On the curbs and in the mountains, under a wave
or banging off a rail, it is happening today as if
there were no tomorrow.
Modart is not a mere ‘mode’ as in fashion, but rooted closer to ‘mode’
of transport, to the movement of creative energy and ideas into wellexecuted actions; into activism, art and raw investigations of media
aesthetics.
Modart Magazine launched in 2004, following acclaimed group
exhibitions in Munich, Germany featuring raw talents like Ed Templeton,
Natas Kaupas, Jim Avignon, Lance Mountain, Jeremy Fish, Andrew
Pommier and over 25 other artists attached to the skateboard, Graffiti,
or broader street art scenes.
From the first publication, Modart was widely perceived as a fresh and
informed voice for all forms of outsider or activist arts, and placed a
spotlight on creative talent within these communities, helping to
develop ideas, exhibitions and authentic documentation of attitudes,
art and experimentation.
Modart magazine is currently distributed across Europe.

in Motion /07/08
Modart is indeed about movement and we got the blisters to prove it. We’ve
got the pictures to prove it as well if you don’t want to see our feet.
Like the art and projects we present in the magazine, our scale of events is
pretty difficult to pigeonhole; curiosity leads to border crossings.
From partnered events, to producing massive exhibitions, presenting work at
the Scope Art Fair or putting on Modart parties … our feet have been moving
as we continue investigating the aesthetics of our lives.
Rock am Ring

Neasden Control Centre (UK)
Nürburg | Germany
82,000 fans flock to a small German town famous for speed and hosting
Germany’s largest music festival. Modart was upstairs in the VIP and
downstairs in the mud. Our first partnership with Suzuki, Modart worked with
Bo130 and Microbo to introduce the audience to the vulnerability of art.
SUZUKI BMX MASTERS
Cologne | Germany
2007
It rained. It poured. It was freezing as we set up installations in 3 construction
wagons and the VIP lounge. The event organizers, and this is an event with
loads of history, had no doubt that by opening day it would be 40 degrees
with sands whipping in from the Sahara. We thought they were crazy. In
fact, they were not wrong. Friday the sun rose, the heat nearly hurt and the
BMX Masters rocked. One of our favorite events from last year!

MTV Designerama
Berlin | Germany
2007
A beautiful historical building in Berlin would be the backdrop for Modart to welcome guests to MTV’s
annual Designerama show. While MTV should stop immediately with the reality programming, they do know
how to throw a wicked party and the fashion show was scorching as the volume seemed to keep going up.
To balance clean, crisp and sexy graphic styles, Modart offered a playful and rough introduction to the fun
with a special party gift for outgoing guests.

2nd hand SMOKE
Cologne | Germany
2007
An artist run colony of sculptures and studies in squatting and surveillance made a perfect host for a Modart exhibition.
When the flames got hot and the sun went low, the work was removed from the wall and the venue also served as the
ideal stomping grounds for an all night session.

Scope Art Fair,
Art Basel Miami beach
Miami | US
2007
We first met the crew from the Scope Art Fair as we covered it for Modart one year ago. Finally
a fair that left us fatigued for all the right reasons. We were honored when they showed us
the same appreciation by inviting us to share works from our artist at their coming events.
Vegas isn’t for you? Art Basel, Miami Beach … do it, at least once, and when the big fairs
leave you frustrated, just remember that in the scope of things, that’s what big institutions
usually do. No risk? Not interested.

Who Killed the Aesthetikers?
Mayrhofen | AUSTRIA
2008
Up in the mountains, Modart lived up to our creative motto theory, teaming up with the Aesthetiker
crew to create a half pipe paint bombing performance, with professional riders heaving paint balloons at
inverted stencils as they dropped in.
To find out, which icon killed the Aesthetikers (Money? Guns? A younger generation? Themselves?), Will Barras
worked off this creative action initiative to illustrate whatever stories he found in the paint smears. Sublime Fun!

2008
Round two at Scope. This time there was no boxing performance. Rumor has it that the
first purchase was made by Lance Armstrong. There were no yellow bracelets. After
earning acclaim in Miami, the Scope Art Fair took over the headlines in the big apple.
This time we started up Modart Happy Hour and while the bar wasn’t stoked that we
were giving away drinks, both our artists and ambience again had people smiling.

No New Enemies
at Les Nuits des Botaniques
BRUSSELS | BELGIUM
2008
Once again mixing visual sounds with music and putting art back into public spaces, Modart teamed up
with the No New Enemies network to put on a show that brought in nearly 10,000 guests in Brussels.
Old and young bombed the police with paint, celebrated the Black Sheep and played in the space as
No New Enemies spread some love in Brussels to the tune of great public appreciation.
When the head stops hurting … fill it again …
Modart recommends Scope art!!!
SCOPE, the cutting-edge contemporary art fair, returns for the second year
to Basel in a new venue, a 60,000 square foot glass pavilion situated on the
Rhine. Within walking distance of Art Basel 39, SCOPE will present its most
international fair yet, showcasing 85 galleries from all over the world.
SCOPE Basel 2008 exhibitors, special events, and curatorial programs amplify
the fair’s signal achievement: introducing artists, curators, and cutting-edge
galleries to new audiences internationally, making it the most comprehensive
destination for emerging art available anywhere.
