Steve Watson and Lou Nimnicht achieved yet another
70.14% 70.83% Steve Watson and Lou Nimnicht achieved yet another excellent game on Tuesday at the Beach Bridge Club. Lou writes — “As usual, it took some luck (bidding a 50% slam, for example) to reach 70%. In addition, Steve was so on fire, had be been able to clone himself as a partner, he would probably have had an 80% game.” Steve shares his viewpoint — “Bridge is truly a partnership game. On this occasion our partnership blended smoothly, resulting in a very good score. Lou was not only an ideal partner, he also made —which he is prone to do — many great decisions at the table. Partnership discipline is a key to success in bridge.” We congratulate the two of you on your success! Another winning partnership — Carol Osgerby and Don Valiska — scored big-time on May 26 in an SSBC afternoon game. Don comments — “Carol and I have been playing together for several years now, and we enjoy each other’s company at the bridge table. I still have a lot to learn, and playing with Carol makes learning easy. Like most 70% games we did a lot of little things that gave us just a little better board than our opponents, and we stayed out of trouble on tough hands.” Carol adds — ”Don and I always enjoy playing with each other — win, lose or draw — we both enjoy the game. We laugh a lot and we enjoy our opponents. Sometimes we mess up and give many gifts to our opponents, and sometimes they return the favor. When we get lucky and pass when we should and bid when we should and the opponents decide it is their turn to gift us, we get a 70% game which is always nice. Most of all we just enjoy this wonderful game of ours!!!!” Top scorers for the 3rd week of May are — Lou Nimnicht — 6.71; Dave Bigler — 6.70; Barb Graegin — 6.43; Yuan Hsu — 5.88; Zafar Khan — 5.87; Joe Chin — 5.14; Jim O’Connell — 4.70; s me i T e Dan Spain — 4.36; Barbara Walczak — 4.31; Th Cathy Mason — 3.20; Steve Watson — 2.92; Mary Schumm — 2.87; Hilda Connor — 2.85; Ruth Westberg — 2.85. Congratulations! Operation SOS (Support our Service Members), a Highland organization, collects items to send to our soldiers overseas. Since 2007 Operation SOS has sent thousands of packages to our troops. See www.operationsosnwi.com/ for more information. Diane Martin has asked that the bridge community help in the collection of needed items such as — body wash, Q-tips, sun block, medicated powder, lip balm, Q-tips, antiperspirant, disposable razors, tooth paste, tooth brushes, and dental floss. There is a box in the foyer of the Elk’s Club, where you can place your donations when you come to the game on Mondays. ILLINI REGIONAL WINNERS This is the photo that appears online in the District 8 Advocate. Lee Esworthy, Larry Rabideau, Bob Butz and John Goring were the winners in the Rose Bowl Compact KO, Bracket 1. This regional was held in Champaign, IL from May 19 - 25. For this firstplace finish, they earned 11.91 masterpoints. As was previously reported in the newsletter, their grand total earned at the Illini Regional was 35.05 masterpoints. What a phenomenal foursome! We congratulate them on their spectacular win! Lou Nimnicht and Dan Spain achieved this excellent game on Monday, the 8th, which earned them 4.31 masterpoints. Congratulations to this superb pair! Dan says. “Lou was brilliant!” Lou states, “After our most recent 49% effort, Dan and I got most things right today. Even so, it required bidding an ”iffy” club slam and an inadvertent misbid by an opponent to sneak past 70%.” ABA ACBL JOINT SECTIONAL World Wide Bridge Contest Lou Nimnicht and Barbara Graegin scored the highest on June 6 with a 59.09% at the club level. Overall, they scored 60.25% and placed #323 among the 3856 pairs from 209 clubs in 25 countries. They each will receive a certificate at a later date. As of today a pair from Greece is the leader. It’s fun to compare your club scores and your percentage on each board with the overall results. There is a lot of interesting information online. Go to www.ecatsbridge.com. Some of you may know Libby Amos. She has played primarily in LaPorte. She is being honored at a party on July 2. If you are interested, check the flyer on the front table with details. Also Chuck Schultz could answer your questions. Libby was Chuck’s 2nd grade teacher, as well as his 6th grade English teacher, in the 1940s. Roger Sokol has been recovering from a back injury for about a month now. He is being treated for a herniated disc in his lower back. Recovery has been slow, but he is improving. He is able to walk/stand for several minutes before the pain is too much. He is receiving extensive physical therapy. In July the orthopedist will outline a course of treatment. Roger’s letter to all of you who care about his progress is on the front table. .................................................................. to all of our bridge dads! Thanks to Diane Martin for making this valuable tool available to us on Mondays. If you haven’t signed up to receive Fast Results electronically, pray tell why not? Being connected affords you a wealth of self-evaluation opportunities. This program focuses on delivery of only personal results. Not only are the hands displayed that you played earlier in the day, they are integrated with thorough hand analyses. For example, here is a screen which helps you study your declarer play. Welcome, Roger! Roger Casey, who plays primarily in Sun City Center in Florida, stopped by on Monday to join us in our mutual pastime. Roger has a home in Munster, where he spends about three months of the year. However, Roger is looking to sell his longtime home to reside in Florida permanently. Roger has been playing bridge since the 1970s, but his immersion in duplicate began only a few years ago. He has already has 300 masterpoints to his credit. He plays bridge three or four times a week in Florida. Before retirement Rogers worked for a manufacturer. He has 3 children and 4 grandchildren. Besides bridge, he golfs and swims and participates in workshops that the association gives (such as lapidary). We are happy that Roger has visited us and hope that he will drop by often during the summer. Judy Selund suffered a broken tibia and a fracture in her foot, when she was walking her dogs Tuesday evening. If you want to send her a card, send to 22 Bittersweet Lane, Ogden Dunes, IN 46368 or to talk with her, call 219-763-4900. \ A and B winners \ Wednesday Team Game C winners (a strong Illinois contingent) There were nine teams that placed overall in the third Wednesday of the month team game. WELCOME, JIM! Jim Casey joined his brother, Roger, at the Monday game. They played quite well together and ended up with 0.77 masterpoints. Prior to this game Jim had a total of 0.48 masterpoints, earned while on a recent cruise. Way to go, Jim! Jim learned the game while in college, and considers it good entertainment throughout the years. He and his wife have played a lot of bridge over the past 65 years. He hasn’t been playing much lately. However, he had such a good time on Monday, that he decided he would like to get more involved. Jim has 3 children and 5 grandchildren. Before his retirement he was a CPA and also a lawyer. In addition to bridge, he likes to golf, travel (mostly on cruises) and look for anything that’s fun to do. He retired at the age of 62 and has been retired for 25 years. Does that seem even remotely possible??!!? Jim says he just loves living — and we love having him as part of our congenial group! The Longest Day For the third year in a row ABCL has designated June 21st, the longest day in the year, (and also June 22nd this year) as a fund-raising day to support Alzheimer’s disease, care and research. In the past two years bridge players have donated more than $1,000,000 to help fight Alzheimer’s. Here you see Jim Lively in his “Fighting Alzheimer’s” t-shirt and Bob Ferguson with some of the many purple balloons at the Monday game. Each player paid a $10 entry fee, of which $2 was allocated for the Alzheimer’s fund. That made a total of $108, plus a $25 contribution from the Elks Club. As an aside — the Monday game held in Michigan City had the same number of tables as in Highland — 13½ — and they collected $700 to be given to the Alzheimer/Dementia Society of Northern Indiana. What an outpouring of generosity!
