Living Legacy Giving Back to Continue the Ministry A esop has been quoted as saying, “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” The Living Legacy program at Twin Lakes and Twin Towers is a beautiful example of this thought in action. The Living Legacy program, where bequeathing a gift of property, a charitable gift annuity, a charitable trust naming Twin Lakes or Twin Towers the beneficiary or a certificate of deposit with their bank is made to Twin Lakes or Twin Towers, has been fortunate to have benefitted from the generosity of numerous members of our community. Marilyn Frank Marilyn Frank has lived at Twin Towers for over 12 years. She is involved in many programs and loves that she calls this campus home. She has become so fond of Twin Towers that she made the generous decision to become part of the Living Legacy program by bequeathing an annuity gift to the Life Enriching Communities Foundation. For Marilyn, it wasn’t a question of if she wanted to contribute to Twin Towers, but how to contribute. Marilyn is very grateful to have a sense of security in knowing that she will be able to call Twin Towers home for the rest of her life, no matter what happens to her financially. “I know that Twin Towers never forces people to move, even if they can no longer “afford it” here, and so I wanted to contribute what I could while I’m able to do so,” says Marilyn. She felt called to give something back to the place that has become so important to her. Marilyn, like all of our residents, is a true blessing to Twin Towers and Life Enriching Communities. Twin Towers has been home to Mary Helen Dunham for over ten years but she has been connected to our campus for far longer than that. Her late husband, John Dunham, worked for Twin Towers for seven years. He created the Development Department and founded the Angel Tree program. Their familiarity with the campus made Mary Helen and John’s decision to move to Twin Towers an easy one. John was diagnosed with Alzheimer ’s disease and Mary Helen wanted him to be able to enjoy life at Twin Towers before the disease stole his memory. She had peace of mind that she could continue to live and volunteer at Twin Towers after John passed away. Mary Helen Dunham Mary Helen has been an active and vibrant volunteer at Twin Towers since moving in, serving on committees such as Pastoral Care, Back 2 Back Ministries, Resident Council and the Twin Towers Auxiliary. You may also recognize Mary Helen from her volunteering at the Towers Desk. Mary Helen is a joyful example of giving back to the community using her time and talent. “Moving to Twin Towers was one of the best moves we made during our lives,” Mary Helen says. “I continue to talk to others about Twin Towers and the many opportunities, programs and assistance offered here.” Mary Helen is planning to become a Living Legacy member in the near future and Life Enriching Communities benefits greatly from Mary Helen’s generous spirit. Jack has been an active neighbor at Twin Lakes since moving here, having served as the Resident Representative to the Board of Trustees and also as the Chairperson on the Residents’ Committee. Jack is currently the President of the Friends of Twin Lakes, which supports the Benevolent Fund through fundraising efforts. Jack is also a lively volunteer beyond Twin Lakes. He is active in the Catholic Community, at both Twin Lakes and his parish church, St. Michael’s in Sharonville. He spends time volunteering at the Ohio Valley Voices, a school committed to teaching deaf children to speak, and contributes to the City of Montgomery by serving on the Sister Cities Commission. Jack not only gives time but also is contributing a generous financial legacy to the Twin Lakes community and to the Greater Cincinnati area. He is a member of the Father W (l-r) Earl Matte, Mary Matte (Jack’s brother-in-law and sister) and Jack Wild Edward L. Wieber, SJ, Heritage Society of St. Xavier High School and the Father Finn Society of Xavier University. Jack has charitably included Twin Lakes in his estate plan, making him a member of the Living Legacy program. “We believe he is the fabric of a servant leader and Jack’s bequest will provide for residents of Twin Lakes well into the future,” says Molly Talbot, Vice President, Life Enriching Communities Foundation. “He is most deserving of the Voices of Giving honor.” Life Enriching Communities and Twin Lakes would like to extend heartfelt congratulations to Jack Wild for earning this distinguished recognition! Twin Lakes Welcomes New Chaplain! e are very excited to welcome Rev. Paul Burden as Chaplain of the Twin Lakes Senior Living Community. Volunteer Spotlight Hazel Deffren – Making the Sale Celebrating 115 Years of T he Twin Towers Resident Council has held monthly Variety Sales for many years. What began as a resident event caught the attention of the surrounding community and now sees as many Hazel Deffren as 150 shoppers each month. One special person has been a constant presence at the Variety Sales for over 10 years, Variety Sale chairwoman Hazel Deffren. Hazel grew the Variety Sale to become the successful event that it is today. The sale generates $500 to over $1,000 each month, with 10% of the proceeds going to the Twin Towers Benevolent Fund and the remaining 90% going to the Resident Council’s General Fund. She has been a passionate supporter of the Variety Sale, dedicating many hours to making the events as successful as possible. However, after 10 years, Hazel has decided the time has come to step down as chairwoman and pass the responsibilities to faithful volunteer, Shane Bernard. “Shane is doing a fantastic job and I know that the Variety Sale is in excellent hands,” says Hazel. Hazel will continue to volunteer at the Towers Desk and in the chapel. “I’m a people person and volunteering keeps me busy,” she says. Many thanks to Hazel, for the many years she has devoted to chairing our monthly Variety Sale. The sale’s continued growth is surely a result of her enthusiastic efforts! 