Beyond Sixty Fall 2008 Letter from the Director Dear Brandcenter Alumni, I hope you had a great summer. It was good to see many of you during Advertising Week in New York. The new school year has been a busy one for the Brandcenter, and I hope you enjoy reading what’s been going on the last few months. This past May, the Brandcenter graduated eighty-five students in the Class of 2008 to start their careers in agencies and companies around the world. Before they left, they were honored in the One Show, the ADC Show, the Richmond Show, D&AD, and CMYK. The Class of 2009 also made a strong contribution to the student awards, including the Cannes Future Lions awards, and they are gearing up for this year’s competitions. It was not as quiet as usual over the summer, with the Brandcenter hosting its third Executive Education program for Creative Direction and its first ever Executive Education program for Creative Brand Management.We also continued our custom Exec Ed program for Dentsu in Japan. Peter Coughter and I spent three weeks in Tokyo where the attendees called Peter “the largest man they’d ever seen.” I encourage everyone to look into these programs next summer as we have gotten incredible feedback from all participants, including several alums. This fall, we welcomed ninety-four students in the Brandcenter Class of 2010. Eleven of these students make up the Brandcenter’s first class of Creative Technologists. We are happy to have Professor Mark Avnet leading our newest track, which prepares students to create and execute branding in the digital space. The curriculum for Creative Technology was created with the help of Brandcenter board member Bob Greenberg and Nick Law of R/GA, Paul Seward of The Martin Agency, and other industry leaders from the digital and interactive spheres. Please stay connected and keep us updated with your lives and accomplishments. We love hearing from you and hope you can come back to visit us in the new space. Best, Rick Boyko / Director Breaking News VCU Brandcenter Graduates 11th Class of Students On Saturday, May 17th, the Brandcenter graduated its 11th class of students including 22 art directors, 23 creative brand managers, 21 communications strategists and 19 copywriters. The ceremony and reception were held in the auditorium of the Virginia Historical Society in the fan. David Droga, Founder and Creative Chairman of Droga5, was the guest speaker. David was an inspiration to the grads, telling them to work hard for what they love, not for the dollar. David shared his experiences working on pro bono campaigns, including the Tap Project in partnership with UNICEF. Rick Boyko’s “Building Global Brands” class developed and managed a campaign for the Richmond Tap Project last spring. 75% of our May graduates have already taken jobs at agencies/companies around the country including AKQA, Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, R/GA, Venables Bell, BBDO, TBWA\Chiat\Day, Wieden + Kennedy, Droga 5, Gotham, Jack Morton, Martin, Cutwater, Publicis, Y&R, Crispin, Porter + Bogusky, Nike, Good magazine, and Mars/Masterfood, among others. This is ahead of our past job placement rate, which is impressive given the tough economic environment. Student Awards: And the winner is… The VCU Brandcenter ended the 2008 school year with a bang when it came to awards shows. Last spring we had finalists in the One Show, the One Show Client Pitch Competition and the Art Director’s Club Awards. The One Show awarded first years Raquel Giminez, AD, Tony Collins, CW, and Jake Dubs, CW a bronze pencil for their Doritos commercial. Tor Weeks (AD, 2008) and Gaurav De (CW, 2008) beat out a team of Brandcenter first years for first place in the One Show Client Pitch Competition. The Art Director’s Club awarded Karen Land (AD, 2008) and Nick Kaplan (CW, 2008) a Silver Cube for their Random House Books on Tape campaign. Each year the Cannes Future Lions Competition challenges students to develop an idea for advertising a global brand in a way that would not have been possible five years ago. Only five concepts were awarded at the Cannes festival in May. We are honored that two of those awards went to Brandcenter students in the class of 2009: JD Humphreys, AD, and the team of Mollie Partesotti, CS, and Jeremy Claud, AD. Charles Hodges (CW, 2009) won the Style Weekly Short Fiction Contest last year. His winning story as well as a runner-up story he wrote were both published in Style Weekly last May. The Brandcenter