Chrysin
Chrysin = chemical name for a type of isoflavone
molecule that has been demonstrated to be a
potent aromatization blocker.
=> minimizes the conversion of testosterone to
either estrogen or DHT (dihydrotestosterone).
Where does Chrysin come from?
Chrysin is extracted from a fairly rare plant called
the Passiflora Caerula. => natural extract yet more
powerful than most anti-aromatase drugs you might
be familiar with.
Chrysin
« Studies done in Europe show that after
supplementing with chrysin blood serum levels of
testosterone went up 30%! »
How does this work? Chrysin basically
↓ estrogen levels by cutting down on its conversion
from testosterone.
500 mg per serving
1-3 grams of chrysin per day
= safe & effective dose.
Seranoa repens

= > ↓ 5- α -reductase activity of the prostate
in vitro
Unlike other 5- α -reductase inhibitors, Serenoa repens
↓ the 5- α -reductase activity of human prostate cancer
cell lines without interfering with the cellular capacity
to secrete PSA.
=> therapeutic advantage of Serenoa repens over
other 5- α -reductase inhibitors as treatment as this
phytotherapeutic agent will permit the continuous use
of serum PSA measurements as a useful biomarker for
prostate cancer screening & for evaluating tumour
progression
Habib FK, Ross M, Ho CK, Lyons V, Chapman K. Serenoa repens (Permixon) inhibits
the 5alpha-reductase activity of human prostate cancer cell lines without interfering with

Tribulus terrestris extract=> ↑ serum testsoterone
(+52%), DHT (31%) &DHEAS (29%) in primates
SUBJECTS: Primates, rabbit &rat
THERAPY: Tribulus terrestris (TT) extract => intravenously, as a bolus dose of
7.5, 15 and 30 mg/kg, in primates for acute study. Rabbits and normal rats were
treated with 2.5, 5 and 10mg/kg of TT extract orally for 8 weeks, for chronic study.
• In primates: ↑ serum testsoterone (+52%), DHT (31%) &DHEAS (29%) at 7.5mg/kg
were statistically significant.
• In rabbits: ↑ serum testsoterone & ↑ DHT were increased compared to control,
however, only the increases in DHT (by 30% and 32% at 5 and 10mg/kg) were
statistically significant.
• In castrated rats, increases in T levels by 51% and 25% were observed with
Testosterone & Tribulus terrestris extract respectively that were statistically sign.
CCL: TT increases some of the sex hormones, possibly due to the presence of
protodioscin in the extract. TT may be useful in mild to moderate cases of ED.

Maca
= Peruvian herb
⇒menopause relief for hot flashes & libido booster
Maca has been used by Peruvians for countless centuries,
from before the time of the Incas.
Maca => andropausal symptoms
BACKGROUND: Maca (Lepidium meyenii) = Andean plant of the brassica (mustard)
family
METHODS: Cochrane criteria.
RESULTS: 4 randomized controlled-studies met all the inclusion criteria.
• Two RCTs suggested a significant positive effect of maca on sexual dysfunction
or sexual desire in healthy menopausal women or healthy adult men,
respectively, while the other RCT failed to show any effects in healthy cyclists.
• The further RCT assessed the effects of maca in patients with erectile
dysfunction using the International Index of Erectile Dysfunction-5 & showed
sign. effects.
CONCLUSION: limited evidence for the effectiveness of maca in improving sexual
function. However, the total number of trials, the total sample size, and the average
methodological quality of the primary studies were too limited to draw firm
conclusions. More rigorous studies are warranted.

EstroageLow is a very effective treatment of low levels of
estrogens due to the plant extracts rich in isoflavones and
flavonoids.
Black Cohosh
= fairy candle
= summer-blooming
woodland plant that
played an important
role in patent
medicine.
Black Cohosh
= alternative to hormonal therapy to
treat hot flashes, mood
disturbances, sweating, heart
palpitations, & vaginal dryness.
Apparently, this is accomplished in the
absence of any “systemic or
breast-specific estrogenic effects.
Black Cohosh
= herb used as an alternative to estrogen-replacement therapy.
Estrogen-like properties
• provides relief in hot flashes & water retention
• May relief uterine & bladder prolapse & incontinence
• can promote energy

