A Masterpiece Living Community
Living with purpose and growing Spiritually, Intellectually, Physically, Socially
MASTERPIECE LIVING EDUCATION:
The Breton Buzz
I have never participated in the Lifestyle Review. What is it?
The Lifestyle Review provides you with a detailed picture of your lifestyle at the time that you complete it. It is a thirteen
page packet that asks questions related to the four components of successful aging that Masterpiece Living focuses on;
spiritual, intellectual, physical and social. After you complete it, you will be given a report that will outline how your lifestyle
compares to a healthy aging lifestyle. The results are very interesting and, like the Mobility Review, help you know what areas
you might want to work on or what types of goals you might want to set for yourself. During the month of your birthday
you will be invited to participate in the Lifestyle Review. If you do not want to wait until the month of your birthday, you can
call the Director of Masterpiece Living at 643-2724 to sign up for an appointment at any time. Again, your participation helps
us to see how Raybrook is doing and, when combined with Breton Woods’ data, how Holland Home is doing.

Meet the Staff!
Come to the Ridge morning coffee on Thursday,
September 18th to meet and get acquainted with Sara Heethuis, Executive Director of the Breton Woods Campus and
Troy Vugetveen, Vice President of Operations for
Holland Home. Donuts will be provided! Sara Heethuis
and Troy Vugetveen will arrive at 9:00.
2014 Choir Season! Well, that time of year has
arrived again. The Breton Woods choir will begin
its rehearsals on Thursday, September 11 at
3:30 in Centre Place at the Terrace. If interested in
joining the choir, please call Jake Scheeres at 281-3507.
New voices are always welcome! All of your voices will
certainly enhance another season of praising God in song.
Pictorial Directories! The newest version of the
pictorial directory, complete with the current resident’s
photos, is available for purchase in the Resident Service
Offices. Be sure to see Amy or Sara for your copy for just
$10.00. A great way to get to know your neighbors.
Calvin's CALL Noontime Series has started up for the
fall! We will be streaming them between the Ridge and the
Terrace a couple days after the 'live' session. The first session, Fatal Crossing, will be shown on Tuesday, September
9th in Centre Place. This session is led by Valerie van Heest
and chronicles a team that sets off to find the wreck of NW
Airlines flight 2501 over Lake Michigan on June 23, 1950
with 58 souls on board. The next session will be two weeks
after that at the Ridge and is entitled Savoring Michigan's Rich
Foodie & Agricultural History by Dianne Stampfler. There will
be posters hanging up at each building with the full schedule.
Fall is up and running! Things are beginning to hustle and bustle at Breton Woods.
Spiritual Growth opportunities that begin this month are:
Sept. 6- Saturday morning hymn sing - Terrace Lobby at 9:15 a.m.
Sept. 10- Wednesday morning Bible study - Center Place at 9:30 a.m.
Sept. 11- Breton Woods Choir - Centre Place at 3:30 p.m.
Sept. 15- Preview day - check out all the Bible studies & have coffee - Bistro at 1:00 p.m.
Sept. 24- Coffee Break Bible discovery - Ridge Private Dining Room at 1:30 p.m.
Chaplain’s Corner
The Gospel Coin Ministry is an effort to be part of 'sowing the seed' and God will 'reap the harvest'. A basket of these coins
are free for the taking and are found in the Centre Place Lobby and in the Vineyard on the table under the stairway in the Ridge.
A good time to give a coin is when you get a receipt for a purchase, tip a waitress 'with an extra coin', doctor's office, store
clerks, small children, etc. Many will ask "what is it"? A good answer is: "It's the world's best kept secret". When asked why you
are giving it to them you might respond with "We love because HE first loved us". More information is available from Grace or
Bernie Garlid at 827-9077.
Do you sometimes wish we could sing a song in our worship services that is not in our hymn book? Some of the newer
songs we are singing in our own churches have beautiful words and music. If you have a favorite that you would like to sing
during the worship services, even if it is in the book, we will make an effort to find it for you and sing it on a Sunday when you
will be there. Please let Pastor Ardean know at 643-2536.