nearly swept the Richmond Show with two Gold cannonballs, two Silvers, five Bronzes and a Best in Show for the WaterAid non-traditional campaign by Dan Case (AD, 2008) and Michael Collier (CW, 2008). D&AD selected a campaign for the Ogilvy Brief “If I’d Only Listened More Carefully,” by Candice Anderson (AD, 2008) and current student Kris Kennedy, CW, for publication in the 2008 D&AD Student Awards Annual. The Brandcenter had a remarkable showing in the two recent CMYK competitions. Entries by four Brandcenter teams were selected for publication in CMYK #41: Jillian Dresser (AD, 2008) and Nick Kaplan (CW, 2008) for Alliance for Climate Protection; Karen Land (AD 2008) and Nick Kaplan for RandomHouse Books on Tape; Karen Land and Michael Flannery (CW, 2008) for JB Weld Glue; and Jillian Dresser and Latasha Ewell (CW, 2008) for Fanta, which was the cover of the issue. Work for Maaco by JD Humphreys (AD, 2009) and Amanda Burgan (CW, 2009) was selected for publication in CMYK #42, due to hit newsstands in November. Also published in CMYK #42 is a campaign for Raisin Bran by Sue Kim (AD ,2008) and Kasey Foster (CW, 2008). The CMYK blog at cmykmag.com features the winning campaign as well as an interview with Sue and Kasey. Students Selected to Intern at Great Agencies and Companies Over the Summer This past summer, VCU Brandcenter students interned at great agencies and companies like BBDO, BBH, Brooklyn Brothers, Butler Shine Stern & Partners, Crispin, Porter + Bogusky, DDB, Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, JWT, McKinney, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Mother London, Naked, R/GA, The Richards Group, TBWA/Chiat/DAY, The Martin Agency, and Venables Bell, among many others. Thank you to the many alums, who not only encouraged their agencies to sponsor our interns but also mentored our students throughout the summer. Summer Executive Education Programs A Huge Success The Brandcenter held two Executive Education Programs this summer, one for Creative Directors and the other for Brand Managers. Our Creative Director program was an intense week-long workshop designed for working Creative Directors. It was held in June with a sold out program of 32 attendees from agencies like Leo Burnett, McCann-Erickson, Jack Morton Worldwide, and R/GA. Workshops were led by industry leaders, Brandcenter board members and faculty including: Brian Collins, Collins:; Mike Hughes, The Martin Agency; and Mike Shine & Patrick Kiss, Butler Shine Stern & Partners. In August, we held our first ever Creative Brand Management Executive Education Program for brand managers, agency account leaders and brand strategists. We had an outstanding showing of 20 attendees from companies like Johnson & Johnson, Columbian Coffee Federation, and MeadWestvaco. We hosted guest speakers such as Nancy Vonk and Janet Kestin, Ogilvy Toronto; Nancy Hill, AAAA; and Jon Kamen, @Radical Media. For the third summer, Dentsu, Japan’s largest advertising agency, hired the Brandcenter to lead So-Hatsu, a two-week program for 30 of their employees. The program was designed to build a strong commitment to collaboration and creativity. So-Hatsu was led by Rick Boyko, Peter Coughter and Andrew Jaffe (Brandcenter board member) and took place from July 7-18. VCU Brandcenter Welcomes Class of 2010 Our new student orientation was held at the Brandcenter building on August 19th. The incoming class of 94 students includes 23 art directors, 17 creative brand managers, 21 communications strategists, 22 copywriters, and 11 creative technologists (students in our newest track – read about it below). The class of 2010 is 55% female, 70% out-of-state, 26% minority students, and 10% international students. Creative Technology, Our Newest Track In response to the industry’s request for graduates who have “digital DNA” and are also experts in the traditional aspects of advertising, the Brandcenter started the Creative Technology (CT) track this semester. As with the other 4 tracks, students enrolled in the CT track take all the core curriculum classes and focus on collaboration and group work. CT students understand that all modern communication happens in the context of technology. And they know that creativity doesn’t just mean words and images, and that the best ideas often come from the people who can put all the pieces together. CTs work as leaders and members of expanded creative teams in agencies and production companies, as interactive designers, creative