She holds an M.FA in painting from Howard University and a B.A. in Cultural Studies and Studio Art from Norwich University. Among the group exhibitions in which Lewis was included are, the New Power Generation 2005 and the Common Ground, Uncommon Vision exhibitions at the Hampton University Museum; and Migrations of the African Diaspora at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. Lewis was also shown in a solo exhibition of her installation Conversation Among Blues Women, held during the Reclaiming Midwifes historical exhibition at the Smithsonian Institution Anacostia Museum. Her mural The Next Sunrise, a site specific commissioned work installed in 2004, is prominently featured at the Howard University Hospital. She currently works at Bowie State University, where she teaches Painting, Printmaking, Mixed/Multimedia Art, and Installations and Public Art. Washington, MD TEL: 301-203-6070; TTY 301-203-3803 FAX: 301-203-6071 Events and Exhibitions Retro/Spective: Works by Alan Binstock August 11-October 3 Alan Binstock’s work tends to be self-reflective and focuses on stone, glass and steel with occasional pieces in other materials. The stone and steel balance, support and cantilever their way towards a visual resolution, and each piece is a silent witness in dynamic tension. His compositions bring unique qualities, which each material manifests into a dialogue that, when successful, offer a moment of reflection. AFTERNOON TEA: Jazz Trombonist John Jensen with Piano Wednesday, September 10, 2 pm Harmony Hall Arts Center John Jensen, formerly lead trombonist with the U.S. Navy Commodores, the Navy’s jazz orchestra, has appeared as a soloist and combo leader and with the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. In addition to regular jazz concerts with either the piano or combo, he does a one-man program in which he plays a variety of wind instruments, including a unique Australian instrument, the didgeridoo. He talks about the development of brass instruments from the beginning of music history through the times great Louis Armstrong. Jensen also offers a tribute program honoring the trombonist and bandleader Tommy Dorsey, while also fronting a dynamic Dixie group called the Good Time Trio. All Ages Tickets: $16 per person Events and Exhibitions CONCERT : Blue Magic Saturday, September 13, 8 pm Blue Magic is a classic R&B Soul Group and one of the most popular groups to come out of the City of Philadelphia. They hit the top 40 Charts with their first three singles before breaking through and crossing over with the mega hit “Side Show”, which went gold. Their next single “Three Ring Circus”, made the R&B top 10 and the Pop Top 40 charts. Other noteworthy hits are “Spell”, “Stop to Start” and “Chasing Rainbows”. The group today consists of founder Richard Pratt, Ivery Bell, Jimmy Lee and Don Nottingham. They are guaranteed to touch the senses of any R&B/Soul music lover. All Ages Tickets: $35/General Admission; $30 students & seniors AFTERNOON TEA: Part Harmony, A Cappella Wednesday, September 17, 2 pm Harmony Hall Arts Center Part Harmony is one of Baltimore's finest a cappella groups. Established in 1984, they set out to bring joy to the hearts of everyone who listens through song. Known for their ability to bring back the sounds of Doo Wop mixed with Motown and Flash, Part Harmony always seems to please their audience. Becoming an attraction each summer at Baltimore City's Inner Harbor Downtown Amphitheater, their popularity grows with every performance. Some of their accomplishments include sharing the stage with Sinbad, Angela Bofield, Natalie Cole, The Four Tops, The Drifters, and others. They also had a cameo appearance in Charles Dutton's directorial debut "The Corner" and the first episode of "Homicide." All Ages Tickets: $16 per person Events and Exhibitions CONCERT: A Tribute to the Music of Motown Saturday, September 27, 8 pm An ensemble of the DMV’s most talented artists, A Tribute to the Music of Motown, featuring The Brencore AllStar Band, brings to life Motown of yesteryear. This fine production celebrates 55 years of Motown, highlighting songs of artists such as Smokey and The Miracles, The Temptations, The Supremes, The Jackson 5 and more. The Brencore All-Star Band re-creates the Motown sound for an ensemble of talented vocalists. A Tribute to the Music of Motown promises to be an evening of fun and nostalgia that will not soon be forgotten. Come on out and enjoy the music. Daniels (Main Galler y) Reception: Friday, September 5, 7-9 pm Nationally recognized watercolorist and former botanist David Daniels brings a unique personal sense of composition and color to the medium while displaying a remarkable range of experimentation. His bold, impressionistic style gives a new freshness to the beauty of nature. His sense of color is inspired, and his love and reverence for nature is endemic to his work. September 5 – October 26 Montpelier Arts Center Stephen Boocks (Librar y Galler y) Play Reception: Friday, September 5, 7-9 pm Play, a solo exhibition of acrylic paintings and works on paper, explores the dynamics of time, pattern, and how we process works of art. Grounded in geometric abstraction, Boocks’ paintings present hand-drawn grids as underlying infrastructures upon which saturated hues and loose, almost playful marks create an intimate world influenced by musical compositions, and wherein straight lines are tempered by soft curves. Montpelier Arts Center Friday, September 12, 8 pm Dick Morgan Reunion Band Dick Morgan was a favorite at Montpelier, delighting fans of all ages with his pianistic virtuosity. Following Dick’s passing, his group has remained together to honor his memory by playing the music Dick was known for. For this special performance, they are joined by Japanese pianist Tadataka Unno. All Ages Tickets: $25/person; 10% discount for Montpelier members & seniors Friday, September 19, 8 pm The Cheik Ndoye Group An accomplished musical artist whose music is a rich fusion of jazz and world music, bassist Cheik NDoye’s musical influences stem from his Senegalese heritage combined with his love for classic and contemporary American jazz. NDoye will also be performing with violinist Karen Briggs, guitarist Dan Leonard, drummer Tosin, saxophonist Ted Baker, and pianist Ei Staples. Brazil Project marries authentic and compelling Brazilian rhythms with contemporary jazz in a memorable way. This performance features virtuoso seven-string bassist and composer Leonardo Lucini from Rio de Janeiro and Canadian saxophonist Jeff Antoniuk, known for his mastery of West African rhythms that fuel the music of both continents. Expect ensemble playing and out-of-sight solos. All Ages Tickets: $25/person; 10% discount for Montpelier members & seniors Saturday, September 27, 2 pm One Mar yland One Book Discussion The Distance Between Us, Reyna Grande Montpelier Arts Center In its seventh year, One Maryland One Book is designed to bring together diverse people in communities across the state through the shared experience of reading the same book. The 2014 One Maryland One Book selection is The Distance Between Us: A Memoir by Reyna Grande, a poignant memoir of life before and after entering the U.S. from Mexico as an undocumented immigrant. Born in Mexico, award-winning novelist and memoirist Reyna Grande entered the U.S. as an undocumented immigrant when she was 9 years old. She writes about her life before and after leaving Mexico in her memoir, The Distance Between Us. A National Book Circle Critics Award finalist, The Distance Between Us is an inspirational coming-of-age story about the pursuit of a better life. The title “Axis” suggests a center or core that is capable of connecting, changing, and moving things, people and ideas to create a multitude of possibilities and alliances; it is a crucial transformative concept at this point in history. Fitting with the title, this exhibition brings together contemporary artwork by artists from across the United States whose work connects in spirit while it diverges in form. Prince George’s Sampler : 2014 Prince George's County Juried Exhibition The annual Prince George’s County Juried Exhibition returns to the Brentwood Arts Exchange with Brentwood Arts Exchange Prince George’s Sampler – an exploration of the diversity and richness within the county’s art community. Prince George’s Sampler features multi-media visual art by artists who live, work, or study in Prince George’s County. The annual County Juried Exhibition is always a crowd favorite. This year’s is sure to not disappoint.
