Student incentive: Students receive
credit in their personal travel accounts for
every box of fruit that they sell. The more
fruit they sell, the larger the percentage
that goes into their account. It's a great
way to earn money to cover the cost of
travel and it carries over from year to
year. Freshmen musicians who may not
need funds for a trip this year will benefit
from having a head start on their savings
for future years
Website: See our website
at www.mhsfruitsale.org. It includes all the
information families need to have a
successful sale. There is a calendar of
dates and copies of flyers and price lists.
Payments: With over 300 students in the
Music Department, parents are asked to
have buyers write checks to them
directly. On Saturday, December 12th,
please bring one check made out to MHS
BOPA to pay for your entire order. No
money will be collected before that date.
Benefits of the sale: The MHS BOPA
Fruit Sale is the major fundraiser of the
year for the band and orchestra programs.
This annual sale is well received and
anticipated by the Middleton/Cross Plains
community. Funds raised provide critical
support for the music programs. Proceeds
go to pay for guest artists, clinicians,
transportation, accompanists and summer
music camp scholarships. If your student is
unable to participate in this fundraiser,
please consider a tax-deductible
contribution.
Delivery Day: Saturday, December 12th,
starting at 9:00 a.m. Orders over $800
should not be picked up until 10:45 a.m.
Large orders will be set aside and ready
to go at that time. Please consider
volunteering on Delivery Day. Check out
the SignUp Genius at:
www.SignUpGenius.com/go/60B094BAC
A62AAB9-2015. Students will sign up
with the music teachers. We promise fun,
donuts, and coffee.

concert of the KMS area elementary
and middle school students. The next
night, on 11/17, the Cardinal Orchestra
will round out the concert of the GCMS
half. Then on Thursday 11/19, the
orchestras will present their full
concert. The Cardinal Orchestra will
perform works by Meyer, Spata,
Mozart, and Tchaikovsky. Philomusica
will perform 2 of its eclectic works, and
the Symphony Orchestra will present a
powerful set of emotional works.
Beginning with the Beethoven Egmont
Overture, the concert will center around
the award-winning Threnody for Victims
of Hiroshima by Pendercki, a work using
modern sounds and notation. Following
this will be the poignant "Adagietto" from
the Mahler Symphony No.5 and the
"Berceuse & Finale" from Stravinsky's
Firebird Suite. All musicians will combine
at the end to perform the Russian Sailors'
Dance by Gliere. Free and open to the
public with a reception afterward--please
come and hear us!

MHS Jazz Ensembles Up & Running
The award winning MHS Jazz Ensembles were selected by audition in September
and are now into their first few weeks of preparation for the January Jazz Cabaret.
Every Monday & Tuesday night, the band room is alive with the great sounds of big
band jazz. Six O’Clock Jazz meets at 6:00 on Mondays. Seven O’Clock Jazz meets
at 7:30 on Mondays and we’re proud to announce the addition of a third
extracurricular jazz band this year. The addition of the 5 O’clock Jazz Band (meeting
at 6 O’Clock on Tuesday….we are aware that it makes no sense) will bring the Jazz
program to 86 members strong, the largest it has ever been. This third band will
allow for all interested students, despite ability or background knowledge, to have an
outlet to explore the jazz medium. We look forward to hearing them in performance
soon.

Concerto-Aria Auditions
The 16th Annual Concerto-Aria
Competition is coming up on January 12,
but it is not too soon to start thinking about
it. Any MHS musician can audition to solo
in a March concert with the Symphony
Orchestra. Details and application will be
available in the Orchestra Room some time
in November and apps are due before
Winter Break. A great experience, a
practice audition for college or another
competition, professional judges with free
feedback, and the chance to solo.

State Honors Ensembles News
On October 29th, nineteen MHS
Students will participate in the
Wisconsin State Honors Ensembles.
These groups are chosen by audition in
February, rehearse at UW-Green Bay in
June, and then conveniently reconvene
rehearsals at MHS in October before
they perform at the Overture Center for
the State Music Conference. Nationally
known guest directors conduct the
groups.
Faceboook.com/MHS.BOPA
This is a great program and learning
experience that advanced musicians
should consider trying. 2016 Honors
audition applications are available
online at wsmamusic.org. Registration
for the 2016 season begins on
November 1st 2015. The deadline for
2015 applications is 11:59 p.m on Dec.
4th. Late applications will not be
considered. The auditions themselves
occur on February 6th or 13th, 2016.
The February 13th auditions are held at
MHS.