directors, producers, as directors of interactive media, as members of account teams, as entrepreneurs, as digital and interactive generalists, and in new “creative technology” positions emerging in forward-thinking agencies. New Building Features Media Wall At the end of August, phase one of the Brandcenter’s new media wall went live in the lobby of the new building. A vision of Director Rick Boyko, the wall was designed by Lauren Lepper of Richmond company Home Media and implemented and installed by Home Media and R/GA. The wall is a place to showcase student and alumni work on all possible mediums. Pictures of phase 1 are below and installation of phase 2 (including cell phones, handheld gaming devices, etc.) will begin shortly and should be completed by year’s end. VCU Brandcenter Friday Forum Our Friday speaker series continues to draw fascinating speakers from all disciplines to engage the Brandcenter students. Located in the VCU Student Commons Theater, the Brandcenter Friday Forum also attracts many undergraduate students as well as professionals from the VCU and Richmond creative communities. This fall the Friday Forum has drawn speakers such as Benjamin Palmer and Rick Webb of The Barbarian Group; Jakob Trollbäck of Trollbäck + Company; Paul Parton and Guy Barnett of The Brooklyn Brothers. In addition to those industry luminaries, we were honored to welcome Jim Riswold, legendary Wieden + Kennedy copywriter and artist, who discussed his most famous campaigns for Nike and shared his art exhibit “Hitler Saved My Life,” which chronicled his recent cancer diagnosis and how he channelled his energy and creative spirit into art. Still to come this semester are Bill Bruce, Creative Director at BBDO NY; Rebecca Van Dyck, Worldwide Advertising Director at Apple; and John Hegarty, legendary art director and co-founder of BBH. Jim Riswold Advertising Week in New York City On September 22nd, Rick Boyko hosted a program for inner city high school students during Advertising Week in NYC. The purpose of the forum was to open their eyes to the possibilities of pursuing a career in advertising or marketing. This is the 3rd year Rick has hosted this program. As part of the program, Rick facilitated a panel discussion on careers in advertising with several of our minority alumni: Emanuel Basnight (CS, 2004), Brooke-Lynn Luat (CS, 2004), Felix Yip (CS, 2006), Zoe Bell (CW, 2008), and Edwin McClure (CS, 2009). They spoke about how they got into advertising, what it’s been like so far, and gave advice for students considering advertising as a career. On September 24th, Wieden + Kennedy NY and Big River Advertising hosted an alumni cocktail party at BB King’s. Over 60 alums attended the event. It was great to catch up with everyone. We plan to do future alumni events in Chicago and San Francisco. If you have suggestions for agencies or companies that might be willing to sponsor the event, please let Ashley Sommardahl know. It’s a great opportunity for an agency or company to network and recruit our alums in that area. Generally, the cost for an event is less than $5,000 so it’s an inexpensive way to get to know our talented alumni. Brandcenter Students Dominate MBA Innovation Challenge Competition Business students from around the world will come to the University of Virginia Darden School for the final round of the 6th annual Innovation Challenge set for Nov. 20-22. They’ll be competing for the title of “Most Innovative MBA School.” The Brandcenter is proud to announce that four of our teams made it to the semifinals and one team has made it to the finals. The contest gives business students an opportunity to devise solutions to real-world problems posed by the corporate sponsors. Student teams develop effective plans for helping companies meet specific challenges. A panel of independent judges then evaluates each plan. A sample question from an earlier competition: “How might Sprint create an innovative product or service, greatly increasing the subscriber’s quality of life, using Wide Area Wireless High Speed technologies?” This year, 264 teams from 55 business schools including Kellogg, UCLA, Harvard, Coumbia, Wharton, and The Indian School of Business are competing in Innovation Challenge. There are 1,140 contestants representing 48 countries. As many of you know from experience, Brandcenter students work on the Innovation Challenge competition as part of Professor Don Just’s Business of Branding course. We’re very proud of the