Chairman’s Report….
Welcome to the Season. Now that the first Twlilight, Inshore and Offshore series races are all behind us,
along with our Opening Day Celebrations, it finally feels like we’re into another racing season! I myself
dusted off the cobwebs on the Orontes race with a guest gig on Two True (thanks Andrew) and it was great
to get back out on the water.
On behalf of the Racing Association I’d like to extend a hearty welcome to four new boats: The Business
(Nick George), Transfusion (David Knights), Asylum (Derek Morrison) and Bella Mia II (Dominic and
Anthony Rinaldi). With five now within the club, it’s wonderful to see the Sydney 38 fleet growing as these
most excellent racing boats become more and more affordable.
Those of you who race Twilights might like to introduce yourself to the crew from Bella Mia II. Speaking to
the crew last week I was pleased to discover that although they are relatively new to the sport of yacht
racing, the Bella Mia II boys are not only looking forward to extending their knowledge of sailing (and
racing in particular) but also to making new friends around the club so please make them feel welcome.
Given that we are at the beginning of a new season, it’s perhaps timely to remind all skippers and crews
about protest procedures. If you are at all unclear about how to properly signal and correctly lodge a
protest I strongly recommend a quick refresher. As per the Blue Book and our SI’s, time limits apply and
correct protocol must be adhered to in order for a protest to be deemed valid. Please remember that any
REX member or our Protest Chairman Simon Irving may be consulted if you’d like further clarification of
any points.
Some Club members have received recognition these past weeks. Congratulations to Ron Yeates and
Andrew Saies. Jess has listed full details in her report.

Yes, it’s only October but soon it will be Christmas and then, before we know it we’ll be into Lincoln Week
and then Easter/Anzac Day. I’ll be reminding you all in coming months about our special club activities
planned for Port Vincent during the Easter/Anzac Day week but an important point is that if you wish to
secure a berth at Pt Vincent Marina during this week it will be imperative to book early. Racing yachts who
may not have the luxury of anchor winches will certainly want to ensure they get an inside berth before
they’re all booked up.
In closing, we have scheduled a “Keelboat Carnival” day on our calendar for November 28. In response to
requests by some skippers, REX has nominated this “fun” day to give junior sailors the opportunity to
spend an afternoon sailing on large keelboats. Weather permitting, we hope to hoist some kites and enjoy
a ‘no pressure’ race so they can see how our boats perform. We cannot run this day, though, without the
help of some skippers and a few of their crew members to put a few boats out on the water. Please let
Jess or myself know if you would like to be part of this fun day. This day may also be helpful for skippers
who might like to get a bit of spinnaker training under their belt before the season gains momentum.

MARINE ACADEMY
The CYCSA and the Racing Association welcomes Matt Young, our new Marine Academy Coordinator to the club.
Matt has been around boats and water for most of his life, having moved through Holdfast Trainers, 303’s and 420 as a youth
competing at club, state and national levels. Other boats he has jumped on board include the Laser and
Australian Lightweight Sharpies.
Matt has come to us from the Adelaide Sailing Club where he was the Sailing Coordinator and boasts the highest figures for
adults in Yachting Australia Small Boat Sailing Scheme courses . Matt has also held the position of Head Coach of Metropolitan
Schools Team Sailing for the past 13 years, and in addition has worked for South Australian Youth Sailing as the Youth
Development Squad Coach.
Matt will continue to assist youth class associations in their training—a skill that he has developed over the years and takes its
roots from his time as Brighton and Seacliff Yacht Club Youth coach as a teenager. In addition to this impressive resume,
Matt’s day job for the past 12 years has been working under Brett Yardley at Westlakes Aquatics Centre as an Instructor, and
with this background Matt recently achieved the endorsement of Yachting Australia Senior Small Boat Sailing Instructor.
We are pleased to have Matt as a part of the team, and wish him all the best for the future here!

