T’S hard to imagine that Omaha’s lively
North Downtown neighborhood — or
NoDo, as it’s known locally — was nothing
but abandoned rail yards five years ago. Hugging the Missouri River, the area thrived as
early as the 1860s as Union Pacific’s transportation hub, before a merger sent the company
packing in the 1980s. Since then, the land had
sat relatively untouched — until developers,
taking cues from artists who reclaimed the
warehouses as cheap studios, started pumping money back into the area. Now, the new
TD AmeriTrade Park (currently hosting the
N.C.A.A. Men’s College World Series) and national chains like Urban Outfitters sit alongside locally owned clubs, bars and boutiques,
making it a new cultural town square.
