The Irvine Open Space Preserve comprises a significant portion of the City’s protected natural
landscape, which includes parks, greenbelts, trails and wildlands. The Preserve was first established
in 1988 when Irvine voters approved the Irvine Open Space Initiative, which provided for the
permanent protection of a contiguous network of conservation and open space lands. Currently more
than 5,200 acres, the Preserve is a mosaic of some of the most rare and biologically diverse
ecosystems in the world, including wetlands, oak woodlands, grasslands and coastal sage scrub.
This scenic landscape has been designated a Natural Landmark by both the State of California and
the U.S. Department of the Interior for its preservation of critically important flora and fauna. The City
of Irvine is proud of this spectacular area and welcomes visitors to engage in the wide variety of
recreational and educational opportunities it offers.
Irvine Open Space Preserve Hours: 7 a.m. to Sunset.
Please note that some trails are open to the public for self-guided daily access (indicated in white on
map) and others may only be accessed through docent-led activities due to sensitive habitat
(indicated in yellow on map). For additional information on open space programs, please visit
www.LetsGoOutside.org.
