The parade featured lyre bands from the different barangays of Pulilan and several carabaos gracefully adorned with colorful paint and ornaments. The grant will also give the scholars the opportunity to intern at the Nestlé Experimental and Demonstration Farm (NEDF) in Tagum, Davao del Sur, where they will be trained by Nestlé’s team of agronomists. Christophe said he hopes the scholarship program will help generate interest in agriculture among the youth, especially coffee farming. According to Christophe, this is important because despite the importance of the agriculture industry in promoting inclusive growth and food security, the Philippines has seen a decline in the portion of the workforce taking part in agricultural jobs. “There is a huge opportunity for the Philippines to turn around the coffee industry and again be self-sufficient again. We want to be able to buy all our coffee beans here from our very own farmers, and to give jobs to as many people as possible, and to be dependent on our own coffee farmers,” 4 30 May 2013 shared Christophe. “This requires long-term planning and we need all the help we can get, especially from the youth who are the future scientists, managers, and leaders of the agriculture industry.” Nestlé, through its NESCAFÉ Plan, is aiming to increase its Philippinesourced coffee to 75% by the year 2020, from the current 30%. The Plan also entails training over 90,000 farmers and distribution of 25.2 million seedlings over the said period. “The NESCAFÉ Plan is a collaborative effort and we are working with various stakeholders in the coffee industry. We are very happy that we were able to cement this partnership with UPLB and we look forward to working with the younger stakeholders as well,” added Christophe. On the other hand, UPLB Chancellor Rex Victor Cruz acknowledged the assistance provided by Nestlé, noting how the “partnership with Nestlé will help us achieve our goal of increasing the level of recognition, stature, and competitiveness of UPLB among our Asian counterparts.” The recently published Nestlé Continuous Excellence (NCE) Communication Catalogue 2012, which was released globally, featured NBS Manila and its 2012 communication campaign promoting the Seven Elements of Compliance. The article recognized the team’s excellent campaign, which made use of a set of educational leaflets that served as reference documents and as Learning Circle materials. NBS Manila Head Craig Connolly was enthusiastic about the write-up, saying “I am thankful our efforts at making Compliance relevant are getting recognized. Truly, working and learning together make the challenges relatively small compared to the achievements of our team. This is NCE in action. Congratulations to all involved in this success!” Drawing from its NCE mindset of having One Team, NBS Manila produced the Compliance flyers as a cross-functional effort, with NCE and F&C teams giving their inputs to HR Communications in constructing materials that were both visually friendly and relevant. Flyers for each Compliance Element were designed creatively to effectively communicate the policy and guidelines as well as pragmatic ways to apply these elements to the employees’ functions and daily tasks. The need to come up with the campaign was identified following a series of Focused Group Discussions in 2012 where employees expressed that they found Compliance “too tedious and needed to be done separately from normal daily tasks.” This misperception prompted NBS Manila to come up with a campaign to make employees understand that Compliance is essential to the success of the NBS team. Two slogans were immediately launched to promote this mindset: “With Compliance, we make Nestlé credible” and “Compliance starts with ME”. Johanna is not new to the function as she had over 10 years of experience in Customer Service, Demand & Supply Planning, Systems and Logistics, and Factory Supply Chain. She goes back to SCM bringing with her this wealth of experience further honed and broadened by her successful stint in Co-Manufacturing. As Co-Manufacturing Head, Johanna provided crucial technical support in the growth of the multiple SAN AGUSTIN business units and the successful new product launches for 3CBU, Food, Beverages, NP, and DHNS. Under her leadership, compliance on quality, safety, and environment across co-manufacturers and licensees were strengthened, and goal alignment, operational master planning, and process improvements were put in place. These translated to improved results in Customer Service Level and Vendor Performance, reduction of DIZON working capital of RM/PM while maintaining freshness, and more than PhP 500 million in NCE savings. Val Dizon, formerly Factory Manager of Pulilan Factory, has assumed the role of Head of CoManufacturing effective May 16. He returned to the function he headed in 2004-2005, which has since evolved into a bigger and more complex operation. In OPEÑA his new role, he will continue to report to Technical Director David Findlay. Val left Pulilan Factory with a record of successes, which include building a strong One Pulilan Team, the transfer of the factory from Aurora to Pulilan, the successful NCE gate opening in 2012, and the start of the Lean Journey. He also strengthened the compliance culture in Pulilan, resulting in the Factory’s winning EMATA Safety and Quality Technical Awards in 2012, passing all compliance audits, and achieving a Satisfactory rating in the recent Nestlé Market Audit. Rico Opeña, formerly Plant Manager for Nestlé Nutrition in Cabuyao Factory, has assumed the role of Factory Manager for Pulilan replacing Val effective May 16. Rico now reports to Technical Director David Findlay. Rico started his career in 1997 as Technical Trainee and moved on to roles as QA Specialist and QA Supervisor before going on a mission assignment in Nutrition South Africa in 2007. He was Head of Quality Assurance in Cabuyao before taking on the role of Plant Head for Nestlé Nutrition. Under Rico’s leadership, the Nestlé Nutrition Plant’s performance improved significantly in the areas of master schedule attainment, line performance, and reduction of technical efficiency losses and energy usage. The plant consistently achieved Customer Service Level targets with a record-breaking CSL in 2012 for export products, and improvement in NGMP in the production area through the implementation of 5S and brilliance at the basics. Rico also led the team to pass NMA, NIMS, and SGS audits in 2011 and 2012 through the enforcement of a compliance culture. Replacing Rico as Plant Manager for Nestlé Nutrition effective May 1 is Mervin Emata, who returned to the Philippines after a stint as Plant Manager of Harrismith Factory in South Africa. He now reports to Cabuyao Factory Manager Ernie Zamora. Mervin joined the Company as Technical Trainee in 2002. He has since been assigned in Cabuyao in various roles in Production and Applications Group. The last position he held in Cabuyao prior to his expatriation was Applications Group Head for Infant Nutrition from 2007 to 2009. As Plant Manager for Harrismith, Mervin has been commended for his contributions to Goal Alignment and the roll-out of TPM, reduction of consumer complaints, and competency-building of operators.
