The CHS Key Club teamed up with Pinnacle Bank to honor our local troops this year
for Christmas. Key Club put together a “Battle of the Advisement Rooms” for the
ultimate prize of a pizza party. The advisement rooms were asked to help collect
donation items that could be put together into a care package for our local troops this
Christmas. The high school collected a total of 124 items, with Mr. Bubak’s class
taking the prize! Keri Schnell, Mortgage Loan Officer at Pinnacle Bank said that
the Key Club “students did a great job collecting.” We sincerely want to thank them
for helping with this project. A total of 15 Key Club members helped Pinnacle Bank
pack the boxes to be shipped to Columbus loved ones away in the military.
The Key Club leadership recently had the opportunity to be volunteer servers at the
Columbus Cancer Care benefit. Following the event, representatives from the
Columbus Cancer Care organization expressed their appreciation of the Key Club by
indicating that they did not know what they would have done without the help of the
Key Club organization. Other activities this fall for the Key Club have included
setting up booths for the CHS career fair and teaming with the CPS Foundation in
sharing a trunk at the annual Trunk or Treat event on Halloween. The work of the
Key Club membership is truly appreciated as they continue to exemplify the true
Discoverer Way spirit in “Discovering Something Greater Than Themselves”
through service to others.
“This amazing group of high school student leaders, personally has amazed me.
When our community reaches out to them for help they show up in numbers and
work hard as a team. They also put their brains together and come up with their own
projects to help kids in our community. Together they achieve so much, and we are
so lucky to get to be a part of it.” Carly Whitney and Christine Morse, Advisors

packet, they need to see Mrs. Kamrath
for a replacement.
There will be tryouts in the spring for
graduation speeches. More information,
concerning speech tryouts, will follow at
a later date. Graduation is set for 3:00

From Ms. Leifeld, Assistant Principal
Co-teaching at the high school is still in its beginning stages. This year we have several teachers involved in three of the four core areas. For the
past two summers teachers at all grade levels have attended training in the summer working on instructional strategies and engagement activities that
will enhance learning for all students.
Co-teaching provides all students with access to grade level curriculum. The benefits of co-teaching include: more time on task for all students,
increased opportunities for student response, participation and questions within a class period, while allowing the teacher to customize learning and
rigor for all students. This teaching model is designed to support and enrich students through differentiation in instruction. At the secondary level,
we do not modify curriculum, we just modify instruction so that all students will be able to grow as learners.
I would like to recognize and thank the following teachers for their commitment to the co-teaching model and their students.
In the Math Department, co-teaching is provided in Algebra, Basic Algebra II, and Basic Geometry.

In English, co-taught classes are provided at each grade level. We also provide an intervention period to provide extended time to students in special
education. The intervention class is taught by the Special Education teacher to support and extend the learning opportunities needed for all students
to be successful.

Important reminder for mid-term graduates: As we come to the close of first semester, it is imperative for all seniors graduating at mid-term to
take care of a few housekeeping items. Seniors must have met the attendance requirements for the semester. All disciplinary and tardy minutes need
to be cleared and all classes must be completed with a passing grade. Finally, please let the guidance office know your plans in regards to walking at
graduation. If any of the requirements are a concern, students need to set up a meeting with Ms. Leifeld prior to the final day of the semester which is
December 22.
From Ms. Kamrath, Nurse
Did everybody in your family get a flu shot? 50,000 people die
from viral influenza every year. Everybody needs to be
immunized to prevent us from having a bad flu season at school.
There are lots of clinics all over town giving flu shots. Your own
health care provider can give your family the vaccination they
need. If paying for the vaccine is an issue, please contact the East
Central District Health department at 402-562-7500 or
402-563-9224
Cold and flu season is right around the corner so having hand
sanitizer in your child's bookbag would be a very good idea this
winter. I will do my best to remind them to stop sharing pop,
chapstick, and food.
Thanksgiving Basket Project
The Columbus High School Chapter of the National Honor
Society has recently completed its annual Thanksgiving Basket
Project. This project is designed to make the lives of families in
need at CHS a bit merrier this holiday season. The 64 current
members of NHS were asked to bring in non-perishable food
items that they can personally purchase or collect from
community members. In addition, NHS members were asked to
raise money to purchase gift cards that the recipient families
could use to buy perishable food items or gas for holiday travel.
These nonperishable food items are distributed with $20 gift
cards to each family the week of Thanksgiving. Not only does
the Thanksgiving Basket Project bring joy to the families in need
but it also proves to be a powerful service opportunity for the
students in the Discoverer Chapter of the National Honor
Society.

Prepare for the FAFSA with free programs and resources
Juniors and seniors…it’s time to start preparing for the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)!
Seniors, you’ll need to complete the form after January 1 but before the college’s priority date (typically
March 1 or April 1) to apply for federal, state and college-based financial aid. Juniors, you’ll want to start
learning about the FAFSA now as changes are happening with the form next year.
To learn about the FAFSA, take advantage of these free EducationQuest programs and resources:
Financial Aid Programs
Attend a Financial Aid Program with a parent or guardian to learn about the financial aid process and the
FAFSA. The programs are free and open to the public. If you attend, you will be eligible to register for
a $500 Financial Aid Program Scholarship!

Winning the scholarship game
Follow these tips to increase your chances of earning scholarships:
Don’t ever pay for scholarship searches! Use free resources such as ScholarshipQuest at
EducationQuest.org with over 2,000 Nebraska-based scholarships. Free national sites include Fastaid,
ScholarshipExperts.com, School Soup, and Scholarships.com.
Visit your school counselor often for information about local scholarships.
Focus on local and college-specific scholarships because you're more likely to earn them.
Update your activities, honors, community service or paid jobs using the Activities Resume at
EducationQuest.org.
Earn the best possible ACT/SAT scores by taking the exam in the spring of your junior year and again
in the fall of your senior year.
Use quality references such as a teacher, coach or counselor. Encourage them to write specific
examples of your leadership skills. Give them advance notice and a specific deadline.
Tailor your essay to the scholarship. Ask an English teacher to read your essay and offer advice on
making a big impact. Your essay will need to stand out from other applications.