2014 Service to Greater Cincinnati marks the 115th anniversary of the founding of Twin Towers and subsequently, Life Enriching Communities. After recognizing a need for a community for retired ministers and laity, Rev. Dr. Henry C. Weakley engaged five Methodist Conferences to create The Methodist Home for the Aged in 1899. After a fire burned the original structure in Yellow Springs in 1902, Mr. and Mrs. Obed J. Wilson offered 20 acres of their land in College Hill on which to build a new home. Eventually 40 residents moved into the community on the Wilson land that is now known as Twin Towers, and so began Life Enriching Communities’ legacy of providing benevolent aid to those who have served. Twin Towers has grown to a robust, 120acre campus and is home to over 450 residents. In 2003, Life Enriching Communities expanded its services to reach the eastern communities of Southwest Ohio with the opening of Twin Lakes in Montgomery. Twin Lakes occupies 65 acres and serves close to 400 residents. Twin Towers and Twin Lakes have evolved into bustling communities offering extensive services, but have maintained the charitable foundation on which they were built. Life Enriching Communities is proud to serve a vigorous population from diverse religious and cultural backgrounds and looks forward to an exciting future! Life Enriching Communities recognizes that each of the tens of thousands of residents that have chosen to make our communities home over the past 115 years is part of our history. We are planning a 115th Anniversary celebration dinner on September 25th at Cooper’s Creek Event Center in Blue Ash, which will benefit our Benevolent Care Fund. Please watch for future communication with event and ticket details and ways to become involved in the celebration! Methodist Home for the Aged residents in early 1900’s; Twin Lakes residents today. The Ohio Kentucky Indiana Regional Council of Governments, the Green Partnership for a Greater Cincinnati, the Green Umbrella and the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden have joined forces to launch an initiative to plant 2 million trees in the eight county tri-state area by the year 2020. The Emerald Ash Borer has had a devastating effect on Ash trees in the region, and the Tri-State could eventually lose all Ash trees. In an effort to counteract the Emerald Ash Borer, the Taking Root campaign launched their tree planting efforts. Fred Moore and Martha Seaman Two of Twin Lakes’ residents are actively working, along with a committee, to involve the campus in planting and registering trees with the Taking Root initiative. Twin Lakes has already planted 100 trees that can be registered to the Taking Root Campaign. Martha Seaman and Fred Moore are both passionate about increasing that number to help the environment and in the process, beautify Twin Lakes! Martha, a member of the Tree Commission for Montgomery and the Twin Lakes Landscaping Committee, has had an interest in trees for years. A certified urban forester, Martha sees obvious opportunity in the area to impact the campaign. “Twin Lakes has built a new walking path between the North and South campus and the trees that are planted in that area will be registered to the Taking Root campaign, so I know we will be able to have an 4 effect on the regional goal of 2 million trees,” Martha said. “I hope the City of Montgomery joins our efforts, as they have many trees to replace from Ash Borer infestation in their parks.” Fred, a volunteer at the Cincinnati Museum Center, was interested immediately in the initiative and is working with a committee, including Martha and other residents, to develop an action plan for Twin Lakes. “We haven’t officially agreed on what our goal is, but I’m pushing for us to plant at least one tree for each resident and associate at Twin Lakes,” Fred said. “I would love to eventually have an Arbor Day type event where associates and their families, along with residents and their children and grandchildren, can participate in a tree planting event.” The committee that is coming together to work on the Taking Root project hopes to have confirmed plans in late spring or early summer, so watch for more information on this exciting campaign! Summer 2014 m Life Enriching Communities Foundation Publication 2013 Annual Report Thomas D. Anthony Ron Beshear Steve Black Jim Bowersox Larry Brueshaber Twin Lakes Chair A central theme of this letter for the past three years has been the importa nce of “every day,” the way life unfolds each day and the expectation that excellence sho uld be a daily occurrence. In 2010, we talked abo ut being effective and efficient “eve ry day”. In 2011, we referred to our associates bein g dedicated to the activities of “ea ch day”. In 2012, we noted the almost invisible natu re of the things that happen “every day”. In 2013, we have incorporated this thinking into a revised mission to create what we call “exceptional everyday experiences.” Don Cornett Twin Towers Chair Ruby Crawford-Hemphill William Culp LEC Foundation Chair Andy Grant Treasurer There are very few types of work whe re you conduct your efforts every day in the homes of the people you serve. In a setting like a senior living community this is wha t we do and it is generally in service to the same peo ple over a long period of time. This creates an intimate living and work experience and is a profound privilege for those of us who serve. It’s easier to be active and socialize with my friends,” said resident Betty Sullivan. The building, designed by SFCS and constructed by Lend Lease, Inc. replaces the James H. Life Enriching Communities is the only Senior Living organization based in Hamilton County with an investment grade credit rating. Leadership Development is Key to Success R ealizing that key to assuring “exceptional, everyday experiences” for residents, associates and volunteers means strengthening the skills of those in leadership positions, Life Enriching Communities engaged CEO Resources, Inc. to conduct a series of monthly development programs. The series, initiated in July, offered education and development in the areas of basic leadership, effective listening, managing chaos and building effective teams. Summer 2014 m Life Enriching Communities Foundation Publication “The key to becoming an effective leader is not to focus on making other people follow, but on making yourself the kind of person they want to follow,” says Scott McQuinn, President/CEO, Life Enriching Communities. “You must become someone others can trust to take them where they want to go. Therefore, leadership is both competence and character. ” Building on the success of the first sessions, the Leadership Development program has been carried over into 2014.
