ry playing golf without the assistance
of a golf cart (the “buggy” as it is
also known here at KGS). Only a
golfer who is physically fit and strong or
one who is frugal and saves every penny
(sen) still plays golf either by pulling his
own golf bag with the aid of a trolley or
he hires a caddy to do the donkey work
for him. Yes, your guess is correct. I am
going to draw your attention to the buggy
issue and devote the entire editorial on
the golfer’s new “beast of burden” - the
buggy. I will touch specifically on the new
KGS buggy system that is about to go
into full operation pretty soon.
The contract for the current buggy
operation at KGS expires on September
30, 2013. After this date SKH, the
present contractor who has been KGS
buggy contractor since October 1, 2001
will cease operation. For the last 12 years
SKH has made available 144 serviceable
buggies. In the course of those 12 years
the contractor has provided satisfactory
service in spite of minor ups and downs.
On the whole, KGS appreciates the
contractor’s patience, understanding and
cooperation. Such an atmosphere has
enabled both sides to work together as
a team to meet customers’ needs.
The question on every golfing member’s
mind is this: Is SKH’s contract going
to be renewed? The answer is a plain
“NO”. Now, the next question is “What
next”? This editorial helps to explain to
members that with effect from October
1, 2013 KGS has decided to run the
buggy operation on its own and an
external contractor will no longer be
necessary. For a start, 140 units of
golf carts (buggies) have already been
purchased at the total cost of RM3.3
million. Our buggy supplier will deliver the
140 buggies at the latest on September
30, 2013.
First and foremost, the in-house
operating system will necessitate KGS
to bring about some changes, for the

better, we hope. It is learned that there
will be a marked improvement in the
buggy service. This is welcome news.
Naturally, the buggy centre will have to
undergo a substantial redevelopment
and upgrading. This will require spending,
and funds will have to be made available
for that purpose. That brings to mind the
need to upgrade the buggy tracks which
are showing signs of wear and tear after
all these years as well as the inevitable
effect of ageing. It is therefore to be
expected that we would soon be seeing
a new, improved buggy system. There
has been much thought going on behind
the scene prior to the implementation
of the new buggy system. Both the
pros and cons have been carefully
considered and thrashed out. It is
clear that the in-house buggy system
is the better option, and therefore, its
implementation. The management
deserves our congratulations for doing
what it does to raise the standard of
overall club facilities to keep abreast with
other clubs in the region and to march
with the times.
Our optimism should not be so quickly
dampened by the news that the club
requires members to exercise strict
discipline when using the new buggies.
In fact, it is desirable for everyone to be
disciplined. In all our dealings in life we
are governed by discipline, rules and
regulations. We have to learn to treat
these buggies as our own properties.
In fact, they are. Therefore, we need to
drive our buggies with the greatest care
and to avoid being reckless and careless.
Remember that each time a buggy
is undergoing repairs there is money
involved - KGS money, for all you know it
is members’ money. By that we mean it is
our responsibility to see to it that the rules
and regulations carefully crafted by those
who have the knowledge and experience
on this matter to ensure buggy and user
safety must be strictly observed and
adhered to. Every golfing member is
entrusted with the responsibility to be

the caretaker of the buggy they use. I
am sure that that is not too much to ask
of everyone who shares the ideals and
objective of such a rule and regulation.
Members may or may not know it. A
good and functioning buggy is necessary
to attract more prospective users. I would
certainly avoid renting a bad buggy. A
buggy that fails to function properly will
cause so much inconvenience when your
mind should be focused on your golf not
the problems created by a malfunctioning
buggy. A poor buggy that constantly
breaks down will definitely affect my
game. There should be more buggy
users to bring more income for KGS.
Members should be alert and aware of
the possibility of our club buggy as an
income generating sports apparatus.

