GOVERNING THE FURNISHING OF TELEPHONE SERVICE
AND
IMPORTANT· SUGGESTIONS TO USERS
,.TERM PERIOD OF CONTRACT:
The Company's contracts covering the furnishing of telephone service are ordinarily for initial
term periods of one month. Under some special
conditions involving unusual installation costs or
involving the installation of special equipment, contracts may be required for •anger initial term
periods.
UNAUTHORIZED USE OF THE TELEPHONE:
'£he use of a subscriber's telephone is .limited
to the subscriber, his family or el11ployees ii} his
interest. Subscribers have no right to allow its
use by other parties. The telephone _may be removed· if this ·cnn -\ition of the contract is d1sregars1-
,
7
ed. Subscribers are requested tu refer those desi(ing the use of the telephone to t_he nearest PUB.LIC PAY STATION. The Subscriber assumes responsibility for all charges for local mes.sages ;3-nd
foreign messages sent from Subscribers,. stat10ns
and-for foreign• inessagcs received at slJch stations on which the charges are reversed with the
consent of the person called.
SERVIC.E CONNECTION CHARGES AND
CHAR GES F O R MOVES AND CHANGES:
A schedule of fixed charges is established cuverin g the c onnection of · a subscriber's station w ith
the exchange of the Company, and 'covering t h<,J
ch a r ges f or moves and changes. These s chedu les
of char ges are pub lished in det a il in t his direct or y .
USE O F EQUI PM E NT OR DE VICES NOT
FURNI S HED BY TH E COMPANY:
N o instrument , a pparat us, a p pliance or device of
a n y k in d not furnfshed by the Company in fur nis h ing serv ice, shall be attached to or m any manner
u sed i n conn ection with the equipment and !mes
of the Compan y; if any instru ment, apparatus, ap .Pliance or device of any kin d other than that fur nished by the Company is attached to or connect ed with any part of-the Company' s said property, the Company shall have th.e right to r~move
said instrument, apparatus. appliance or device or
suspend or discontinue service and cancel the sµbscriber's · contnact, without any claim on the part
d subscriber.
MUTUAL INTEREST IN SE,f!VICE_:_'J:'he Company and its subscribers are mutually rnterested
in everything that will assist in bringing the telephone service to the· highest possible standard of
efficiency. One of the important m'eans of raising
the Standard is a better and greater knowledge on
the part of the subscribers and patrons of the best
metliod of procedure in ...using the service.
LOOK IN THE DIRECTORY FOR THE NUMBER of the person to whom you wish to talk, and
signal the operator in the usual way. Keep only
the latest issue of the directory.'
Always call by number, not by name.
WHEN THE OPERATOR REPLIES by saying
"Number please?" give your order slowly . and dis. tinctly giving the name of the Central Office and~
pronou'ncing the number by digits. For example :
"Hemlock one-two-three-four J." This will avert
mis.understandings.
WHEN T HE OPERATOR RE P EATS be sure she
has received the order correctly. If the desir ed
line is in use the operator will report, "The Line
is Busy."
IF THE PERSON YOU ARE CALLING FAI L S
TO ANSWER within a reasonable time, or if you
wish to attract the operator's attention at any time
during a connection, move the hook up and down
SLOWLY three or four times or turn the crank.
DO . NOT MOVE THE HOOK RAPIDLY, as a
rapid movement does not give any signal.
EMPLOYES NOT ALLOWED TO TRANSMIT
MESSAGES FOR PATRONS:
Employes 'o f the Company are forb idden to accept either oral or written telephone messages to
be tta.nsmitted by an employ<' of tbe Company over
the lines of the. Company.
TELEGR~MS
BY TELEPHONE:
Telegrams may be transmitted to and received
from telegraph offices by telephone. '.ro send a'
telegraph or cablegram, 'call by ,.name the teleg1·aph company desired. By arrangement with the
'\Vestern Union Telegraph Company any telephone
subscriber may have charges for messages received
or sent by '\Yestern Union Telegraph Company
charged to his telephone and coliected with his·
telephone bill.
DIRECTORY LISTINGS,OR 6MISS\ONS:
It is essential to good service that the 1name~
and numbers of subscribers be eorrectly litted in
the directory,, Errors or omissi0ns should b'e
promptly reported to the manager. The street
numbers and character of business of subscribers
are not essential to the operation of the Company's
business, all such data now included in the Company'.s directories are printed solely for the convenience of the subscribers, and the Company does
not guarantee the accur acy of the same, and assumes no liability for any error or any consequence
thereof.
•
CH ANGE IN CALL NU MBE R S:
T he C~mpany r eserves the right to ch a n ge a
numb er assign e d t o a subscriber's sta tion or t r un k
line as the needs ~ its b u siness may r equire . S u bscrib ers s h ould b ear thi s in mind wh e n h a v in g s ta ti onery printe d and it is urged that the w ords " B ell
Telephone" be employed instead of the 'telephone
number.
U NINT E RRUPT ED S ERV ICE NOT GUARA N- '•
TE E D :
T he Company' s obligation to fu r n ish t etephone
service is dependent u p on its ability t o secur e and
retain suitable facilities and rights for the con struction and maintenance of the necessary c ir - cuits . If the service is interrupted otherwise ,t han
by t he negligence or wilful act of the subscriber,
an allowance at the minimum monthly ra.te for the
telephone facilities and class of service in effect at
the time of the interruption shall be made for -the
time such interruption continues after notice and
demand in writing to the Com.pany.
If objection in writing be not received by the
Company within thirty days after a statement of
account is repdered, such statement shall be
deemed to be correct and binding upon the subscriber.
ANSWER YOUR TELEPHON~ PROMPTL~
otherwise the calling party may tire of waiting

the •rece1ver on the hook, as this will give the
oper ator the disconnect signal.
WHE N Y OUR TELEPHONE BEL L RINGS .do

bell stops r inging . . This is particu larly important
if you 'are on a dup lex or party line.
