KELNEWS THE LATEST NEWS FROM KELTRUCK LIMITED 2011/12 INSIDE Keltruck acquire Silurian Scania Page 2 £1m Flagship Head Office Page 10-11 Fixed Price Repairs Page 17 www.keltruck.com WELCOME internal news a few words from MD Andrew Jamieson PIMP MY TRUCK Latest update I really can’t believe we’re here rounding off another year with the 2011 Kelnews. The year has just flown by, and beyond getting older I’ll put it down to how busy we’ve been in what has been a tough year. The market for trucks over 15 tonnes has grown beyond 2010, but we’re still some way off full recovery, with the best guess being that it will be down 20% on what we’d call the norm. Our two respective operating areas in the Midlands and South Wales have also not grown at the same rate as the national market and I’m sure most will agree that 2012 is going to be another hard year. That said we’ve not stood still and started the year with the acquisition of Silurian Scania, with it being merged into Keltruck in April. We’ve also started on the expansion of West Bromwich with the head office facility which is now clearly visible with much of the early work being behind the scenes. We’ve also just gone through a major upgrade of our dealer management system at a cost over £500,000 and perhaps the message contained in all of this is that we’re definitely here to stay and investing in the future. Past meets future with us welcoming back some customers to the Keltruck fold this year, as well as dealing with some for the first time, and all I can say from the top, is that we aim to live up to and exceed customer expectations every day, and if we’re not achieving this, let us know. Our Head Office site at West Bromwich was accredited with ISO 9001 as a quality standard this year and again this is aimed at developing continuous improvement for our customers and at the same time eliminating waste. We have trained every single front facing member of staff in improving the customer experience and while we’ll never get it right every single time we’re serious about what the Keltruck experience means to our customers. Beyond the above we’ve been busy with the various events, and perhaps the one that has touched the hearts most recently was the ‘Olivia Appeal’ which you can read about; but it is great to see a depot, all its staff and its neighbouring managers come together to do something so positive and worthwhile. I hope that we’ll see others following this example in the months to come. A major milestone in the Pimp My Truck project has been achieved with the truck successfully acquiring an MoT test certificate meaning that all of the significant mechanical work has now been completed. The truck’s cherished number plate “H4H TD” is also due to be put on the vehicle soon to add that extra special and apt touch. Regards, New Vintage Classics to add to the collection Andrew Jamieson Managing Director [email protected] www.keltruck.com/andrewjamieson can also deliver a number of positives to Silurian Scania and their customers.” The acquisition saw Keltruck welcome a further 4 branches – Cardiff, Caldicot, Cross Hands and Ross on Wye – to our network, increasing the total branches across the Midlands and South Wales to 21. Keltruck and Silurian Scania officially merged on 1st April 2011. kelnews nov 2011 Keltruck Newark’s bodyshop has completed all of the restoration, paintwork, interior and exterior trim and has acted as a work base hub for other companies to conduct their work. With the finishing line now in sight, the project organiser’s plans are to showcase the vehicle during the 2012 CV Show and Truckfest Peterborough to publicise and encourage interest in the one of a kind vehicle ahead of being put up for auction. On 1st January 2011, Keltruck acquired Silurian Scania, the official Scania dealership for South Wales. 2 With the vehicle being donated by J&L Commercial Vehicles, Trucks 2 Go and DW Vehicles, the cavalry closely followed behind to get their teeth stuck in to the new project with Keltruck Newark being a top contender. This leaves me to say a big thank you for the customers, old and new, that we have been able to serve this year and to wish everyone success in the coming year. Keltruck Acquires Silurian Scania Andrew Jamieson, Keltruck’s Managing Director and Dealer Principal commented, “We were delighted with this acquisition. With our existing scale and range of services we are confident that we In December 2009, Keltruck joined the likes of Michelin, Tyretracks, Powertrucks, Eminox, Kelsa, SB Components, Coles & Sons Transport and many more to help the proposed “Pimp My Truck” project, to later auction with all proceeds to Help for Heroes. This year our main focus has been to improve the facilities at the branches and to improve the overall presentation of the premises and the process implementation to bring them up to Keltruck’s standards. Our plan for 2012 is to focus on business development and continue to develop the branches so we can offer our new customers the best possible service. www.keltruck.com/news [email protected] Follow the progress of the project: www.roadtransport.com In October this year, Chris Kelly, Chairman of Keltruck Ltd, purchased this Scania 141 to add to Keltruck’s vintage truck collection. Now standing proudly in Keltruck Willenhall’s reception, the 1977 Scania 141 was new to Martintrux running mainly to Italy. Later this truck was sold to Heavy haul at Chelmsford, Essex to run heavy haulage duties until parked in the brambles for many years. The truck has been restored – including many new parts including wings, grills, doors and floor