Reverse Aging Hair & Face with Hormones, Nutrients & Herbs Thierry Hertoghe Healthy (young adult) Increasingly unhealthier with advancing age = New, wellkept house Age 24, untreated = Age 64, untreated House not well cared of, not repaired = Untreated very old person Ruin How can we partially or even near totally reverse the aging? Ideally = Age 64, untreated = Age 68 => Outlook of a treated age 24? Aim of Medicine: Make the patient as healthy as possible Aim of Reversing Aging Medicine: Make the patient as young as possible to be sure (s)he is at his (her) healthiest Less healthy Age 55 Healthier Age 52 Age 58 Healthiest Age 56 but looks as a 40-year old (15 years younger) Age 60 60 but looks as a 30-year old (25 years younger) Aging Hair Diffuse Hair Loss Improved by Thyroid IGF-1-GH Iron, Zinc, silicone Diffuse hair Vit. A, B5 (pantothenate), B7 (biotin) loss Tyrosine, iodine Cysteine, methionine, cystine, Diffuse Hair Loss Improved by Diffuse hair loss Kelp (→ Thyroid) Other seaweeds Kelp For Thyroid Hormones, Kelp, Dulse, & other seaweeds Kelp Kelp: Doses +/-250 µg iodine in 150 mg tablet Product Kelp When tot take? Wakeup (2nd dose before supper) Duration Dose Every day for 1-12 months per year 30 to 450 mg /day (1 x 150 mg/day) Caution: at high doses, the iodine may suppress T4 secretion out of the thyroid & consequently induce hypothyroidism Upper Scalp Hair loss Improved by Male pattern Testosterone + finasteride hair loss Estrogen: 17-alpha-E2 Reduce red meat intake (↑ DHT) Improved by Female pattern hair loss Estrogen Testosterone + finasteride Upper Scalp Hair loss Improved by Male pattern Chrysin hair loss Saw Palmetto Female pattern hair loss Improved by Black cohosh, red clover, soy bean, yarrow, angelica (→ estrogens) Saw Palmetto Herb extracts to reduce the conversion of testosterone to DHT, dihydrotestosterone Chrysin Saw Palmetto 500 mg 80 mg S/ 3x 1 to 2 capsules/day: at wake-up, lunch & before bedtime Chrysin Chrysin = chemical name for a type of isoflavone molecule that has been demonstrated to be a potent aromatization blocker. => minimizes the conversion of testosterone to either estrogen or DHT (dihydrotestosterone). Where does Chrysin come from? Chrysin is extracted from a fairly rare plant called the Passiflora Caerula. => natural extract yet more powerful than most anti-aromatase drugs you might be familiar with. Chrysin « Studies done in Europe show that after supplementing with chrysin blood serum levels of testosterone went up 30%! » How does this work? Chrysin basically ↓ estrogen levels by cutting down on its conversion from testosterone. 500 mg per serving 1-3 grams of chrysin per day = safe & effective dose. Seranoa repens or Saw Palmetto 1 to 3 x 160 mg/day Saw Palmetto (Serenoa repens) = > ↓ 5- α -reductase activity of the prostate in vitro Unlike other 5- α -reductase inhibitors, Serenoa repens ↓ the 5- α -reductase activity of human prostate cancer cell lines without interfering with the cellular capacity to secrete PSA. => therapeutic advantage of Serenoa repens over other 5- α -reductase inhibitors as treatment as this phytotherapeutic agent will permit the continuous use of serum PSA measurements as a useful biomarker for prostate cancer screening & for evaluating tumour progression Habib FK, Ross M, Ho CK, Lyons V, Chapman K. Serenoa repens (Permixon) inhibits the 5alpha-reductase activity of human prostate cancer cell lines without interfering with PSA expression. Tribulus terrestris extract=> ↑ serum testsoterone (+52%), DHT (31%) &DHEAS (29%) in primates SUBJECTS: Primates, rabbit &rat THERAPY: Tribulus terrestris (TT) extract => intravenously, as a bolus dose of 7.5, 15 and 30 mg/kg, in primates for acute study. Rabbits and normal rats were treated with 2.5, 5 and 10mg/kg of TT extract orally for 8 weeks, for chronic study. • In primates: ↑ serum testsoterone (+52%), DHT (31%) &DHEAS (29%) at 7.5mg/kg were statistically significant. • In rabbits: ↑ serum testsoterone & ↑ DHT were increased compared to control, however, only the increases in DHT (by 30% and 32% at 5 and 10mg/kg) were statistically significant. • In castrated rats, increases in T levels by 51% and 25% were observed with Testosterone & Tribulus terrestris extract respectively that were statistically sign. CCL: TT increases some of the sex hormones, possibly due to the presence of protodioscin in the extract. TT may be useful in mild to moderate cases of ED. Gauthaman K, Ganesan AP. Maca = Peruvian herb ⇒menopause relief for hot flashes & libido booster Maca has been used by Peruvians for countless centuries, from before the time of the Incas. Maca => andropausal symptoms BACKGROUND: Maca (Lepidium meyenii) = Andean plant of the brassica (mustard) family METHODS: Cochrane criteria. RESULTS: 4 randomized controlled-studies met all the inclusion criteria. • Two RCTs suggested a significant positive effect of maca on sexual dysfunction or sexual desire in healthy menopausal women or healthy adult men, respectively, while the other RCT failed to show any effects in healthy cyclists. • The further RCT assessed the effects of maca in patients with erectile dysfunction using the International Index of Erectile Dysfunction-5 & showed sign. effects. CONCLUSION: limited evidence for the effectiveness of maca in improving sexual function. However, the total number of trials, the total sample size, and the average methodological quality of the primary studies were too limited to draw firm conclusions. More rigorous studies are warranted. Shin BC, Lee MS, Yang EJ, Lim HS, Ernst E. Maca (L. meyenii) for improving sexual function: a systematic review. BMC Complement Altern Med. 2010 Aug 6;10:44. Chaste Berry (Vitex agnus castus) Medieval monks were said to have eaten the berries to reduce sexual desire, hence the name Chaste Tree or Monks Pepper. Ancient Europeans used the berries to treat hemorrhage following childbirth & menstrual regulation. It was also used for injuries & inflammation & to encourage milk flow after birth. Chaste Berry: Ingredients No one constituent of chaste tree has been isolated as responsible for its medicinal effects. The berries contain iridoids as glycosides, including aucubin & agnuside. Flavonoid content is highest in the leaves (up to 2.7 %) & flowers (nearly 1.5 %). The berries contain almost 1 % of flavonoids such as casticin, isovitexin, orientin, kaempferol, & quercetagetin. It is perhaps surprising that chaste tree does not contain plant estrogens. Instead, progesterone, hydroxyprogesterone, testosterone, epitestosterone, & androstenedione have been identified in the leaves & flowers. The essential oil of chasteberry may be responsible for its distinctive spicy aroma. It contains monoterpenes cineol and pinene, along + limonene, eucalptol, myrcene, linalool, castine, citronellol, & others, plus several sesquiterpenes. An alkaloid, vitricine, is also an ingredient.