success he and his students have achieved, and we’ll keep you posted on the results of the competition. The semi-finalist teams are below. The finalist team is in red. Mark is teaching two courses, Information Architecture and Creative Computational Media. He has many years in the industry at places such as @radical media, Hearst New Media, and Lot21 Interactive Marketing. Mark has taught at numerous schools including New York University, Marist College and served as Chair of Communications and Information Design at The Sage Colleges. Mark is a certified clinical hypnotherapist and also has a consulting company, Converging Arts. Rick Boyko was named the Dean of the Roger Hatchuel Academy at the International Advertising Festival in Cannes. The Roger Hatchuel Academy is a training and educational program for 35 outstanding advertising students from around the world. While attending the week-long festival, the students were taught by Rick and other industry leaders. Dean Collins joined us at the end of April as the new Network Analyst. He came from University of Richmond where he worked in Information Technology. He has also worked at Henrico Public Schools and a small marketing firm. Dean also enjoys playing the drums, hockey, and getting harassed by students all day long. 60 Seconds Patrick Maravilla / Crispin, Porter + Bogusky / CW, 2007 How’s Crispin? In a word, insane. Have you have any interaction with other alums or Brandcenter interns? I chat with David Byrd. And Diana Brost. But there aren’t many alums here other than us. I try to talk to interns when I can and if we have them. But they’re kept pretty busy. I do keep in touch with other students from my class though. See where they ended up. If they like it, etc. But every now and then I bump into an alum from a while ago and they ask if Coz is still there. I reassure them he was when I was there and he was still screaming. Do you have a favorite campaign? Can you tell us a bit about your experience working on it? I’ve been working on a lot of Coke Zero and Microsoft. It’s fun because both want to do great work. We shot a campaign for Coke Zero that was insane. 5 spots in one day. It was an all day, all night kinda shoot. We only had one shoot day so we had to cram in as much as we could. It was intense and awesome and exhausting. What do you do when you’re stumped? What do you do for inspiration? I play guitar hero. Or I play with my kids. Unless there’s a deadline. Then I suck it up and get the work done. What’s the one thing you never did while at the Brandcenter that you wish you had? I wish I would have taken in more of the sites in Richmond. Edgar Allen Poe museum. Confederate capital. There was so much history there that I never really took advantage of because I was so focused on school. I think my book would’ve been better if had I stopped and smelled the roses a bit more, instead of smelling that stinky green couch in the old building. Anything else you’d like to share? Sheeze. I’ve retyped the answer to this question a hundred times. And I still am not happy with anything I’ve come up with. So, no. There’s nothing else I’d like to share. When? • Cliff Adams (CS, 2007) and his partner at Team One were finalists in the Pick of the Litter competition at the AAAA Account Planning Conference. The competition spotlights the work of the younger members of the account planning community, those with less than three years of experience in the discipline. • Luisa Alba (CS, 2005) is the Manager of Insight and Strategy at Moses Anshell. • Raqib Ali Sheikh (CS, 2006) is a Brand Strategist at DialHouse in San Francisco. • Tim Anderson (CS, 1999) is a Planning Director at David & Goliath. • Walt Barron (CS, 2002) was named a VP at McKinney in Durham, NC. • John Benedict (CW, 2005) is a Copywriter at Crispin Porter + Bogusky in Boulder. • Anu Bhoopathy (CS, 2005) is an Account Supervisor for the Health Technologies Group at Cossette Communications in NYC. • Geoffrey Blair (CBM, 2008) is an Associate Planner at Razorfish in NYC. • Forrest Boleyn (CW, 2008), Steve Yee (AD, 2000), and Sean Ohlenkamp (Saatchi) made Palinaspresident.com public October 14, 2008 around 10 AM. In the first 24 hours they had more than 500,000 hits. The next day Sean was on CNN, Steve spoke with a local radio station, and Forrest had an interview with the Washington Post.com.They reached number one on both Digg.com and Reddit. com. Because of high traffic, they had to put a temporary redirect on the