2010 Equity leadership awards luncheon NonTraditional Employment for Women A Promise Delivered Turner Construction Company is the nation’s leading builder. We have earned this position through the successful completion of large and complex projects, as well as highly finished tenant build-outs, in both new and existing structures over the past 108 years. We take great pride in the trust our clients place in selecting us as a partner to work diligently and creatively in finding the best possible solution for every project. Turner Construction Company 375 Hudson Street New York, NY 10014 www.turnerconstruction.com our Miss i on Nontraditional Employment for Women (NEW) prepares, trains, and places women in careers in the skilled construction, utility, and maintenance trades, helping women achieve economic independence and a secure future. At the same time, NEW provides a pipeline of qualified workers to the industries that build, move, power, green, and maintain New York. For more than 30 years, NEW has been a groundbreaking model that works for women and for New York City. About NEW NEW’s free training program gives women the skills and knowledge they need to begin careers as union tradeswomen in the construction, energy, transportation, and facilities management industries. NEW’s advocacy and support make a concrete difference. Women electricians, carpenters, laborers, and plumbers are working on construction projects throughout New York City. In the last few years, NEW has broadened its reach to other trades and introduced workshops that focus on expanding opportunities for and interest in more diverse trades. As a result, NEW graduates are working today as ironworkers, bridge painters, metal lathers, and operating engineers. What sets NEW apart from other job-training programs for women is its focus on and rigorous training for careers in the union trades, which offer good wages, excellent benefits, ongoing training, portable skills, and concrete opportunities to build a lifelong career and a secure future. Cassidy Turley applauds the exceptional work of Nontraditional Employment for Women and congratulates the 2010 Equity Leadership Honorees Goldman Sachs accepted by Timur Galen Pamela Liebman Terence M. O’Sullivan Marie Sullivan Nicky Heryet Principal Co Chair NEW New York, NY 10022 212.758.0800 cassidyturley.com M essage f r om Ou r B oard C hai r s Message from the Board Chairs Welcome to the 2010 Equity Leadership Awards Luncheon. We are so grateful that you have chosen to celebrate the women – and men – who are building New York City and acknowledge leaders in the construction and real estate industries who are helping to increase the number of tradeswomen in New York City. Nicola M. Heryet Board Chair We have had an amazing year thanks to you and so many others who have chosen to support NEW. With your generous support we recently opened a new training center in Brooklyn, which allows us to train even more women. This past January we launched a new green training program that will help tradeswomen be competitive in the growing green industry. We recognize that during these difficult economic times it is critical that NEW continues to provide training and employment opportunities for women. These opportunities are so meaningful to the hundreds of women NEW trains and places each year. Not only are we providing training and skills, but we are helping women achieve economic independence and a secure future for themselves and their families. We are thrilled to announce a new initiative that will ensure that tradeswomen have every opportunity to work on projects in New York City. At today’s luncheon, owners and construction managers will be the first to commit to NEW’s Signature Projects Program. Each Signature Project will commit to hiring tradeswomen and set a tradeswomen hours goal. We are looking forward to expanding this program with your support. Patricia J. Lancaster, FAIA Board Chair We are deeply honored that you have made an investment in NEW – through your time, efforts, and resources. Your support of NEW is an investment in the lives of tradeswomen in New York City and an investment in the changing skyline of New York City. Thank you for your continued support. Nicola M. In developing their new building in Battery Park City, Goldman Sachs made a steadfast commitment to engage a diverse supply chain and workforce. Following the lead set by Battery Park City Authority and New York State’s Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprise program, Goldman Sachs set out to ensure that a minimum of 25 percent of the work subcontracted for the base building be performed by New York State-certified minority- and women-owned business enterprises and that 25 percent of the workforce be women and minorities collectively. Similar