he club revived its golfing activities after a month long silence in Ramadan
and kicked off with the Hari Raya Open House Golf on 18th August
which was overwhelmingly participated by our members. The much
anticipated Captain’s Alumni Golf followed closely behind which was held
on 1st September 2013.
The last month of the third quarter also witnessed the visit by DYMM Seri
Paduka Baginda Yang Di-Pertuan Agong XIV Almu’tassimu Billahi Muhibbudin
Tuanku Alhaj Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah
and DYMM Seri Paduka Baginda Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Hajah
Haminah to our club for some recreational golf with Tuan Yang Terutama
Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Muhammad
Salahuddin together with senior government officers and local dignitaries in
conjunction with the “50 Tahun Sarawak Merdeka dalam Malaysia” celebration
organised by the state government.
KGS will be sending a team of elite golfers to participate in the Sarawak InterClub Championship 2013 which will be held in Bintulu Golf Club. I would like
to wish our team all the best and do well to defend the title held by the club.
The Professional Golfers Malaysia will once again organise the PGM MNRB
Sarawak Masters at KGS which will be held on the 3rd – 6th October 2013.
The event will be played at Siol Demak as Matang Santubong is currently
undergoing some course improvement works.
Our new fleet of buggies is expected to arrive at the end of September and
will be put into use by early October. We are also planning to renovate our
current buggy centre and have allocated two of our tennis courts for use as
temporary buggy centre until the completion of the renovation which will take
about 2 months to complete. In view of the high investment that the club has
put in to operate its own buggies, there shall be some adjustments to the
buggy fees with effect from October 2013. We seek the understanding of our
members for the fee hike and assure that the buggy services will be elevated.

Happenings
The Sarawak Classic 2013 was held at
Kelab Golf Sarawak on 6th and 7th July
2013. Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr. George
Chan’s Challenge Trophy was participated
by over 100 golfers from affiliated clubs. This
2-day tournament was the SGA sanction
event.
Alex Tiong Wei Zen from Sibu emerged
as champion after he carded a total 2-day
gross score of 149. Defending champion,
Lee Ka Tung failed to defend his title after
he returned a total gross score of 150 and
finished in second place. Meanwhile Lee’s
brother Lee Ka Tiong finished in third place
with a total gross score of 154.
In the nett category, Dylan Tan took the
title after he carded a total nett score of
135 leaving his opponent Samdrick Yeo in
second and Alidas Sain in third both with
a total nett score of 143. Meanwhile, in
the ladies category, 178 total gross was
just enough for Laura Goh to become the
champion with Latifah Bujang in second
who scored 184. Sim Meng Kee was the
ladies nett category winner after she carded
a total score of 151.

Caddy’s Welfare: “Duit Raya”
Presentation
he presentation of “Duit Raya” to the caddies was held
at KGS Lobby on Monday, 29th July 2013. About 80
caddies were given RM50 gift each on that day. The
gift was from Caddy Welfare Fund generated through caddy
booking of RM10 per caddy. The gift was presented by KGS
Club Captain, Tuan Haji Abdul Jalil Bin Abdul Rahman. The
Caddy and Course Traffic chairman Mr. Augustine Chin was
also present on that day. Tuan Haji Abdul Jalil stated that
the gift was in appreciation of the caddies’ commitment and
services to the club. Tuan Haji also reminded the caddies to
be honest, sincere and dedicated in carrying out their other
duties such as repair of the divots, rake bunkers as well as
to ensure safety of golfers’ properties.

Happenings
Hari Raya Open House Golf 2013
Over 120 golfers participated in the Hari Raya Open
House Golf 2013 which was held on 18th August 2013.
The event which was followed by Open House was
organised by Kelab Golf Sarawak and PGABS. Over
200 guests and golfers took part to celebrate the Open
House which commenced at 1.30 pm.
Besides the golfing event, lucky draws, donation and
“duit raya” presentation were also held as part of the
activities in the event. The donation from KGS to
PERYATIM with the sum of RM 2000 was presented on
that day. 30 children from PERYATIM also received the
“Duit Raya” and “Kek Lapis” from the KGS and PGABS
Committees.

