John and Donna Biggie are chairing a cruise around the southwester and then dinner, that’s Something COB’ers are going to enjoy. Nothing like driving those beautiful cars and filling our bellies. We have John Heffernan and his always fun Williamsville Parade, here you may drive a little slower but the end is the same we all go back to the V.F.W. post and fill our bellies, does anyone see a pattern starting to develop? As I have said in the past please check your activities sheet to find out what’s going on and when your fellow C.O.B members who have worked hard to put an event Together for us to enjoy. We have three shows this year that we are involved in, Salvatore’s Super Cruise, Cruise -in-at The Falls and finally our all Corvette Caravan. All three events are Peddle to the metal. I would like to see every member and prospective get Involved in these events, so please talk to the chairperson of these events to see how you can help! Remember your only going to get out of the club what you put into it , so let’s work on being “The Corvette Club “ in the northeast. Thanks to Ray & Debbie Schafer for chairing our first Ice-Cream Social of the year at Country Peddler, although the weather was a little iffy we still had 15 vettes and a couple steel cars with a total of 33 members. We are still looking for July’s Ice-Cream social so if you would like to chair one or help find our next stop Please contact me and we can set something up. Almost forgot Bruce & Ruth Mussehl have a new addition to their family but I can’t tell you if it’s a new grandchild or new corvette. I guess you will have to come to the next meeting. Joe Dione, John Meyerhoff, Skip Polowy, Peter Ricigliano, Mel Skeide and myself, Lowell R., traveled to Springville to give 16 queens a ride through town behind their school’s bands. They were all graduating seniors and were beautiful. The queens and bands represented schools from New York City, New Jersey, Rochester, Forestville, Lancaster and other cities. There were also a few other young ladies who were invited to attend the parade. They were beautiful, too! In all, there were 13 Corvettes (6 from COB), a nicely restored ’47 Chevy flat bed truck and a little MG sports car doing the honors of carrying the girls along the parade route. The owner of the MG carried his own daughter in the parade and the ’47 flat bed carried all the town dignitaries to the reviewing stand in the center of town. The weather was very cold and mostly cloudy but only a few sprinkles of rain fell, not even enough to wet the windshields. We had our defrosters on high to give the girls a little heat while they sat on the back decks of the cars. Col or not, the girls had a great time! There’s a nice restaurant in Springville called “Papa Jake’s,” a rustic place that used to be the town railroad station. It has great atmosphere and wonderful food, a full menu and nice bar. They even have clams! Kyle Manchester, our contact for the Springville parade, made reservations for all the parade participants at Papa Jake’s and to our surprise, the queens were there also. We had a chance to mingle with them and take lots of pictures. Thank you Skip for all the pictures of us guys with the queens. We had just as much fun at Papa Jake’s as we did in the parade. Kyle thanked all of us for coming down for the parade and would like us to go back nest year. This was Mel’s first time there and he’s ready to go back! When we left the restaurant, everything was wet including our Vettes because it rained while we were inside. As soon as we left town, the roads were dry again. Thanks for participating guys! Lowell CORVETTES of BUFFALO pg 3 CORVETTES of BUFFALO pg 4 BIG RED-AGAIN Many years ago, I submitted a article for this newsletter regarding the purchase of our 2000 torch red Corvette coupe. In that article titled "First one, last one" I noted that our first Corvette ( a 1962, Roman red, 327-340 HP, 4 speed, convertible currently residing in Alabama) was replaced by a 66 Milano maroon Stingray, and eventually by the C5 which was to be our last Corvette. Well, you know how times and thoughts change. Along came the sixth generation of the Vettes and those C6's steadily grew on me as did the Crystal Red Metallic color. So, on January of 2010 we ordered CRM coupe and took possession of it on St. Patrick's day at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green Ky. One summer later, we finally sold our 2000 coupe (dubbed Big Red) and I was sort of sad to see it go because it was a beautiful car, but then our CRM coupe looked awesome as well. So, this was to be "it" for Corvette purchases. Well, you know how thoughts and times change. Along came January 2013 and fellow COB member Bob Meegan and I attended the unveiling of the seventh generation Corvette at the Detroit Auto Show in Cobo Hall. While viewing the grey C7 on the floor turntable, I happened to look up and saw a Torch Red C7 coupe suspended on the wall and it looked spectacular. At that very moment I turned to Bob and said "see that car up there?I'm getting one." Since that day, we have traveled to some of the larger volume dealers in Michigan, Maryland, and some in Buffalo and the suburbs, but nothing meaningful came out of these visits. Then in October 2013, I received a call from Al Ficarella who is the General Sales manager at Upstate Chevrolet in Attica N.Y. Al inquired if I was still interested in a C7 and when I