US 131 Autocross #3
June 12, 2011
We finally get good weather for a US131 autocross! In the
past, we have had rain, snow, and tornado warnings! Not this
year! The weather was perfect. I was really surprised that we
didn‟t fill this event because the weather was so nice (maybe
we didn‟t fill because the weather was so nice). We had 77
cars with 4 runs each. And, again, the wireless lights were
superb. We setup „base camp‟ under the concession stand
roof and was able to get an excellent signal to the finish lights
back in the paddock area! Timing was an easy setup. The day
went off without a hitch!
I would like to thank the following for their efforts in making this event happen: Setup – Jeff Finkbiener,
Matthew Huizing; Tech – Brandon Blaga, Michael Overweg; Timing – Matthew Huizing, Brandon Blaga,
Tim Klinger; Cleanup: Jay Anderson (and Felix), Jake Bryant, Kris & Steve Swanson, Michael Voss; Official
chairman: Matthew Huizing. Special thanks to Jason and Stephanie Peterson for allowing us to use their
world class auto venue. We can‟t put on these great events without these venues! And thanks to Mike
Aumick for letting me take his insanely fast Subaru WRX/STI for a run around the course and spinning it in
the grass. I would have beat him had I had another shot.
Watch for more great events in August! MSU is open for registration, Metro Cruise is just about confirmed.
And in September, My Auto autocross on September 17, and March of Dimes Bikers for Babies autocross
registration is open at http://www.bikersforbabies.org. We still have a lot of fun left this summer!
See you at an event!!

The Hero Driver’s Journal – July 2011 5
GVSU Autocross Weekend, July 2 and 3
That‟s more like it! Our year in autocrossing is back on track! After we had to cancel ice racing, and had rain
on both days of the WMAA autocross, I was worried our whole year was going to be like that. US 131 had
good weather, but lower than expected entry. But for GVSU, the weather was nice (with only a slight chance
of rain), and the entry numbers were good.
On Friday night, for setup, we arrived to find construction fence in part of the lot we usually use. The fence
wasn‟t the problem, but the concrete barriers in front of the fence. We usually use the curbing and the grass
and trees as our buffer, but concrete barriers require a larger buffer. Our course would have been an out and
back with slaloms and would have been short. We looked around at some of the other lots and decided to use
the other H lot in the middle and connect it with the K lot on the south end. After a little talk with the GVSU
Public Safety on Saturday, we were good to go.
On Saturday, conditions were great with a slight chance of rain. It looked like it was going to rain a couple of
times, but nothing ever happened. To run between the two lots, we started in the north lot and finished in the
south lot. The north lot had a lot of broken areas, so the course was setup to run around all the broken areas.
The south lot was clean, except for a lone car in one corner. It was a quick course, with times averaging
around 40 seconds. We had 79 cars with 4 runs each. After the timed runs were over, we did some course
changes to be able to run the same course in reverse order.
On Sunday, there was no rain in the forecast. The course was lengthened because the one lone parked car had
moved and we needed to change some corners due to the rough north lot. We had 60 cars with 5 runs each.
The course averaged about 50 seconds. We had very few problems with the timing equipment all weekend.
The new lights have been excellent!
Thanks to those that put in the extra time to make this event great (Members denoted by „*‟). Setup: Matthew
Huizing*, Jeff Finkbiener*, Dave Vanderschaaf*, Dave Butler*, Pete & Debbie Hansen*, and Mark Wiser*;
Registration both days: Jason Porritt*, Tech both days: Steve Brouwer* and Michael Overweg*, Cleanup:
Brad Yonkers*, Justin Ryder, Steve Swanson*, Tony Brooker*, and others that I forgot (sorry); Chairman for
Saturday: Matthew Huizing*; Chairman for Sunday: Tony Brooker*. Special thanks to Captain Brandon
DeHaan and the Public Safety officers at Grand Valley State University for allowing us to use their campus
for our yearly event. We can‟t put on these great events without them. I have already discussed next year with
Captain DeHaan and we will be back, but in a different lot. Our regular lot will still be in use for
construction.
And the final word I have to say about this event is my heart goes out to those that had issues with their
vehicles at this event, Mike Aumick, Tony Brooker, and Dan Marcus. I‟m glad you all made it home and
hope to see you at another event. Special thanks to Steve Swanson for going out of his way to help Tony
trailer his vehicle home. Steve, next time you should leave us the keys to your car in case we have to move it
because of a tornado, tsunami, steam shovel, etc. And a special note about Brad Yonkers and Justin Ryder.
On the way home from the event, I passed these two helping a family on their way to Ft. Wayne. Their
camper had a flat on the side of the highway. Brad and Justin were able to get them on their way quickly with
a floor jack and impact wrench. They were even able to run home to put air in the camper spare tire. Great
job guys. When I see our competitors assisting like this, it just confirms to me that we have the best entrants
in autocrossing. Keep it up, guys!
There is still plenty of autocrossing this year. MSU and Metro Cruise (tentative) in August and, MAIC and
Bikers for Babies in September. And there is always a chance for US131 in November. Stay tuned for
information as it comes available.

12th Annual Graham Porter Karting Event
May 7, 2011
Once again, the call came out to
all of the Furrin Group members
and others to get together for a
good day of fun and competitive
driving and racing at the
Michiana Raceway Park kart
track in Liberty, IN. A group of
33 experienced, inexperienced,
enthusiastic and just plain
clueless folks showed up to
prove our prowess at the wheel
of the Honda powered karts.
The day turned out to be a combination of rain showers and sunshine. This made for a course that changed
by the minute and added an element of the unknown. Will the tires bite on the corner or will we go straight
into the grass?
The format of having qualifying sessions to get the lap times and then sorting teams by matching faster
drivers to slower drivers made for a very competitive set of 3 driver teams. This process makes it fun for all
and does not give an advantage to the experienced and/or “lighter” drivers.
After our 3 hours of karting, the group went to Benton Harbor and had an “all you can eat” Chinese buffet
meal. This was a great way to finish up and do some bench racing and share our experiences.
The team at the Michiana Raceway Park was very accommodating and did a wonderful job of working with
our group. They have been very professional and courteous and certainly give us motivation to come back
again.
I would like to give special recognition to Ric Del Rosario for leading the karting event again this year and
making it happen. He has gone above and beyond the norm to make this event successful and we need to
give him an extra pat on the back for his work.
Looking forward to 2012!
