Please use this Wesley Memorial United N{ethodist Church will provide Sack Packs to our students who might be in need of food over the weekend. This is our fifth year to be involved with the Sack Pack program and WMUMC. The program will begin within the next week. On Sarurday, August 17 Rhonda Weeks (Administrative Assistant) was able to welcome her 4'h grandchild into the familv. Emmett Matthew Rumble was 8 lb. 1,0 oz.,22n.long. He is the 2"d son of Nolan andCara (\\'eeks) Rumble. On August 18, Amold N{emorial Elementary School was proud to host 35 volunteers from Lee University. These sfudents were taking part in Lee's Deke Day, a service day focused on local school campuses. Over 105 \'olunteer hours were given to Amold in the form of helping teachers with planning projects, beautihcation of the school, and exta scrubbing and cleaning around the building. Arnold wishes to thank all the wonderful volunteers for their time and effort. Additionally, Mr. Chai would like to thank the 11 members of the Arnold Faculty who gave up some time on Sunday evening to come to school and get some extra work done. We Are the One! Amold Memorial Elementary School is a proud participant in this years United Way Campaign. We had 3 major goals this vear. First, we asked that all faculty and staff members turn in their forms and we were successful in that. Second, we wanted to have at least 95o/o parncipation. We succeeded in this area as well with 98% participation. Third, we had a goal to improve over our gning of $3600 last year. We succeeded in beating this number by $200! This is just part of what makes Arnold a wonderful place to be. During our ftst full week of school Arnold had parent nights for grades 1 - 5. Both evenings were well attended. We appreciate our parents and the continual support that they give to their chil&en. Our first full day of Kindergarten took place on August 13. Students were able to have breakfast with their students before the dav began. \While there were a few tears it was wonderful to have our parents drop off their students for the first day of school. On August 29 we had our flrst Amold Memorial Elementary School PTO meeting. We are excited to begin planning great events like our Fall Book Fair, Mustang Walk, and Fall Festival. A special thanks goes out toJen Comett and Cathy Burton for their leadership roles in the PTO this year! NUe also want to thank Kevin Brooks for coming to our meeting to give a special honor to Siema Swartzel for being a Distinguished Music Educator (awarded by Yale University). Mark &Jenann Lay from First United Methodist Church visited Arnold Memorial Elementary School today, bringing an abundance ofschool supplies for our students. Backpacks, pencils, notebook paPer, antibacterial wipes, markers, index cards, glue sticks and crayons brought big smiles to the faces of Amold students. First United Methodist Church will partner with Arnold Memorial Elementary School during rhe 2013-2014 school year. Mr. Chai, staff and students are beyond grateful for their support and generosity! Good News from Gleveland City Schools Month: August School: ELR Students and faculty/staff are enjoying the improvements to our building. The entrance is much more secure, and the classroom floors are wonderful. We are SO thankful to the BOE, our maintenance department, and our technology experts for their help in getting the school ready for students to return! E.L. Ross is pairing up with CHS for STEM education! Ross teacher, Tonya Mullinax and CHS teacher, Jeannie Cuervo have been accepted into the 2013-2014 STEM Teaching Fellows Cohort through the STEM lnnovation Hub. After their extensive training, they will be expected to take a leadership role in advancing STEM education in our school and in our community. We are very excited about this opportunity for our teachers and students! Mrs. Mullinax has enjoyed the training and the tour of the Mff plant. We are excited to welcome Mrs. Meghan Blackmon to Ross. Mrs. Blackmon comes to us from Arnold Memorial Elementary and will be teaching third grade. Students who moved into her class were treated to a cookie and cupcake party. The Otis Spunkmeyer fundraiser is off to a great start. Students have the opportunity to win some great prizes including tickets to Lake Winnie and Dollywood. This is our only fundraiser at Ross, and our students work hard for their school. Students are enjoying our Rossome Referral program. When students are "caught" doing something above and beyond what's expected or exhibiting extra good behavior, they are recommended for a Rossome Referral. Those students are presented a certificate and a treat. Our Ross family is growing! lt was a summer of brides and babies. Stacy Liner became the bride of Ted Carson. Becca Estrada became the bride of Jonathan Cathell. Laura Hudson became the mom to McCoy. Sarah Towe became the mom of Caroline. Roger was guest of 4th grade student Eva Callais. o - An eager group of parents attended our beginning of the year PTO meeting. August 16 - Our wonderful Stuart PTO provided a bountiful breakfast for teachers and staff. This was a owelcome back' gift from the PTO. o August 16 - Our outdoor classroom/garden is vibrant with many plants, vegetables and students eager to get their hands dirty. Mrs. Webb and Mrs. Melton recently collaborated on a science lesson. Visible in the background is our gazebo which is nearing completion. August 2l -Tamera Humphries hosted a Welcome Back meeting