Bethesda would not be the state-of-the-art healthcare
provider you have come to know and expect. in fact,
philanthropy contributes as much as 50% to the Hospital’s
bottom line each year. gifts from donors have made many
of the services you rely upon possible.
nearly 3,400 gifts were made in 2013 – 2014. the
tradition of giving to your community hospital goes back
to the beginning more than 60 years ago when a group of
volunteers said they wanted a hospital in our community.
from that humble beginning have come thousands of gifts
over decades that have made Bethesda into a regional
leader in healthcare.

in 2010 the foundation embarked on the Caring for
Our Community Campaign with four strategic
initiatives and a goal of $60 million. We are proud to tell

We are proud to report that Bethesda has created new
Centers of excellence with the orthopaedic institute and
the Chest Pain Center.
our most recent Center of excellence is, of course,
Bethesda Hospital West. since its opening two years ago,
it has served the growing western communities.
medical education has taken a great leap forward with
the creation of the Bethesda College of Health sciences.
Bethesda is now one of the few hospitals in florida with a
College of Health sciences that is licensed by the florida
Commission for independent education. in may 2014 the
school graduated its first class of nurses.
We are also proud to announce the opening of our
Center for graduate medical education in June 2014.
Bethesda's commitment to being a comprehensive
teaching hospital will provide our community with
physicians in many specialties.
We have counted on you, and your support has made
us a world-class healthcare provider. through

Campaign
Centers of Excellence
• Bethesda Hospital West – in its first two years,
Bethesda Hospital West cared for more than 75,000
patients through admissions, emergency Department
visits and surgeries.
• Center for Women and Children – Both the maternity
and labor and Delivery unit have been renovated to
include a 10-bed obstetrics High-risk unit staffed 24/7
by an in-house Board Certified oB/gyn physician and
highly skilled nurses to provide the best outcomes.
• The Orthopaedic Institute opened in august 2010 and
has now earned the Joint Commission's gold seal of
approval for hip and knee replacement surgery. this
Center of excellence has become a destination for
those seeking the most advanced and effective
orthopaedic procedures.
• Chest Pain Center – the Chest Pain Center with PCi
(Percutaneous Coronary intervention) is accredited by
the society of Chest Pain Centers.
• Genetic Testing– Bethesda Women’s Health Center
is proud to offer a revolutionary new clinical genetic
testing program for inherited cancer risk called
myrisk™ Hereditary Cancer with myriad genetics
laboratory.
• Entovis ProMRI – the entovis Promri is a pacemaker
that allows the patient to undergo mri procedures
safely.
• 3D Mammography – Breast tomosynthesis – Bethesda
Women’s Health Center is one of the first women's
centers in florida and the first in Palm Beach County to
offer 3D mammography (Breast tomosynthesis) for
breast cancer screening.
Medical Education
• Bethesda College of Health Sciences - Nursing School
– the first class of nurses graduated from the College
of Health sciences in may 2014.
• Graduate Medical Education (gme) – Bethesda is
part of a consortium of Palm Beach County Hospitals
selected to partner with fau’s Charles e. schmidt

• Bethesda Hospital, through the support of the Bethesda

In Memoriam
We want to recognize and commemorate two notable
women for their generosity to Bethesda over many decades.
Gertrude “Trudy” Willms
Gertrude “Trudy” Willms began volunteering at Bethesda in
1976. for nearly 40 years, she was a dedicated and constant
part of our Bethesda family. she served two terms as auxiliary
President, 1985 - 1988; and again 2006 to 2008. she also
originated the Bethesda memorial fund, serving as the fund
President for many years.
During her time of service at Bethesda, trudy logged an
unprecedented 82,459 volunteer hours. she worked in
all different areas of the hospital and touched many lives with
her kindness, caring and welcoming smile. the Bethesda
Hospital foundation even began their annual Women of grace
luncheon in honor of trudy and her exemplary service to her
community.
the Bethesda family will truly miss trudy Willms as she is a
valued part of our hospital’s history. may her kind spirit
continue with us into the future.
Maxine Battjes
Maxine was born in Holland, michigan. she and her husband
Donald raised three sons in grand rapids where he had his
business. in their later years maxine and her husband had a
winter home in Boynton Beach. through her many activities,
friends and physicians, she became involved with Bethesda.
maxine and Don sr. gave a donation that created the Battjes
vascular institute at Bethesda. each year the Battjes vascular
institute sees approximately 6,000 patients.
maxine was a donor to Bethesda for many years. she
supported Bethesda Day at Quail ridge and the Bethesda
Ball. Her sons Don, Jr. and Doug always accompanied her to
the Ball.
maxine was a true friend and philanthropist to Bethsda.
Both of these wonderful women are a testament
to the human spirit and the kindness that resides in all of us.
We honor them and we thank them.

patients personally, and they know us. many past patients
are grateful for our personal approach, the caring manner
of our staff and the fine facilities. many would like to
honor a doctor, nurse or department who made a
difference, or memorialize a loved one, but don’t have the
funds now to make as significant a donation as they
would like. or, they simply want their will to be a final
statement reflecting their values.