Care Concerns: Care Concerns is a great way of having the Breton
Woods Community know about your medical concerns and have the
opportunity to pray for you. There are Care Concern forms in the
Terrace Resident Service Office and in the Post Office at the
Ridge. Completing and returning this form serves as a permission slip
so that family members may be contacted to find out what you would
like printed on the Care Concern’s sheet that is posted at both the Ridge
and the Terrace, and is also sent out by e-mail to those who have asked
to receive it. If you would appreciate thoughts and prayers, fill out the
form and put it in Arlene Timmer’s mailbox (Terrace # 3000) or turn it
into the Resident Service Office. To join the e-mail list, send an e-mail
request to [email protected].

you may be a new resident who is wondering how to go about
joining the group. We have an active group that meets every Monday at
7:00 pm in the Terrace Woods Café. If you are interested and would
like more information, call Elaine Pomeroy at 455-5566.
Per the Breton Woods handbook, only one bird feeder
per (Homes) patio is permitted. Also, please be conscious of the seed used in the feeders. Thistle spread
from the feeder is beginning to create growth of thistle
throughout the campus grounds. We know those goldfinches amongst other birds enjoy this food; as an alternative, we suggested shelled and cracked sunflower seed.

Why “Avoiding Gluten” and not “Gluten Free”?
Dining Services will be changing our term to "Avoiding Gluten"
verses "Gluten Free." Recently the term "gluten-free" has
been legally defined as having less than 20 parts per million in
the food product. In our open kitchen settings, the risk of
cross-contact from other gluten-containing foods means that we can not
safely claim that any food we handle meets this definition. To clearly and
safely communicate how we have prepared our foods without gluten, you
will now see and hear: "Avoiding Gluten."
We will continue to offer Udi's certified gluten-free manufactured bread
and rolls as an alternative to our standard breads and rolls.
If you have questions or concerns regarding special diets or menu items,
contact Ann Marie Villarreal, Director of Dining Services, at 643-2510.
Programmable Thermostats:
Facility Services explored the possibility of installing programmable
thermostats offered to Holland Home by DTE Energy. After further
investigation, and getting a sample thermostat from DTE, Facility Services
has decided it is in the best interest of Holland Home Residents that we
do not pursue this further. We cannot use the programmable thermostats
because they are not compatible with our furnace wiring system.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may have for you.
Sincerely,
Facility Services of Holland Home
My name is Melissa Crawford and I am a
new addition to the Terrace Salon. I have
22 years of experience in cosmetology,
haircuts, styles, perms, color, etc. I have
a wonderful family. My husband and I have
been married for almost 15 years and we
have 2 incredible kids. Our son is 13 and
our daughter is 9. We love spending time
at our cabin enjoying the outdoors, I love
to read and I love doing hair. Helping
people feel good about themselves is my
passion. I look forward to meeting you and getting to know you.
Come see me at the Terrace Salon.
My name is Bob Siekman, and I was
recently hired as the Director of Facility
Services. I am a native Michigander growing
up in Buchanan, southwest of Kalamazoo.
After graduating from high school, I
decided to go into the field of mechanical
engineering. I obtained a BSME from
Tri-State University in Angola, Indiana
which is just north of Fort Wayne. After
graduation, I worked as a production supervisor and product engineer for Clark
Equipment Company in Buchanan. After 17
years, Clark moved to North Carolina, and I decided not to move
with them, but stay in Michigan. I found a job in the Detroit area,
working for Rockwell International as a Program Manager. While at
Rockwell, I was able to obtain a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan. My career path next took
me to work for Zimmerman Handling Systems, as Director of Engineering for three facilities; two in the Detroit area, and one outside
of Nashville, Tennessee.
After 10 years in the Detroit area, I wanted to move back to West
Michigan. There was an opportunity in Cadillac working for Avon Automotive, a rubber and plastics manufacturer for the automotive industry, as Engineering Manager. During this time I was able to learn
about principles of lean, six-sigma, obtain a PhD in Engineering Management, and work at Baker College part time as a professor in
mathematics and basic engineering classes. Over the years starting in
Buchanan, and carrying through my time in Cadillac, I became involved in community service, later developing an interest in health
care. I was a member of the National Ski Patrol, volunteering my time
at Royal Valley in Buchanan, Alpine Valley in Pontiac, and Caberfae
Peaks in Cadillac. Also, due to the first aid required to be a ski patroller, I taught for the American Red Cross, teaching classes in First Aid,
CPR, AED, Vital Signs and Emergency Care. The automotive industry
began a downturn, and I was able to work at AAR and Avon Protection Systems in Cadillac, which are Department of Defense contractors. My love for the health care industry was increasing, and an opportunity opened up for a Director of Environmental Services in
Traverse City, Michigan at the Grand Traverse Pavilions. My wife and
I prayed for direction in our lives, knowing we have not fulfilled our
calling, and we feel blessed that God has lead us to Grand Rapids and
Holland Home.
You’re invited!
Come meet and welcome four individuals of families who were
welcomed to the U.S. by Bethany Christian Services as a part of the
Refugee Admissions Program. These are the families who are farming
a portion of the five acre plot leased by Holland Home to Bethany
Christian Services. This five acre plot is located behind the Ridge
near the tree nursery.
Friday, September 12th
3:00 pm
Vineyard at Breton Ridge
Information:
The families have come to the United States seeking refuge from
their country where they were facing well-founded fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, or political opinion.
Because of agencies like Bethany Christian Services, organizations
such as Holland Home and compassionate neighborhoods such as
Breton Woods, these four families have a chance to build a new life.
It is a truly a blessing to play a part in providing hope and encouragement for them.
The families are refugees from Bhutan and Burma. These cultures
are known to value family and possess a strong work ethic. They are
compassionate and desire to promote good will to all whose paths
they cross.
Here is some information of each of the individual farmers:
Kharka Gurung is from Bhutan. He has been in the U.S. for two
years, is married and has three children. His wife, daughter and eldest son work in the local manufacturing industry to support the family. With his astute eye and steady work ethic, he is able to supplement the family income and pantry by doing what he does so well –
grow food! Kharka Gurung lived in camps in Nepal for 25 years.
Thawng Mu is from Burma. He and his family have been in the U.S.
for five years. He is married and has six children. He works third
shift at a manufacturing plant and most days will come to the farm
to manage their garden plot. Thawng Mu and his family fled the
Burmese civil war to Malaysia where they lived for six years while
seeking asylum.
That Wah is from Burma. She has been in the U.S. for five years.
She has two daughters and a son. She is known as being persistent,
patient and quiet – yet full of laughter! That Wah lived in refugee
camps in Thailand for many years before coming to the U.S.
Nah Thah Dah is from Burma. She and her family came to the U.S.
four years ago. She has seven children and three grand children.
Her past experience involves selling produce and running a restaurant. She is driven and hopes to one day own her own restaurant and
continue to maintain the farm with the help of her children. Nah
Thah Dah lived in refugee camps in Thailand.
We look forward to providing a warm welcoming to these individuals
and their families. Depending upon weather conditions, a tour of the
farm will be given after the event. Those interested in touring the
farm will walk from the Ridge to the farm location. Please know the
ground in this area is very uneven and may not be safe for all.