SYDNEY TO HOBART DINNER
A reminder to all past participants and those who have an interest in the
Sydney to Hobart Race that the annual commemoration and farewell dinner is
being held on Friday 26th November – time now to lock it in your diary!
Apart from celebrating past races and exchanging tall stories, the evening will feature the
four past SA winners – Nerida (1950), Ingrid (1952), Ausmaid (2000) and Two True (2009)
- so we'd love to see as many crew from those boats come along and enjoy the evening.
A guest speaker and exciting audio/visual material will make for an interesting and
enjoyable dinner at the CYCSA.
Finally of course, we will farewell the skippers and crews of the three South Australian
yachts competing in the 2010 Sydney-Hobart race: SMB 3.5, Shining Sea and Two True, all
representing the CYCSA.

RACING MANAGER’S REPORT

Hello, and a big welcome back to everyone!
It has been great to see lots of friendly, familiar faces back at the CYCSA over the past
couple of weeks—a reminder that summer is on the way and the season will soon be in full swing! We
have managed to get away the first race in our Inshore, Offshore, Coaster, Inshore/Offshore and Twilight
series—congratulations to all our winners. A reminder that The Premiers Cup is coming up over the
weekend of the 20th-21st November. Remember that all CYCSA Inshore Series entrants can nominate for
half price. You can find the Notice of Race on the website, so hurry and get your nominations in.
In other news, a few Sail Storage Racks have become available recently. If you would like to rent one,
please contact me and we can work out the details.
Congratulations to Andrew Saies, who has received YSA’s Thomas G. Flint Memorial Trophy for Sailor of
the Year, and also to David Tillett who was awarded Life Membership for his services to Yachting in SA.
Congratulations also go to Ray Evans and Paul Gardiner who were voted joint winners of the CYCSA
Volunteer of the year award.

Very special mention this month goes to Ron Yeates. Ronnie has
been recognised by both Yachting Australia and Yachting SA in
recent months for his 25 years of service and outstanding
commitment to the CYCSA as a volunteer. Ron was nominated for
the YA’s Volunteer of the Year Award 2010, and recently attended
the awards in Sydney with his biggest supporter, wife Edith. Ronnie
came away empty handed, but was compensated by
receiving YSA’s President’s Award for Services to Yachting in SA.
Well done Ronnie, a great achievement for a very deserving bloke.

Inshore Champsionship Race 1...Race Report
An excellent course set by Race Officer Neil Burford kicked off this series for Division 1 and 2 while two windward/leeward
races were conducted for the J24 Fleet. A windward beat to the wreck buoy was followed by a reach to the Number Five
beacon, a run to the Northern Silt, back on the wind to the wreck buoy then a run to the finish, a 10k breeze held for most of
the race. Good fleet on the water, 34 in total (17 CYCSA, 17 RSAYS)

Race 1 of the MUSTO Offshore Series was held on Saturday 16th October 2010, with a river start this year due to doubt on
RSAYS start boat ‘Miss Robin’ being able to anchor after overnight strong winds. Great fleet of 20 yachts – 10 from CYCSA and
10 from RSAYS competing in either the MUSTO Offshore series or the Inshore / Offshore series. Good start at 1300 with wind
16 knots from 190 degrees hard on until out of the river with much shouting due to the close confines of the Port River.The
first mark of the course was Long Spit – heading approx 290 degrees – a broad reach for most – but some yachts managed to
fly a shy kite with very mixed results – bad news for The Business who blew theirs. SMB 3.5 took off and soon were in the
distance, followed by 3 Cool Cats, Two True, Carpe Diem and then a group of about a dozen other yachts. After rounding Long
Spit the next mark was Orontes - heading 195 degrees pretty well hard on all the way with breeze moving between 180/210
degrees around d 12-16knots.
Not much change in the first half of the fleet but a fair bit of movement further back. Last leg was Orontes to finish; approx
22miles heading 90degrees – the breeze was on the move again due to some ominous black clouds to S/W. SMB 3.5 did not fly
a kite but blitzed the fleet finishing at 1844hrs with an elapsed time on 5 hours and 44 mins for approx 58 miles. Just after
2000hrs the breeze freshened from 15/16 up to 20+ as the black clouds came upon the fleet – many yachts with shy kites up
experienced some exciting times with plenty of round ups. 3 Cool Cats ripped their kite with 2 miles to go. The 2nd over the line
was Carpe Diem, followed by 3 Cool Cats, Two True, Shining Sea, The Business, with Kaesler not far behind.
Good breeze all day made for a really pleasant race and very little water on the deck.

