JOHN ARDEN
PLAYWRIGHT AND NOVELIST
John Arden first came to prominence as one of the
Royal Court playwrights in the late 1950s. His best
known play, Serjeant Musgrave’s Dance, shocked the
critical establishment and his radical stance has been
consistent ever since. In the 1970s he made Galway
his home. To mark his 80th year, the Town Hall Theatre
pays tribute to his lifetime achievement.
The evening will present a unique collage of short
excerpts from Arden’s work, introduced by himself,
illustrating the wide diversity of his work. It will feature
a mix of music, performance and archival film clips,
including Arden in his acting role in Bob Quinn’s film
Caoineadh Art Uí Laoire. It will also feature a rehearsed
reading of selected scenes from Serjeant Musgrave’s
Dance, directed by Eamonn Draper.

OUT OF TIME
DEVISED AND PERFORMED BY COLIN DUNNE
A multiple World Irish Dance champion in his teens, Colin
was the lead male dancer in Riverdance from 1995 - 1998,
but in recent years he has been forging a new creative
path. In 2007 he was nominated for a UK National Dance
Award for performances at The Barbican in Fabulous
Beast’s production of The Bull.
Out of Time is his first solo show and premiered in January
2008 to huge acclaim. The show seamlessly integrates
movement, text, film and sound design with the Irish
step dance tradition to offer a contemporary perspective
on the art form. Dunne’s percussive footwork is digitally
processed live, then looped, remixed and layered to create
a hauntingly evocative soundscore. Visually he is joined
onstage by projected archival images of dancers from the
1930s onwards - including himself as a ten year old boy.

OEDIPUS LOVES YOU
BY SIMON DOYLE AND GAVIN QUINN
“Wickedly funny and
wonderfully theatrical”
THE IRISH TIMES
With dark humour and a live punk music
score, this eccentric and original production
is inspired by the classic Oedipus plays of
Sophocles and Seneca. The myth is transferred
to a dysfunctional suburban household.
The cast act out a complex family history the self-pitying Oedipus, the suicidal Jacosta,
the moody teenager Antigone and her cocainesniffing uncle Creon.
This daring production comes to Galway
following a critically acclaimed season in New
York in 2009 and the Sydney Festival in 2010.
THE PERFORMANCE CORPORATION
SLATTERY’S
SAGO SAGA
Leading economist and commentator David
McWilliams takes to the stage - a vivid,
humorous and uncompromising account of
Ireland’s boom and bust… and our way out.
Ireland’s political and social divide is not so
much about rich and poor, but about insiders
and outsiders. The insiders - those who believe
that today’s status quo must be preserved; the
outsiders - those who realise that the status
quo is part of the problem. But there is an
alternative.
Performed to sold out houses earlier this year
on the Peacock stage.

Dancing at Lughnasa is one of Friel’s
undisputed masterpieces. It is a drama that
mixes memory with desire, generous humour
with piercing sadness. One moment you are
laughing uproariously, the next your eyes are
filled with stinging tears. Whatever the mood
happens to be, at every moment the play
feels startlingly true, tender and fresh.

Take a bow!
The arts really matter to us in Ireland; they are a big part of people’s lives, the
country’s single most popular pursuit. Our artists interpret our past, define who
we are today, and imagine our future. We can all take pride in the enormous
reputation our artists have earned around the world.
The arts play a vital role in our economy, and smart investment of taxpayers’
money in the arts is repaid many times over. The dividends come in the form of
a high value, creative economy driven by a flexible, educated, innovative work
force, and in a cultural tourism industry worth A2.4 billion directly a year.
The Arts Council is the Irish Government agency for funding and developing
the arts. Arts Council funding from the taxpayer, through the Department of
Arts, Sport and Tourism, for 2010 is A69.15 million, that’s less than A1 a week
for every household.
So, at the end of your next inspirational encounter with the arts, don’t forget
the role you played and take a bow yourself!
