Cost structure. For truck operation we make a distinction between vehicle-related costs such as acquisition, fuel consumption, maintenance and repair and operating
costs such as road tolls or taxes. In addition, personnel and administration costs are incurred. We are able to influence most of these cost types. On the following pages
we will focus on the vehicle-related costs which we as a manufacturer are best able to influence.

Our tip for low fuel consumption costs:
Top technology, top services and a top driving style.
In the Actros and the Antos you have two model series at your disposal which use fuel more efficiently than ever before.
Substantial additional fuel savings are possible through the combination of vehicle technology and services such as our
driver training. An accomplished driver can make a good truck even better.
Vehicle technology and services. Fuel expenses are one
of the biggest cost factors. Innovative technology can cut
fuel costs substantially. The Actros complying with Euro VI
enables a reduction of up to 5% in diesel and up to 40% in
AdBlue® consumption, for example, in comparison to its
predecessor to Euro V standard. And the Predictive Powertrain
Control (PPC)1) assistance system provides for further fuel
savings of up to 5%. Beyond this, FleetBoard performance
analysis3), FleetBoard EcoSupport2), driver training such as
Mercedes-Benz EcoTraining 3) and the MercedesServiceCard
contribute to further reductions in consumption.
Consumption-reducing technology. Thanks to common
rail high-pressure injection, the economical Euro VI engines
play a key role in reducing fuel consumption right from the
start. Optimised auxiliary consumers equally help to save
diesel. The Mercedes PowerShift 3 automated gearshift
also contributes to low fuel consumption – with precise gear
shifting, short shift times and fuel-saving driving programmes.
Job-matched transmissions and finely graduated rear-axle
ratios also play their part in ensuring good fuel efficiency.
Sophisticated aerodynamics also help to keep fuel consump6

tion low. For further fuel savings, extra-wide tyres3) and the
tyre pressure monitoring system3) can be deployed to reduce
rolling resistance.
FleetBoard Performance Analysis. FleetBoard Performance
Analysis3) contributes to a driving style which is conducive
to reducing fuel consumption and wear. To this end, the telematics system records and analyses technical data from the
truck. The driver’s style of driving is assessed on the basis
of these data and a corresponding mark is awarded. This
enables an objective assessment of the driving style and allows
the training to be tailored to the individual driver. FleetBoard
Performance Analysis3) together with FleetBoard EcoSupport2)
also ensure that the driver retains on a lasting basis the fuelefficient driving style acquired in Mercedes-Benz EcoTraining,
for example. All in all, this can result in sustained fuel savings
of up to 15%.
EcoTraining. Mercedes-Benz EcoTraining3) aims to convey a driving style
conducive to exploiting the technical potential of your truck even more effectively.
This can lead to fuel savings of up to 10%.
FleetBoard Drivers’ League. A contest where drivers can
demonstrate their skills. This makes saving fuel fun and
offers double rewards. Your drivers can win attractive prizes
and you reduce your costs. More information and registration at: www.driversleague.com
MercedesServiceCard. With the free MercedesServiceCard
you can benefit from the UTA supply network with 33,500
diesel service stations throughout Europe. In addition, you
will receive a fuel consultation to reduce costs on individual
trips, continuously updated information on the 1000 cheapest
filling stations in Germany and simple fuel cost monitoring.

FleetBoard EcoSupport2). The system assists the driver in a fuel-saving driving
style. To this end it displays tips while on the road that provide an opportunity to
further optimise the individual driving style and reduce fuel consumption.
Fuel Duel. In the Mercedes-Benz Fuel Duel the Actros Euro VI proves what it
is capable of in daily use: on average it consumes 11.1%4) less diesel than its
competitors in the duel. Results and further information: www.fuelduel.com

