TERMINAL LAYOUT
Toronto Pearson International Airport currently has two operating terminals: Terminal 1 and Terminal 3.
Terminal 1
All Star Alliance airlines (except Taca Airlines) serving Toronto operate out of Terminal 1; however, the terminal is
also used by airlines that are not members of Star Alliance. Terminal 1 has 58 gates: 101, 103, 105, 107–112, 120, 122,
124, 126, 128, 131–145, 151, 153, 155, 157, 160–163, 164A–164B, 165, 166A–166B, 167–181, 191 and 193. Two gates are able
to handle the Airbus A380 aircraft. Currently Emirates is the only operator of this type into Toronto Pearson.
Terminal 3
Most SkyTeam and Oneworld airlines serving Pearson operate out of Terminal 3, along with most airlines that are
not affiliated with an airline alliance. Terminal 3 has 39 gates: A1–A6, B7–B22 and C24–C41.
Cargo/GA operations
There are two main cargo facilities and two main GA facilities at Pearson. The Cargo West Facilities are Sky Service
Facilities are located between runways 15L/33R and 15R/33L, and VISTA Cargo Centers are located north of Terminal
3. Also, FedEx Express facilities and North GA facilities are located near runway 05/23.

On initial contact with Toronto Centre, each aircraft will be assigned their arrival runway. The pilot should begin to
brief and prepare for this approach as it will not be changed except for unforeseen circumstances such as a wind
shift.
The ATIS for CYYZ is broadcast on 120.82
Descent will be issued by Toronto Centre. In Canada, the phraseology used in conjunction with a descent clearance
which permits a pilot to commence descent when they wish is “when ready”
“BAW1234, when ready descend to FL240”
As of Feb 9, Toronto implemented 10 STARs instead of the previous 8. The 10 STARs cross over 5 outer bedposts.
Each outer bedpost now features 2 STARs, one for jets, and one for props. In each case, the lateral routings and
waypoints for each pair of STARs are identical. The only difference between a jet and prop STAR is the altitude and
speed restrictions.
The 5 outer bedposts and their associated STARs are (clockwise):

Request your decent with ATC prior to leaving cruise if descent instructions have not been given to you.
One of the key differences of these new/revised STARs is that at most points on the STAR, crossing heights allow for
a range of altitudes, instead of a single fixed altitude. This will allow Continuous Descent Approaches, which
provides a more efficient flight profile and subsequent fuel savings.
It is very important for pilots to check these altitude and speed restrictions. You are expected to abide by all
restrictions published on the STAR unless you are explicitly told the restriction is cancelled.
For example, when arriving for runway 24R on the YWT4 STAR, ATC will normally give you clearance to descend to
12,000’ when you’re many miles away from YWT. However, you must cross ROKTO between 14,000’ and 16,000’, and
only complete the descent to 12,000’ once past ROKTO. Controllers will not state these restrictions when giving you
the clearance.
Sample Phraseology:
“Air Canada 123, Centre. Descend 12,000 when ready, Toronto altimeter 2992.”
Even though you’ve been cleared to descend to 12,000, you must still cross ROKTO at or above 14,000, because
you're following the STAR.
You will be told if an altitude or speed restriction indicated in the STAR is cancelled.

Another major difference for the 4 new RNAV based STARs from the east (IMEBA/VIBLI and RAGID/UNDOX) is that
these STARs begin at the FIR boundary (with Montreal). Inbounds to Toronto from the east will no longer fly airways
within the FIR, but will be on a STAR from the moment they cross our FIR border, resulting in easier separation from
overflight (airway) traffic.
For traffic sequencing, pilots can expect step down descents, vectors and speed restrictions.
*In the event that holding becomes necessary, pilots should be ready and briefed with the published holding
information published on all STARs. Expect holding at IMEBA, RAGID, BORDN, YWT VOR or LINNG which ATC will be
issuing. This information is depicted on each of the STARs.
CANADIAN REGULATIONS AND PRACTICES
The transition altitude is 18000 ASL. When passing 18000 ASL in descent, change your altimeter from 29.92 to the
value issued by ATC.
Note that the altimeter setting is given in units of inches of Hg, not millibars.
Maximum 250 knots indicated air speed when below 10000 ASL.
When on approach, within 10 miles of the field and below 3000 AAE, the maximum permissible indicated airspeed is
200 knots unless otherwise authorized by ATC. This means an aircraft leaving 4000 ASL in descent should be
reducing to 200 IAS in preparation for their approach.
Cloud height in an ATIS or METAR is stated in feet AGL, visibility is reported in Statute Miles.
ARRIVAL
Pilots should be prepared to land on any runway assigned to them and with a 90 degree crosswind of up to 25 knots.
If you are unable, or do not feel comfortable flying one of the RNAV STARs into CYYZ, do not file one in your flight
plan, and instead terminate your route with YYZ. Aircraft unable to fly an RNAV STAR will be radar vectored to their
final approach course.
Aircraft will be handed off from Toronto Centre to one of two Arrival controllers:
CYYZ APP
124.47 (either north sector, or final arrival sector)
CYYZ APP
132.80 (either south sector, or outer arrival sector)