ASYLUM DELIVERY TRIP—HOBART TO ADELAIDE
ASYLUM (Sydney 38) delivery trip Hobart 9/10/10 to CYCSA Adelaide 15/10/10
New owner Derek Morrison and crew Mark Williams, Simon Grayling, William Strangways, Ron, and Cat - an English female doctor
(Psychiatrist - perfect for a Yacht named Asylum) arrived in Hobart on Thursday the 7th of October at 1400hrs. We checked the boat
over with the agent and made a list of items missing from the inventory before loading 15 sails onboard, keeping only the Dacron
main and the number 5 headsail aside for the cruise home. We spent our first night in Hobart at the Customs House Hotel.
On a cold Friday (-8 degrees and snow on Mt Wellington) Derek chased up all the missing items whilst Cat and William went shopping
for food and galley equipment. We were all packed and ready to go by 1600hrs, a test sail revealed all to be ok.
The second night we had arranged to spend at the Royal Hobart Yacht Club where we filled the tank with 100L diesel, plus 2 x 20L
plastic containers. That evening we went to the Clubhouse only to find it was the Annual Boson’s Night - $15 per head for
a buffet meal and beers til 2200! – Lucky us! Due to bad weather forecast for West Coast & PLENTY of local advice we decided to go
home via the East Coast.
On Saturday the 9th, a technician turned up to supply and fit a magic touch screen Garmin Plotter (all linked to the B+G instruments
already on the boat). After completion we managed to leave the marina (RHYC) at about 1145hrs. It was overcast and still very cold
with a tricky N/E-S/W wind in the Derwent. With a reef in and number 5 we headed out for the 2 hr trip to the Iron Pot, and by 1355
we were reaching under clear skies and sunshine for Cape Raol with a 15/20knt westerly.
Abeam Cape Raol at 1630hrs, the winds were steady but dark clouds were approaching from the south. We rounded Tasman Island in
the midst of a 35 knot S/S/W squall and rain. Fortunately, we put in a second reef and dropped the head sail prior to the front hitting
us then it was exciting sailing as we surfed down the waves heading N/E with a S/W wind 25 + knots which held for most of the night.
On Sunday 10th at 0500hrs we were abeam Shouten Island and the wind down to 5 knots S/E. We took out both reefs and hoisted the
number 5 headsail, also ran the motor - now doing 7 knots. 1345 sked approx 35 miles S/S/E Swan Island – there was a strong wind
warning for our area E/S/E 20/30 knots - all good for us. Sunshine to make us happy.
At 1530hrs the first major highlight of the voyage occurred approx halfway between St Helens and Eddystone Point. We were 15
miles offshore when Mark and Simon called WHALE! This was followed by a very hard bang on the boat - similar to hitting a lump of
wood or rock. It was in fact the TAIL hitting the stbd side of the hull as it dived under us. We all rushed up on deck to see the whale
surface and blow 200 metres away.
1700hrs abeam Eddystone Rocks wind N/E 20 knots with a reef in our heading 340degrees. 1930hrs abeam Swan Island at sunset we
put a second reef in heading now to 280degrees with breeze N/E 20 knots - luckily in Banks Strait with a tide rip going our way –
2045hrs well through – we hit 13.8 knots plus plenty of 9-11knts.
By Monday 0800hrs we had covered 104 miles in the last 11hrs, 0945hrs the wind dropped out so we were now motoring in calm
seas 10k N/N/E with an oil rig to starboard. By 1400hrs we were all sitting in the cockpit with the motor off for a lunch of salad,
