• HCHA Foundation • Auxiliary • Good Shepherd Hospice GOOD SHEPHERD HOSPICE MEMORIAL GARDEN 2012 Annual Community support Good Shepherd Hospice Memorial Garden, Hendricks Community Hospital Association T he creation of the Good Shepherd Hospice Memorial Garden began in 2010 as the result of generous donations from the community and some planning from Kathy Weber, Manager of Hospice, and Gwen Meyer, Hospice Volunteer Coordinator. The garden evolved from a hot enclosed cement area to a spiritual sanctuary of beauty and grandeur. The environment, colors, textures, fragrances, sounds of water, birds and insects, holiday lighting, flowers blooming, trees of shade, and vegetables to harvest truly make the space a garden of four seasons. It represents the cycle of life which is a symbolic theme within the hospice program. “ “ The incredible generosity of the community makes it possible to reward the hospice with a garden many people enjoy. - Gwen Meyer - Social Services The garden is enjoyed by nursing home residents, hospital patients, Villa tenants, hospice patients & families, visitors of all ages, employees and is also available for hosting events. The funds come from memorial donations, and fundraiser events such as the Tour of Tables and the Hospice Golf Tournament. Volunteers and donations are vital to the health, success and maintenence of the garden. If you or someone you know would like to volunteer time and gardening skills to the Good Shepheard Hospice Memorial Garden, please contact Kathy or Gwen at 507-275-3134. Lincoln Lane Villa Auxiliary Donation improves many dynamics You wouldn’t think replacing dining room furniture would be a necessity or have any impact on improving lives, but the purchase of new furniture at Lincoln Lane Villa has changed a lot of dynamics. “The new furniture is easy to care for, easy to clean and lighweight to easily move around.” says Lori Pederson, Lincoln Lane Villa Universal Worker. “These chairs have arms so I can get up and down now. The tables are smaller than the old ones so we are closer to each other now and can hear one another better. Also, we can reach better when we play cards. The new furniture is beautiful and much more comfortable. It’s really nice especially when I have company and family visiting,” says Pearl Bauman, Villa tenant. “I spend more time outside of my apartment now. I don’t like to eat by myself in my apartment and since the new furniture arrived, it is more comfortable in the dining room, so I don’t spend much time by myself anymore,” says Mavis Kirkvold, Villa tenant. The addition of community furniture at Lincoln Lane Villa was made possible by Auxiliary donations created by donated items and sales at This Ol’ Place Thrift Shoppe in downtown Hendricks, MN. The furniture is used for activities such as: • Meals & snacks • Auxiliary meetings • Crafts • Volunteer meetings • Cards & board games • Open house celebrations • Family time • Birthday parties • Painting • Holiday parties • Guest speakers • Coffee breaks • Manicures • Social gathering area Foundation Provides Tools of TECHNOLOGY Cutting edge technology is necessary and vital to providing quality healthcare to patients. The Foundation recently purchased a series of scopes: an Endoscope, Colonoscope, Gastroscope, and monitor equipment. “The new equipment has created a tremendous improvement in the quality of care during procedures for our patients and medical providers,” says Nancy Anderson, Surgery Manager and Outreach Clinic Coordinator. “The new equipment also creates more availability of services to our patients.” Doug & Bette Steffen William Towle Co-op Credit Union Canby, MN Karen Hogie Friends & Family of Karen Hogie Omer & Ileen Ness Russell & Linda Pitzl Kermit Kirkvold Tommy & Joan Krier Mavis Kirkvold Lanford Larson Joan Larson Leona Sumption Jane Baumgard Friends & Family of Leona Sumption Leone Fuller Jorstad Duane & Julie Hogie Linda Bower Inez Olsen Martin Sik Faye Wahl Vincent & Eloise Sik Robert & Bonnie Neff Mary Gillund Ronald & Beverly Gillund Merlaine Burlingame Donald & Sharon Vettrus Norma Johnson Duane & Julie Hogie Family & Friends of Norma Johnson Inez Olsen Vincent & Eloise Sik Pearl Dorn Marv & Eleanor Mangels Inez Olsen Tommy & Joan Krier Duane & Julie Hogie Omer & Ileen Ness Ronald & Beverly Gillund Gail Kvernmo Kenneth & Patty Buseth Thomas & Lori Pederson John & Nancy Popowski Richard Larson Dean, Manual & Wanda Ramlo Harold & Patricia Larson Robert Hoff Duane & Julie Hogie Rudy Hamer Duane & Julie Hogie Lynn Fryer Family Eldon Lovro Steven & Lorenchia Scott Avis & Kari Nornes & Julie Dorsey Kenneth & Patty Buseth Howard & Sonja Hanson Telena DeSchepper Nancy Sandro Hospice/Home Health Rudy Hamer Gerry & Laurie Pavek Carvell & Clara Johnson Charles & Rhonda Johnson Dr LeRoy Mueller Charles & Marjorie Lindgren Ronald & Beverly Gillund Lanford Larson Ronald & Beverly Gillund Eunice Oines Ronald & Beverly Gillund Friends Lost In 2012 Doug & Linda Buller Marjorie Lunde Nursing Home Betty Jensen Jay & Crystal Gislason Clarice Burns Brian Kirkvold Family Glen S. The event is scheduled for Saturday, April 20, 2013 at Christ Lutheran Church in Hendricks. All of the proceeds from ticket sales, raffles and the auctions go directly to support our hospice program for the care and benefit of hospice patients and their families. Good Shepherd Hospice serves a 30- Photo: Dian Gackstetter, Dawn Popowski, Kathy Weber, mile radius around Hendricks, MN. In Gwen Meyer, and Jessi Olson. 2012, Good Shepherd Hospice cared for 23 terminally ill patients in Minnesota and South Dakota and provided support to many of their extended family members. Services are provided wherever the patient resides, whether it is their own home, nursing home, or hospital setting. Without the caring and supportive contributions of persons like you, specialized equipment and resources would not always be possible. The Tour of Tables event is the primary source of annual donations and has been very successful over the eight-year span. The event continues to grow. Questions? When Dr. Mueller retired, he didn’t want a retirement party, so the HCHA Governing Board decided to create a scholarship fund in his honor, the Mueller Scholarship Fund. The scholarship was created to improve education opportunities for area students and employees who are pursuing educational goals in the health care industry. Hospice Golf Tournament In August 2012, family and friends of all ages, from Hendricks and surrounding communities, non-golfers, beginner golfers and veteran golfers gathered at the Hendricks Golf Course for a great Friday of golf for a great cause. Over $4500 in proceeds were raised and presented to the Good Shepherd Hospice. The overall golf tournament winner was Team Pitzl. Members include Russ & Linda Pitzl, son Jay Pitzl and granddaughter Emma Pitzl. A burger bar was also enjoyed by the crowd with proceeds amounting over $1200 which benefited the Hendricks Ambulance Service. Ambulance Service Receives Equipment Funds Hendricks Ambulance Service received emergency medical equipment because of donations from the Hospice Golf Tournament Burger Bar. Burger bar purchases from golfers and their families at the Hendricks Golf Club helped fund new emergency equipment which is very beneficial to the emergency medical patients. There have been new patients coming from as far as Canby and Brookings to have their mammography screening with HCHA’s new Philips MicroDose machine. “ “This, compared to the old mammography machine, is fast. The patient is exposed to 50% less radiation and the image quality is outstanding,” says Falon Murphy, Radiology Department Manager at HCHA. That was fast. I love the new room and comfortable environment. The new machine allows me to see my images right away. - Mammography Patient Telena DeSchepper Donald & Sharon Vettrus Tabb & Joan McCluskey Ronald & Beverly Gillund Gerry & Laurie Pavek Rusty & Barb Nelson Judy Ronning First Security Bank Kenneth & Lois Johnson Robert Trandem & Barbara Olson Bernice Citterman First Security Bank Rudy Hamer Robert Trandem & Barbara Olson Pearl Dorn First Security Bank Larry & Shirley Larson “ Foundation (cont’d...) Betty Buseth and Gloria Mueller influenced the HCHA Auxiliary to sponsor the business which has become a vital instrument in creating donation dollars for HCHA. The funds raised over the years total over $350,000 and are used for purchasing equipment at HCHA. Purchases such as: wheelchairs, a bell-call system, furniture, surgical equipment and a MicroDose Mammography system have made a huge impact in serving patients. The items purchased benefit the entire community.