New Work Commissioned for
Philomusica
Philomusica is excited to be involved in a project for a new composition.
We have commissioned nationally-known and beloved composer Richard
Meyer to write a piece just for us. The new novelty work will be completed
by January and premiered on May 17 at the 4th & 5th grade concert. The
piece will be published in the summer of 2016 with a dedication to our
ensemble. We are also hoping for a Skype conference with the composer,
who is a long-time favorite of our students.
Pep Band
Pep Band is being run slightly differently this year. Every student within the MHS Band program has been divided into 4
equally sized groups. Each group is assigned 3 performances throughout the year, this allows for the Pep Band to have a
more committed schedule without that time commitment being added to your student’s extracurricular schedule. We
understand that the process of assigning games could create conflicts so any students that see potential conflicts in the
Pep Band schedule can switch games with any other student in the same row as their name on the Pep Band Roster
(See Page 9). Please add these dates to your calendar as we look forward to an exciting and fruitful Pep Band season.
Small Group Instruction for Band
We have some exciting changes to small group instruction this year. Thanks to a great initiative from Mr. Brown and
partial funding from BOPA, we have been able to hire specialists on each instrument to work with students on a weekly
basis. These instructors will teach playing fundamentals and small ensemble music with instrument-specific experience.
Small group meets primarily during either ASR or study hall ("advisory" on non-advisory days). Each student received a
schedule and list of dates. This is an incredible opportunity for students.
Mr. Brown will lead small group instruction for percussion and Mr. VerVoort will lead small group instruction for trumpet.
The additional faculty are Dan Wallach, Saxophone; Pedro Garcia, Clarinet; Joseph Greer, Trombone; Sarah Gillespie,
French Horn; and Danielle Breisach, Flute. Their biographies and photos follow.
Dan Wallach
Daniel Wallach received his BM and MM degrees from UW-Madison under the
instruction of Les Thimmig. Daniel has studied jazz with George Garzone, Steve
Duke, Dave Pike, Greg Keel, Bill Sears, and Richard Davis. He has also studied
concert saxophone with Daniel Stewart, Emeritus Professor of Winds at UW-Stevens
Point. While attending UW-Madison, Daniel played lead alto sax in its Jazz
Ensemble One and principal saxophone in Symphonic Band under the direction of
James Smith. He has been a soloist with the UW-Madison Symphony Orchestra
under the direction of David Becker and the Madison Symphony under the direction
of John DeMain. Daniel is currently the professor of saxophone, director of the Jazz
Ensemble, and instructor of Jazz History, Saxophone Quartet, and the Jazz Combo
at Edgewood College. He has performed with the Temptations and shared the stage
with Chick Corea, Maceo Parker, Tower of Power, War, and Morris Day and the
Time. His former band Phat Phunktion has been featured as the house band on an
episode of the Jenny Jones talk show. Daniel has been a frequent performer at the
Isthmus Jazz Festival and other festivals throughout the country. He is an active
educator, teaching saxophone and jazz improvisation throughout the Midwest.