pan. Along with the 141, Chris Kelly also purchased a T143MA4x2NZ 400 cab in November. The 1988 vehicle has been fully restored by its previous owner and has been retired in the Isle of Man for a number of years. Now at Keltruck West Bromwich, the vehicle will be having a full interior refurbishment and final touch ups ready to show in 2012. www.keltruck.com/news [email protected] Pictured: Top – Scania 141 alongside Scania LB81HS31 4x2 Tractor unit Bottom – T143MA4x2NZ 400 cab www.keltruck.com 3 internal news Chris Kelly MP – One year on Q. Are you enjoying it? A. I am. Every day in this role is different and every day I am dealing with something different. The range of constituency casework that comes to my attention is staggering but sorting some seemingly intractable problems for constituents can be very rewarding. Prime Minister’s Questions is always the highlight of the Parliamentary week and it really is an honour to have a ringside seat. My proudest achievement as a Member of Parliament is not anything I’ve said in the Commons chamber or my performance at the ballot box – it’s getting a wet room sorted for a profoundly disabled young girl whose family were distraught and unable to cope with their situation. Q. What have been your main focuses over the past year for Dudley South? Last year in May, Chris Kelly Jnr, previously Keltruck’s Marketing Director and son of Chris Kelly, Chairman of Keltruck, was elected as the Conservative MP for Dudley South. We caught up with him to check his progress since the election to see how he is getting on. Q. Is the job all you imagined it to be? A. I actually worked in Parliament in my mid-twenties after I finished business school working for Michael Howard whilst he was Leader of the Conservative Party so I had an idea of how Parliament works and where all the crucial facilities are (the canteens & toilets etc!) but it is a very different experience being here as a Member. The strangest feeling was walking through Members’ Lobby and having the doors held open for me by very well dressed and very polite door keepers (I don’t think I’d ever had a door held open for me before)! Despite being immaculately turned out the Commons door keepers are not ceremonial – should someone attempt to burst into Members’ Lobby or the Chamber itself the door keepers would soon smother them! 4 kelnews dec 2011 A. My main focus has been to provide a first class service to my constituents and to represent them to the best of my ability in the Commons whilst getting out and about in Dudley South as much as possible, meeting with and talking to as many people as possible through my regular constituency advice surgeries and street stalls plus traditional door knocking and leaflet delivery sessions. I promised the people of Dudley South at the election that I would be an open, accessible and transparent MP and that’s very much how I intend to continue. In all my years in my family business the main thing I learned is customer service – at Keltruck we pride ourselves on delivering excellence in customer service. That ethos has been carried into my new role as I serve the hard working families of Dudley South. Q. If any targets were set, what were they and have they been achieved? A. I set myself targets on holding regular constituency advice surgeries across my constituency and maintaining a high voting average in the House of Commons, both of which (I am pleased to say) I have exceeded. It is hard to respond quickly to all of the correspondence that comes into both of my offices (one in Dudley South and one in Parliament) but I’m pleased to say that constituents always receive a prompt reply to their concerns. Q. What have been your main achievements in the job so far? A. I’ve been working on tackling metal theft and arranged for the Home Office minister to meet me and industry figures from Dudley South who are being affected by this criminal activity. I am hopeful that we will soon have a cashless system for scrap metal sales so that it will be much harder for people to steal lead off the local church roof and then weigh it in for cash. I founded the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Family Business which acts as a forum between UK family businesses and ministers. Our inaugural annual reception at the Commons will be addressed by the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation & Skills and attended by BIS and Treasury ministers allowing family business leaders to engage directly with key members of the Government. The private sector is a vital part of the UK economy and, within that, family businesses play an enormous part. Many millions of Britons work for family businesses but the sector has not traditionally punched its weight so my group is part of an attempt to rectify that. Many of Keltruck’s customers are family businesses doing a great job of serving their customers down the generations. Follow keltruck online: keltruck.com/facebook keltruck.com/twitter keltruck.com/youtube keltruck.com/flickr I spend a lot of time visiting small and medium size businesses in Dudley South and have helped them work through various problems to enable them to get on with growing their order books and hire more employees. Q. What has been your biggest challenge that you have successfully accomplished? A. I think the biggest challenge was getting elected in 2010 but, since arriving in the Commons, a major challenge has been my decision, very early on, to be an independent minded Conservative MP. That has meant, on a few occasions, that I have had to vote against my own Government when I haven’t