Low levels of cortisol can be successfully treated by
administering immunostimulatory plants such as Echinacea
and Italian everlasting, substances rich in steroidal saponins
such as Honduras sarsaparilla and Siberian Ginseng in
addition to substances which inhibit the degradation of
cortisol such as Liquorice.
Licorice
Licorice
Corruption of the Greek name glyrrhiza => the other official
name, Liquiritra officinalis; the medieval name was gliquiricia
from which the name licorice or liquorice is obtained.
Licorice => > 2x ↑ urinary cortisol in healthy people
SUBJECTS: 13 normal volunteers => ate either
THERAPY: consumption of 100 or 200 g/day of licorice for 1-4 weeks
• > 2x ↑ urine cortisol excretion in 10 of 13 subjects (mean, 33.8 before & 83.3
µg/24 h at 1 week after commencing licorice) => excretion rates similar to
Cushing's syndrome in 7 subjects (range, 91-226, vs nl = 11-82 µgrams/24 h).
• Urine cortisol excretion remained sign. ↑ (P <0.01) above control levels for at
least 1 week after licorice was withdrawn.
• No change of urinary steroid metabolite (tetrahydrocortisol, tetrahydrocortisone,
tetrahydro-11-deoxycortisol, 17-ketogenicsteroids, &17-ketosteroids) excretion
• No change of serum cortisol & ACTH
• Normal 0800-1600-h diurnal variation of plasma cortisol was maintained
Direct intraadrenal infusion of the active mineralocorticoid component of licorice,
glycyrrhetinic acid => 2 sheep with autotransplanted adrenal glands
• failed to stimulate cortisol secretion acutely.
CCL: Licorice-induced changes in cortisol excretion ≠ result of adrenocortical
stimulation but more likely represent a change in the renal handling of cortisol.
Epstein MT, Espiner EA, Donald RA, Hughes H, Cowles RJ, Lun S. Licorice raises urinary cortisol in
man. J Clin Endocrinol Metab. 1978 Aug;47(2):397-400.
Grapefruit juice & licorice => ↑ cortisol availability
in patients with Addison's disease
SUBJECTS: Patients with Addison's disease on stable cortisone acetate (CA) therapy
=> Check of serum cortisol in the first 2.6 h after orall cortisone acetate
THERAPY : Licorice & grapefruit juice (GFJ) on the absorption and metabolism of
cortisone acetate (CA) (vs controls): 2.6 h after tablet ingestion
• + 5.5% ↑ median AUC for serum cortisol with licorice (53 783 vs 50 882, P<0.05)
• + 17 % ↑ median AUC for serum cortisol w/grapefruit juice (60 661 vs 50 882,
P<0.05)
• + 20% ↑ median serum cortisol levels with licorice (223 vs 186 nmol/l, P<0.05)
• + 81% ↑ median serum cortisol levels w/grapefruit juice 337 vs 186 nmol/l, P<0.01).
• +104% ↑ median urinary cortisol/cortisone ratio w/ licorice (0.43 vs 0.21,
P<0.00001)
• whereas GFJ increased the (allo-tetrahydrocortisol + tetrahydrocortisol)
/tetrahydrocortisone ratio (0.55 vs 0.43, P<0.05).
CCL: Licorice and in part. Grapefruit juice => ↑ cortisol available to tissues in the hours
following oral CA administration
Methlie P, Husebye EE, Hustad S, Lien EA, Løvås K. Grapefruit juice and licorice increase cortisol availability
in patients with Addison's disease. Eur J Endocrinol. 2011 Nov;165(5):761-9.

the adrenal cortex]. Wien Med Wochenschr. 1962 Mar 31;112:259-62.
Helichrysum
Helichrysum italicum or Helichrysum angustifolium is a
flowering plant of the daisy family Asteraceae.
It is sometimes called the curry plant because of the strong smell
of its leaves.
It grows on dry, rocky or sandy ground around the Mediterranean.
Oleanolic &ursolic acid fraction from Helichrysum
=> Anti-inflammatory (antihistaminic &
antieicosanoid effects)
HELICHRYSUM: triterpene isomers ursolic and oleanolic acids
• inhibited compound 48/80-induced histamine release from rat peritoneal mast
cells in an approxi. % percentage of 45% at 100 µM and myeloperoxidase
secretion from A23187-ionophore-stimulated rat peritoneal leukocytes in a
significant manner at doses of 50 and 100 µM. F
• very sign. & dose-depe. inhibited generation of the cyclo-oxygenase metabolite
prostaglandin E2 (41% inhibition at 50 ùM) and the 5-lipoxygenase metabolite
leukotriene B4 (79% inhibition at 50 µM) from activated rat leukocytes => antieicosanoid activity =more potent than that produced by the pure triterpene
oleanolic acid used for comparision, indicating a stronger action of the ursolic
acid, the major compound of the isolated triterpene fraction
CCL: the triterpene isomers oleanolic & ursolic acids present in the medicinal plant
Helichrysum picardii => anti-inflammatory
Santos Rosa C, García Gimenez MD, Saenz Rodriguez MT, De la Puerta Vazquez R.