goals were set for the construction of the interior of the building. On both fronts, the firm far exceeded its goals. In the course of its development, over $300 million in contracts were awarded to minority- and women-owned businesses and over one-third of all of the hours worked in the construction of the building were performed by women and minorities. These achievements make 200 West Street the most successful project in the history of New York State’s Minority and WomenOwned Business Enterprise program as recognized earlier this year by both the Governor and Hugh L. Carey Battery Park City Authority. Goldman Sachs has a long-standing commitment to supplier diversity. Throughout its businesses, the firm strives to provide diverse-owned businesses with the opportunity to compete on a fair and equal basis, and, ideally, to expand and grow their businesses. Beyond the construction of 200 West Street, Goldman Sachs employed these principles to engage a diverse supply chain and workforce by awarding 51 percent of the hospitality contract for the new building to a women-owned business and 77 percent of its janitorial services contract to a minority-owned business. 200 West Street opened in November 2009. Pamela Liebman Under her leadership the company has grown dramatically. In 2001, Ms. Liebman spearheaded the negotiations that resulted in the successful acquisition of The Corcoran Group by NRT, the nation’s largest real estate brokerage and a subsidiary of Realogy Corporation. Corcoran expanded its presence into key East Coast markets with the acquisitions of East Hampton, NY-based Cook Pony Farm and Paulette Koch Real Estate of Palm Beach in 2003. Further acquisitions - of McCann Coyner Clarke in Palm Beach, of Allmon Tiernan & Ely in Delray Beach, FL, of Dayton-Halstead and Allan Schneider Associates in the Hamptons, and of Citi-Habitats in New York City - transformed the company into one of the nation’s premier real estate firms. In addition, The Sunshine Group, the nation’s most important marketing agency for new luxury condominium projects, was added in to Corcoran in 2005 and cemented Corcoran’s position as New York City’s largest and most significant residential real estate entity. Ms. Liebman was born in New York City, and studied at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and the European Business School in London. She has lectured at New York University, the 92nd Street Y, and the Real Estate Board of New York (REBNY) and serves on numerous panels and committees, including REBNY’s Executive Committee and its Board of Governors. A nationally recognized market expert, she is frequently quoted as a real estate specialist by such leading news organizations as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, CNN, National Public Radio, and Bloomberg. In 2009, Crain’s named Pamela one of the 50 Most Powerful Women in New York. Ms. Liebman is a member of the Young President’s Organization, a founding board member of the Wipe Out Leukemia Forever Foundation - an institution that raises money to support pediatric leukemia research - and serves on the board of the USS Intrepid Foundation. For her various social contributions, she has been honored by such organizations as the Child Development Center of the Hamptons, Get Organized New York - The Fund for Public Schools, and the University of Massachusetts Alumni Association. She is married to Dr. Michael Krouse and is the mother of two young daughters. New York State Laborers LECET Congratulate this year’s Honorees Timur Galen Managing Director and Global Head of Corporate Services and Real Estate Pamela Leibman President and CEO, The Corcoran Group And our very own Terence M. O’Sullivan General President, Laborers International Union of North America for their support of Nontraditional Employment for Women 18 Corporate Woods Boulevard • Albany, New York 12211 800.797.5931 • 518.449.1715 • Fax: 518.449.1621 www.nysliuna.org ho n o ree t erence m . o ’ s u l l i van Terence M. O’Sullivan has been General President of LIUNA – the Laborers’ International Union of North America – since January 1, 2000. He is known as an innovator among the newest generation of labor leaders dedicated to aggressive and sometimes radical approaches designed to increase the power of working people in the 21st Century. Mr. O’Sullivan has guided the more than 500,000 collective bargaining members of LIUNA to the forefront of the labor movement, reshaping the Union into one of the fastest-growing, most aggressive and progressive unions in North America. Despite the decline in overall union membership in the U.S., LIUNA has shown steady and consistent growth. LIUNA members literally and figuratively build America with their work in construction, hazardous waste remediation, state and municipal government, the