personal perspective on ethical
leadership impacts how we view the political process and our own role as leaders. Speaker
Jennifer Hancock is considered one of the top writers and speakers in the Humanist world today.
Focusing on humanistic leadership, critical thinking, personal ethics and personal responsibility,
Jennifer’s “dynamic” and “captivating” presentations will leave you “a good deal better informed
and always inspired.” She brings a delightful sense of humor, creativity, and compassion along
with a no-nonsense approach to all of her presentations.

Performing Groups
Students with musical or dramatic talent might enjoy participating in one of Florida
State College’s performing groups. The Chorale, Jazz Ensemble and Symphonic
Band perform locally and throughout the Southeast, and the Jubilee Singers perform
gospel music for area events. Students from any campus may participate in the
many aspects of theatrical production as well. College-wide productions are full scale
and allow participation for actors and stage hands in a community theater setting.
Campus productions enable students to develop their talent through acting, directing,
stagecraft and costuming. Contact the appropriate person below for your particular
interest.

Campus Voice
The Campus Voice is Florida State College’s student newspaper…planned by students,
written by students, edited by students and designed by students.
How can you get involved? Write us a letter. Want to air your opinion? Send a letter to
the editor; maybe you’ll see it printed on the editorial page. Want to be more involved
than that? Volunteer to write an article, cover a game, take pictures, draw a cartoon, or
design a page. No experience is needed because we’ll help you over the rough spots.
All it takes is a word from you. Or better yet, compete for a job. The jobs range from
editor to office manager. For most of them you’ll need either a journalism course or
newspaper experience. The pay ranges from scholarships to weekly wages, and it’s
great experience!
Call the newsroom at (904) 633-8283 or drop by TCV newsroom at Downtown Campus,
Room C-103. Can’t make it by? Write the Campus Voice at 101 W. State Street,
Jacksonville, FL. 32202. Or see the newspaper online at campusvoiceonline.com or
e-mail [email protected].
Florida State College’s Student Government Association (SGA) is the official voice of the
student body and the connection between students, faculty and College administration.
Members sit on various College-wide committees, such as the student appeals committee,
the curriculum committee and campus presidents’ governance councils. SGA members
also have the opportunity to travel to district and state meetings, leadership retreats and
conferences, gaining leadership development and life skills. Represented on each campus,
SGA holds elections for vice president, senator and representatives during the fall term,
and for president and an additional senator and representatives during the spring term.
Tuition talent grants are often available for eligible students. Help make a difference on your
campus! Contact any campus SGA President listed below or your Student Life office for
more information.