and mary Blum Benefactors Pavilion featuring private
concierge viP patient rooms that combine world-class
medical care with the comforts of home and the
amenities of a five-star hotel.
upon hospitalization, Benefactors Pavilion society level
donors receive complimentary stays in one of the 11
Benefactors Pavilion suites of Bethesda Hospital east, one
of the four viP suites in Bethesda Hospital West, or a viP
room in the Heart, orthopedic or maternity areas as
appropriate. a special menu and food service are
provided.
most importantly for your health, you enjoy that extra
level of “tlC” with a nurse to patient ratio of one nurse
to three or four patients – and access to our Benefactor
concierge service to make your stay as comfortable as
possible. Benefactors receive expedited service in our
emergency room after appropriate triage due to their
preregistration.
Benefactors Pavilion society donors receive courtesies
beyond access to a viP suite. Benefactor level donors may
also receive assistance with physician referrals and
coordination of your care, access to wellness programs,
and complimentary flu shots in the fall. special codes in
the hospital computer records alert staff when a
Benefactor is admitted. lifetime members are issued a
gold iD card. reserved parking is available for donors
and family members visiting their loved ones in the
Benefactors Pavilion.

new era of medical excellence in Palm Beach County.
Bethesda Hospital east is proud to be a partner
of Florida Atlantic University’s (FAU) Charles E.
Schmidt College of Medicine Graduate Medical
Education (gme) Consortium, welcoming an inaugural
class of 36 internal medicine resident physicians.
as a not-for-profit community hospital, Bethesda
has established a long-standing tradition of advancing
medical education in our community. Programs for
nursing students, radiography technicians, third and
fourth-year medical students and podiatry residents
have paved the way for the gme program.
“Partnering with fau’s gme program was the next
logical step,” explained Bethesda Health President and
Ceo Roger L. Kirk, faCHe. “this milestone marks
the beginning of our journey to become the most
comprehensive teaching hospital in our area.”
The Need
With nearly 1 in 4 of Palm Beach County’s residents
being over the age of 65, the need for more physicians
in our area is growing. in addition, florida, a state
that boasts 6,200 medical school graduates annually,
only has 3,500 residency-training positions available for
new physicians. research shows that medical doctors
are most likely to stay and practice in the state where
they have completed their residency training. that
means that nearly 2,700 physicians are completing their
residency training, and thus establishing their practices,
in other states.
“if we are to meet the future healthcare needs of our
community, we must attract more quality physicians to
care for them,” continued Kirk.

The Vision
With 12,000 square feet of newly appointed space,
Bethesda has laid the foundation for a state-of-the-art
teaching tower.
By design, the gme program will grow to more
than 100 resident physicians in the specialties of internal
medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, general surgery and
emergency medicine. to accommodate these new
physicians, Bethesda is planning to build an academic
tower to house the program at Bethesda Hospital east.
the tower will include classrooms, an auditorium with
interactive conferencing capabilities, locker rooms, a
lounge and an outpatient internal medicine clinic.
residents will have acess to an amphitheater for grand
rounds and academic conferences, a high-tech medical
library and a surgical simulation lab. “inspired by the
humble beginnings of nationally recognized institutions
such as mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins and Cleveland Clinic,
we envision building a premier gme program to attract
the best medical talent in the country,” added Kirk.
The Community
as with other acclaimed teaching hospitals, community
support is vital. the Bethesda Hospital foundation has
launched a fundraising campaign dedicated to establishing
a premier gme program to attract prominent medical
leaders from around the nation and the globe.
“investing in the gme fund will help bring the
very best doctors, treatments and research to the
doorsteps of our families, our friends and our neighbors,”
said Bethesda Health Ceo/President, roger Kirk.
in addition to building an academic tower, the foundation
will fund endowments to attract and support skilled
academic department chairs and full-time faculty.
“strong physician leadership is key to establishing
a nationally recognized program,” explained Kay Harvey,
executive Director, Bethesda Hospital foundation.
“We are committed to raising the necessary funds to
build and support a prominent gme program from
the start.”

tHe magnolia soCiety was established in 2003 to
recognize 12 donors who fostered the spirit of
volunteerism by contributing $500 to help underwrite the
Women of grace (Wog) luncheon and to support the
Center for Women and Children at Bethesda Hospital
east. today, the magnolia society has reached over 140
members and is considered the largest contributor to the
Women of grace luncheon as the Platinum sponsor.
the funds raised through the magnolia society
membership have benefited projects within Bethesda’s
Center for Women and Children. the magnolia society is
responsible for the purchase of a transport incubator as
well as multiple “giraffe” incubators that are critical pieces
of equipment for a premature infant’s first days of life. the
group funded the renovation of the hospital’s maternity
department including patient rooms and the creation of an
obstetrics triage unit for the treatment of women with
high-risk pregnancies.
most recently, many of our magnolia society members
came together to support the Parent education Center of
the Center for Women & Children. Bethesda now has a
dedicated place to offer classes and support to new
parents. a dedication ceremony will take place for the
beautiful new space later this year.
