The DDM band performs at shopping malls, community occasions and dinner music for certain cafe’s. The band is currently organising who will play what instruments, and will soon begin learning short songs for performance. Mr. Ceilin was hired by his former principal, Mrs. Loken, to teach music and CTF because of his love for music and ability to play multiple instruments. Constructing Canine Cribs By Lawrence.C Interviewees Megan.B and Gurtej.S In constructing canine cribs, Megan.B and Gurtej.S from Dr.Donald Massey school are working on their doghouse. Their main goal is to finish by the deadline, March 9th. Gurtej.S has been working on it from the first session and Megan.B has just started this session. The doghouse will have a slanted roof in a shed style and will be rectangular. So far the doghouse is halfway done and they are about to build the roof. They are still debating on who will keep the doghouse. They are both proud of what they have accomplished so far. Megan.B has a cat that could use the doghouse but Gurtej S. doesn’t have a pet so he will use it as a decoration if he keeps it. They both enjoy the building part because they can gain building skills that will “build character”.

The Junior High girls in Dr. Donald Massey have the opportunity to be apart of the jr. girls and senior girls basketball teams. They need to try out to make it on a team but if you don’t make it the first time there’s always next year! We talked to the coaches and asked them questions about their teams this year. The seniors girls went to a tournament on January 89. They came in 5th place! They also played a game on January 11th and won 4012! We asked the senior girls coach, Ms. Norris some questions. This is what she had to say. “There are 23 week practices. I love coaching and took a degree for it , in school. There are 12 girls on our team. The basketball season is going to end on the first week of March. We have gone to tournaments at M.E Lazarte. There are two coaches on the senior girls basketball team. We look for athletable, work and effort, and if they listen to their coaches. There can be 13 players on our team.”Then we decided to talk to the players on each team, and this is what they had to say, “We tried out for basketball because it’s fun”. We had a great experience interviewing the coaches and players on the basketball team. Zentangle By Jasleen S. Isha K. MacKenzie W. One of the CTF options in Dr. Donald Massey School is Zentangle. We asked the students in the zentangle class questions on zentangle. The majority had to say this; “Zentangle is about creativity and a piece of art, zentangle can be used in different shapes and sizes.” The students said they love zentangle. They enjoy the creativity and putting detail into their work.” Immunizations By Kirat G., Grace M. and Meghna D. On the 6th of January, 2016, we interviewed Mrs. Loken about immunization. Students are immunized to prevent sickness’ such as measles, mumps, chickenpox and polio. Some side effects of the immunization needle is dizziness, vomiting, headaches and possible bruising on their arms. Immunizations create antibodies which may prevent sickness. Most immunizations last a lifetime but some, like the flu shot, last a year and you will have to get another one. Some people think immunizations hurt but others say they don’t , it depends on your body. Break The Rules Day By Shane.b Brandon.P The teacher that had come up with this idea had originally been Ms. Yaremko and her leadership students. This year Ms. Stiles and her leadership students hosted Break the Rules day. Alex. M has informed me that there are rules to Break the Rules day. He has informed us that there can not be nuts or other substances that people may be allergic to so that they will not be harmed if you share any food on the day. However, students are allowed to listen to music in class, eating food in class, and also sitting wherever you want in the class. In order to participate, students must pay $5. All funds collected will go to charity. Have you participated in break the rules day before? DDM hosts, a guest from Denmark.

Hailey R and Noor V Cecilia Hauberg came to Dr.Donald Massey school on the 10th of January. Her education is in Health and Nutrition. Eat healthy everyone! Cecilia came to Canada all the way from Denmark, a country in Northern Europe, where she was born. Cecilia Hauberg is here for an internship in her module! We asked her a few questions... here they are! How is Denmark the same as Canada? She told us it was the same because of the schools and all of the friendly people. If we know how they’re the same, how are they different? They are different because she thinks The children are more respectful in Canada than In Denmark. She says that it is also different because of our weather here, and the snow. I asked her What she likes here in Canada. She told us that she loves West Edmonton Mall, and the weather here (despite how different it is from Denmark). One thing she doesn’t like is the food we have here, because it is odd, like the bread is different for example. I was wondering why she chose DDM, She informed me that she came here, because she knows Mrs.FM, one of the junior high language arts teachers. For her job she is teaching, from kindergarten to grade nine, health and nutrition. She teaches everyone more by doing games and activities. Enjoy your stay at Dr. Donald Massey School! Boys Basketball Strikes Again By: Meryam A. and Emily B. Dr. Donald Massey Senior Boys Basketball Team, also known as the “Defending Champions”, brings home the 1st place trophy during the M.E LaZerte City State Tournament on January 9th. MAC: “Fun and gets you in shape” Who are your motivations in basketball? MAC: “Carmelo Anthony” RAVI: “Derrick Rose, Stephen Curry” What is your favorite team? MAC: “New York Knicks” RAVI: “Chicago Bulls” We also interviewed two of the boys from the Junior team, Lucas K and Faruq H, to see what their thought on basketball were. What inspired you to play basketball? LUCAS: “It’s a cool game I guess. Super fun...amazing. I thought it was fun...SUPER FUN. IT’S AMAZING. Who are your motivations in basketball? FARUQ: “Stephen Curry and Lebron James.” What is your favourite team? LUCAS: “Toronto Raptors all the way!” FARUQ: “Golden State.” Mr. Mills, one of the coaches for the boys, gave us the inside scoop on what the boys do during practices and how the whole “game play” plan works. He stated that the practices consist of drills, warm ups, dynamic stretching, skills (defence, offence, shooting, etc) and running. The games are organized by the sports staff of the Edmonton Public School Board. He says that he feels a bit bad for being hard on them at times but he’s really proud of their performances in games and their continuous growing effort in basketball! Well I guess we can say that hard work really does pay off! We are very proud of both of our Boys Basketball teams and we wish them the best during their new season. Good luck boys and...

