BY SHANNON BURROWS BANNER STAFF With another successful CKNX Health Care Heroes Radiothon gone by, local businesses are still showing their support for Listowel Memorial Hospital. TD Canada Trust and The Kitchen Cupboard and Icebox both held fundraisers recently in conjunction with the annual health care fundraiser. TD presented a cheque to the hospital Thursday for $5,421. The money was raised through bake sales, a silent auction and a chili luncheon. “The money was raised in our community by fundraisers at the branch with our staff,” explained Rhonda Donegan, branch manager. Donegan said the branch holds a yearly fundraiser to benefit the community, and this year staff opted to support Listowel Memorial Hospital. “[Financial advisor] Andi [Ruttan] brought [the idea] to me, I said, ‘let’s run with it,’” said Donegan. “We felt it was important to the community, all our staff are from the community.” Donegan said all the money raised came from the Listowel branch, that no corporate dollars were involved. She said staff were moved by the support they received for their fundraisers. “It was overwhelming,” she said. “When people from the community came in and saw this was for the hospital, they brought in baked goods for the bake sale, items for the silent auction . . . the community is wonderful. The hospital really got behind us.” The Kitchen Cupboard and Icebox of Listowel held the third annual Supersandwich fundraiser to support the CKNX Health Care Heroes Radiothon and the local hospital. Owner Karen Haverkamp said the business annually supports the hospital with this event. “We know it goes to the local hospital, we know the importance of it,” she said. She and deli manager Marian Gadd presented a cheque for $1,400. As The Kitchen Cupboard sells a number of six-inch and foot-long sandwiches, the fundraising sales are “making a difference one foot at a time,” said Haverkamp. This year was particularly successful, as The Kitchen Cupboard was able to donate everything needed for the event, thanks to the help of its suppliers.
