Notre Dame High School, a Catholic college
preparatory school in the Holy Cross tradition,
educates the hearts and minds of students who are
diverse in talent, ethnicity and society. As a faith
community, Notre Dame strives to provide each
student with a rich academic background, an
appropriate sense of self, an opportunity for growth, a
commitment to family, community, nation and world,
and a respect for the spiritual dignity of all persons.

As a proud alumnus of Notre Dame
High School, I look forward to continuing to serve as the Chairman of the
Board of Directors through June 2014.
It is a privilege to work with such a talented and committed Board whose sole
focus is to support our gifted faculty in
its pursuit to educate the hearts and
minds of all students.
Similar to recent years, about 900 applications were received for 330 student
openings in the Class of 2017. Reflecting
the broad interest of parents and students outside our immediate area, we are
now offering a student bus service to the
Westside and the West Valley. Emphasis
on diversity and excellence continues to
be the norm.
2013-2014 points to another great year
for academics, men and women’s sports,
and other important activities such as
band, theatre, debate, art, and robotics.
All of these programs are designed to
expand students’ interest.
The success of our Light the Way
Capital Campaign is dramatically
enhancing campus facilities. An eightlane 25-meter pool and aquatic center
will greatly improve the ND aquatic
programs.
Watch in awe as the new baseball stadium evolves into a world class facility
ready for the spring season. The artificial turf surface and lights will also
expand uses of the field for many sports.
The importance of technology is reflected in the classroom and with the students personally. Currently all teachers
are preparing to implement iPads.
Students will be equipped with iPads
and the cutting edge learning experience
will further prepare them for a bright
future. These advances offer more
opportunities for learning inside and
outside the classroom.
I hope all of you will continue to take an
active role in the school activities and
events. Personal involvement and charitable participation are most important
to the school’s future. Enjoy the year as
you become part of the wonderful Notre
Dame experience.

Dave Sitton, Class of 1973
Recently Notre Dame lost one of its most visible and colorful alumni with the passing on
August 12, 2013 of W. Dave Sitton. He
passed away from a pulmonary embolism at
his home in Tucson, Arizona. He was 58 years
of age. Dave was a member of the Class of
1973 and personified the Notre Dame Man.
He was involved in numerous student activities and played baseball and football while
starring in the annual high school plays.
Dave left his home in North Hollywood and
the family’s Sitton’s restaurant to attend the
University of Arizona. He became the U of
A’s Head Rugby Coach at the age of 22 and
held the position for 36 years until his
untimely passing. He was regarded as an international ambassador for the sport of rugby
while doing play-by-play and color commentary for NBC's rugby coverage, including the
Olympics.
He was the radio and TV voice of U of
Arizona football and basketball for 22 years
and the recipient of two Emmy awards. A lifelong student of Constitutional and U.S.
History, he unsuccessfully ran for Congress in
2012 to fill the seat vacated by Gabby
Giffords.
He is survived by his daughters Olivia (25)
and Blakeney (21) and his sister Margie.

to come. There are many opportunities to make charitable contributions to Notre
Dame High School and to express your commitment to our future.
Cash Gifts
Of the gifts made to Notre Dame High
School, most are paid through cash (i.e.
by check, credit card, or electronic fund
transfer.) Cash is the easiest gift for a
donor to make and for the organization to receive. If you itemize your
deductions, you may be entitled to an
income tax deduction for all contributions in a given year of up to 50 percent
of your adjusted gross income with a
five-year carry-over period for the
excess.
Pledge
By far, most of the gifts made to Notre
Dame High School are in the form of
outright gifts. On occasion, or in the
case of a capital campaign, gifts are initially made as pledges — typically
payable over three to five years. Often
pledges afford contributors the opportunity to make far more substantial
gifts than would likely be the case if
they were limited to making payment
in full within a single year.
Stocks & Bonds
Assets such as these are a great way to
give. A donor can save on capital gains
tax and may get a charitable income tax
deduction for the full fair market value.
An income tax deduction of up to 30
percent of your adjusted gross income
can be taken and still carry-forward any
excess up to five years.
Real Estate
Over the years, most real estate has
appreciated faster than the rate of inflation and therefore, can offer great
potential for a charitable gift. Notre
Dame High School will consider
accepting a gift of a home, vacation
property, condominium, apartment
complex, undeveloped land or other
real estate in support of our mission.
Tangible Personal Property
Gifts of assets such as cars, jewelry and
boats are also welcomed. Gift acceptance is based on approval of the
Development Office. You generally get
a tax deduction for the full fair market
value (assuming the gift is considered
for a related use).
Paid Up Life Insurance
If one owns an insurance policy that is
no longer needed for its original purpose, it can be given to the school.
Notre Dame High School must then
become the owner of the policy. In
general, the donor will be entitled to an
income tax deduction for the cash surrender value and can deduct the
amount of future premiums paid to
Notre Dame High School.
Charitable Lead Trusts
Through a transfer of cash, securities or
real estate into a Charitable Lead Trust,
Notre Dame High School will receive

income from the trust for a set number
of years after which the trust principal
is returned to the donor or the donor's
designee at the end of the term of the
trust.
Wills, Trusts & Planned Gifts
In providing for the school in a person's will, the donor's lawyer should be
instructed that our corporate title is
“Notre Dame High School, Sherman
Oaks, CA”.
Memorial & Honorarium Gifts
During a bereavement period, family
and friends often see a donation to the
school as an appropriate means to
express sympathy. The following message in the obituary of the deceased
provides an avenue to make a meaningful and thoughtful gift. “Memorial

Valley for over 25 years. The tournament was held in April at
Weddington Golf and Tennis in Studio City followed by the popular luncheon

he third annual Hall of Fame Dinner & Induction Ceremony was held in February,
combining the Knights of Honor award, HD’s highest honor for lifetime service and
achievement, and the Athletic Hall of Fame, recognizing the athletic achievements of
exceptional alumni and coaches. This celebratory event promises to carry on the great Holy
Cross traditions and legacy as our community comes together to honor ND’s finext. The 201213 Knights of Honor award was presented to Rex and Maureen Rawlinson and the Fritz B.
Burns Foundation for “Loyalty to the Institution.” Athletic Hall of Fame inductees included:
Tony Salas ’57 (posthumous), Bud Fabian ’69, Escamillo Viltz ’78, Nigel Miguel ’81, Chris
Sailer ’95, Travis Johnson ’00 and Garrett Green ’06.