Law Court By Noor.V The Law Court is when Laws are interpreted. When someone commits a crime and whether they are guilty or not guilty, and where people who are accused of crimes are judged and possibly sentenced. As Angelique said “I would recommend it for the grade 9’s next year because it allowed us to witness the Canadian Justice system first hand. The most interesting part about attending this field trip is we got to explore the entire law courts buildings we mostly stayed in the Queen's Bench Area since that’s where the murder trials and other serious offence trials are held. 91 went to court on January 12,2016 92 went to court on January 21,2016 93 went to court on January 14,2016 “Next year’s grade 9’s should go on this field trip, if they want a ton of fun!” CTF NEWS

Cinema Sleuth Movie Reviews WreckIt Ralph

By Julienne M 4.5 stars out of 5 WreckIt Ralph is no disappointment when it comes to the movie industry. Director Rich Moore and writers Phil Johnston and Jennifer Lee have crafted a turbotastic film about originality and selfacceptance! This animated film is adventurous and will have you at the edge of your seat with laughter. In the fantastic movie WreckIt Ralph, everyone is excited for a new day at Litwack’s arcade except for John C. Reilly’s character, WreckIt Ralph. Ralph had enough being the villain. He is tired of being looked down on and hated. He’s wants to gain respect by his fellow pixel pals and FixIt Felix Junior (played by Jack McBrayer). Ralph is determined to prove everyone wrong by setting out to find a medal of his own. In the adventure of finding his own medal WreckIt Ralph leaves his own game and heads to Game Central Station, the key access to all the games in the arcade. Ralph is led to the high definition game, Hero’s Duty. Hero’s Duty is led by the solemn Sergeant Calhoun interpreted by Jane Lynch. Soon Ralph finds himself in Sugar Rush. The kartracing game that’ll have your stomach growl the moment you lay your eyes on the screen. WreckIt Ralph befriends the cute, yet lively Vanellope von Schweetz. Vanellope’s dream is to race with all the other racers, only problem is she is the “glitch”. She is known as the mistake of the game, due to this she is banned from racing. Like, Ralph, Vanellope isn’t liked in her game leaving her lonely. Although she is lonely, the “glitch” accepts herself for who she is and keeps a positive attitude. With an alluring storyline and scrumptious setting, WreckIt Ralph will for sure Candy Crush your heart! This movie will intrigue all ages! Every detail in this movie is well thought out and will keep you hooked from the opening scene to the last. Don’t you want to know what happens next? So what are you waiting for!? Press “Play”! WreckIt Ralph

By Sydney D 4.5 stars out of 5 WreckIt Ralph Will Wreck and Fix Your Heart. WreckIt Ralph, a clever film able to please all audiences, from kids who love meeting these new characters, and relating to video games they are into, to adults getting a throwback on some of their favourite games as a kid. A great movie for the whole family. Another win for Disney Animations. I believe this successfully beat my hopes for this film. Director Rich Moore played this game well while being the main player in the making of this movie, with writing help from Phil Johnston, Jim Reardon, and Jennifer Lee. They were able to expertly win what was thought of as a tough level to beat. A bytesize universe is created between all games played at Litwak’s Family Fun Centre and Arcade. When the arcade closes, game characters interact with each other in Game Central Station. Enjoyable cameos are made from game characters like Pac Man, Bowser, the bartender from Tapper, Sonic the Hedgehog, Q*bert, and more. WreckIt Ralph, voiced by John C. Reilly, feels rejected, lonely, and an outcast in his own game. Constantly under the appeal of the “hero” in his game, FixIt Felix, voiced by Jack McBrayer, Ralph decided to leave his game, and prove to all players, and characters, that he can be just as important as the good guys. He abandons his game in an attempt to prove himself. He ends up in a game called “Hero’s Duty”, with a strong, strict female leader, Sergeant Calhoun, voiced by Jane Lynch. He also races into Sugar Rush. A sweet racing game in a sort of candy land. That’s bound to make you crave a sugary treat. Upon Arrival, he meets Vanellope Von Schweetz, voiced by Sarah Silverman, a sarcastic but lovable little girl with high hopes of becoming a racer, but is able to relate with Ralph because she is also seen as, Wreck it Ralph, an outcast being a glitch in her game. She’s a little bit mischievous but you will easily learn she’s as sweet as candy. I overall enjoyed this movie. It managed to stay comedic while never getting to maple sappy. Even if parts do break your heart, you got two lives left. It’s plot was original and easy to follow, making it more enjoyable for little kids. It very well fits under the animated family film category. I recommend this movie when you’re looking for a sweet, warm, cozy film. So plug in, power up. You’re in for a treat!