TORONTO RNAV STARS
All pilots should brief themselves with the details on the chart of the RNAV STAR which they will be flying including
the information on the altitude and speed restrictions in addition to the holding details. (You must have AIRAC cycle
1202 or higher, your default FS9 and FSX GPS DOES NOT have the new RNAV fixes contained in the new RNAV SIDs)
*Aircraft which have an RNAV STAR in their flightplan will not be given explicit authorization or clearance by Toronto
ATC to fly the STAR, as ATC expects the pilot will fly the STAR for the runway assigned to them.
The most important information for pilots to know is that CYYZ APP will provide aircraft with all of their descent
instructions. Pilots are not to commence descent from their last assigned altitude unless authorized to do so by the
Arrival controller. The pilot is to fly the lateral portion of STAR as depicted.
Aircraft may be vectored off the STAR at any point by ATC and when this happens the STAR is cancelled, and the
aircraft will be radar vectored to their final approach course. Because of the anticipated volume of arrival traffic
during this event, pilots may not be able to fly the entire STAR on their own and should anticipate radar vectors.
FINAL APPROACH
Because parallel approaches will be conducted at CYYZ during the event, it is vital that pilots do not descend on their
own until authorized to do so, even when cleared to intercept and track their localizer. Aircraft may not descend
from their last assigned altitude unless issued an approach clearance which does not contain a restriction.
In some instances, aircraft may be given a provisional approach clearance which requires them to not descend from
their last assigned altitude until intercepting the glide path from that altitude. For example: “Leave 4000 on the
glide slope”
Since simultaneous parallel approaches will be used at CYYZ, it is imperative that the localizer is captured accurately.
Overshooting the localizer will take you towards the adjacent approach course, and may result in a corrective vector
being issued and/or re-sequencing into the arrival pattern.
To maintain proper spacing with traffic ahead or behind you, the Arrival controller may apply a speed restriction for
you to comply with until passing the Final Approach Fix.

TOWER
There may be two Tower positions online for the event:

Pilots should use the high speed exits when possible to minimize runway occupancy time.
If you conduct a missed approach, advise ATC as soon as practicable and commence a climb straight ahead. CYYZ
TWR will issue specific missed approach instructions.
If you land on runway 06R/24L, exit the runway and then hold short of the inner runway 06L/24R. Tower will
authorize crossing of the inner runway and then transfer you to Ground once you are clear of runway 06L/24R.
Remember you must readback any runway hold instruction issued to you.
GROUND
Two Ground controllers may be available at Toronto:

After landing, if you have a particular location you would like to taxi to for parking, advise the Ground of the
location on initial contact with them. If no preference to parking area is indicated, you will be taxied to the closest
suitable terminal where you can shut down.
Typical parking areas are Terminal 1 (via AK, AL, AM and DP), Terminal 3 (via AT, AJ and AK) and the Infield Terminal
(via FA and EY). Terminal 2 though recently demolished still appears in most sceneries and may be used for parking if
requested, or if the other terminals become congested.
You will be instructed to taxi to an apron entry taxiway and instructed to contact apron.

APRON
Two Apron controllers may be available at Toronto:

The apron controllers advise aircraft to taxi to their designated gate via Taxilane numbers which are depicted on the
Terminal Parking Diagram. The apron is technically uncontrolled so pilots are to taxi at their own discretion, however
the apron controllers will provide traffic sequencing and flow direction. In addition, pilots do not need to ask
permission to shut down or request closure of their flight plan. Your IFR flight plan self-closes once you have landed.
AFTER THE FLIGHT
Once at the gate and shutdown, why not visit one of the many fine establishments in the Toronto area for a cup of
tea or coffee and a donut? If your flying day is now over why not treat yourself to a nice cool beverage and
entertainment of your choice!
Please do not linger too long at your arrival gate before disconnecting from the network as there are many arrivals
and departure scheduled for this event and parking may be hard to find for the following aircraft. Also please
remember the impact of your aircraft sitting idly on the servers during the time of high network demand.