for all ASU participants in the Stuart Auditorium. August 26 - Our newest Stuart bulldog William Turner Martin arrived at II:46 a.m. He weighed 7 pounds 12 ounces and was 2l ll2 inches long. Mayfield had a great Registration Night on Thursday, August 1't. We were very excited to welcome our families to a new school year. Mayfield Elementary welcomed the former Cleveland City Schools principal, Mr. Ron Hill, as our in-service speaker on Friday, August 2. Mr. Hill spoke about the power of positivity. Mayfield welcomed our l-'t through 5th Grade students back to school on Tuesday, August 6th. Students and staff were happy to get the school year underway and have had a very good opening of school. Mayfield welcomed new Kindergarten parents to the building on the evening of August 7th. Parents were able to meet their child's new teacher and familiarize themselves with our policies. Kindergarten Phase-ln occurred at Mayfield on August 8tn, 9tn, and 13th. Kindergarten students came in small groups in order to be able to familiarize themselves with the building and make the transition smoother. Mayfield held a Kindergarten Parent & Student Breakfast on August 13th. This was the Kindergarten students first full day with everyone in class. This event gave the opportunity for parents to spend a little special time with their children before school began. Mayfield Elementary principal, Mr. Kelly Kiser, was named one of eight finalists for Tennessee Principal of the Year on August L4th. Mr. Kiser completed finalist interviews in Nashville on August 27th. 8. Mayfield Elementary held Parent Nights to for l't and 2nd Grades on Tuesday, August 20th, for 3'd Grade on Thursday, August 22nd, and for 4th and 5th Grades on August 27th. The purpose of these events are to allow parents to meet our staff and familiarize them with our procedures. 9. Mayfield is proud to support Mrs. Christy Duncan as a finalist for Tennessee Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Duncan completed her Teacher of the Year interviews on Friday, August 23'd. We are thankful that she is a part of our school staff. 10. Kindergarten and 4th Grade health screening took place at Mayfield on Thursday, August 29th. We are thankful to Coordinated School Health for organizing this event. Our classes are fairly well even: Kindergarten has 98 students, first grade has 112, and second grade has 105. We have no new teachers as all of our staff returned. We have one interventionist; Janice Norton who retired from Cleveland City several years ago. I am pleased to say that three of our interventionists are retired teachers and one is a certified teacher. What great teaching our students are getting from this kind of helpl Parent Nights were held the first week of school and the attendance was outstanding! Yates Primary has the best support and parent involvement than we could ever hopel Any activity is wellattended and wellsupported. Our Common Core meeting for parents was held on August 22"d and we had a great group of parents eager to learn about Common Core and what they could do to help their child. We ended our Phase-in-program for kindergarten with a Coffee and Cry for the parents. There were a few tears shed; more from parents than students. Dr. Hudson met with our faculty on August 27 to discuss many things about special education. Melissa Freeman, our school psychologist gave us much information about RTl, which will be implemented next school year. We are already well on our way to implementing this special program. We had almost 52500 pledged to United Way this year. This is a record pledge from our faculty. Now that we have four weeks of school behind us, I can see that this going to be a busy year! Cleveland High School August Good News ond Events Freshman orientation was a huge success! Everything went smoothly, and our student leaders did an outstanding job of escorting all of the new freshman around campus! Students were introduced to school wide NORMS, taken around to the Gym, Library Media Center, Theater, Science Wing, Commons, Amphitheater, Band Room, as well as an Eastside Tour! The tour of CHS ended with the Class of 20L7 getting their picture taken on the Blue Raider Football field! We are so proud to have this freshman class on campus and look forward to seeing them grow academically, and personally in the years to come! Alec Shirer was selected to participate in the All-National Honor Concert Band to be held at the conference of the National Association for Music Education, October 27 -29, 20L3. Alec was selected by audition from 1000s of students from across the USA to join 400 others in 4 ensembles, Concert Band, Orchestra, JazzBand, and Mixed Choir. This is a tremendous honor for both Alex and Cleveland HS. Cleveland High School is proud to announce the first annual Alumni Hall of Fame inductees. The induction ceremony will be held on September 13, 2013 at 9:00 AM in the Cleveland High School Dome. There will be over 50 local and national college, business, and military representatives providing information. Lady raider soccer team stands at 2-L Looking to do well this year with the likes of a strong quality side. Both the boys and the girls' soccer tournaments continue to yield both tangible and intangible benefits to our great community. Thanks to the Board for the support and the lights! Heidi Barringer was named the first Check Into Cash Athlete of the Week for golf. Heidi was featured in the Cleveland Daily Banner.