Whereas low levels of Estrogens can be
increased by a number of natural
substances, low levels of progesterone can
be treated in particular by 2 plants, Wild
yam and Agnus castus.
Chaste Berry (Vitex agnus castus)
Medieval monks were said to have eaten the berries to reduce sexual desire, hence
the name Chaste Tree or Monks Pepper. Ancient Europeans used the berries to treat
hemorrhage following childbirth & menstrual regulation. It was also used for
injuries & inflammation & to encourage milk flow after birth.
Chaste Berry: Ingredients
No one constituent of chaste tree has been isolated as responsible for its
medicinal effects.
The berries contain iridoids as glycosides, including aucubin & agnuside.
Flavonoid content is highest in the leaves (up to 2.7 %) & flowers (nearly
1.5 %).
The berries contain almost 1 % of flavonoids such as casticin, isovitexin,
orientin, kaempferol, & quercetagetin.
It is perhaps surprising that chaste tree does
not contain plant
estrogens.
Instead, progesterone, hydroxyprogesterone,
testosterone, epitestosterone, & androstenedione
have been identified in the leaves & flowers.
The essential oil of chasteberry may be responsible for its distinctive spicy
aroma. It contains monoterpenes cineol and pinene, along + limonene,
eucalptol, myrcene, linalool, castine, citronellol, & others, plus several
sesquiterpenes.
An alkaloid, vitricine, is also an ingredient.
Progesterone
dominance
Chaste Berry: clinical trials
Glucoc.-like
Tincture (fresh ripe berries pounded to a pulp)
• relief of paralysis, pains in the limbs, weakness,
effects
• Relief of breast pain,
• Menstrual regulation
• Treatment of hemorrhage
Clinical trials => prolonged use of Chaste &Tree Berries
Progesterone• Sign. reduces a range of PMS symptoms, from irritability &
like effects
headaches to cramping & breast pain.
• ↑ proliferative (first) phase of the menstrual cycle
• ↓ water weight, headache & fatigue
• mild effectiveness for women + infertility & irregular periods
E2-like effects
• ↓ hot flashes in the peri-or post menopause.
Some studies => berries = antiandrogenic
• ↓ acne in men & women
• ↓ overactive libido.
Progesterone-like
Vitex (Chaste Berry) => pituitary gland
• ↑ LH, => re-establishes the normal balance between estrogen
or -stimulating
& progesterone, thereby regulating a women‘s cycle
effects
Progesterone cream => ↑ skin elasticity & firmness,
↓ wrinkles
SUBJECTS: 40 peri- & post-menopausal women => double-blind study :
TREATMENT: 16 weeks of 2 % progesterone cream (vs placebo) ↓ ↓
• Sign. ↑ of the elastic skin properties, as demonstrated by objective measurements of
three skin elasticity parameters (P < or = 0.05)  control group: no such effect.
• greater ↓ in wrinkle counts (29.10% vs. 16.50%) & wrinkle depth (9.72% vs. 7.35%)
around the right eye
• greater ↓ in nasolabial wrinkle depth (9.72% vs. 6.62%)
• Sign. ↑ (P < 0.05) increase in skin firmness (23.61% vs.13.24%) in the treatment group.
• no sign. diff. in epidermal hydration & skin surface lipids in either group
• Progesterone was well absorbed in the systemic circulation: mean blood levels rose
minimally, but stat. significantly (P = 0.001), by 0.53 ng/m
• No serious side-effects of the treatment were observed.

progesterone cream on the skin of peri- and postmenopausal women: results from a doubleblind, vehicle-controlled, randomized study. Br J Dermatol. 2005 Sep;153(3):626-34
DHEA => ↓ aging skin
in postmenopasual women
SUBJECTS: 2 groups of 20 post-menopausal women
RESULTS: topical DHEA 1% during 4 months => facial & hand skin
(vs placebo-vehicle)
• ↑ rate of sebum => perceived rather positively by a menopausal population
usually affected with ↓ sebum level.
• ↑ skin brightness
• counteract papery appearance of skin & epidermal atrophy, a
characteristic feature of hormone-related skin aging.
• also acts on skin process related to wrinkles, but this result remains to be
confirmed. ↑
