FAMILY WEEKEND
FAMILY WEEKEND
Welcome from
the Parent
Association
Dear UK Families,
I’m excited that your family is here to
experience the fun of a busy fall weekend
on campus. There is so much to do and
see, so take a moment to browse this
guide to get an overview. In these pages
you’ll find the Family Weekend schedule
of events, information on getting around
campus and Lexington, and everything
you need to know to get gameday ready
as the Cats take on Charleston Southern.
I am indebted to the many offices,
student organizations, and individuals
who contributed to the planning and
execution of Family Weekend. Without
the support of the UK community, this
weekend wouldn’t be possible. I know
you will pass your thanks on to them
as well throughout the weekend.
I hope you will enjoy being part
of your student’s UK experience
for a weekend! Go Cats!
Welcome to Family Weekend
Best wishes,
Dear UK Families,
Welcome to Family Weekend! We are thrilled you will be able to spend some time on our
campus, learning more about how your student spends time at the University of Kentucky.
While we are sure we will see many of you donning your blue and white at the football
game, we encourage you to investigate more of our other campus offerings while you
are here. Many of our colleges and academic programs will host open houses and
receptions, and our MacAdam Student Observatory will offer a brief lecture and a tour.
If you have never had the pleasure of visiting our observatory, it is an absolute must.
Thank you, again, for spending some
time with us this weekend. We look
forward to seeing you around campus!
Sincerely,
Lee T. Todd, Jr.

popular ensemble performs cutting-edge
percussion literature written for large
forces and demands unflinching intensity
of concentration, sustained, vigorous
athleticism and, at times, the quiet intensity
and slow balance of martial arts. Although
a UK Percussion Ensemble concert is
visually and sonically dramatic, it is not so
much theater as it is ritual – performers
in search of a shared experience. The
concert is free and open to the public.
Free parking is available in Employee
“E” lots on North Campus. E lots are

LEXINGTON GUIDE
LEXINGTON GUIDE
Photo by Jeff Rogers .Courtesy of the Lexington
Convention and Visitors Bureau
Welcome to Lexington and the Bluegrass Region - a thriving area
nestled in the heart of Kentucky. You may already know Lexington
for its horses, hospitality, and breathtaking beauty. But that’s just the
start of an exciting visit to the Bluegrass. Here, you’ll discover the
perfect combination of extraordinary countryside and cosmopolitan
amenities. Whether you’re here on business or pleasure, you’ve
embarked on a journey that is unique to central Kentucky.
Getting here is easy. Leaving’s the
hard part. Located within a day’s drive
of two-thirds of the U.S. population,
Lexington is the northernmost city in
the South, and it’s centrally located in
the Bluegrass Region of Kentucky at the
crossroads of two major U.S. interstates,
I-75 and I-64. If you’re arriving by air,
be sure to request a window seat to
witness one of America’s most beautiful
air approaches. Once you’ve landed,
Blue Grass Airport is a convenient
34
10-minute drive to downtown.
Where else can you experience the
drama and pageantry of a national

Lexington is home to 450 horse farms.
Some of its wealthiest residents are
horses, and queens, counts and
sheiks are frequent guests. Settled
in 1775, Lexington was known as
the “Athens of the West” during the
early 1800s. Today, there are plenty
of museums, art galleries, shopping
opportunities, historic homes, sporting
venues and restaurants guaranteed
to please a variety of tastes.

WILDCAT NICKNAME
SCHOOL COLORS
The official nickname for the University
of Kentucky’s athletic teams is “Wildcats.”
The nickname became synonymous with
UK shortly after a 6-2 football victory over
Illinois on October 9, 1909. Commandant
Carbusier, then head of the military
department at old State University, told
a group of students in a chapel service
following the game that the Kentucky
football team had “fought like Wildcats.”
The University of Kentucky adopted blue
and white as its official colors in 1892.
Originally, however, UK students had
decided on blue and light yellow. The
shade of blue was chosen when a student
asked the question, “What color blue?” At
the time, Richard C. Stoll, a football player,
pulled off his necktie and held it up. The
students then adopted that particular
shade of blue. A year later, UK students
officially dropped light yellow for white.
SONGS
“On, On, U of K”
On, on, U of K, we are right
for the fight today,
Hold that ball and hit that line;
Ev’ry Wildcat star will shine;
We’ll fight, fight, fight, for
the blue and white
As we roll to that goal, Varsity,
And we’ll kick, pass and run,
‘til the battle is won,
And we’ll bring home the victory.
The University of Kentucky’s fight song
first premiered at a student convocation
in the spring of 1923. Lyricist Troy Perkins,
an alumnus, won a $5 prize in a contest to
write the words. Professor Carl Lampert,
known as the father of the UK Music
Department, wrote the music in 1922.
“My Old Kentucky Home”
The sun shines bright on my
old Kentucky home,
’Tis summer, the time to be gay;
The corn-top’s ripe and the
meadow’s in the bloom,
While the birds make music all the day.
The young folks roll on
the little cabin floor,
All merry, all happy and bright;
By’n by hard times come
a-knocking at the door,
Then my old Kentucky home, good night!
(CHORUS)
Weep no more my lady, Oh!
Weep no more today!
We will sing one song for my
old Kentucky home,
For my old Kentucky home, far away.
“My Old Kentucky Home” is the state song
of Kentucky. It was written by Stephen
Collins Foster in 1853 and was later adopted
by the Kentucky General Assembly as
the official state song on March 19, 1928.
The song was inspired by Foster’s visit
to Federal Mansion, his cousin’s home
located in Bardstown, Kentucky.
