Convention from page 1
Our next speaker was Peter McKinn. Peter is a long time promoter
located in Arizona who works with Top Rank. His major points were:
> Local promoters are disappearing
> Promoters lose money on live TV shows
> The boxing sport needs uniformity between commissions to avoid
duplicity of medicals and other licensing requirements. These differences in commission requirements cause unneccessary expenses
for boxers, managers and promoters.
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Howdy NABF members,
Thanks to all of you who were with us at the
convention in Tucson. I hope you all had a great
time. Feedback from a lot of attendees tells me you
loved the hotel and enjoyed our convention.
We’re going to have our convention in Cancun next year. We have
made arrangements with the fantastic Riu
Palace, once again. This

because of the overwhelming success in 2006 and at the request of
many NABF members. We have selected the dates of June 3rd for
arrival and June 7th for departure. In the next newsletter, we will
have rates and contacts to make your reservations. We only have
100 rooms reserved for this period of time, so make your plans
early and get your airline tickets to avoid inevitable increases in
fares between now and then. The rates have not been set, but I
have been assured by the hotel that there would be less than a
10% price increase from what we enjoyed in 2006—which I feel is
reasonable.
Happy Trails To All My Friends.
Rex Ross Walker, president
The Executive Director of the Arizona State Boxing Commission,
John Montano was our next guest speaker. John has been director
for 32 years. His major points were:
> The role of the commission is to “Regulate”
> It’s primary job is to protect young boxers just entering the pros.
> He wishes to propose that sanctioning bodies have a program for
boxers after they leave boxing.
> Federal law requires promoters to provide medical insurance for
boxers. In the event of injury the promoter must pay the deductible Next up was our legal counsel, Bob Lenhardt. Bob read us a letter
from Jose Sulaiman who regretted not being able to attend this year.
or his commission will suspend the promoter’s license.
Rocky Burke offered a homage to our departed friend Jerry
Wright.
Stephen Blea took the podium next. His primary goal for the convention was to raise money for the family of deceased boxer, Rafael
Ortiz. Stephen brought a framed Julio Cesar Chavez WBC memorabilia and a glove signed by Ricardo Lopez. Both items were put on
silent auction.
The second General
Session on Friday
began with our promoter-friend Jimmy
Burchfield who accepted a medallion of
recognition for Matt
Remillard
who
fought for and won
the WBC World
Youth title on June
13th.
Jimmy’s most memorable statement was “I stand here to tell you
that the NABF and WBC is just the top of boxing”.
Dr. Robert Karns was up next to speak on several boxing issues:
> In the old days the weigh-in
was held the morning of the
fight. He doesn’t think this is
a good thing. The day-before
weigh-in is best.
> The use of electrolytes
would be very helpful to boxers.
> The 30 and 7 day weigh-in
instituted by the WBC is an
excellent system for protecting fighters.
Turn to Convention on page 4
Convention from page 3
Our legal counsel, Bob Lenhardt, presented our proposed rules
changes which were all ratified by the voting delegates.
1- Under special circumstances
a champion can request to defend
against a non-rated fighter but
the challenger must be ratable.
2- In the event that a champion
fights at a lower weight for a nonNABF approved bout and loses
he will be vacated.
3- The bylaws will include an exemption to voting delegate requirements under special circumstances.
4- The new NABF belt design
was accepted.
Our last speaker was
Jill Diamond who extended Female Championship thanks to Lee
Peters, Sal Musumeci
and Jimmy Burchfield
as well as to our current
female champions and
their promoters. Jill’s
closing statement was
that TV doesn’t respect
and promote female
bouts.

Tragedy Strikes Boxing Family
June 27, 2008 (reported by fightnews.com)
On Friday, June 20, Adalaide Byrd, Nevada Boxing judge and wife of World Boxing Hall of Fame Referee, Robert
Byrd, received a call that her youngest brother, Aaron Tyndale, 44, of Pennsylvania had been in a terrible motor vehicle
accident and his condition was grave. Tyndale had been traveling from Virginia to his home in Philadelphia when his vehicle
was run off the road by a tractor-trailer on I-95 in Delaware. Eyewitnesses claim that Tyndale’s vehicle rolled over several
times. Byrd’s brother was able to speak briefly after the accident, but shortly after went into cardiac arrest and was taken to
Christiana Hospital in Newark, Delaware. As a result of the accident, Aaron Tyndale suffered several severe head injuries
and was pronounced brain dead at 4:50 AM on Saturday, June 21. Tyndale’s wishes were to be an organ donor, so at that
time the family gave permission for his organs to be removed. Mr. Tyndale led a healthy lifestyle and six of his organs were
perfectly healthy and viable for transplant.
Adalaide Byrd was proud of her youngest brother. “He accomplished so much in his 44 years, and he lived the life
of a 75-year old man,” passionately emphasized the Nevada boxing judge. Tyndale had been in the Air Force for 22 years
and retired as a Senior Master Sergeant. Aaron Tyndale will be buried with full military honors on Saturday, August 5, at Arlington
National Ceremony in Arlington, Virginia.
The NABF family wishes to extend its deepest sympathies to Adalaide Byrd and her family. Aaron Tyndale was the
youngest of five siblings. He is survived by his three sisters Faith, Dawn and Adalaide, his brother Mark and his mother,
Beatrice Tyndale.

NEVADA ADOPTS NEW GLOVE RULES
The Nevada State Athletic Commission has changed the unpopular
rule requiring 140- and 147-pounders to wear ten ounce gloves, rejoining the
rest of the world where fighters in those divisions wear eight ounce gloves.
The move will likely make the state more attractive for big fights at 140/147 lbs.
