Runs will be outdoors, weather permitting, but should conditions prove to be unfavourable, runs may be moved inside (at the Event Coordinators judgement, on that day). 4. Payout will be based on the average of 5 of the 6 runs, with the lowest scored run for each horse being “thrown-out”, prior to calculating the overall average. 5. Format – All horses, Head and Heel, will compete in each Go Round until it’s completion, beginning with Head Horses, followed by Heel Horses. Order of go will be drawn prior to the event, and will remain the same in each Go Round. 6. A rope barrier will be used for all runs. If the barrier malfunctions, a rerun will be awarded by the barrier judge. 7. There will be, at a minimum, two judges. There is a 30 second time limit for all runs. 15. Runs will be considered complete when both header and healer are dallied, and horses are facing each other, and each horse has all four feet on the ground. 16. In the case of an unfair opportunity with the steer, the judge(s) has the authority to award a rerun. Re-runs will occur at the end of each round. 17. HEAD HORSE CRITERIA 1. Approach and Entry to the heading box: horse should ride to the box quietly and obediently, remaining relaxed as the barrier is strung. Horse should willingly turn either direction with no resistance, keeping all four feet on the ground. Horse should back calmly into the corner and be prepared / positioned for the run. 2. Initiate the run / Break from the Box: Horse should score with all four feet on the ground, and leave the box smoothly and flat off the roper’s hand. Horse must run through the barrier with no hesitation. Points will be deducted for a broken barrier. 3. Run & Rate: Horse should run hard to position, then rate once they have reached the roping position as cued by the rider. Once the steer is roped, horse should remain framed and in position to handle the steer. 4. Set & Handle: Horse should widen and set steer, with-out dropping a shoulder or drifting down the arena. Horse should remain framed, as it and the rider tow the steer straight across the arena while maintaining good speed and control of the steer. 5. Face: Horse must face on the forehand as cued by the rider, then move backwards with all four feet on the ground, such as to remove slack from the rope. 6. Settle: Horse should now recognize that the run is complete, and stand calmly as the steer goes to the catch pen. Horse must walk out of the arena relaxed. 7. Sharpness of the Run: This is a reward to a horse that allows the rider to complete the run in a timely manner. Points will also be awarded to a horse that allows the rider to take advantage of a good opportunity, or one that handles a bad situation well. HEEL HORSE CRITERIA 1. Approach and Entry to the heading box: horse should ride to the box quietly and obediently. Horse should willingly turn either direction with no resistance, keeping all four feet on the ground. Horse should back calmly into the corner and be prepared/ positioned for the run. 2. Initiate the run / Break from the Box: Horse should be alert and acknowledge the steer. Horse should remain with all four feet on the ground, and leave the box smoothly and flat off the roper’s hand. 3. Run & Rate: Horse should haze the steer as necessary, including adjustments of speed and position depending on the steer’s pattern. Once the steer is roped by the header, the heel horse should drop back to become positioned for entry into the corner, on the rider’s cue. 4. Corner Entry & Position for Delivery: Horse should turn through the corner, with shoulder elevated, and place itself, such that the rider is positioned to the left of the steer’s hip. Horse should maintain a proper frame, and distance from the steer, so as to not crowd the roper’s delivery. Anticipation of the “Stop” prior to the heeler’s delivery will result in a deduction of points for this Element. 5. Stop: Horse should prepare for the stop as the heeler delivers his rope, and come to a complete stop as the heeler dallies and awaits the headers face. Horse should stop on the hindquarters, remaining square to the steer, until the header is faced, and / or the run is complete.