Postal Service, health care, maintenance and food service. Terence M. O’Sullivan Since taking office, Mr. O’Sullivan has restructured and refined the union’s goals, programs, and services. Under his leadership, the Union has adopted “organize or die” as its day-to-day motto, while at the same time increasing its commitment to member activism, capital strategies, grassroots politics, labor-management cooperation, apprenticeship, training and education. At LIUNA’s 2006 Convention, Mr. O’Sullivan led delegates to an historic commitment for helping more workers join the union with the passage of resolutions that will raise more than $100 million a year for organizing – more than any construction union and more than virtually any union in North America. He also led the charge for greater political strength with unprecedented commitments for voter registration, member activism and fundraising. Mr. O’Sullivan is widely known as a fiery speaker who motivates and inspires his audience to action at rallies, conventions, meetings and other events. Mr. O’Sullivan is a member of the Governing Board of Presidents of the Building and Construction Trades Department of the AFL-CIO and a member of the Leadership Council of the Change to Win labor union federation. Mr. O’Sullivan is a current member of the Board of Directors of Ullico Inc., and past Chairman and CEO of the insurance and financial services provider. He also serves on the Board of Directors of America’s Agenda: Health Care for All, and is a member of the Management Committee of Americans for Transportation Mobility. Before becoming LIUNA General President, Mr. O’Sullivan served the union as a Vice President, Mid-Atlantic Regional Manager, and Assistant to the General President. He has also served as Administrator of the West Virginia Laborers’ Training Center. A proud native of San Francisco, he joined LIUNA in 1974 and is a long-time member of Local Union 1353, Charleston, West Virginia. local 15 ho n o ree M ar ie su l l i van Marie Sullivan graduated from Nontraditional Employment for Women (NEW) in June 1999 and became an Operating Engineer with Local 15 in 2001. Prior to joining NEW’s program Ms. Sullivan attended St. John’s University on a basketball scholarship for two years before joining the Navy Reserves where she served for ten years. Ms. Sullivan operated forklifts and cranes while working with the Cargo handler unit in the Navy Reserves – her first experience with heavy machinery. Although Ms. Sullivan enjoyed this line of work, she held jobs that did not align with her long-term career goal which was to continue in a field related to the work she performed in the Reserves. Marie Sullivan After serving in the Navy Reserves, Ms. Sullivan worked part time at UPS where a friend told her about NEW. After only a few weeks in the program, she knew that she wanted to become an operating engineer. Ms. Sullivan met Alice Ronne at NEW who was then the Assistant Director of the Operating Engineers Local 15’s Apprenticeship Program and a NEW Board Member. Ms. Ronne would later become one of Ms. Sullivan’s most influential mentors. After graduating from NEW in June 1999 Ms. Sullivan worked at FedEx while waiting for an application to the apprenticeship program with Local 15. Early on, Ms. Sullivan told Ms. Ronne, “I’m getting into your school.” Ms. Sullivan called Ms. Ronne daily until her persistence paid off with an interview with the director of Local 15’s apprenticeship program. On the same day that Marie received word of this opportunity she also received a letter from UPS offering her full-time employment. Ms. Sullivan knew that she could not pass up this once in a lifetime opportunity to become an operating engineer with Local 15, so she chose to pursue the apprenticeship program. During her four year apprenticeship with Local 15, Ms. Sullivan worked on numerous projects throughout the city, including the Astoria Power Plant and East Side Access. She became a journeywoman in 2005. Ms. Sullivan is currently working at the JFK Airport runway with Tutor Perini. She has also helped build the West Side Highway, the BQE connector ramp, and the new Yankee Stadium. Marie was recently appointed as a Board Member of the Local 15 Apprenticeship Selection Board by James T. Callahan, Local 15’s President and Business Manager and General Vice President. Ms. Sullivan fondly recalls many of the things she learned at NEW including the tenet that “being early is being on time, and being on time is being late.” Ms. Sullivan continues to be an active supporter of NEW. Despite working a 10-hour day, Ms. Sullivan recently spoke with current Local 15 apprentice candidates. When thanked for taking time out of her busy schedule, she simply responded “No problem, I would not be where I am if it wasn’t for NEW”.