Pedro Garcia
Joseph Greer
Pedro Garcia, from Frisco, TX, recently graduated from
UW-Madison with his Masters in Clarinet Performance.
While at the University, Pedro performed with both the
Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra as a principal
player in both groups, along with numerous small
ensembles. Originally from Frisco, TX, Pedro has
created private studios back home as well as in the
Madison area, teaching students of all skill levels and
ages. His teachers include Dr. James Gillespie, Dr.
Kimberly Cole-Luevano, and Dr. Linda Bartley.
Born in 1984, Dr. Joseph Greer grew up in Gladwin,
Michigan, where he began playing trombone in the sixth
grade. After graduating with his Bachelor of Music
Education degree from Central Michigan University in 2010,
Dr.Greer moved to Wisconsin and earned his M.M. and
D.M.A in trombone performance from the University of
Wisconsin-Madison in 2012, and 2015 respectively. In
addition to teaching his private students, Dr. Greer has
taught small group lessons in public schools, and coached
brass sectionals for the Wisconsin Youth Symphony
Orchestras. Furthermore, he is principal trombone of the La
Crosse Symphony Orchestra. When not teaching and
performing, Joseph enjoys spending time with his wife and
walking their dog.
Sarah Gillespie
Sarah Gillespie is a native of Bossier City, LA. She is a candidate for
the D.M.A. at UW-Madison with a minor in Vocal Performance.
Sarah graduated from the UW with her M.M. in Horn Performance in
2009 and continues to live, play, and teach in the Madison area.
Last year, Sarah taught applied horn lessons at UW-Rock County.
She currently hosts a private studio of 20 school aged and adult
students who attain high scores at the WSMA Solo and Ensemble
festival at the district and state levels and are members in
prestigious, auditioned ensembles such as the Wisconsin Youth
Symphony Orchestra and Winds of Wisconsin. She received her
Bachelor of Music Performance and Bachelor of Music Education
from Louisiana State University. Sarah performs with the La Crosse
Symphony Orchestra and the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra. Other
appearances include con vivo! Chamber Ensemble, the National
Women’s Music Festival, Madison Savoyards, Four Seasons
Theater, Middleton Players Theater, and other chamber groups
including the Odyssey Wind Quintet. When she’s not performing or
teaching, Sarah might be found biking around the Madison area,
cooking Creole cuisine, or singing alto in the Cathedral Parish choir.
The Whole Note
Danielle Breisach
Danielle Breisach’s exuberance and compassion permeate her
performing and teaching. Danielle maintains a private studio of over 30
highly successful students. Currently, Danielle is a doctoral student ABD
at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Flute Performance. In addition
to modern flute, she is a baroque flute specialist. She has performed
with several organizations in Michigan and Wisconsin including the
Kalamazoo Philharmonia, the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, and
many others. She has been a concerto soloist with the Western
Michigan University Symphony Orchestra. Previously, Danielle taught at
Western Michigan University, where she received a B.M. in Music
Education (’07) and M.M. in Music Performance (’09). Danielle lives in
Madison, WI with her husband Jeff and their two dogs and three cats.
Danielle is working towards completing her D.M.A. at UW-Madison, is
the Artistic Director of the Madison Flute Club, participates on the
planning committee for the Wisconsin Flute Festival, and founded the
Middle and High School Flute Ensembles in 2013, giving young
Madison-area flutists the opportunity to collaborate with one another and
gain experience on auxiliary instruments. In her free time, she enjoys
traveling to Bay View, MI, kayaking, hiking, and reading. You can learn
more about Danielle at www.daniellebreisach.com.
Program Ad Sales
In an effort to find continued support for the MHS Band and Orchestra Programs while looking to increase the professional
appearance of our concerts we would like to announce our 2015-2016 Program Add Sales Fundraiser. This Fundraiser will
not only allow local business and patrons to place an ad within our 10 Concert 2015-2016 Band and Orchestra Program, but
also create a professional style souvenir program for students and families. Add space is sold by the size and more
information can be seen on the attached 2-page form at the end of this newsletter. This is the perfect opportunity for you to
highlight your business, or give a special congratulation to your student, or commemorate a senior year with a picture and
message. Please feel free to approach local businesses as all proceeds go to MHS BOPA to help create a more
comprehensive music experience for your children.
Volunteers Needed!
Sincere thanks to the many generous parents who completed the BOPA Committees and Volunteers Sign-Up Sheet. We
are in need of additional help. A volunteer sign up sheet appears toward the end of this newsletter. Please complete and
return it to your student's band or orchestra teacher, or let Margo Hoover-Regan ([email protected],
608-332-6386) or Laurel Romer ([email protected]) know how you can help. We are happy to have volunteers for
ALL events and roles, but there was little to no response to requests for help in the following areas:

Information About Your Donation
In thanks for your tax deductable donation (less the fair market value of the add) to the Middleton High School
Band and Orchestra Parents Association the MHS BOPA will present an advertisement of your choosing in our
2015-2016 concert program as well as list you/company in the program’s index of donors. Your advertisement
will be seen by community members, alumni, as well as the families and friends of the over 500-student
performers ranging in age from 9th-12th grade. The Advertisements will run in each of the 10 concert programs*
that will feature not only students from MHS but Madison West, Madison East, as well as the University of
Wisconsin Madison. Your contribution helps us continue to develop and expand great music education
opportunities at MHS and shows your commitment to a program with deep roots in the Middleton Cross-Plains
community.
