Summer 2015 - Wood Hudson Cancer Research Laboratory
Summer 2015
Wood Hudson Presents Research at AACR
The American Association for Cancer Research prides itself on trying to cure cancer through research, education,
communication and collaboration. It is the largest scientific organization in the world that is focused on every
aspect of innovative cancer research. The AACR membership consists of more than 35,000 of the world’s leading
cancer researchers. Did you know that all of the scientists at Wood Hudson are members?
From April 18-23, 2015, the AACR held their annual meeting in Philadelphia, PA. The
annual meeting is comprised of many speakers, hundreds of talks and more than
6,000 presentations from scientists around the globe. About 19,000 members were in
attendance, including a few of our own scientists! The theme of this year’s meeting
was titled, “Bringing Cancer Discoveries to Patients”. The theme was chosen to
reinforce the fact that research is the underlying factor in the progress made toward
cancer cures. Representing Wood Hudson was our very own Dr. Alexandra Fajardo
presenting “Targeting PAK1 Activity in Breast Cancer; Inhibition of Cell Survival,
Motility, and Signaling”. (Hannah Graff, Kelly Kleier, Courtney McCall, Brad Meyer,
Kyle Neltner, Alex White, Tristan Browne, Dr. Larry Douglass, and Dr. Julia Carter
also contributed to this study.)
Special Thanks goes to LI-COR Biosciences in Lincoln, NE for the New C-DiGit Blot Scanner that Wood Hudson received
through a random drawing at the AACR meeting. This instrument was valued at nearly $5,000. Thanks, LI-COR!

Thanks to all Flying Pig contributors and local foundations for making
this summer’s Undergraduate Research Education Program (UREP)
possible! Wood Hudson Cancer Research Laboratory would like to
welcome: Rachel Bender (Capital University), Evan Birmingham
(UD), Adam Birkenhauer (NKU), Nolan Calhoun (Gatton-WKU),
Mariah Dooley (MSJ University), Ben Ellison (UK), Nick Grosser
(U of L), Katie Hagedorn (Thomas More College), Austin Johnson
(UK), Stefan Marasligiller (Vanderbilt), Gretchen Mueller (U of L),
Alex White (Miami-Ohio), and Alexandra Wright (Gatton-WKU).
Wood Hudson’s UREP gives students the chance to work in real
world situations and it gives them the opportunity to become better
scientists or doctors in the future.
Former UREP students starting Graduate or Medical
School this summer:
Jordan Jones, Kelly Kleier, Grant Lewis and Hannah Pennington

Wood Hudson Thanks Toyota for 7 Years of Support
Wood Hudson thanks the Toyota for a $3,200 grant in 2015 to be used for the UREP students, and for the
many years Toyota has supported Wood Hudson!
Each year Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky, Inc. (TMMK), honors their employees for their service to
the community through the Volunteers In Place Program. This year, Mr. David Burke, a Toyota employee
and a supporter of the Lab, was one of the Honorees. He named Wood Hudson as his award recipient
organization. The Recognition Dinner was held on Saturday, May, 9th at Malone’s Banquets in Lexington,
KY. Dr. Julia Carter and Georgia Kinman, representing Wood Hudson, were invited to attend this event in
support of Mr. Burke. Each Honoree presented information on the organizations with which they are
involved, giving updates of accomplishments and future goals. Mr. Wil James, President of TMMK,
acknowledged the time and talent Toyota employees give to the community. He personally thanked the
Honorees for their service. Mr. Burke was presented with a check for $1,500 for his community involvement.
He then presented the check to Dr. Julia Carter for the Undergraduate Research Education Program (UREP)
at Wood Hudson Cancer Research Laboratory. The Lab would
like to thank TMMK and Mr. David Burke not only for the
generous gift of $1,500 but also for inviting Wood Hudson
Cancer Research Laboratory to be a part of the Volunteers in
Place Program for 2014.
Ladies & Gentlemen, Start your Engines!
15th Annual Ft. Thomas Corvette Club Car Show—August 15, 2015
Wood Hudson is preparing for the 15th Annual Cancer
Research Benefit Car Show, hosted at the Hofbrauhaus and
put on every year since 2000 by the Ft. Thomas Corvette Club.
Every August, car enthusiasts get together to display their
vehicles and to show support for the research being done at
Wood Hudson. Thanks to the Ft. Thomas Corvette Club,
Hofbrauhaus and Wood Hudson, the car show has grown each
year and continues to showcase many memorable cars!
The car show will take place on August 15th, 2015 at the Hofbrauhaus parking lot (200 E. 3rd Street,
Newport, KY). Registration for car owners is from 9:00AM to 11:30AM, Judging begins at 12:00PM, and the
Trophy Ceremony will commence at 3:00PM. The event is open to ALL cars and trucks for an entry fee of
$20! In addition to being surrounded by cool cars, there will be a silent auction and a DJ to play your favorite
music all day long!
More importantly, ALL of the proceeds from this event benefit Wood Hudson’s Research and the
UREP! Wood Hudson depends on the support of benefits such as the car show, so we are asking that you
come out for a great day to help ensure that we can continue our work in cancer research!
Not a car-fanatic? No problem! The silent auction will have prizes that are guaranteed to interest you, and if
you get hungry you can grab a bite to eat at Hofbrauhaus, which will also be donating 25% of their sales
during the event! We hope to see you there!

Mission Statement
Wood Hudson Cancer Research Laboratory, Inc. is a professional, independent, not-for-profit, publicly supported,
research institute dedicated to the discovery of new knowledge regarding the causes, diagnosis, treatment, and
prevention of cancer. Because the Laboratory is a not-for-profit enterprise, no organization or individual profits
financially from its operation, and all discoveries resulting from ongoing research are freely given to the scientific
and medical community through promptly reported, peer-reviewed publications.
Wood Hudson approaches the cancer problem three ways:
1. Study of clinical cases and experimental models of cancer to learn new methods of cancer
prevention, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment
2. Study of environmental causes of cancer, particularly food and drinking water chemicals;
3. Provision of training and “hands-on” research experience for tomorrow’s scientists and
physicians through its Undergraduate Research Education Program (UREP)
