MARCH-2015-National
President’s Message As I write this at the end of January, I am pleased that I am ahead of schedule. I have most of the Christmas things down and only have the two Christmas trees to de-ornament and put away and we are done for another year. I plan to have it all done by the first week or two of February. I wonder how many of you have the same problem? There is so much Coca-Cola Christmas themed items that I have to pick a selection of them for the year and go from there. I suggested to Rory that we could take the roof off and put on a third story for the Coke stuff, but the reception was lukewarm to say the least. You may realize that the Super Bowl was held a stone’s throw from the Reissuance Hotel in Glendale, AZ, our convention hotel this summer. You will be pleased to know that the rate we are paying is less than $100 per night. The standard room at the hotel during Super Bowl weekend was around $900. You can stay the week for less than what was paid for one night! Hotel reservations are pouring in and we are now about 70% of our contracted minimum. There are plenty of rooms available now. I know that there is always some problems with people making reservations and I want everyone to know that most of these problems are easily solvable.. All of our hotel contracts have a provision that allows members to get the same rate before and after the convention. This can vary from 3 to 5 days depending on the hotel. Unfortunately, hotels use a central reservation service and the terms of our contract are not always available to the off site reservation site. If you are not given the hotel rate, or you are told that the hotel is sold out at our rate on a particular night, please let a board member know. Usually it is just a simple phone call and we can get you the room and rate we contracted for. Occasionally we are notified of these glitches when it is too late for us to correct them. We want you to attend and enjoy the festivities, so we are standing by to make the reservations as smooth as possible. The Grand Canyon tour appears to be very popular. We have already filled one bus and are well on our way to filling a second one. If you have never seen this natural phenomenon, you should consider making this tour. Please note that there will be NO refunds for those that have signed up for this tour, regardless of circumstances. If you purchase the tour and are unable to participate, you will need to find a replacement. We are gearing up for our biannual elections. The club needs a dedicated board that has the best interest of the membership at heart. The jobs are time consuming but the work is also rewarding. Please look at the job descriptions and if you have the time and expertise, please consider running. If you are even a little internet savvy, you may notice the current Coca-Cola promotion #MakeItHappy. The program is there to remind us to be civil and polite with our internet posts. I have seen some of the #MakeItHappy postings on Facebook and it looks like the program is going to take some time to turn things around. I am surprised at some of the uncivil responses. The program is an attempt to reduce cyber bullying. While TCCCC has held one convention in Scottsdale, AZ in 1992 this will be our first visit to Phoenix. Phoenix is the capital of Arizona as well as the largest city in Arizona and the largest state capital and the sixth largest city in the country and the 13th largest metropolitan area. It is halfway between Tucson and Flagstaff. Phoenix was founded in 1867 where the Salt and Gila Rivers meet and became a city in 1881. The area is often called the Valley of the Sun and is a part of the Salt River Valley. It is situated in the northeastern section of the Sonoran Desert. The city has a subtropical desert climate. Phoenix was the original home of the Hohokam tribe for over 2,000 years. These people created the basic irrigation canals that are still used in Phoenix today. These tribes abandoned the area in the 1300 – 1450 time period due to a series of severe droughts followed by severe floods. The land became part of Mexico and Mexico sold the land to the United States at the end of the MexicanAmerican War in 1848. At the time the land was a part of the New Mexico territory. Arizona became a separate territory in 1863 and became the 48th state and the last of the contiguous states in 1912. Phoenix and the surrounding area was built on the “five Cs” Cotton, Cattle, Citrus, Climate and Copper. Alfalfa and hay were also big crops in the region. The growth of Phoenix and the metropolitan area exploded after World War II for two main reasons. Soldiers who trained in the area and after the war brought their families back to the area to settle, and the invention and popularization of air conditioning. Companies like Motorola, INTEL and McDonnell Douglas built plants in Phoenix in the 1950’s which also spurred the growth of the area. Most people assume that Arizona has a warm desert climate. That is true for the Phoenix area which sits in a desert. The summers are hot and the winters are mild. However, the state is large and has many ecosystems. The northern third of the state has four seasons and ice and snow in the winter. The Grand Canyon which is a 4ish hour drive from Phoenix will have more pleasant temperatures around the south rim of highs in the low 80s during the day and lows in the 60s or 50s at night. Next month we will explore things to do in Phoenix and the surrounding areas. The Coca-Cola Collectors News March 2015 page 7 at the Great Get Together in Las Vegas. The 