We would like to invite all of you to stop by the stores this month and discover how you can make your yard the yard of choice for the birds during these cold winter months. You have your favorite birds and birds have their favorite yards. Your yard can be the yard of choice for beautiful songbirds if you offer different foods in a variety of feeders. By varying food choices, feeder types, height above the ground and location, every bird will find the feeding station that is just right for them. Seed blends attract the greatest variety of birds. We formulate our blends specifically for the backyard birds in Northern Ohio. We suggest that you offer WBU Supreme Blend in a tube feeder, WBU Deluxe Blend in a hopper style feeder and our WBU WIldlife Blend or Select Blend in ground-level platform feeders. Our WBU No Mess formula (formerly known as Naturally Neat) can be used in most feeders, attracts just about every seed-eating bird, and because it has no shells, it leaves no mess on the ground below. This is a wonderful blend if you feed on a balcony or patio or just prefer to have no shells left behind. Our WBU Choice Plus Blend is designed to provide the high calorie fats and proteins that our birds need this time of year. This blend has seed, fruit, nuts and even the Bark Butter Bits that birds love. If you have favorite birds that you would like to attract, please let us know. We will help you design a custom feeding strategy that will help your yard be the yard of choice in your neighborhood. Stop by and see us during our winter bird food sale, and remember, as always, our free seed storage program is available to make feeding your birds even easier for you. February Seed Sale Is On Now! Stock Up Now! Seed Sale Begins On 1/28/14 & Ends On 2/28/14 Meeting Birds’ Winter Needs As the temperature dips, your birds’ needs change. With some thought and care, you can meet birds’ nutritional needs as well as attract some beautiful visitors. Food For winter, birds will change the kinds of foods they eat. Instead of insects and fruits (which are harder to find), birds eat more seeds and nuts. Often, the food birds eat in the day help build up fat reserves that are used through the night to keep warm. Attract Birds with Fatty Foods like Suet Offer suet products, Jim’s Birdacious Bark Butter, freeze dried meal worms, Bird Food Cylinders and blends with nuts to help birds maintain their high metabolic rate and stay warm. Feeder Location During harsh weather, birds favor feeders protected from the weather. Place your feeders near cover, such as evergreen bushes or trees, densely branched shrubs, brush piles or hollow logs, so birds can duck into it to get out of weather or escape from predators. You can even create a lower wind break to help your ground-feeding birds. Place Your Feeders Near Cover to Help Birds Water Helps Birds Maintain Their Feathers Water Birds need water to maintain their metabolism and their feathers for effective insulation. Besides helping birds properly digest food, water helps birds keep their feathers clean and in top condition. Research has shown that a chickadee with well-maintained feathers can sustain a 70° F (21° C) layer of insulation between the outside air and its skin. Use a heated bird bath or add a heater to your existing plastic, metal or stone bird bath. This will help make some water available even on the coldest day and attract birds that may not visit feeders very often. 20% Off Suet Cakes, Tubs, Bits & Cylinders Buy 11, Get One FREE! The Great Backyard Bird Count is an annual 4-day event that engages bird watchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-time snapshot of where the birds are. Why count birds? Scientists use the GBBC information, along with observations from other citizen-science projects, such as the Christmas Bird Count, Project FeederWatch, and eBird, to get the “big picture” about what is happening to bird populations. The longer this data is collected, the more meaningful it becomes in helping scientists investigate far-reaching questions, like these: *How will the weather influence bird populations? *Where are winter finches and other “irruptive” species that appear in large numbers during some years but not others? *How will the timing of birds migrations compare with past years? *How are bird diseases, such as West Nile virus, affecting birds in different regions? *What kinds of differences in bird diversity are apparent in cities versus a suburban, rural, and natural areas? Please join us for the 17th annual count! The 2014 GBBC will be February 14, through February 17. Please visit www.birdsource.org/gbbc for even more information on how YOU can get involved.