Predictive Powertrain Control: it knows your route.
From start to finish. And provides for additional diesel
savings of up to 5%.
In long-haul or distribution transport, with Predictive Powertrain Control you are more economical on the road. Because the
system always knows the route ahead. And this provides for fuel savings of up to 5% on motorways and highways with PPC
coverage in western and eastern Europe.
Predictive Powertrain Control1). The system integrates
a driving style adapted to the given topography into the
automated gearshift: with the aid of GPS and a 3D road map
it identifies downhill and uphill gradients ahead and opti
mises shift points, gear selection and cruise control speed
accordingly in anticipatory mode. In addition to the upper
hysteresis, a lower hysteresis now also requires to be set on
the cruise control. A level of –5 km/h is recommendable
here. This level can be adjusted between 0 and 15 km/h,
depending on the given traffic density. In short: the vehicle
rolls, accelerates and shifts gear in anticipatory mode. And
in a manner which is pleasant to the driver. The speed is
increased ahead of a steep hill, for example, overrun mode
is deployed ahead of the brow of a hill, momentum peaks
are exploited in valleys and EcoRoll is used on the level. The
system operates from a speed of 30 km/h and is available
on motorways and highways (95% coverage). The result is a
reduction in fuel consumption of up to 5%.
Topography-oriented driving style. Predictive Powertrain Control uses digital 3D road maps and GPS information to generate an electronic horizon which is employed
to optimise shift points, gear selection and the set cruise control speed in anticipatory mode. In this way, a driving style adapted to the given topography which will
generally be beyond the capabilities even of experienced drivers can be integrated into the automated system, resulting in additional fuel savings of up to 5%.
8
Profitable overall solutions | Predictive Powertrain Control
Driving situation: steep uphill gradient.
To avoid gear-shifting as far as possible on the uphill gradient, PPC shifts down
in good time ahead of the uphill stretch and/or increases the speed within the
upper hysteresis range as appropriate. Predictive Powertrain Control additionally
provides for an optimised shift sequence, e.g. less gear changes and larger gear
steps.
Driving situation: coasting.
Why accelerate when coasting is sufficient? The kinetic energy of the vehicle is
constantly determined. In other words: the vehicle identifies automatically
whether the set cruise control speed can be attained quickly enough in coasting
mode. In addition, EcoRoll can be used to reduce engine drag losses.
Advantages at a glance.
–– Predictive Powertrain Control1): up to 5% less
fuel consumption resulting from a driving style
adapted to the given topography
–– Identification of the course of the road – uphill
and downhill gradients ahead, for example
–– Optimisation of shift points, gear selection
and the set cruise control speed
–– Optimum use of the system via trafficdependent setting with upper and lower
hysteresis
–– Available in western and eastern Europe on
motorways and highways with PPC coverage
Driving situation: brow of a hill.
The principle centres on coasting over the brows of hills to avoid braking on
downhill stretches. The kinetic energy of the vehicle is continuously determined.
This enables the Actros or the Antos to assess in good time whether it can
coast over the brow of the hill at adequate speed. EcoRoll can be used to reduce
engine drag losses.
Driving situation: EcoRoll.
As a result of precise activation, Predictive Powertrain Control is able to make
optimum use of EcoRoll phases. This means that in addition to saving fuel on
virtually level stretches, EcoRoll is also activated ahead of the brows of hills and
at the end of uphill stretches below the set speed. This results in markedly
longer EcoRoll phases.

The higher the resale value, the lower
the acquisition costs. It’s as simple as that.
After acquiring an Actros or an Antos you can look forward to particularly economical operation throughout its useful life.
At the same time, the expected high resale value lays the foundations for the future. Because a first-rate truck is an investment
in the next truck.
Resale value. As a result of their innovative vehicle technology
and the job-matched vehicle configurations, the Actros and
Antos offer the prospect of a particularly high resale value in
long-haul or heavy-duty distribution transport. This is an
important consideration for every truck operator, The higher
the resale value at the end of its time in your operation, the
lower are the acquisition costs for a new truck. If you want
to know how much you can expect when returning your
vehicle, you can request a guaranteed buy-back price through
the TruckStore Buy-Back contract at the time of purchasing
your truck. As a calculable factor for the future, this provides
you with a sounder basis on which to plan the allocation of
your capital resources – also with regard to the investment
in your next truck.
TruckStore. With 28 centres in a total of 14 European countries, the international TruckStore network and expert sales staff offer you access to a unique pool of
used trucks covering all brands, age categories and model variants. From used semitrailer tractors to trailers. Vehicles as individual as your needs and wishes – but with