37th convention of the GGT was celebrated with 143 people receiving a T-shirt celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Coca-Cola bottle. The Ladies of Coke Thank you, Rocky Mt. Chapter. The Silent Auction was the first event in a packed weekend of great events. Run by Pacific Northwest and Desert Chapters. Takao from Japan selling at the swapmeet. The next event was the Pizza and Salad Bar Lunch run by the San Diego Chapter. The centerpieces were signs of Coca-Cola and the gift was a choice of canvas bags. The chapters competed in a Jeopardy type game. Questions were given by Sally Vandivort and Bob Porter. Jim Maley was scorekeeper. Dan Deane speaker. Banquet gift was a barbeque set or an umbrella. Centerpiece was designed and made by Desert Chapter. The Regular auction was run by the Orange County Chapter. Bob Palmer was the auctioneer. A few new rules made many happy. Buffet breakfast was the ending event with placemat, glass and Coca-Cola Ambassador pin. The sign was the centerpiece. See you in 2016 at the Radisson Airport Hotel, Ontario, CA. Feb. 11-14, 2016. Sally Vandivort, Secretary page 8 March 2015 www.cocacolaclub.org Hilda Clark & Lillian Nordica: Celebrity Endorsements in the Early Years Written by: Beth Markowitz Examples of celebrity endorse- ments for products date back at least to the mid-1700s (and probably earlier than that). Josiah Wedgwood, the father of the pottery brand that bears his name, claimed endorsements from royalty, including Queen Charlotte and Catherine the Great of Russia as early as the 1760s. Around that same time, nobility and heads of state were using their own cachet to market food. Marie Antoinette wore potato blossoms in her hair and Louis XVI wore the blossoms in his buttonhole in order to promote the growth and use of potatoes. By the mid-1800’s the focus of celebrity endorsements shifted from nobility to celebrities. Howard Staunton, regarded as the world’s strongest chess player at the time, endorsed what soon became the standard form for chess pieces for the Jaques of London company and George Leybourne, a famous entertainer of the time, became the celebrity face of champagne in 1866. The champagne maker Moet even commissioned Ley- The Coca-Cola Collectors News bourne to write and perform songs extolling the virtue of champagne. He also agreed to drink nothing but champagne in public. Another important vehicle for celebrity endorsements - the trade card - was in heavy use by the 1800s. It was common to include cards featuring a prominent celebrity, either along with the product or inserted in the packaging itself. Typically the card had a picture of the celebrity and a product description, but no quote or direct testimonial by the celebrity. Among those featured on trade cards at the time were actresses like Lily Langtry and Sarah Bernhardt or baseball players such as Cy Young and Ty Cobb. Even the author Mark Twain endorsed two brands of cigars and a brand of flour. In a similar way, The Coca-Cola Company utilized celebrities in some of its earliest advertising calling on two celebrated singers to endorse their product at the turn of the century: Hilda Clark and Lillian Nordica. Today, these women are not as well known as some of their contemporaries from stage and screen and perhaps are best remembered for their likeness on Coca-Cola memorabilia rather than their on-stage prowess. March 2015 page 9 ~ Hilda Clark ~ Hilda Clark was born in Leavenworth, Kansas in the early 1870’s. The Salt Lake City newspaper, Deseret Evening News, in an October 5, 1901 article described her as a “charming society belle dancing and singing her way into the hearts of army officers” stationed at Leavenworth. The article went on to describe her as “young and beautiful; uncommon tall, with masses of curls that looked like spun gold when the rays of the sun struck them.” After the death of her father, the family moved to Boston. With the encouragement of friends, she went to Europe for two years to further her musical studies. On return, she became the soprano for St. Mark’s Church in New York City. It was there that the composer of The Princess Bonnie, Willard Spenser heard her sing. She made her debut in the title role of the musical The Princess Bonnie, in 1895. Following the show’s run, she joined “The Bostonians”, a light opera company, in September 1895 for a season. She had a number of other roles before appearing in the prima donna role of John Philip Sousa’s opera The Bride Elect, her best known role. She also page 10 frequently appeared in theaters throughout the East Coast where she was billed as a light opera singer. Hilda Clark was never known as a gifted actress. Her voice was her ticket to stardom. Lewis Clinton Strang, in his book Famous Prima Donnas, published in 1900, described her, saying “The divine gift of song has placed Hilda Clark, whose ability as an actress is by no means great, in a position of prominence in the theatrical world.” He notes that there will always be a demand for attractive young women with pleasing singing voices thus granting her a measure of success. He goes on to describe her as having “the added charm of more than ordinary physical attractiveness. She is a blonde of March 2015 www.cocacolaclub.org opinion of Lewis Clinton Strang, she won over many during her brief period on stage. The Deseret Evening News article, which is called “Hilda’ Clark’s Romance” notes that she had captured the heart of the young wall street king, Frederick Flower and the article suggested rumors of an engagement. She and Flower were married in 