site to keep it from crashing. They’ve had more than 10 million hits from more than 99 countries. They have daily updates planned so make sure to check out the site. • Diana Brost (CW, 2008) is a Copywriter at Crispin Porter + Bogusky in Boulder. • Marcus Brown (AD, 2008) and Alex Grinton (CW, 2008) are working at BBDO West. • Luis Carranza (CBM, 2008) is a Digital Strategist for Iris Digital in London. He works on global campaigns for brands like Powerade, Sony Ericsson, and Adidas. • Greg Christensen (CW, 2000) was working as a Writer at Y&R Chicago and transferred to Y&R Geneva this past summer. • Caitlin Cody (CS, 2008) is an Associate Planner at DraftFCB in Chicago. • Alison Daly (AD, 2005) is working as a freelance art director. She’s working on an opportunity for an ice cream company in the US, which is opening a store in Huye, Rwanda. The company will employ mostly women, to create sustainable jobs for women, teaching them how to do everything from how to make the ice cream to how to operate the store on a day-to-day basis. It’s also about celebrating the small joys in life...giving kids a chance to enjoy an ice cream cone from time to time and enjoy being a kid. • Will Dean (AD, 2004) and Robyn Gunn (CW, 2006) were married in October in Virginia Beach. • Julie DeRosa (AD, 2002) married Nick Krueger on June 21, 2008. Julie DeRosa & Nick Krueger Kristin Erwin & John Woodward • Kristin Erwin (CW, 1998) married John Woodward at Yeocomico Episcopal Church in Kinsale, VA, on May 3. They celebrated post-ceremony at The Commonwealth Club in Richmond with guests, including fellow class of ’98 alumni, David Austin, Mackie Blaylock and Meredith (Davis) Shields. Kristin was previously with The Martin Agency, and a partner of freeRadical, both in Richmond. She is currently a Senior Copywriter with Razorfish in Atlanta. John was previously director of economic development for the City of Richmond and is currently director of foreign investment for the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. • Rachel Everett (AD, 2001) recently worked on a multi-media campaign for Kohl’s. It involved multiple musicians (including Lenny Kravitz), was shot in three locations (LA, Toronto, and Prague) and featured 500 extras. You can check out the work at www.kohls.com/inspire. • Matt Fischvogt (CW, 2001) is a Creative Director at Mullen in Boston. • Joyce Forbes (CS, 2002) is a Planner at Berlin Cameron in NYC. • CJ Franzitta (CS, 2002) is engaged to Brenna Sinnott, a production editor at Simon & Schuster. He got on bended knee at sunset on the beach in Naples, Florida. CJ and Brenna intend to plan a May 2009 wedding as soon as they stop drinking champagne. • Elizabeth Gershman (AD, 2008) and Derek Szynal (CW, 2008) are working at Cutwater. • Jeff Gillette (CW, 2006) is working at Google’s new Creative Lab in NYC. • Andy Grayson (CS, 2003) and his wife, Kristen, had a little girl, Mary Grayson, on December 13, 2007. Earlier this year, Andy was promoted to Strategic Planning Director at Goodby, Silverstein, & Partners. Was releasted by BlueQ books and is available at amazon.com and Target. The fall issue of Wooooo Magazine will feature his interviews with skateboard legend Natas Kaupas and the heavy metal band Three Inches of Blood. This summer he has been studying with Glenn Earich at The Second City, Chicago. Todd is currently in development with a cable television network for an upcoming animated show that he co-created. • Brett Landry (CW, 2004) recently left David & Goliath to pursue freelance opportunities and to start his own eco-friendly dog toy company. • AJ Livsey (CS, 2008) is an Associate Planner at Element 79 in Chicago. • Brooke-Lynn Luat (CS, 2004) is a Senior Brand Strategist at Kirshenbaum Bond + Partners. • Katie MacDougall (CBM, 2008) is an Associate Product Marketing Manager at Logitech in Portland in the audio group. • Diana Magid (AD, 2000) is an ACD at Publicis West. • Prudence Roberts Milligan (CS, 2000) is an Account Supervisor at Euro RSCG Discovery in Richmond. • Krissie Morris (CS, 2006) and Kevin Rothermel (CS, 2006) were married on April 19, 2008 in Charlottesville, VA at the UVA Chapel. They’ve recently moved to San Francisco. Kevin is a Brand Planner at Eleven Inc. and Krissie is a Senior Marketing Manager at the University of California, Berkeley. • Chantal Panozzo (CW, 2003) is a Copywriter at McCann Erickson in Switzerland. • Jan Little Percival (CS, 1999) is a real estate agent at Citi Habitats in NYC.