NEED A LAUGH??
Chosen
Written by Helen VanDyke
(Deceased wide of Gilbert VanDyke)
Great plans I made to travel
Famed roads to gloryland.
The map was clearly outlined;
I’d travel as I planned.
My waywardness seemed trifle;
I journeyed on with ease.
Tempting detours met enroute
With pleasure I did seize.
As I pursued my travels,
I heard an inner voice.
Whispering I had wandered,
Had gone the way of choice.
Orders came: “Take up thy cross,
Come thou and follow me.”
I then was truly chosen,
For all eternity.
For Me
Written by Helen VanDyke
(Deceased wife of Gilbert VanDyke)
A wooden cross bore my Lord;
Twas not the cross my savior bore.
My transgression thus He bore His cross,
That I might know life forevermore.
Going Down!!
As the storm raged, the captain realized his ship was sinking fast. He called out, "Anyone here
know how to pray?" One man stepped forward. "Aye, Captain, I know how to pray." "Good,"
said the captain, "you pray while the rest of us put on our life jackets - we're one short."
A Child's Point of View
The story of Adam and Eve was being carefully explained in the children's Sunday School class.
Following the story, the children were asked to draw some picture that would illustrate the
story. Little Bobby drew a picture of a car with three people in it. In the front seat was a man
and in the back seat, a man and a woman. The teacher was at a loss to understand how this
illustrated the lesson of Adam and Eve. Little Bobby was prompt with his explanation. "Why,
this is God driving Adam and Eve out of the garden!"
Liquid, Fragile or Perishable?
There was a very gracious lady who was mailing an old family bible to
her brother in another part of the country.
"Is there anything breakable in here?" asked the postal clerk.
"Only the Ten Commandments," answered the lady.
My Dad's Better Than Your Dad
Three boys on the playground were bragging about their dads. One said. "My dad scribbles
a few words, calls it a song and they pay him 50 bucks."
"Oh, yah. My dad scribbles a few words, calls it a poem and they pay him 100 bucks."
"That's nothin'," said the third kid. My dad scribbles a few words, calls it a sermon and it
takes six people to collect all the money!"
The Sin of Lying
A minister told his congregation, “Next week I plan to preach about the sin of lying. To
help you understand my sermon, I want you all to read Mark 17.”
The following Sunday, as he prepared to deliver his sermon, the minister asked for a show of
hands. He wanted to know how many had read Mark 17. Several went up. The minister smiled and
said, “Mark has only sixteen chapters. I will now proceed with my sermon on the sin of lying.”