1903 at which time she retired from the stage. She made her final appearance as a celebrity endorser for Coca-Cola in 1904. She died in Miami Florida in 1932. prettily irregular features. Her personality is winning rather than compelling, and her stage presence is good, though there are times when this would have been improved by more bodily grace and freedom.” It is clear that Mr. Strang does not think Hilda Clark belongs in the same realm as the other twenty one women he profiles. Not only is she that last prima donna profiled, she also only warrants five pages of text while most of the others receive two to three times that. Hilda Clark has the distinction of being the first of many celebrity endorsers for Coca-Cola. Clark’s image first appeared in Coca-Cola advertising in 1899 and was utilized on a wide variety of advertising vehicles including trays, tin and cardboard signs, bookmarks, trade cards, menus, clocks, coupons and tin and cardboard signs. Regardless of the The Coca-Cola Collectors News March 2015 page 11 ~ Lillian Nordica ~ The town of Farmington in the Rangeley region of Maine has one enduring claim to fame. Here on December 12, 1857, was born Lilly Norton, destined to become one of the greatest dramatic sopranos the world has ever known. An Italian maestro at the beginning of her operatic career selected the stage name “Nordica” claiming European operagoers would not embrace a diva with such a plain, American name. As Madame Lillian Nordica she made her debut in La Traviata at Brescia, Italy, April, 1879. page 12 Following her studies at the New England Conserva- tory during the 1870’s under John O’Neill, she went to Europe for her 1878 début. This was the beginning of an illustrious career heaped with honor. She was the first singer to be heard in the new Trocadero in Paris; the first American woman invited to sing at the famous Bayreuth Festival in Germany; the world’s greatest Wagnerian artist; and brilliant member of one of the Metropolitan Opera’s greatest companies. As one of the foremost dramatic sopranos of her day her powerful, yet flexible, voice mastered a wide variety of roles in the German, French and Italian operatic repertoires. At the time of her death which March 2015 www.cocacolaclub.org occurred at Batavia, on the island of Java, May 10, 1914, Nordica’s fame had penetrated into every corner of the world. As illustrious was her career, so was her death. She was shipwrecked in the Torres Strait and spent her final months in a hospital on Thursday Island before sailing for Batavia. There, she died of pneumonia. In 1927 the Nordica Memorial Association was organized to purchase and restore the Norton homestead and to perpetuate the memory of Maine’s most famous daughter. Today, it houses The Nordica Homestead Museum. The building, a typical Maine farmhouse, was built by her grandfather. The front entry is everyday 1857 New England, but look beyond and the real world vanishes and the fanciful world of the stage comes to life. Here against the background of the Norton home are displayed the gorgeous gowns of Nordica’s great roles. Also on display are the glittering jewels which once enhanced her statuesque beauty. Many portraits of her can be found throughout the town, including a reproduction of the portrait done by The Coca-Cola Collectors News The Coca-Cola Company. In the portrait used by Coca-Cola, Madame Nordica stands with one arm resting on a tall, beautifully carved pedestal. On the pedestal stands the early straight-sided bottle. The words above tell the whole story: “Drink Coca-Cola in bottles—5 ¢.” The Coca-Cola Company used this image on a number of items including calendars, magazine ads, coupons, menus, bookmarks, trays and a variety of signs. Lillian Nordica appeared in Coca-Cola advertising starting in 1904 and was featured in the first full-color magazine ad in 1905. This two-sided ad contained a coupon for a free glass of Coca-Cola and appeared in at least ten major magazines in 1905 including Munsey’s, Leslie’s Weekly, Good Housekeeping, and Review of Reviews. Almost $43,000 worth of Coca-Cola was served during 1905 alone from the use of the coupons. The use of these two popular beauties set the stage for The Coca-Cola Company’s continued use of celebrities in advertising. March 2015 \ page 13 The Club Needs Your Help!! It is time once again for the most important business process our Club performs every two years – election of officers for the 2015 – 2017 term. As Election Committee Chairperson, I wanted to reach out to our membership with hopes many of you would commit to doing your part as an involved, informed and active member and step forward to run for the Board. We have nine positions to be filled, as you will read about in this month’s newsletter and we can never have too many candidates. The skill set varies by position, yet the most important needs are members that will commit to their position, have the Club’s best interest in the decision making process and keep the membership informed. Won’t you consider running? In order to keep our Club healthy and growing for years to come, it takes members that can be “leaders”, have fresh ideas and a passion for the Club to get involved when this election process rolls around. Please feel free to call or email me if you have questions about the workload, business process or anything else regarding serving on the Board. Even if you choose not to run, urge fellow members to consider the positions, discuss at your chapter meetings who might could help out the Club or send suggestions to me for follow up.