thought that they’ve got it right over Europe, and then deal with the consequences. Q. What are your main focuses for the next 12 months? A. My focus is on my work in Parliament and in the chamber but also to maintain the level of reporting back to my constituents through regular leaflets delivered door-to-door and good old fashioned door knocking. In addition to that there is keeping on top of constituency matters and correspondence (some people even contact their MP on Christmas Day and, if it’s a genuine emergency, you can expect that your MP will intervene – much like Scania Assistance!) and also interacting directly with constituents through social media platforms. www.chriskellymp.com Staff Movements Simon Rudall – Coventry Branch Supervisor Damian Taylor – Tamworth Branch Supervisor Phil Haywood – Newark Branch Manager Jon Hartwell – Lutterworth & VMU Branch Supervisor Phil Hickin – Regional General Manager Karen Hall – Specialist Division Supervisor Chris Murphy – Burton on Trent Branch Manager Paul Evans – Cardiff Branch Manager Glenn Bagnall – Used Sales Manager Paul Loach – Regional Parts Manager Nigel Bennett – Regional Parts Manager www.keltruck.com 5 internal news Rally for Ellie This year between 8th – 13th May, Chris Kelly, Chairman of Keltruck Ltd, participated in the Monte Carlo Rally in his Ferrari 458 Italia to raise money for his founded trust fund for Ellie Bishop. Chris managed to raise an impressive £5,500 towards the trust from the rally. www.elliebishop.org [email protected] Getting ready for Euro 6 Scania is unveiling 440 and 480 hp 13-litre Euro 6 engines. The engines combine a host of innovative technical solutions to cut emissions radically, while the consumption of fuel is as good as Scania’s Euro 5 engines. Ellie Bishop, aged 11, was diagnosed with meningitis in February 2006 and has since had both of her legs, one of her arms and most of her hand amputated as a result. Chris founded the ‘Ellie Bishop Trust’ in 2006, with all Keltruck branches continuing to help to raise money for the trust. KELTRUCK LAUNCH HELP FOR HEROES CAMPAIGN Scania’s new Euro 6 compliant engines are designed to give the same performance and fuel efficiency as their Euro 5 counterparts. The engines make it possible for keen operators to take the next step and invest in the greenest technology available in the market. Maintained fuel efficiency Scania has spared no effort to avoid fuel penalties on the new engines. Fuel economy, driveability and engine response are fully on a par with our Euro 5 engines. The 440 and 480 hp Euro 6 engines will be available across the G- and R-series ranges for all types of applications. On 1st March 2011, we officially launched our Help for Heroes campaign featuring a 12m poster on our iconic water tower at our Head Office site in West Bromwich, beside junction one of the M5 motorway. Back in December 2010, Chris Kelly, Founder and Chairman of Keltruck Ltd, was introduced to the co-founder of Help for Heroes, Bryn Parry, by a former Keltruck colleague Michael Leeming, now of JCB, who in turn served with Bryn many years ago as a military helicopter pilot. Talk soon turned to how Keltruck could support the charity and so the motorway side text-to-donate poster was born. A simple concept and so easy to do; “Help 6 kelnews dec 2011 for Heroes – TEXT HERO TO 70900 TO DONATE £5” Along with the water tower banner, Keltruck have enhanced their campaign further by adding new Help for Heroes decals on the rear doors of their 100+ Parts and Service vans. Andrew Jamieson, Managing Director, commented: “We’re proud to be supporting Help for Heroes; their work and achievements in such a short time are truly fantastic. I have been humbled by some of the brave guys I’ve met along the way and honestly hero is, for many, an understatement.” www.keltruck.com/news [email protected] Euro 6 is a drastic downward step in emission levels compared to Euro 5. Emissions of nitrogen oxides and particulates are around one-fifth of those for Euro 5 engines. A new element in emission testing is that the particles also need to be counted, which in practice means that the actual particulate emissions will be around one-sixth of Euro 5. The new Scania 440 and 480 hp Euro 6 engines will be available across the G- and R-series ranges for all types of applications Euro 6 emission standards will enter into force in the European Union and certain neighbouring countries on 31 December 2012 for new vehicle models and one year later for all new vehicles sold. depot of the year Keltruck Achieves ISO Quality Standard This year our West Bromwich branch has achieved ISO 9001 accreditation covering all aspects of the range of services on offer from new and used sales, through service parts, bodyshop and even end of life recycling of vehicles. Andrew Jamieson, Managing Director, commented: “The accreditation of the ISO 9001 Quality Standard is a reflection of the systems and process that we have put in place across the operation aimed at continually improving the service we give to our customers; be this through efficient and effective management processes, through to reducing waste.” The ISO accreditation comes on top of our significant investment at West Bromwich and the £560,000 investment in IT system upgrades, making a serious statement of intent about the company’s ambitions for the future. ISO 9001:2008 is a world recognised measurement of Quality Standard and is subject to continuous independent inspection. www.keltruck.com/news [email protected] We’re very proud to announce that we have 6 branches in the top 20 for “Depot of the Year”.
