Closing Luncheon

12:00 pm Lunch
From the Manager
Dear TCC Family,
A
lthough mid-summer is upon us, there are plenty
of opportunities that remain for utilizing your club
this season. Golf has several months of viable play,
the pool is here to keep those hot summer days of August
at bay, tennis can be enjoyed well into the fall season and
of course dining is a year round experience. So take
advantage of all that Toledo Country Club has to offer.
Junior Sports programming was a success in 2014. Every
program grew in participation when compared to recent
years. The Swim Team Championships, Junior Tennis
Championships and Junior Golf programming all recently
came to a close at the end of July. If you would like to see
your children continue to hone their skills, lessons are still
available for each sport. Our junior boys and girls worked
hard and showed improvement throughout the season, all
while having fun, thanks to our coaching staff. Kaitlin
Hersch, Kristen Troyer, Brooke Edwards and Nick Brodie
did a great job getting our swim team in contention at
championships. Drew Violette, Neela Kelly, Connor
Majdalani and Eric Brown were outstanding at getting
our junior tennis players to be their best. Of course Don
“Couch” Kotnik, Eric Mason, Steve Weisenborn and
Brandon Nolan kept kids swinging in the practice areas
and on the golf course. Kudos to all our coaching staff for
their contributions this season.
On the financial front, the club is showing improvement
relative to budget. It is only through your involvement, as
members, that we can continue in this direction. Thank
you for your support in sponsoring events and members.
It is these actions that help the club to generate the
necessary overall net revenues to exceed expectations. The
club currently has some great opportunities this
upcoming holiday season for hosting your business’ party.
If you or someone you know has a desire to entertain
their management team, departmental staff, top clients,
associations, etc., please give us a call and we will be
happy to take care of all your arrangements. It is really
important that you know, we will work harder and
appreciate you more.
Be sure to check your newsletter for recaps of recent club
activities as well as upcoming events. I look forward to
seeing you at the club.
Best regards,
Carl J. Miller

Golf Greens Tips from Tim
“Why do we topdress our greens
with so much sand?”
T
he main reason is to dilute organic matter underneath the
surface. We have seen an increase in organic matter, since we
had to take it easy on our greens to recover from winter
damage this year, as well as the reduction in aerification this past
year. A rise in organic matter causes lower oxygen levels and
higher moisture levels in the rootzone, which slows water
infiltration causing softer greens and puddling. As a result, we
have been spiking to increase oxygen in the rootzone and sand
topdressing on a weekly basis to help dilute organic matter.
Topdressing is one of the most important cultural practices that
we can do on greens. It helps firm them up and speed them up.
The other cultural practice recommended by USGA for
controlling organic matter is aerification. To meet a minimum
requirement of 20% impact on the turf surface, we should be
aerifying at least three times a year.
We will need to continue topdressing and aerifying to reduce the
negative effects of organic matter. We will send out a notice if any
of these practices affect course playability.
If you have any questions or concerns please contact me at
419.382.8851 or [email protected].

Now that you know the fundamentals of chipping, all you have to do is execute. If you
want to be able to have a consistent short game, you must consistently practice it.
You should spend 1/3 of your practice time around the green chipping, pitching, and
hitting bunker shots. If you do this, you will shoot lower scores.
Score Well,
