(SILT) is a non-profit registered charity
with over 330 members. Our goal
is the preservation of wilderness,
wildlife habitat, clean water, and
access to greenspace. Through generous
donations, SILT has acquired over
14 acres for preservation.

Save The Savary Dunes (District Lot 1375)
SILT was established in 1997 in an effort to preserve this
last undivided and undeveloped wilderness on Savary.
DL 1375, a 133 hectare parcel in the center of the Island,
is one of the best examples of intact coastal dune ecology
in Canada. SILT became involved because the land was
under threat of subdivision and development as a 90 unit
gated community by American developers.
SILT has worked hard with private donors, both
levels of government, and the Nature Trust of B.C. toward
preserving this national treasure. Through these efforts,
the Nature Trust of B.C. was able to purchase a 50%
undivided interest in DL 1375 in 2002. It tried to purchase
the remaining 50%, but recent Court decisions have
partitioned the property, and the land is again under threat
of subdivision and development.
Most coastal dune ecosystems are only a few hectares;
however this parcel has 65 hectares of intact coastal and
island dunes—in fact 70% of Savary’s unique dunes are
on DL 1375. Visit www.silts.ca to learn more about how

Save the Trails
We are also seeking to protect the important trail system
that wends through the forested dunes on DL 1375. These
trails have guided generations to quiet beaches, ancient
forests and wild lands, rare meadows and some of the
region’s last Old Growth Forests.
The Preliminary Layout Approval for the subdivision
of the Savary dunes dedicates and protects only 5 of the
16 trails currently in use. The Powell River Regional
District can require that additional trails be dedicated
for protection as part of the development process. Speak

avary Island’s legendary warm water and sandy beaches make it a popular
holiday destination. Apart from an ancient granite outcrop at Green’s Point,
Savary
Island
Savary is a narrow sliver of glacial sediment, essentially a migrating sandbar.
Savary is home to 10,000 year old sand dunes and is the best example of a coastal dune
ecosystem in Western Canada. Sandy Savary is very fragile. The island is eroding at an
average rate of .41 meters per year on the south side and .025 meters per year on the
north side. The Island, cliffs and dunes are highly sensitive to
disturbance. Please keep all wheeled vehicles off trails.
Though only 7.5 km long and 0.3 km to 1.0 km wide,
Savary is subdivided into over 1750 small lots, giving it

Forested sand dune topography. These uncommon
coastal dune ecosystems represent the best example
of their kind in Canada. Endangered plants and plant
communities live here. The dunes are sensitive to surface
disturbance and erosion. Stay on paths and do not use
wheeled vehicles.

Emergency Bring a first aid kit. Island volunteers run an efficient

Water There is no public source of drinking water on Savary
Fishing Harvesting of any fish or shellfish requires a license.

the island. Water is very precious. Help us to nurture this essential

Wharf The public wharf is for pick up and drop off use only. No