Yeah!! We Are The Champions
Captain’s Alumni Golf 2013
The KGS Captain’s Alumni Golf was held on 1st September
2013 at Siol and Demak Courses. The Tan Sri William Mawan’s
Challenge Trophy was the annual event participated by over
90 golfers representing their respective schools: St. Joseph’s,
St. Thomas, Tanjong Lobang and Sacred Heart.
It had been raining just before the tee off time making the
players struggle to record their best scores. However, the desire
to make their beloved schools win made them determined to
finish their game successfully.
The Sacred Heart team emerged the winner for the best
dress category. They maintained the best dress award for two
consecutive years. For individual event nett category, Lionel
Bong Thian Loi was declared the winner after he carded a
total nett score of 70, leaving Sulaiman Sahari in second and
Jim Neging in third place with both of them recorded nett
score of 71.
Joseph Lau who returned a score of 84 gross became the
champion followed by Wan Liz Farwana in second with a gross
score of 85 and Peter Goh came in third with a gross score of
86. Tanjong Lobang team failed to defend the championship
trophy that they won last year after they fell to second place in
the team event to St. Joseph’s. St. Joseph’s School became
a new KGS Captain’s Alumni Golf Champion after they carded
a total nett score of 1540. Meanwhile Tanjong Lobang came
in second place with a total nett score of 1578.

A
n elderly lady from a remote
interior village went to one of the
most fashionable suburbs to visit her
niece and husband. Nearby was a
very well known golf course.
On the second afternoon of her visit,
the elderly lady went for a stroll.
Upon her return, the young niece
asked, "Well, Auntie, did you enjoy
yourself?"
"Oh, yes, indeed," said Auntie,
beaming. "Before I had walked very
far, I came to some beautiful rolling
fields. There seemed to be a number
of people about, mostly men. Some
of them kept shouting at me in a
very eccentric manner, but I took no
notice. There were four men who
followed me for some time, uttering
curious excited barking sounds.
Naturally, I ignored them, too. Oh,
by the way," she added, as she held
out her hands, "I found a number of
these curious little round white balls,
so I picked them all up and brought
them home hoping you could explain
what they're all about."
Married Four Times
Golf Jokes
T
he news division of a local TV station
was interviewing an 80-year-old lady
because she had just gotten married for
the fourth time. The interviewer asked
her questions about her life, about
what it felt like to be marrying again at
80, and then about her new husband's
occupation. "He's a funeral director,"
she answered.
"Interesting," the newsman thought.
He then asked her if she wouldn't mind telling him a little about her
first three husbands and what they did for a living. She paused for
a few moments, needing time to reflect on all those years. After a
short time, a smile came to her face and she answered proudly,
explaining that she had first married a banker when she was in her
20's and he was in his mid-50’s. She met her husband when she
was playing golf and she was also an avid golfer at that time. Her
second marriage was to a circus ringmaster when in her 40's,
and a preacher when in her 60's, and now - in her 80's - a funeral
director.
The interviewer looked at her, quite astonished, and asked why
she had married four men with such diverse careers.
She smiled and explained,
"My first marriage was for the money, my second marriage was for
the show, third marriage was to get ready, and fourth marriage was
in preparation for me to go."
Anniversary Present
At
the Murugan Golf Club near London, married golfing
husbands are treated to a quarterly marriage seminar.
Last week, after a game of golf, the speaker for the seminar
approached one golfing husband by the name of Nadarajah.
The speaker said to Nadarajah, “You are approaching your 50th
wedding anniversary. Could you spare a few minutes and share
some insight secret how you have managed to stay married to the
same woman all these 50 years?”
Nadarajah replied to the assembled husbands in the club’s seminar room,‘‘Well, I've tried to treat her nice,
spend money on her, bought her enough jewelleries and sarees, but best of all is, I took her to Chennai,
India for the 25th anniversary!”
The speaker responded, ‘‘Nadarajah, you are an amazing inspiration to all the husbands here! Please tell us
what you are planning for your wife for your 50th anniversary?”
Nadarajah proudly replied, “I’m going back to Chennai to pick her up."
A Big Kiss

or health and fitness reasons, John, a fifty something burly biker, goes to the golf course for a game of
golf on his bike unlike his colleagues who drive their cars there.
Riding back home after a game, he stopped at a bridge where he saw a scantily dressed girl, sobbing, was
about to jump off. John stepped forward and said to the girl, "Darling, just before you jump down the bridge,
give me a big kiss."
