HEALTHY KIDS. HEALTHY COMMUNITY. We’re Building for Their Future. MISSION MESA PEDIATRICS HEALTH CENTER - CAPITAL CAMPAIGN NCHS Mission Mesa Pediatrics Health Center The North County Health Services Mission Mesa Pediatrics Health Center has been serving low-income, uninsured and underserved populations in Oceanside for more than 20 years. However, it is limited to serve children in need due to a small, outdated facility. With a projected population increase, the demand for affordable healthcare services will be higher than ever. In an effort to meet the expectations of the community and projected growth, NCHS has made the expansion of the Mission Mesa Pediatrics Health Center a top priority. We need your help to ensure we can continue to help Oceanside families raise strong, healthy children, which will lead to a stronger, more prosperous community for all. Together, we’re building for their future! Not only has Oceanside experienced a population surge, but its residents are expected to increase by an additional 17 percent 1 by 2020. This population growth is combined with a high rate of poverty, as Oceanside has the second highest rate of homelessness in North County. There are currently 40,000 children living in Oceanside -- many living in poverty and with limited access to basic healthcare. Within the past year, North County Health Services was able to serve nearly 5,000 of these children at the Mission Mesa Pediatrics Health Center, but the demand continues to grow. This small but resourceful health center is working beyond capacity with an increasing number of children and families needing care each and every day. 1 SANDAG (September 13, 2012). Current Estimates. www.sandag.org for healthier futures D THE CAUSE THE CAUSE BUILDING FOR THEIR FUTURE The health of our children is one of the most important causes in our country. Healthy children have a significantly better chance of thriving emotionally, developing normally and succeeding in school. Without these essential building blocks, a child’s future is at risk. When we ensure basic healthcare for children, we strengthen our communities. When we take care of children, we make the world a better place. E THE IMPACT With your help, NCHS will expand its Mission Mesa Pediatrics Health Center from 3,024 sq. ft. to 12,639 sq. ft. The expansion of the current pediatric health center will have a substantial impact on the community of Oceanside. Presently, the health center is able to serve up to 5,000 pediatric patients. With this expansion, NCHS will be able to serve over 9,000 children with a wider span of services, nearly doubling the amount of children served in the community. NORTH COUNTY HEALTH SERVICES (NCHS) From common colds to complex pregnancies, North County Health Services has been here for the North County community for over 40 years. As a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) Federally Qualified Health Center, we provide quality, affordable healthcare to families through our 10 locations in San Marcos, Oceanside, Carlsbad, Encinitas and Ramona. This growth has been in direct response to health needs of the communities in northern San Diego County who have little or no access to quality care. Responding to the healthcare needs of low-income, underserved families continues to drive the mission of NCHS. Dr. Calhoun has been caring for pediatric patients at Mission Mesa Pediatrics for nearly 20 years. Not only has she seen her former patients children, she has now seen her patients grandchildren as they grow and thrive in the Oceanside community. The longevity of the staff at Mission Mesa Pediatrics speaks volumes to their commitment to removing barriers to care in Oceanside. Dr. Calhoun and Andrea Chavez, the Health Center Manager, have worked together at Mission Mesa for 18 years. The community of Oceanside trusts the Mission Mesa Pediatrics team like family -- because they are! Maricela Salas has worked as an RN at Mission Mesa Pediatrics for more than a decade. “There is such a demand for services in our area that we often work through lunch in order to see additional patients. Our waiting rooms are often overflowing. Additional space and services will change the lives of our kids and their families for years to come.” Those who experience barriers to care require a source of regular, continuous primary and preventative care - they need a medical home. “The medical home model is patient - and family - centered, coordinated, continuous, and proven to yield better health outcomes, remove barriers to needed care, minimize health disparities, and lower overall costs.”2 Mission Mesa Pediatrics is a testament to this model. 2 National Association of Community Health Centers.
