OLD BUSINESS None NEW BUSINESS Blake Forslund is still signing up workers for the VSCDA event in August at Grattan, August 16, 17, 18. See him if you, family, friends are interested in working 1 or all the days. Also, there are still ice cream bars being passed around for dessert. ANNOUNCEMENTS There is a big Corvair event at US 131 this Friday, July 19. We are helping, see Curt if you are interested. Curt Van Duren defended his title at “Mad Dogs and Englishmen”. Respectfully submitted, Mary Ruzicka-Savage, Secretary The Hero Driver’s Journal – August 2013 3 GVSU Autocross Weekend July 5th to July 7th Bradley Yonkers setting the top ES time in a 1991 Mazda Miata Our yearly autocross weekend at Grand Valley State University has always been a great event. This year we almost doubled the fun! This year our weekend was part of an extended July 4th weekend. My first thought was that people have the 4th off from work and many have the 5th. I thought about doing something on all four days, but was highly suggested that I not do that. So I compromised and had setup Friday afternoon, Fun Runs Friday night, and regular events Saturday and Sunday. We are currently using Lot D at the Northeast corner of the Allendale campus. This area is closed for the summer and is also used by local law enforcement for training. Last year, our course was limited to one lot due to a large concrete barricaded area. This year, some of the barricade was removed to allow us to expand into an area that almost doubled our course space. Hopefully, the rest of the barricade will be removed next year to create a bigger course. We started setup Friday afternoon with a good size crew. For Friday night, free Fun Runs were offered to Furrin Group members only. We had about twenty members come out and get some practice. One member, Jack Heideman, brought his dad’s Mini Cooper with a brand new set of tires. We did not count how many runs were made, but Jack made more runs than anybody. I’m sure it was over twenty; Jack said forty. Anyway, by the end of the evening, Jack had destroyed two of the tires on the Mini. Jack and his dad had to go buy a couple of new tires Saturday morning before the event. On Saturday, we had 61 cars, each getting 5 runs. Runs averaged mid-50 second range. James Rose came up from Valparaiso, Indiana with his 1934 Ford Tudor Dwarf powered by a motorcycle engine. A car he setup specifically for autocrossing. By the end of his runs, his engine had a bearing problem. He said this is not the first time this engine had this problem and he would look for another type of engine to solve the problem. Jack Heideman, after all of his practice Friday night, beat his dad for the first time. The more you can practice at these events, the better you will become. Eric Anderson was FTD on Saturday with a 47.676 second run. This course included a tight u-turn that was removed for Sunday. On Sunday, with a slightly different course, most competitors were able to beat their times from Saturday. We had 60 cars, each getting 5 runs. The average run was a little less than Saturday due to the removal of the u-turn. Jack Heideman beat his dad, again! Carl Heideman better work on his game. At least one member mentioned how well Jack was learning the course. Carl also brought a Formula SAE car from Hope college with two drivers. This is a great program for young engineers and future race car drivers. Brandon and Bryan Redeker 4 The Hero Driver’s Journal – August 2013 brought out their latest toy car from Ford. The Redekers were chosen for their second Fiesta Movement and they get to play with a new Ford Fiesta ST for the summer, courtesy of Ford Motor Company. They have to take it to many different automotive events and have chosen our club to participate in autocrossing. I hope to see them again when we start rallycrossing. Since my Spitfire was having carburetion problems on Saturday, Eric Anderson let me co-drive his Toyota MR2 on Sunday. I had put in a few runs and still had a couple left to go. I decided to be done and I let Eric run one of my final runs. Thanks to Eric Anderson, I got FTD. I am really proud of myself. Maybe I should outsource my runs in the future. Thanks to the following people who made this a great event: Setup – Sam Rogers, Jack Heideman, Curt VanDuren, Dave & Kyra Butler, Tim & Harvey Nuttall, Deb, Lydia, & Pete Hansen, Nick Harnish, Dan Moody, Matthew Huizing; Timing: Brad Yonkers, Sam Rogers, Jason & Hannah Porritt, Mike Fuller, Carl Heideman, John Hudson, Tim Klinger; Grid Captain – Eric Anderson; Tech – Brad Yonkers, Kalean Henschke; Registration – Curt Rosenstengel, Tim Klinger; Teardown – Sam and Gavin Rogers, Derek Straub, Brandon & Bryan Redeker, Jack & Carl Heideman, James Rose. I know there were others and your help is much appreciated. Special thanks to Captain Brandon DeHaan and Officer Paul Weaver of GVSU Public Safety for allowing us to use their facility. And thanks to Jet’s Pizza for the delivery of lunch for our competitors. Hospitality will be a new position for someone to handle in 2013. Everybody likes not having to run out for lunch and they don’t have to remember to bring food. We generally do not allocate a lunch break. The concrete barricade should be removed by next year and we’ll be able to create a more awesome course! In the future, we are still planning a rallycross for the fall. I will also be looking at creating a Pro class for those competitors who want to run for best index time. We are already using an index class for our Vintage class, so it should not be difficult to create a Pro class. See you in September at Bikers for Babies on the 8th and My Auto Import Center on the 21st. The Hero Driver’s Journal – August 2013 9 Michiana BMWCCA Autocross at TireRack August 3, 2013 This was the third autocross event this year for the Michiana BMWCCA chapter. They have an autocross scheduled nearly every month during the summer—all of them at the Tire Rack test course in South Bend, Indiana. This was my first chance to participate in one of their events this year. My 1994 325i has been mainly sitting in the garage. I finally got the pair of new Kumho Ecsta Xses mounted and one of the new front control arm bushings installed the day before this event. I would still like to get wider wheels, but it nice to have a matching set again. I also checked the toe front and back with my framing squares and tape measure. There was nearly zero toe in front, but there was about a quarter inch toe out in the rear. To correct the latter I moved each of the rear trailing arm bushing pockets in about an eighth of an inch, but most likely the thrust angle is off now. I made it down to South Bend without any problems, though the on board computer indicated worse gas mileage (~26 mpg). I had averaged around 28 mpg on the South Carolina trip that wore out the Sumitomos. The Kumhos are a bit wider, taller, and stickier, which might explain some of the difference. They worked fantastic on the TireRack test course. Only 20 drivers showed up which made the event go quickly. Everyone received 5 runs in the morning and another 5 runs after the Subway catered lunch. Michiana BMWCCA uses a points based classing. The street tires keep my 325i classed in the C-class. Harvey Nuttall’s and Scott Limber’s M3s wind up in the faster B class on their street tires. The E36 M3 may be marginally faster than a 325/328 on a handling course. Scott is running-stock sized Hankook Vemtus R-S3s (225/45R17 and 245/40R17). Harvey has the new Dunlop Direzza ZII in the larger 245/40R17 size all around. I’ve been happy with the performance of the 225/50R16 Kumho Ecsta XSes. Harvey, Scott and I all had a few 50.0xx second times, but Scott pulled it together on his final run with a sub 50 second time. Nick Nardin and Kevin Gu were not far behind in Nick’s 205/50R15 Dunlop Star Spec shod 1987 325is. Steve Tamandli set the fastest time of the day in his tube frame orange Fiero. Michiana’s last event of the season is Saturday, September 21 st.
