SUBJECT: WILDPLANETPROCESSINGFACILITYIN VIETNAM WildPlanettunaandsardinesarecannedinapartnerfacility locatedinVietnam Unfortunately,thereisnoU.S.-basedcannerycapableofprocessingthevolumeof sardinesandtunathatwecanonanannualbasis.Wehaveelectedtoprocessour5oz cansoftunaandoursardinesinahighlyrespectedpartnerfacilityinVietnam,which wevisitseveraltimesayear.Thisfacilityoffersstate-of-the-artcanningexpertiseinan immaculatelyclean,accreditedenvironmentthatproduceshigherqualityfinished productsthananycannerywehaveseenintheU.S.Inaddition,thefacilityhaspassed socialandproductionauditsbyindependentauditorssentinbyCostcoandWhole Foods,retailerscurrentlycarryingourproductline.Itisofinterestthatourpartner canneryinVietnamqualifiestoshiptotheEU,whosesanitationstandardsarehigher thanUSstandards.ThisplanthasreachedahigherstandardofsanitationthanmostUS canneriesthatdonotqualifyforEUexport. Maintainingreasonablepricesforourretailersandconsumers IfweweretofindafacilityintheU.S.capableofhandlingoursardineandtunavolume, thecostwouldgreatlyincreasetheretailpricebeyondthereachofmostfamilies.Our goalistomakesustainableseafoodmainstreamandthushaveagreaterimpacton fisheryharvestpracticesforthelong-termgoodofoceanconservation.Higherretail priceswouldnotallowourproductstofindtheirwayintomanyfamilies’homesand thereforereducethereachofouroverallenvironmentalmissionaswell. ProcessinginVietnamdoesnotcreateabigcarbonfootprint Oneofthelowestcarbon-loadformsoftransportationontheplanetisoceanfreight. Thecarbonloadof26tonsoffrozentuna(oneshippingcontainer)beingshippedfrom SeattletoVietnamisminisculecomparedtodomestictruckfreight,andthefinished cansreturningareevenless.