replied in the affirmative a meeting date was set up. We arrived at Upstate, late October and in addition to Al, the dealership owner Frank Bork was present. We then picked out options for the car and Frank told us that even if we decided to back out of the deal (be cause GM was not giving allotments for the smaller dealerships until at least January 2014) Upstate was still going to order the car that we had picked. Over the course of the winter, we waited, and finally this spring Frank personally called me to say that GM had accepted "my" order. To pass the winter blues time, I viewed the Corvette Forum nightly to see how other orders were progressing and eventually through the Chevrolet Customer Service Tracking website, I discovered that our hopefully soon to be C7 was built on 5/5/14. Previously aware via the Forum, that delivery delays could be a month, six weeks, or more, I was resolved of the fact that the vehicle would not be be delivered in time for our clubs participation in the annual Memorial Day Veterans Parade in Williamsville N.Y. Then on the early afternoon of May 14Th. I received a call from Al Ficarella who informed me that the C7 was in transit and hopefully be at the Attica dealership in about a week to ten days. About two hours later, Al called back and said a Corvette car carrier had just arrived and OUR car was being offloaded. The vehicle was then prepped and Ruth and I took possession of it the next day, just nine days after it came off the factory line. Once again, we have a "Big Red" in the family and I must say it is truly a beautiful vehicle. Revive the wave! There were 17 vettes and 6 daily drivers that came to the COUNTRY PEDDLERS in W.Seneca on Wednesday MAY 21,2014. The enterprise is a down home country store, with fresh fruits, vegetables, some crafts and a HUGE nursery. They also make some of their ice cream flavors, one of which I'm partial to is chocolate covered strawberries! The weather was typical Buffalo spring, mix of clouds and SUN showers, no downpours! Our hosts Bonnie and Bob offered a discount on purchases and before the evening was out they had a raffle for TWO gift cards to their store! The lucky winners were Ruth Mussehl and Jeannette Masters. The club created some interest from passersby with the sea of CORVETTES! Thank You for support and they would like us to return soon! Save the Wave and Drive Safe Debbie & Ray Schafer CORVETTES of BUFFALO pg 8 Bruce is that your new garden wagon? CORVETTES of BUFFALO pg 9 Car Show 2014 Update The time is now for planning our Show at Salavor's Wednesday July 9TH (rain date he 10TH). Thank you Pete Ricigliano Salvatore's Car Cruise Basket Raffle We are pleased to announce the overwhelming interest in the basket raffle for our car show Wed., July 9th. So far we have 11 baskets and are looking for more. Men are encouraged to participate also. (2 men teams have signed up already.) You can contact Sue Brownlee, Patti Kirkland or Maureen Polowy if you have an interest or any questions. The signup sheet will be at our May meeting. Please make a list of the items in your basket so Patti can type it up and attach it to the basket. That way people will know what each basket contains. Thank you and see you in May, Sue, Patti and Maureen Two-Way Radio Etiquette With the coming of warm weather and Corvette cruising at its finest, we will be using our two-way radios more often. With this in mind it is time to brush up on “Two-Way Radio Etiquette” Be prepared. Ensure the battery is charged and the power is on. Keep the volume high enough to be able to hear calls. When using a two-way radio you cannot speak and listen at the same time, as you can with a phone. It is important to understand the differences between a telephone and a two-way radio. Two-way radios are not like a telephone. Telephones and cell phones are "full-duplex" which means you can talk and listen at the same time. Most two way radios are "simplex" which means you cannot hear anyone while you have the talk button pressed. 4 Golden Rules of Radio Communication 1.Clarity: Your voice should be clear. Speak a little slower than normal. Speak in a normal tone, do not shout. 2.Simplicity: Keep your message simple enough for intended listeners to understand. 3.Brevity: Be precise and to the point. 4.Security: Do not transmit confidential information on a radio unless you know the proper security technology is in place. Remember, frequencies are shared; you do not have exclusive use of the frequency. Hold the receiver several inches away from your mouth. Speak slowly and clearly so that the listener may understand you, and spell unusual terms if necessary. There may be static or background noises competing for the listener's ear. Don't speak immediately when you press the PTT (push to talk), especially with digital radios which among all their benefits have slightly longer delay. Wait 2-3 seconds. If you speak as soon you press the PTT button, it can chop off your the first syllable or word, making you hard to understand. If that word doesn't make it, you will just have to say it again and run down your batteries faster. Transmit only speech on a two-way radio. The Federal Communications Commission forbids the transmission of "sound effects (music, whistling, etc.) or obscene, profane, or indecent words." Also avoid noises strictly intended to attract attention or cause alarm. And the most important thing...Enjoy the ride.
