Bangkok Chess Club (BCC) When IO Kai Tuorila settled in Thailand, there was nowhere to indulge his passion for chess – so he founded the Bangkok Chess Club, which used to meet weekly in a small pub owned by a fellow Finn. Over the years the club has grown and, with the organisation of the annual Bangkok Chess Club Open, has become well known to many around the world. This year’s tournament was the 13th International Open organised by the BCC team. He became (at the time) the chess coach and chess commentator. Short earned the youngest International Master in chess history, by Grandmaster title at the age of 19, and was ranked third scoring 8/15 in the Hastings Premier in 1979/80 and in the world by FIDE from January 1988 to July 1989. thus breaking Bobby Fischer’s record of 1958. The relaxed atmosphere of Roadhouse Barbecue proved to be an excellent choice for the final, with food and soft drinks provided for the finalists.