chicken, and cold chops. We had perfect sailing in Bass Strait; by 1930hrs we were abeam the Northern tip of King Island. 2045sked
strong wind warning in SA/VC border area. Current wind speed was18 knots, and the boat speed was 7. Our position 145miles S/E
Portland.
On Tues 12th at 0215hrs, we passed a fishing boat with very bright lights - we were approx 4 miles from them yet the crew shadows
appeared on our sails as we passed by. By 0400hrs a cold wind was gusting up to 35 knots. The vang shackle snapped but we managed to temporarily fix it with rope and shackles. By 0800hrs the wind was dropping. 15 knots from N/E. With batteries low we
started to motor. At 1300hrs, it was raining and the seas were glassy – we were still motoring towards Portland to drop off Dr Cat. At
1500hrs we made contact with The Coastguard communications in Port Fairy, where we spoke to a very helpful lady who contacted
the Commodore of the Portland Yacht Club (Cyril), who then assisted when we entered the Portland Harbour in fog and rain. We
dropped Cat off at 2015hrs and were back out of the Harbour by 2030hrs.
On Wednesday the 13th at 0630 we dropped out second reef and started the motor; we had motored for 20 hrs in total. After putting
the remaining 40 litres of diesel in the tank at 1800hrs we were still motoring 20 miles S/S/W of Robe in the sunshine, with lovely blue
water and large swells but very little wind. Saw 4 large ships today.
Thurs 14th at 0100hrs saw us 93 miles S/E of Cape Jervis. At 0745hrs we cut the motor and continued sailing but by 1045hrs the wind
had died. Our 1230 sked with Tiddy Widdy Beach, predicted a late afternoon gale warning for gulf waters.
At 1730hrs we dropped Ron off at the Cape Jervis Sea link wharf – with no ladders (this was not easy) and by 2000hrs we had the
motor off and were at last sailing in a 15 knot westerly, however, by 2045hrs it was flat calm so we motored again, worried about the
forecast and black clouds to W/N/W.
On Friday the 15th at 0200hrs the wind came up from zero to 20 knots from W/S/W – we were now only 2 miles from our destination
- the CYCSA. At 0215hrs we entered the breakwater with 30 knots W/S/W. By 0230hrs we were tied up to the marina in 45 knots, very
lucky get in just before the gale which continued to rage for most of Friday.

Phil Hoffmann Travel Twilight Race 1
The 1st race of the PHT Twilight series was held on Wednesday the 20th October 2010 with 22 starters in the Cruising Division
and 3 starters in the Racing Division.
Wind at start was 11knts from 220 degrees with flat seas. Perfect conditions for the first race with clear skies and plenty of
sunshine. Race Officer Ray Evans set an interesting course: start on wind to a mark near the Wreck Buoy, followed by a run to
No5 – reach to lead in and on wind to finish – approx 8 miles.
Clean start for all – the wind held at around 10-11knts till the first mark, during the second leg to No5 the breeze moved back
to 170degrees and softened to 6-8 knots. It was a bit stronger for the third leg, but back down to 8knots for the beat to the
finish. There was a large gap in the fleet between the larger/faster yachts and the smaller/slower yachts. However the smaller
yachts had their revenge on the results sheet.

Race 1 in the Coaster Series was run on the 16th October 2010.
Course: 15 knots S/S/W – In river start hard on to Wreck Buoy – run back to No15 – on wind to Wreck Buoy then run to finish in the river.
A good course with long legs enjoyed by the small fleet that turned up – a total of 9 yachts (4 from CYCSA and 5 from RSAYS)
